This was a spot with a large bar that served new American cuisine for the most part. The menu was rather large with very exciting choices. The service was friendly and the food came out quickly. I had four dishes that I will describe below. Carolina Hush Puppies ($8) - These came with jalapeno-honey butter, which was what drew me initially, but they did not need them at all. There was five extremely large hush puppies, and they were some of the best, if not the best, I ever had. They were perfectly fried with tons of flavor. The butter was tasty, but as mentioned, not needed at all. Deviled Farm Eggs ($8) - There were four present and they were topped with a homemade chili crunch. These were solid. I thought the chili crunch would be spicier, but there was a nice slight crisp factor with the crunch present. Old Bay Macaroni Salad ($6) - This was a traditional macaroni salad with a hint of old bay. The macaroni was cooked ideally, and the touch of old bay was a different seasoning to use. Chopped Salad ($19) - This had romaine lettuce, roasted carrots, avocado, pickled red onion, cornbread croutons, bell peppers, feta cheese, and pulled rotisserie chicken, with a green goddess dressing. This was very big with a ton of all of the ingredients. They appeared all fresh and paired nicely with one another. I thought the dressing was a little light and actually could have used more flavor. There's a large selection of craft beers, cocktails, and wine. The cuisine is American; there were burgers, salads, sandwiches, and more. They also give you the option to make your own bloody Marys. I had the Express Yourself cocktail which is like an espresso martini; that was good. For my meal, I had the Engine Room breakfast sandwich, it had bacon, eggs, cheese, on a bun with fries. We went for lunch and were told right away that they were out of several menu items, which was fine. One person in our group has multiple allergies, and while the staff assured us it would be fine the service didn't reflect that level of attentiveness. It ended up taking over 45 minutes for our food to come out. We were told there would be a 30 minute wait for rotisserie chicken and that salads with chicken would be substituted with crispy chicken, but we didn't order anything that should have required that kind of delay. During that time, we watched several other tables come in after us, get their food, and leave before we were even served. After our drinks were dropped off, our server never checked back in to update us on the delay. However she did check in after we got our food. I completely understand that things can get busy, but the restaurant was empty, and multiple staff members passed by our table without acknowledging us. My friends and I ate at Engine Room while visiting Mystic for the day. The restaurant came recommended from a coworker. Overall we were happy with her recommendation - it was a positive experience. The restaurant is pretty central to Main Street and definitely walkable if you want to stroll around and walk off your food. Parking in the front is limited but there's additional parking behind the restaurant. The service was good. Our waitress was friendly and checked-in frequently. For food we started with an order of the Cowboy Dip and the Salmon Jerky. The dip is good, but it's very cream cheese forward. It's basically just cream cheese mixed with jalapeños. We ended up asking for more chips because you'll likely run out. The salmon jerky was DELICIOUS. I could've eaten an entire plate as my entree. The serving size isn't great for a group however. It comes with 4 pieces, so each person in our group got a single piece. For mains the group ordered the Mushroom Mae Burger, the Chicken Burger, a pulled chicken sandwich off their seasonal specials menu, and a French Onion Soup. Everyone enjoyed their food. I thought the Mushroom Mae burger tasted excellent - just wish it came with more fries. The only critical feedback was for the Chicken Burger - it was a tad bland and not super memorable. Engine, Engine number 9 on the NY transit line. If your train falls off the track... LET IT GO! The engine room was a fail for me. I should have known right from the moment I picked this as our Saturday night dinner spot when the reservation link did not allow you to change the number of guests in your party to make a reservation! But I was persistent and called. The hostess was not very helpful as she told me she could not get us in at 4:30 as requested but just walk in- they leave walk in tables available. As I continued to alert her of the reservation website issue she finally relented and told me she had availability for 5! Why didn't she start off with that?! We get to the restaurant and the hostess station is packed. I asked my family to mull outside (up against