Envy Hair Salon is located on Kapiolani in the same area as Hawaii National Bank. I was in a desperate situation. I had a last minute cosplay shoot in a couple days but my hair had gotten so long! There was no way I could fit all that into my wig. I called my usual stylist but she was completely unavailable. So of course I jumped on my handy dandy Yelp app to begin my search for a salon. A number of great salons came up, I decided to call Envy Hair Salon because of the good reviews and I saw a few of my friends went here as well. Lucky for me they had an appointment available! SCORE! When I arrived to the salon, the staff was nothing but wonderful. Even my hairstylist was super friendly. And I'm sure my stylist tried really hard to give me the look I wanted, but she really didn't =/ I showed her a picture of the style and color ombre I wanted. Unfortunately she said they did not carry that particular color. Meh, no big deal. I was fine without the color. But I still wanted an ombre look. I also wanted layers and to have the V effect in the back. However, because I left with my hair curled I really couldn't tell how the layers and cut was. But the next day after washing my hair, there wasn't much layers and it was almost going straight across on the bottom. Also the color done to my hair looks more like highlights. Sometimes I like to part my hair differently and flip my hair to the side and style it that way. You know change it up a bit. However after getting my hair done, now if I flip my hair to the side I have a large dark color patch (which is my natural hair color) and then the color she put in my hair starts awkwardly in the middle =___= read more

I have been a client of Cleo since she was at Macy's (or was it JCPenney)...it has definitely been over 20 years and I have never been disappointed. So I was tired of growing out my hair and needed to get it all chopped off and the way I wanted to do it was with an asymmetrical undercut. The problem with that was I was nervous to let just any stylist do it so I went on Yelp and found Envy Hair Salon. I booked my appointment and came in to a nice, clean, and spacious salon and was immediately greeted by Cleo, who told me she would be working with me. I was really nervous but Cleo really pulled through for me. She was so nice and friendly and excited to work on my hairstyle, offering suggestions and explaining her work to me every step of the way. I'm super happy with my new undercut and I can't wait to come back in and touch it up in a few weeks! The only problem is the parking. The lot is quite small and there's not a lot of stalls there. When I moved back to Honolulu 3 1/2 years ago, I really didn't want to go back to my old hairstylist. I could never walk out of there and go shopping or dinner - I usually had to go home to re-do my hair . . . so, I asked a friend who she went to and she sent me here to see Jeanette. I can honestly say, I am thrilled to have found Jeanette (a huge thank you to my friend for the referral). She takes her time, listens to what you want and provides excellent service. She is friendly and her salon is clean, upscale and modern. The hair washing stations are the best - you actually LAY back while you get washed . . its very relaxing. She does my color, highlights, cut and style and I walk out of there looking awesome. I can go out to eat, go shopping - all without having to redo my hair. In fact, usually after she colors, cuts and styles me, I'm able to go for 2 days with out having to redo my hair - just run a brush thru it and its good. She gives a great deep cleansing scalp massage and is not sloppy with the running water or hair color like some places are. There is ample parking now that the building has instituted a mandatory sign in sheet, so allow a couple minutes to walk to the lobby and write down your vehicle info so you don't get towed. Her prices are reasonable. Hair cut is $55. Color varies - Last time I did the works, color, highlights, cut and got out of there for $150 plus tip. read more

I am seventy years old. If you assume I have had my hair done every three months since I was 12 years old, I have had well over 200 experiences at salons. Some were great, others were awful. Out of all those experiences, I would rate my visit with Monika in the bottom three. She is the worst at color I have ever experienced, without doubt. The cut was just as bad. This is the first time, people felt compelled to tell me I had a "terrible cut" (as if I didn't already know!). She seems to be a nice person, but I will never let her touch my hair again. Salon Envy is very modern looking salon with high ceilings, I really appreciate the space. I love Gina, she is a Master Stylist and has been so for over 30 years. I am so happy I found this salon, and specifically Cleo Lee. She is absolutely amazing. I have long fine blonde hair, and it is difficult to style. My bangs always fly away even if I spray lots of hairspray, and waves never hold for more than an hour. Therefore, it is very important to me