We stopped in last Friday on our trip up to see one of our kids. When we arrived it wasn't busy, as we came after the lunch crowd but before the dinner one. With a large side of fries and Cole slaw. The lobster bisque had actual pieces of lobster. That's what you would expect, right? It's not always so. First time here, as I look at the menu the prices are reasonable I ordered a Bloody Mary. My Bloody Mary is good. . I'm still deciding between a lobster bisque or the King Richard mussels. Small bar with a fair amount of outdoor seating in the back. A window wall at each end lets in day light. The bar takes up most of one side, with pub height tables for two or four occupying the other side. Two small, gender neutral restrooms are off a short hallway by the tables. A sign by the door says to see the host to be seated. The host stand is by the back door. Is there a back entrance thru the outdoor seating? Any way, we walk the few steps to the host stand to be returned to where we started to be seated. As the bartender is the host and waiter it may be there for his convenience. We were given a 'specials' menu along with their regular menu. I opted for their watermelon and goat cheese salad with tijan citrus dressing from their specials menu. This chopped salad also has cucumber and pickled onion. It would have been amazing with the variety of sweet melon, creamy cheese, tart onion, cool cucumber and bitter lettuce. Sadly it was drowing in dressing which is really all I could taste. The dressing is a bit heavy, less citrus than I had hoped for. Still a nice salad. Fresh. Maybe ask for yours 'lightly dressed' or 'dressing on the side'. My dining companion had the bangers and mash. The sausages are quite large, so plenty of meat here. Just not the 'bangers' we were expecting. Larger, different taste. Plenty of mash and the onion strings on top were tasty and more of them would have been welcome. They have a lot of beers to choose from with illuminated beer menus over the bar back. That's the real pull for this place. Beer lovers haven. Full bar and soft drinks on offer too. The space is comfortable, and clean. The music is loud. We walked in to a country song, followed by Billy Joel, then The Scorpions, followed by Blue Grass. A little later I remember Andrea Bocelli followed by the Rolling Stones and then fiddle music. Soooo, at some point in time you will probably hear something you enjoy. Parking is on street as far as I know, and as it's a bit outside the really touristy area you may be able to find parking and miss some traffic. Restrooms need a really good scrub. They look clean but smell like boys have been missing the bowl. You know. Definitely stop in if you enjoy a wide selection of beers to try. Great sports bar/restaurant in Mystic. Be aware, no parking and on-street 2-hour parking is limited, and public lots are pricey. I had the fish and chips, which had a huge piece of fish but they pit it over the fries and cold slaw. This made my fish all mayonnaisey (new word) and mushy. The bar was doing their trivia night so it was packed and quite loud, we had to ask to move to a different table at first because we couldn't hear each other talk (understandable for a pub on a special activity night, though). The table we moved to was by the front door, and people were smoking right outside and holding the door open which wasn't great, but again understandable considering the venue. The food itself was excellent. Everything came out hot and well seasoned. The Tuck chips are a fry of their own design, very salt & lemon peppery, crispy and thick. Chicken was crispy, not dry at all, well cooked. Cheese curds were great; portion size was too much for 2 people, very sharp flavor. The Ruben was awesome. Stopped by with a friend from out of town for a late night dinner. The service was solid, and the atmosphere was about what you'd expect from an Irish pu; some dive-bar elements, but it didn't feel dirty (although our table was a bit sticky and could have used a better wipe down). The scotch egg appetizer was tasty: a crispy outside and well-set white, while the yolk was still decently runny (the gravy, served on the side, was quite flavorful too). My main courses left a lot to be desired. I got the clam cakes and chowder combo (on the list of specials). The clam cakes were chewy and pretty bland; there was no tartar sauce or other type of moisture provided - I had to get a slice of lemon from the bar just to make them somewhat enjoyable; it was pretty disappointing. The chowder was enjoyable, but didn't taste particularly special. An underwhelming meal, and a fat cry from the awesome scallop roll they had available as a special when I visited a few years back. It's always difficult to find parking here; I personally got lucky finding parking in the lot by the art museum, but even spots there were very limited. The Tavern itself has an indoor and outdoor seating area. The indoor scene seems to cater towards those watching sports on the TVs and drinking beer, while the outside patio is more for hanging out and enjoying the weather and chatting with company. For an appetizer, I got the Crab Dip which came with naan. It was very cheesy and had a good amount of imitation crab, and I enjoyed it very much. This is definitely a sizable portion meant to be shared between 2-3 people. For my entree, I got the Bangers and Mash. The mashed potatoes were smooth, the onions were flavorful, and I especially enjoyed the pork sausage. It was good but nothing crazy. The service was nice but a bit slow. read more

We ordered a couple of beers, a plate of Scotch Eggs, Bangers and Mash, and the Chicken Tikka Masala. Everything was so good and I'm glad I tried Scotch Eggs for the first time here. Service was really quick and efficient but not as friendly (no checking to see if we're okay, etc but for us, we're fine with not being bothered during our meal). It really is more like a pub even though the restaurant menu is decent in size. There is parking across the street but it's a tad pricey. We paid a little over $5 for an hour of parking. It was ok. Decent bar food. My favorite part was the ambiance. We started with the cheese curds. I think our Midwest upbringing has spoiled us with great cheese curds and our expectations are high. It doesn't matter that you may have to pay for parking! This place is great. The seating area is not spacious but that adds to the fun sometimes. We started with calamari and dragon style wings. Both had some heat and were great. Steak tips were flavored nicely and paired well with spinach, smashed potatoes and onion straws. The burger was very good. My girlfriend, friends and I met up for dinner when my friend from Brooklyn came up. Late, Friday night, food was needed. For those that don't know, Mystic is pretty much dead after 8pm. I looked at options and Friar Tuck's was the option, and it absolutely was the correct answer! We walked in and instantly were seated. They were packed but even in a small space, we had a spot. We got menus and our drink orders were taken. First off, beer selection: plenty. Craft beer, domestics, plentiful. They also have tons of drink options for those wanting something stronger. We made our food order: scotch eggs, chicken club sandwich, fish and chips, and a Reuben. The food came out FAST. The scotch eggs... I never had one until then, and I was not disappointed! Hot, VERY flavorful, but sadly not enough. I could've eaten more of these! Then for the main dishes. I had the bangers and mash, and it was perfection. Sausages cooked perfectly with the snap when you bite. Savory, perfectly seasoned, and the gravy tied everything together. There was a small hiccup: my friend who ordered the Reuben, was given the steak sandwich accidentally. He told the waiter and the waiter instantly apologized. My friend wasn't upset about it though, still an exceptional sandwich! The waiter came back with the correct order but after my friend had told him it wasn't a problem at all. He even insisted to not charge him. As soon as he left my friend went "tough s*it, he's still getting $20 and a tip". We all laughed about it, because hey, a busy tavern open late night Friday in mystic, accidents happen, and this isn't a life changing accident. Just the fact the waiter was kind, patient, and that considerate, easily deserved a higher tip, at the very least. I live live in CT on the short of the line, Mystic is on the shoreline too it's about 1hr 15mkn drive, give or take. My friend who I've known for a long time is coming up to visit for a weekend so stayed here. Hung out around here. Hotel rooms out there were expensive even though we went in January. But he was able to book a place on one of those websites. Can't remember the name. Anyway, this place was great. We had dinner there. It had a variety of chicken wings which we ordered for appetizers. I had gotten a grilled chikn sandwich. My friend wound up getting it some really huge hamburger. So anyway, making sure if you're going out there to stay make sure you adventure way in advance. You could always cancel them free of charge w/ a certain hour of time.
