We had a solid time here. Nice spot inside - it's one of the surprisingly few spots in downtown Mystic where you can grab a nice sit down lunch. I had the grilled chicken sandwich, which was good but kind of unremarkable, and my wife had the lobster roll, which was good and had very generous portions. Just be careful with the lobster roll - it's listed at market price, which in our case turned out to be $45, which seems super pricey. The value was there, but we definitely had some sticker shock. Our first time to eat at Chapter One. Sydney was our waitress and attended to our food order with great repose & efficiency. We had a BLT (excellent) and arugula salad also excellent. In my opinion Chapter 1 has set the standard pretty high. Sometimes I go to restaurants where the food is just OK and the service is outstanding or the food is outstanding in the service is just OK. We went during lunchtime and we were immediately greeted with a smile from the hostess. She introduced us to our waiter, Joe, who was very attentive, friendly and outgoing. I was pleasantly surprised - the food was delicious and perfectly seasoned.We didn't wait long at any time for anything. Joe was very attentive, making sure that we were having a great time and that everything was satisfactory. Joe even packed up our to go items, keeping in mind things that might melt in the extreme heat. Although it was a little pricey, I thought it was well worth the cost. Four of us went to celebrate my little sisters birthday. I'm here very often but today was epic. Michelle the waitress, has been there for so long and I love her. The best. We (my wife, daughter and I) went to Chapter One for dinner last night. We were a bit hesitant to eat there at first as we only saw the bar section. When the incredibly friendly hostess escorted us to a table in the dining room, we were quite pleased with our accommodations! The food was VERY well prepared! My wife and daughter really enjoyed their burgers (grilled on an actual grill). I had the pastrami and upgraded to onion rings. The pastrami was perfectly cured. the onion rings were house made to perfection. The grilled asparagus was a hit at our table. We were also very fortunate to have Joe as our server. Personable and knowledgeable, he helped make our meal delightful! Another great touch was that the manager came over to us to check on us. Note: The tables are small and tightly packed together which, given the COVID times, is not for the faint of heart. Masks are not required for employees or customers. The food was pretty good. My friend told the waitress multiple times she was allergic to nuts and asked if the expresso martini flight was safe because it sounded like the tiramisu one might not be. The waitress went and checked and said the tiramisu one wasn't nut free so we swapped it with a safe one. But then the flight came and the blueberry cobbler martini smelled like amaretto and when i tasted it i knew it wasnt nut free. This restaurant is about an hour from my home in Rhode Island and I was meeting a friend who lives an hour south of there in a different part of Connecticut. We agreed to split the travel distance and met at this restaurant at his suggestion. Well, I'd say that it was a really good choice overall. We chose an early meeting time right after work for both of us on a Tuesday night, so the restaurants in the area really weren't that busy and this one was no different. We were greeted by a hostess, who brought us immediately to a table after trying to get us to sit at the bar. There were a few bar patients listening to some live entertainment, and that was definitely enough to make me not want to sit at the bar. Maybe I'm a snob, but I'm not really a big fan of live entertainment in restaurants while I'm trying to eat my dinner and enjoy a conversation with a friend that I rarely see. I know some people enjoy that and more power to them for it. And I understand from a restaurant management perspective that they are trying to draw in business on slow nights. Anyway, I peruse the menu and there were several items that looked interesting, but I settled on the signature Chapter 1 Burger with a side of french fries. Our waitress was a very young and perky girl who seemed to really enjoy chatting with customers and spent a fair amount of time talking with us about different topics. She was very attentive to our needs so kudos to the service level of this restaurant and this particular waitress. The burger was one of the better burgers I've had at a very long time and I would readily eat at this restaurant again, probably ordering this same burger, but I would be so tempted by several other interesting options on the menu. If this restaurant wasn't out of my way, I'd go there more regularly to eat my way through the menu. Diners should be aware that I was fortunate enough to go to this restaurant in the off-season, because during the summer, tourism is rampant and long wait times at restaurants is much more common. read more

Had great hopes for this place. Looked like we could get a quality drink, we left another venue and came here because my husband was craving an old fashioned. After standing in the bathroom line for 15 mins. My husband ordered an old fashioned at 10 pm from the female bartender with long brown hair. The bartender told him she was too busy to make it. It wasn't overly crowded yet because the DJ still hadn't started and all the tables had not been cleared yet. We are extremely disappointed. I have never been told by a competent bartender that they are too busy to make a drink. And honestly she had time to flip through the tv channels to change the station and to play on her cell phone. Not sure why she didn't have time to make the drink. Next time we are looking for a good drink we definitely will not return here. read more

Stopped here one Friday night for drinks with friends and continued to return weekly. Fairly large bar but a bit small of a venue in my opinion for the late night scene they were trying to accomplish. The restaurant itself seems to be in transition- it offers an intimate dining experience (low lighting, pretty decor, bar and table seating to include booths) but also places several flat screens above the bar giving it a sports bar flare as well. They clear the tables to the right of the restaurant to make a dancefloor in addition to supplying a DJ on weekend nights. Throughout the evening the crowd age gaps shifted from middle age to a younger crowd so you do get the best of both worlds here. Music choices are entirely dependent on the DJ but overall there was solid variety. As far as staff goes we received friendly and timely service at the bar. I highly recommend asking for Omar and/or Yatzi for your bartenders both were very personable and extremely knowledgeable. For drinks I recommend the espresso martini but if that is not your speed they do have tasteful seasonal cocktail menus as well. Prices were fair compared to the rest of Mystic. The security guards were extremely respectful, they helped promote a safe environment for everyone to have a good time safely without the stereotypical overbearing presence that most bar/club bouncers do. read more

The overly chewy YellowFin Tuna. -Wanted to just pay and leave without saying a word. Server noticed the blood on the plate and was embarrassed. She sent the Filet back for us. Filet returned burnt and dry. -overpriced for the lack of quality. In the paradigm of perceived value... Chapter One fits the "High Price/Low Quality/Low Value" category to a T. We went to Arethusa a Tavolo a week later and paid double of what our Crapter One bill was.... Arethusa is High Price / High Quality / High Value and I'd go there any day of the week. We came to Mystic for the day and arrived at noon - as expected many places were packed but Chapter One had room. It was a good choice. Unique menu - the Devils on Horseback was recommended as a starter and true to the recommendation it was very good. They were able to be flexible with the entree and did a great BLT without mayo or lettuce, and swapped out the fries for broccoli. The omlet was a bit onion heavy, our server Mia offered to redo it, and when we decided to keep it and pick out the onions she comped it. Highly recommend Chapter One and ask for Mia. My husband and son and I stopped here for dinner while down visiting the Aquarium a week ago. Miranda was our server and she could not have been sweeter and more accommodating of our intention to get our exhausted toddler fed ASAP.
