Our annual trek to DPI (as we celebrated our anniversary), was once again enjoyable. It never fails, the dwelling built in 1756 is truly enchanting. The shrimp presented in the cocktail were cold, crisp and fresh and the sauce had a great taste and consistency. We also enjoyed the DPI skewers that included a bit of steak tip, a sea scallop and a fresh shrimp that was that was grilled to perfection and drizzled with a bit of horseradish cream sauce. The staff members are always welcoming and the aura of the visitors -since we became a nation seem ever-present. Bravo DPI... See you soon. On a visit to Mystic, I could not wait to find a restaurant that served more seafood than I could easily settle on. Sitting in the Mystic Marriott lobby, yelp pointed us to the Captain Daniel Packer Inne. What a find. Although the building was restored in 1979, it's origin dates to 1756. Everything seems to have been preserved -including the aura. As you would expect with a building older than the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it is small in size but large in hospitality. Without reservations, we did not stand much of a chance in the upstairs dinning area, but a flight of stairs down to the pub in the cellar... and we were seated in 20 minutes. For appetizers, we had the phyllo dough lobster lollipops and an order of artichoke hearts that were resting in a light lobster sauce (the artichoke that is) that invited us to soak up what was left with the delicious homemade bread we were served. For our main course we had the halibut steak that was sitting on top of freshly mashed potatoes with a smattering of fresh corn kernels. The customer service attendants were mindful of their tables and visited at opportune times. -Not when you start to take a bite and never did we wonder where they might have gone off to. Parking was a bit of a challenge but by far worth the hunt. If you are looking for a very friendly restaurant with a historical beginning and great food... Look no further. I must first start by saying that I've been going to CDPI for 30 years. Honestly, on a cold winters day there's no better place than the cellar bar to sit in front of a fire, have a pint, and soup. The best. The building itself is gorgeous with thick beams and great finishes. It's a beautiful place even if it is a little tight. With that said, we had a party of 10 and had reservations in advance. Parking is always tricky, but we got a good spot in the lot and were very happy. The wait for the table was maybe 10 minutes which was not too bad. The waitress was very good and she took care of our water, drinks, and bread right away. The place was busy but we really were pleased with the service! I ordered the fish and chips. Most of the table ordered a steak, veggie, and mashed potatoes. Truffle fries was the appetizer that landed on my end of the table. They were not my favorite. Those who had the steak seemed happy with the meal. Both of us who had the fish and chips were not happy with the meal. We had fish and chips at Steak Loft the night before- and they did not compare. They were perfect. The order I had at Daniel Packard were heavy and filling but I was missing the light tempura batter, the crunch and soft fresh fish, and the great tartar sauce that is the standard for fish and chips! I didn't take my leftovers which is not the norm for me. I'll swing by in the winter for a pint in front of the fire no doubt, but I think another dinner is not in my future. read more

Came here for lunch on a Thursday around 2pm. The parking was lot was full but we were able to find parking on the street down the road. We were able to have a seat anywhere and we took a seat at the bar. The inside is nice and has a great ambiance. We ordered a New England Clam Chowder to split and then I ordered a Grilled Tuna Steak Sandwich. The Clam Chowder was good and so was the sandwich. Nothing crazy good but good. Prices were average, ~$12 for the soup and ~$19 for the sandwich. The food took a decent amount of time to come out, it felt like 45 minutes. It was very filling. read more

Great find, feels like a place that people keep To themselves. The bar is not a large space, but the stone walls and low ceilings make you feel like you stepped back in time and found a place that provides shelter from the storm. Bartender was friendly and managed the bar with proficiency. We walked so I can't speak to parking, but a great spot and worth a pint or three. read more

What a wonderful little place. We found it via Yelp and the promise of a good hot lobster roll. I had the DPI special Lemon Chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. Simply said, all 3 were excellent and together, outstanding. The place is quaint, but not too crowded in the bar area. Upstairs looked like a more formal setting. A 4-piece jazz group was setting up next to us and we would have loved to have stayed and caught a set, but the bar rapidly filled up and the opportunity was lost (maybe next time). read more

Okay this place! I want to keep my little secret but it wouldn't be fair. This is hands down the best meal you could have in Mystic. My family visits Mystic every six months and this is one place we have always kinda skipped for one reason or the other. Now I'm sitting here dealing with regret because it will be my first choice for all my upcoming trips. When I tell you I haven't been impressed with the flavors and quality of the food in a long time, well this place absolutely changed that. The food here is outstanding! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. We had the chicken dish and the sauce was amazing. We also ordered This dish under casual plates which had skewers with sirloin, shrimp and scallops over oven roasted potatoes, soooo good! The dessert was a 10/10. Our waiter was super friendly, funny and attentive. We forgot his name because we were so into the food but he had a ponytail and if he reads this I hope he knows he made our dining experience an awesome one. This place also has a lot of history and has been family run and operated for years! This is our new favorite place in Mystic! A must try when you're in the area. read more

