    Bean and cheese pupusas
    Julie S.

I was happy to try this new spot in downtown San Jose. They are located where Iguana's used to be. The interior looks very well decorated, painted in purple with lots of interesting pictures on the walls. They have a really good selection of pupusas. I tried the garlic and cheese, which wasn't overly garlicky, but it had a lot of cheese and good flavor. Their pupusas are a bit larger than average, and I think two of them would make a meal! They are $5 each, which seems like a bargain in this economy. We also ordered a super nachos to share, which were good, but they used cheese sauce and not cheese melted under a broiler. The staff is very nice and friendly. Food is made fresh to order. I will definitely be back to try some of the different flavors of pupusas!

I had 2 pupusas , $5 each. I had the chicken and cheese and loroco and cheese. The curtido was good, the mild sauce was very mild, but still good. I would like to go back to try the bean & cheese and a sope. I just wish the staff was friendlier and more inviting. I waited a few minutes before someone knew I was there, but it's ok, it gave me a chance to decide what I wanted, but it would've been nice to be acknowledged upon entering.

    Pupusas and rice. Yum!

Stopped by after road trippin' from LA and had such a great meal! The vibes are welcoming, the staff is friendly, and they were happy to answer all our questions. Plus, the music is poppin' and love the outdoor seating - what more can a girl ask for? I tried the spinach & cheese pupusa and the garlic & cheese pupusa with a side of rice- absolutely delicious! I inhaled all of it. Definitely recommend if you're in the mood for pupusas.

revuelta, chorizo, and jalapeño (all partially eaten because they are big!)

I ordered the jalapeño & cheese pupusa, the chorizo & papa pupusa, and the revuelta pupusa, and they were all so good. Everything came out super fresh and the portions were really good too. Each one was so filling, but my favorite was the jalapeño and cheese pupusa. The workers were all really friendly and helpful when I was trying to decide what to order, making my experience even better. There's also plenty of space inside and outside if you want to sit down and eat with your family. I would will be coming back!

A beautiful building, incredible staff and amazing food. I had one of the best BEAN & Cheese Pupusa and Supreme Chicken Quesadilla!

A wonderful family moved in to the old Iguana burritozilla space and has made it a delicious place to get scrumptious pupusas. There is outdoor seating with accessible entrance but I didn't see another way to go up the stairs to order. There is a lot of indoor seating and right now it is decorated for the holidays. A huge win for me is that they were willing to make my pupusas without cheese (not all places are). The wait was about 7-10 minutes because they make the pupusas to order. They were very large and had a solid amount of filling. They were perfectly grilled and not greasy. The salsa is a little spicy and the curtido (cabbage topping) didn't have salt so I think that good improve a little. They use pinto beans I think, which is fine, but I prefer the black beans. They also sell Mexican classics like burritos, tacos, tortas, flautas, and gorditas. The service is super friendly- you order at a counter and they bring your plate to your table but you bus your own table. Cumbias on the surround sound make it festive and the vibes are fun! Definitely our new pupusa spot!

Good service and fast. Nice eating area and spacious on the other side. I wasn't a fan of the slaw but it did help cut down on the spiciness from the salsa. Papa and Chorizo was filling.

    Chicken and cheese pupusa

I canner in on s Thursday night, and thankfully they have late hours! I was able to go up to the cash register and had attentive service. I asked questions and they were able to answer them as well as have a pleasant conversation with the cashier! I had ordered 1 chicken and cheese pupusa and 1 revuelta pupusa. They were very good. The slaw and salsa complemented the pupusas well and had good flavor themselves. I would come again!

    Revuelta Papusa

Walked in around 1pm and took a look at the menu. Knew I wanted to try a papusa, and went with the revuelta (beans, cheese, chicharrón). It did NOT disappoint. Super flavorful, good size, and the service was quick and friendly. This spot doesn't look a lot different from the Iguana's that was here, but it definitely has a clean, new, fresh vibe. Try them out!

Saw this place pop ip on the DTSJ page I follow on instagram so decided to try it for lunch. They have pupusas and tacos. Let me just say the crown jewel here is the pupusas. The tacos are basic and the tortillas aren't handmade so they're nothing special, instead order several pupusas! The pupusas are made fresh and you can taste freshness. I got the papa & chorizo one and it was delicious. A ridiculous cheese pull and it comes with curtido (which was delicious even on its own) and salsa. They are a good size and for $4.95 each, it's a great price!

Brand new spot in town, I checked it out and tried the tacos, and they're absolutely delicious! Packed with meat and surprisingly not dry like many others around. Super saucy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked... my new favorite place for steak tacos. The location is easy to find, right where Iguanas used to be, with plenty of seating both inside and outside. Friendly staff and great vibes all around. Definitely worth checking out!

    Pupusa revuelta

The pupusas were SO good! I love that they have spicy curtido. The revuelta pupusa was my favorite! The service was friendly and the place was clean. Will be back!

The platter includes one pupusa of your choice, one pastelito, one chicken tamal, one corn tamal, fried yuca with chicharron, one empanada, plantains, sour cream, pickled cabbage, and pickled red onions. I chose the pork, bean, and cheese pupusa, which ended up being one of my favorite items. It tasted authentic with great tortilla texture and flavor. The pastelito was nice and crispy. The chicken tamal was good and similar to a Mexican tamale, but with a softer masa. The corn tamal was sweet and tasted like a cornbread muffin. The fried yuca was good and had a similar texture to potatoes. The chicharron was okay and was a bit bland. The empanada was more of a dessert, as it was sweet with a custard-like filling. The plantains were cooked perfectly and had a nice balanced of sweetness. Also ordered one pupusa with pork and cheese. Personally, I prefer the version that includes beans, but this one was still worth trying. The sopa de pata is a cow feet soup that includes cabbage, carrots, tripe, and yuca, served with tortilla, dried chili peppers, and dried oregano on the side. The broth was flavorful, but there were a lot of vegetables. The cow feet did not have a lot of tendon, so it was basically two pieces of bone that took up a lot of space in the bowl. The tripe was soft, and I like how it was prepared well without any unpleasant smell. The horchata Salvadoreña was refreshing, but okay. Plenty of parking. Customer service was good, and both the waitress and kitchen staff were friendly and welcoming. The indoor dining is small and can fit about 20 to 25 people. Overall, this is a solid spot for Salvadoran food!

I tried the popular baleada, which is a home-made flour tortilla filled with a layer of mashed red beans, queso fresco, eggs and with or without meat (I got it with carne asada). The flour tortilla was just as other described - soft, buttery smooth, almost melt in your mouth goodness. The carne asada was dry and hard so I could've gone without. I bet a braised beef like barbacoa would've been perfect for this item. It also came with salsa and I selected mild which gave it a nice bright flavor. I also ordered a chicken tamale (they also offer pork) and I was surprised to find a whole chicken wing (no skin) stuffed into the tamale! I broke into it using a fork and hit something hard which turned out to be the bones. But honestly, this was one of the best tamales I've tried in a long time. Flavorful, moist, and a nice sized portion. It came wrapped in what I think was banana leaf. The service was fast on a Wednesday night and there were a handful of friendly patrons seated nearby. You could tell that they were regulars. The space was intimate with around 10-15 tables seating about 4 people each. Maya's Cafe menu has a wide assortment of dishes to choose from: serving breakfast dishes like chilaquiles, lunch items such as burritos, or soups and full on dinner plates with rice, beans, and choice of protein. There's even more selection and the whole menu is in Spanish so I'll be sure to use Google Translate next time!