that my haircut looks great naturally. You know how if you watch enough YouTube tutorials and pin enough tutorials on Pinterest, you become a master of that thing? No? Me either, but I did learn to cut my own hair from YouTube and Pinterest and was doing it for almost a year! But, it was time for a change and I needed a professional. And that professional is Cleo! I've known Cleo for a few years now, but only have only started seeing her this year! Two of my friends go to her and they both highly recommended her...and their hair is always nice! Cleo is very personable and makes you feel comfortable at her chair! I first went in for a regular A-line cut, but the way my hair grows, it kept flipping out in the back...so I went back to trusty old Pinterest to look for ideas and found some A-lines with an undercut. I texted Cleo and she was excited to do it! The salon itself is clean and modern looking with a small waiting area and comfy chairs. There are about 10 stations and there are always other stylists and customers being helped. I wouldn't use the restroom, unless I REALLY had to (once, so far). It's a restroom in the back of the building and just seems sketchy. I'm one of the most pickiest people when it comes to finding the right hair stylist. This is the reason I rarely cut my hair and have never truly found someone to go to on a regular basis. That is until I visited Envy Hair Salon a couple of months ago and found June. She is the nicest and most meticulous stylist I've ever met. When I first met her, I got a haircut and color, which took 3 hours! My butt was numb by the end of my appointment. It took a hella long time, but I truly appreciated the care she took in making sure my hair came out great. The shampoo and rinse alone took about 20 minutes, but I didn't complain. The head massage was awesome...I almost fell asleep. I also appreciated the fact that she slowly cut the length off my hair and only cut more when I asked her to. I'd rather a stylist cut less from the start and work from there rather than chopping off all my hair from the get go. She's a keeper and I've already booked my next haircut with her. Free ample parking in a convenient location on the corner of Kapiolani and Piikoi. Also super clean premises with swanky modern decor. I love the way the owner decorated her salon. It really shows how much she cares about her business. Cost is moderately high, but it's on par with other salons of the same caliber. I believe the haircuts start at $50 or $55. Totally worth it though for the service and results you get. TIP: If you book an appointment with June, make sure to give her enough time. I would recommend giving her at least 1 1/2 hours for a haircut and up to 3 hours for cut and color (to be on the safe side). If you're a "on-the-go" kind of person, I heard Jeanette is quick, but fabulous. read more

Can I just take the time to say how AMAZING Sky is?! I have been through so much hair trauma after going blonde and was in need of a major hair miracle! I went to Sky for a color and cut. I showed Sky a video of the exact cut and color I wanted and we started right away! Sky gave me the most beautiful cut and color and my hair is exactly what I envisioned. Now, I would really like to explain how amazing it was to see Sky do my hair. The way she colored my hair was in no way like any other hair stylist I've ever seen. Sky is so detailed and precise with each and every strand of hair, she spends so much time and effort making sure that each strand of hair is in it's perfect place. I come to envy now after following stylist extraordinaire, SKY, from the W salon. I have been seeing her for about 5 years now and can honestly say she is the absolute best. I have crazy curly frizzy Hawaiian hair, and she does my straight perms. Sky knows how to cut your hair with the shape of your face and uses the best products on the market. I FINALLY found a hairstylist!! This place is located at the corner of Kapiolani and Piikoi. There is free ample parking. The salon has modern decor and is very clean. I love their shampoo station because you lay down on, what looks like, a BED vs a chair at normal salons. I'm very picky when it comes to my hair and I never really found a hairstylist who listened to me and what I wanted. So for that reason I didn't cut my hair for a year and a half. I found Envy Hair Salon through Yelp and read the reviews. The only good reviews with real explanations were in March, May, and July 2011. So I decided that I would make an appointment and if I really loved my hair after leaving the salon, I would write my own review. (Signed up just to write this review!) I got my hair cut yesterday from June. She is GREAT!!! My hair length was just below my tail bone and the cut I wanted was an inverted bob similar to Victoria Beckham. June was very nice and asked all the right questions. Ex: are you sure you want the cut that short? Where/how do you want it to fall? I told her I was nervous about cutting my hair so short because it would be the shortest I've ever cut it. So she suggested a length to cut and if I wanted it shorter, I could tell her. In her words, "I don't want to cut it so short and then you feel like that's not what you wanted. You have your own opinion of how you want your hair to look." that made me feel so much better! She was very meticulous and told me what she was doing to my hair. The cut took about an hour and 45 minutes but it was fine with me because June really took the time to care for my hair and I really appreciated i! BEST hair cut ever! read more