a wall- out of the way) while I check in. It took a good 5 minutes to speak to someone and in the meanwhile my family was getting hassled about being in that area. Where are they to go? The hostess station was jammed with people and servers were walking in and out with food and drinks. This was the best option. What took so long at the hostess station? It's 5pm on Saturday and they are still taking calls instead of seating people. We are seated and our waitress was nice enough. My one complaint about her... When I place my order and then ask for a specific side of something (a condiment) she should immediately alert you if they do not have it. I would have changed my order based on this. But she didn't. They don't have blue cheese dressing here. The kids meals were a decent sized portion. No complaints from the 13 year old with chicken fingers and fries. The 3 year old did not like his mac and cheese. I will stick up for ER here and state it was good mac and cheese. it was my saving grace as thats what I ate when my meal fell flat. I had the pulled pork sandwich. It stated it is served with 'creamy cole slaw.' I am not sure who wrote the menu or who designed the recipe for their coleslaw but somebody needs a dictionary and learn the definition of creamy. It was DRY. No liquid what so ever, not even at the bottom of the cup! I do not spit food out, but I took my first bit and I had to spit it out. I felt like I licked the bottom of the produce bin at the grocery store. Awful. The sandwich was ok, luckily they did have crumbled blue cheese so that saved the flavor. My husband said his half rotisserie chicken was fine, the sides were the best part of his meal. Ohh and I ordered a side of onions rings. I got the first onion ring on the top of the tower. it was fine. I then had one a little lower and again I found myself spitting out food! It was pure MUSH! Disgusting. A drink... The waitress said she could make me something fruity and she asked so i said rum. She returned and said the bartender has a strawberry vodka and she can do something with that. I said sure. We had an upbeat, attentive server, and I really appreciated that the kitchen was able to substitute grilled chicken in the Hot Fire Burger that's topped with a habanero cheese sauce. My buddy enjoyed her bucket of steamed mussels too. We'll trek back to the Engine Room during the summer bustle per usual, but this visit on a windy, winter day sure was cozy. Hands-down most dog-friendly place to grab a bite to eat in Mystic. Came here w/ family and dog while we were visiting Mystic, CT for the first time. We got seated outside, and I ordered a drink -- "Isla del Coco", tropically spiced & toasty coconut. Going into it, here's the description: "Coconut washed Four Roses bourbon, house made coconut falernum, lemongrass & toasted coconut syrup, lime juice & coconut oolong ice cube". How was it really? Pretty spot-on. I really liked it. There was a lot of the coconut taste so that was accurate. Even the ice cubes were coconut flavored, so even when there was nothing left, the ice melted and it tasted like coconut water which was pretty cool. I'd recommend it. Food-wise, I got the Mushroom Mae Burger and I believe rest of table got Grass-fed Burger and Fried Chicken Burger. I got mine with fries. The burger and fries were both pretty awesome. One of better burgers I have tried. I'd rate the burger itself 4.5/5. Fries were pretty good too. All in all, cool spot to visit in Mystic. Shut the front door, one of the best restaurants in Mystic! There are a lot of good and popular restaurants in Mystic, but if you're looking for a more affordable one with DELICIOUS food, this is the place to go! They have such a large space with both indoor and outdoor seating. They also have a bar you can sit at for drinks and a bar where you can oversee their open kitchen. I personally love the concept of an open kitchen and think it makes the quality of food more consistent. In this open kitchen you can see them cooking and taking care of their full sized rotisserie chickens! You heard me right, they are known not only for their burgers, but for their homemade rotisserie chickens. There were so many yummy sounding things on the menu so we got a bunch to share family style. Nana's focaccia bread, baked mac n cheese, half bird dinner combo w/ mac and potato salad, onion rings, and the grass fed burger. My personal favorite was the baked mac n cheese! A must have. I also enjoyed the half bird, mac salad, and grass fed burger. I could have done without the onion rings, they needed a bit more salt/flavor but the sauces that came with it added a little. The grass fed burger was really good! I have never had a burger like that before. It had a lot of different concepts that flowed well and complimented each other.