Been going there for about forty years never had a foreigner for a server today being Easter Sunday we had a woman that was way to aggressive wanted us in and out on top of that our bill was 197 we left 240 all cash she comes over and throws the cash on our table and says was there something wrong with the service you only left me a fifteen dollar tip and we said can we see the bill she hands us a different bill that wasn't ours we had her go find the correct bill and showed her we left a 20+% tip she apologized and walked away My daughter is a server and bartender she said if she ever did that she would be fired We will be back the food is always good just not that server read more

We ate in the tavern and the only negative I could say is it is crowded down there. I loved the ambience and even though it is crowded...sound was not bad. We purchased a home in Mystic last year and now consider ourselves locals. Over the past year we've tried many of the restaurants in town with the highest reviews. Honestly, DPI ended up being one of the last places we visited because the reviews weren't quite as strong. After going a couple of times over the past few months, we can confidently say that was a mistake. DPI has hands-down been the best dining experience we've had in Mystic. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, the food was outstanding both times, and the waitstaff were fantastic. Everything about the experience felt welcoming and well done. DPI is a real gem and we're so glad it's part of the Mystic community. We're especially looking forward to spending time at the pub this summer. What a cute pub underneath the inn! As a tourist I felt inclined to try some seafood while visiting Mystic. Firstly, the interior design of the pub is on theme and I appreciated the vintage feel. The bartender was very kind and even gave us some tips on places to visit while in the area. I also enjoyed the food and drinks more than I thought I would - their house beer which was a pale ale was fantastic. It was like a fruity Blue Moon - I would buy this again if they sold it in stores. Their special of the day was a sirloin dip which exceeded my expectations. Their lobster roll was equally very flavorful and packed full of lobster meat. I would say that the star of the meal were the fries though. I don't know how to explain this through words but the texture on the fries was crunchy outside and soft inside and deserved their own recognition. Definitely this place is on the must visit again list! read more

Recently there for an event. Had the Scallops Nantucket which were just mediocre. They were just missing something - they had no flavor and the cheese on top was just odd and unappetizing. Came here with 2 friends on a Thursday evening. I got the lemon pepper chicken and clam chowder. The clam chowder had nice chunks of clam in it, but I found the lemon pepper chicken, which came highly recommended, to be too dry. The mashed potatoes it came on top of were good. This was such a treat! I wanted to make sure I got to really get a taste of what East Coast food was like while I was in Mystic for the weekend and stumbled across this. We were able to just walk in on Friday night without reservations. We walked over from our Airbnb and struggled a bit to find the entrance. Bread basket with butter and garlic- Not going to lie, seeing the whole head of garlic as a pairing for the bread was what got me to choose here rather than the other places. I loved mashing the butter onto the bread. Lobster Roll (Cold)- I'm not the biggest fan of lobster but I felt like I needed to get this since I was coastal. I upgraded my fries to truffle fries. I ended up getting the cold version made with mayo instead of the hot with butter. I loved this! The portion of lobster was very generous. Clam Chowder- This was so good that we ended up ordering a second! Service was great and I would recommend to anybody in the area!!!!! read more

There was a time (20+ years ago) that my wife and I probably went here every month or two. At that time their clam chowder was phenomenal, and I always held that chowder up in my mind and compared every other chowder to it. In the interim I have only had two chowders that I would even put in the same league. Last night we had dinner here, and everything was excellent, the atmosphere was of course as wonderful as always. The only disappointment I had was the quality of the chowder has taken such a drastic turn. It was very onion heavy (my daughter thought maybe leeks) that I couldn't taste clam at all. It was also very thick and gluey. Lastly (and I know this is the luck of the ladle) if I got any actual clams, I didn't notice them. Clearly a lot is going right in that kitchen, but I think the head chef needs to go back to the drawing board on the chowder. For such an icon of a restaurant to be serving that chowder is a true shame. read more

This is such a gem of a restaurant! Slightly hidden from all the other restaurants that line the downtown area, but it is certainly not to be missed! Great historic place to eat - excellent food, great atmosphere, and great waitstaff. The menu includes the pub items and a nice selection of sandwiches, salads, burgers and wonderful entrees to choose from. The calamari and onion soup were delicious as were the fish and chips, the fish had a perfect crispy shell and moist in the inside. The DPI fries are a must eat. On a trip to Mystic, CT and a local recommended Capt. Parker's Inn. Absolutely fantastic. So much so, that we ate there twice! The downstairs pub seems fresh out of the late 18th century with restored stone walls and hand-hewn beams in the ceiling. Great signature drinks too. They have the same menu as the dining room upstairs which is also vintage early 19th century. The food is great the waitstaff remarkably courteous and helpful. I actually had more lobster in the signature Mac n' cheese than I could eat! Location in downtown across from the water. The pub is more casual, but the dining room is more business casual, and they take reservations. I will be back!!! read more

We chose to sit at the bar & ordered some ninigritti oysters & some French onion soup along with a Packer Manhattan. The cocktail was carefully prepared with Woodford reserve (by request) and a touch of luxardo cherry syrup by our funny & charming bartender (I apologize for not recalling her name) & was delivered in a coup glass. Shaken & icy cold with a nearly black Luxardo cherry. Absolutely delicious. The oysters & soup arrived shortly afterwards & were excellent. The surroundings & energy of the 200+ year old tavern ooze from the the brick interior. A memorable experience that I'd recommend for those who appreciate the spirits with spirits! read more

One of the finest dining experiences I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I have been there twice and can't wait to go back.