Riiight. So, whereas I thought I could hit the Yelp jackpot based on prior reviews, instead I learned a valuable lesson about requesting a stylist whose name is *mentioned* in reviews, and not just whomever is available that day at a highly-rated salon. I won't say the name of the stylist who cut my hair, as she tried her hardest and did spend a considerable amount of time getting the layers to blend nicely. Trouble is, I think I got the only kind of layers she actually knows how to do - a fairly straightforward, conservative bob, nothing like the edgy, layered sculpture in the picture I brought in. I've bounced from salon-to-salon for years now, trying to replace a couple of stylists that I lost for one reason or another (pregnancy, new salon, whatever). Instead, I'm still stuck on the path to hair redemption because Envy did not work out as planned. It's not that I hate my haircut, I just can't say I love it. It's really not "me," though I feel she could have taken the time to ask more questions or get a better feel for what I wanted. Or heck, actually gone for the gusto and given me a cut like I asked for. On the plus side, parking is free and easy (register in the sign-in sheet by the elevator) and the hair wash sink was THE most comfortable I've ever sat in. My best haircut and color ever. Booked an early morning appointment and found that a bunch of people were waiting outside. Apparently they open exactly at the first appointment time. How this place works is that basically you schedule with your individual stylist. The only thing that is lacking is a receptionist up front to welcome everyone. You are greeted by your stylist. I don't remember my hairstylist's name, but she was a skinny blonde lady. She made sure that I got the color that I wanted and took time to counsel with me. Overall really experienced and friendly. Now, 3 weeks later, I like my haircut and color even more than the day I got it cut. So before it was J Salon, now its Envy Hair Salon that has earned the honor of being the most I have ever spent on a haircut/color. I originally went to Envy on a living social deal for Kiara. I don't go back to stylists very often as I usually leave disappointed. That has never been the case since using Kiara. I leave the salon and can go straight on with my day without feeling the need to cut my own extra layers in or re-style it. She listens and when she says she's only going to take an inch and a half off, she means it. Her color process is good too. I have a lot of sun bleached highlights and dry hair, but she manages to blend it all together and keep my hair healthy. I had the same hair stylist for 3 years in California before moving here (Michael Brandon salon in Pleasanton, CA), and because he was so good I was anxious about finding a new stylist when I moved to Hawaii. Salon Envy is the second salon I have been to since moving to Hawaii and I was very pleased with how my haircut turned out! The first salon I tried here gave me a decent cut but cost $100 (35% more than what I paid at my top-notch salon in the Bay Area). So when Hera at Salon Envy let me know it would be $55 I was pleased but a little skeptical. Hera took her time and did a great job giving me the classic, softly layered haircut I was looking for. Kimmy has been cutting my hair for about 6 years now, which is a long time considering how young Kimmy is and how young I am! I will not let anyone touch my hair. I get a cut and partial highlights every 3-4 months. Even though I went to college on the mainland, I risked having my roots grow out a little (or a lot) so that Kimmy could do my hair when I came for breaks. When I first started going to Kimmy back when she was at the Aveda Salon in Ala Moana, my hair was very blah. I didn't color it and never asked for anything particularly interesting regarding the cut itself. I quickly became comfortable with Kimmy as a stylist and trusted her to make recommendations anytime I was in the mood for a change. I'm someone who gets bored of my current hairstyle pretty quickly but can't really think of how I'd like to change it. Kimmy will usually get a general sense of what I want first, then make 2 or 3 concrete recommendations for me to choose from. If I'm thinking of a style or color that just won't work for my hair type (coarse Asian hair and lots of it), she lets me know in an honest and helpful way. She is very personable and has a "cool big sister" vibe. I had gone to 3-4 other stylists at the Aveda Salon before settling on Kimmy.