Just got home from DPI. We were given a terribly crammed-in table for our party of ten (had reservations) on the upper floor. Half of us couldn't move our seat back without hitting your head on the dormer. The acoustics were horrible as we could hardly hear the person next to you. Six of our party were in the restaurant on time. But four of our party arrived at location on time but were a little late (20 mins) getting in due to virtually no parking available. They eventually had to park at a marina among the boats and walk. During our wait, we were informed that we were only allotted two hours for our reservation by the waitstaff and then the management, rudely I might add. After we finished dinner, we were asked if anyone wanted dessert. Some said yes. The waitress left which we assumed to get dessert menus. However after a rather long delay she returned and informed us that we couldn't have dessert because they had another reservation. At this point, we were only 20 minutes past our ALLOTED time. We left and agreed that was the last time we would ever go the Daniel Packer Inne. When the reservations were made we were not informed we were on a strict time limit. If we were, we would not have chosen DPI as our party was from three states and coffee and dessert would have been nice before the long trip back home. read more

I always like to sit downstairs in the bar when I go to dpi. The vibes there in the winter are top notch and just so relaxing and welcoming. I usually like to sit at the bar and get a burger with fries. If I'm extra hungry I'll get a cup of chowder. If I'm there in the summer I love their lobster roll and whatever summer cocktail the bartender recommends. It's just such a cool, old and unique spot in mystic. Well worth a visit when you're in downtown mystic. Has such charm and such good food. read more

There are many great places to eat in Mystic. But even with the tough competition, the DPI remains my favorite. Over the years they have never misfired on a meal. It's that consistency that sets great restaurants apart. Downstairs is a museum quality experience and the service has always been impeccable but non intrusive. We were visiting an old friend in Mystic and she took us here for dinner. We sat in the basement pub which was perfect for us. Not fancy but we were served great food (a special shout out for the excellent NON-greasy fish and chips cooked to perfection) and some delicious drinks. Bottom line: don't sit upstairs. Drinks are made my untrained waitresses and food was not worth it. Came in on Saturday night and were seated upstairs. Ambiance is fine but you're jammed in a tiny room so your words can travel pretty far and you can hear other conversations. Started with two cocktails, an old fashioned from the menu and a dirty martini. The waitress came back 5 minutes later and said she made them herself...it showed. The old fashioned was supposed to have brown sugar in it and it did, but she mixed it all wrong. There was a chunk of brown sugar at the bottom of my glass, there was way too much ice in the drink, and it just tasted like a bourbon over ice since I couldn't stir in the sugar (too cold). The martini wasn't dirty, way too much vermouth. I think the problem is they have a small bar upstairs where the waitress makes a drink with what she has. I get it: you don't want to be carrying drinks up those narrow stairs, but the quality sucked. Onto the food. Started with the honey chipotle wings. Probably the only good thing we ate. The dipping sauce had no flavor though and the wings weren't sauced correctly: some were dry, others were wet. The mains: fish and chips and a tenderloin steak wrap. The fish had way too much batter on it and was more batter than fish. The tenderloin was cooked well done (they didn't offer any variance), and the wrap was poorly put together. One bite I'd get a mushroom, another a large chunk of steak, and another was just spinach. It was supposed to have a chimichurri sauce in there but only got a small taste of that in one bite. The fries just sucked. This place might be better if you eat down at the bar, but it was too packed and they sat us upstairs. Would not recommend. read more

We went to lunch on a Friday, and they were extremely busy, they were only seating in the bar area, as they didn't have a server for upstairs, so we had to a few minutes for a table. It was a quaint little bar area, where we were seated. The server was pleasant and attentive. We started with soup, both the onion soup and New England clam chowder were very tasty. The bowls were bigger than a cup but smaller than a typical soup bowl, but were the perfect size, but a little overpriced, at $10 a bowl. The lobster roll was served on a toasted brioche roll, with butter on the side, so you can determine the amount of butter you want on your lobster roll. The fish and chips were ok, the batter on the fish was on the greasy side and tasted like old oil, but the fish was nice and flaky and the tarter sauce that was served on the side was flavorful and zesty. In honesty I wished I had chosen the lobster roll as that appeared to have been the better choice. read more

Second time visiting. First time we were in the upstairs dining room. Was just lovely but this time we decided to head downstairs for the pub vibe in the basement and boy were we happy. Perfect for a snowy wintry quiet afternoon. The food is tremendous and the bartender was chatty but not invasive. Michelle was an excellent mixologist and we had a great time chatting with her. We are locals so we know winter is the best time to visit mystic. I had the hot lobster roll with that glorious sherry butter and my husband had a Reuben. We tried a seasonal cinnamon cocktail and a few other drinks. Overall just a perfect afternoon. Definitely will be back! read more
