After a really traumatic salon experience where over 14 inches of my hair were cut off when I only asked for a trim and my color turned out chunky and brassy, I was honestly nervous to trust anyone with my hair again. From the very first message, Lauren at Darlwas responsive, empathetic, and incredibly kind. She truly listened to what happened and what I was hoping to achieve. When I arrived, she was welcoming, professional, and explained everything in a way that made me feel comfortable and informed. She performed a full color correction and completely transformed my hair. My previous layers were choppy and uneven, about six inches apart, and she beautifully blended everything so it looked soft and seamless. She did a root melt, corrected the harsh highlights, gave me a gorgeous blowout, and styled my hair to perfection. And she did all of this while pregnant. Truly amazing. Hair is very important to me culturally and personally, and I was devastated after my first experience. When I left Lauren's chair, I felt beautiful again. Leslie at the Sustainery ruined my hair. I paid $300 (which was discounted from $450...) for color that washed out an hour after I got home from my appointment.... $300 for color that washed out the same day. I was refused any sort of refund from her because "she needed to protect her time." What about the clients time? Or your service quality? I have worked in a salon before and this service is beyond unacceptable. I left the salon in tears because of how genuinely disappointed I was and how awful I felt I looked. I communicated all of this with her and she laughed in my face. I wanted to handle this as respectful and professional as possible but after being left on read multiple times and denied any sort of refund - despite countless stylists telling me that's the least she could do, I have decided to publicly post this so hopefully no one else has this experience. I added inspo pics that I showed her and my hair the same day.... It looks like I put Kool-Aid on my hair myself that's faded. All she offered was to tone my hair for free but that couldn't fix anything since all the color is gone. It's honestly just funny at this point. Don't go to her if you don't want to waste your money, I was happier with my hair before I entered the salon. Let me know if you think $450 is a fair price for the results of my hair. read more

Tucked in the heart of Manoa Marketplace on the second floor in the back of Safeway, this great location is the best! Lol! I recommended her so much now I gotta find some time for me... My sister is a regular and so are my sons since when they were little boys. Her specialties are cut, color and BEAUTIFUL up dos! See pics! You can appreciate her wonderful shampoos that is so relaxing and refreshing. She recommended so many great products like my favorite shampoo and the best hair conditioner from Italy for my hair that now it's grown back healthy because of all of my health issues especially Sjogren's. I just needed a good trim and some layers before my trip this week. Cari Ann, did a very fast & efficient doing with my hair. She asked me how short I wanted to cut it and she really did trim that amount, she knew I wanted to still keep it long. We also did layers to make my hair feel lighter since I have thicker hair. She only had cut my hair, but her customer service was so great that I'll be going back to refresh my balayage with her. Being in her salon chair was a 10/10 experience I recommend you go to her & get any of your hair style needs met with Cari Ann! The Sustainery is a beautiful & very clean Salon. All the other Stylist are friendly and make you feel very welcomed. As for furnishing, It has such a modern minimalistic esthetic which is so pleasing. Their salon is conveniently located in Mānoa Marketplace where they also have McDonalds, Safeway, Longs & USPS to name a few. There is always parking never a hassle to find since most people are in & out of the marketplace. If having a hard time finding their salon they are upstairs directly above Mānoa Sushi & Brug Bakery. I was one of those people who had a quarantine breakdown and somehow convinced myself it would be an amazing idea to chop my own hair really, really short. I felt like Britney circa 2007 so maybe it was a good thing that quarantine forced me to stay indoors. So you could say I've been needing a professional haircut appointment pretty urgently. Anywho, both my mom and I have been going to Jayna for YEARS now. And we have no reason to ever stray away. She absolutely knows what she's doing and I only trust her with my hair needs. Also, she knows exactly how to cut my thick asian hair to look effortlessly breezy! I just asked for a trim and some layers with face-framing pieces. She is precise and is great at what she does. Not to mention that she's so chill and super down to earth! The Sustainery itself is modern and beautifully decorated. Love the finishes and details that make me feel extra relaxed during my appointment. They are also taking all the extra precautions with COVID so I felt very safe during my appointment. I don't know what took me so long to write this review (4 months!) but here I am finally doing it! I had been looking to get my hair balayaged for some time now and while browsing Yelp I came across Sustainery Hair Studio and felt like it was the perfect match! I had actually messaged them through Yelp and Anjalee got back to me within a few minutes! From here I was able to make an appointment for a few weeks in advance as she said they fill up pretty quickly on the weekends. She also asked me to send a photo of my hair as well as a photo that I'd like my hair to look like. I was able to get a quote as well which I really appreciated! They are nestled up on the second floor of Manoa shopping center so there is a ton of free parking. Upon arrival, Anjalee was super sweet and made me feel really comfortable. The vibe of the place is awesome, they were playing the perfect chill and cozy playlist (ie. Adele, Sam Smith and vintage Maroon 5!!!) and the interior is crisp, new and fun! I absolutely love the mural they have, the perfect place to take before and after pics! The whole session took about 4 hours and Anjalee was great about explaining each step. She also gave me tips on how to care for my new hair and what kind of products I should be using. Heck, I liked it so much I came back 3 months later for a toner refresh and to go a bit lighter for the summer. Wow. I am so impressed with this hair studio. They are not just a hair studio but a hair studio who is conscious about sustainability. Such as in the hair products they use and how they give away the leftover hair they collected to a green company that upcycles the hair and makes use of it instead of throwing it away! I got my haircut at The Sustainery a couple of months ago and had a decent experience... the cut was OK, but nothing to write home about, especially for the price. My stylist was very nice so I decided to go back for another appointment and just mention a few changes I would like her to make. After texting my stylist several times over the last few weeks and making no progress, I decided to just call the salon and schedule with a different stylist. I was unfortunately unable to get an appointment anytime soon for a Saturday afternoon (I get it, hair stylists are busy post shutdown), so I asked if the rate would be the same for a cut without a style to see if I wanted to schedule for another day. I am an athlete, and it is such a waste for me to have my hair styled right before I go to the gym and sweat for several hours, which is why I prefer to schedule my haircuts for Saturday afternoons so that I can come post training. I had been texting with the salon and as soon as I asked this question, the person on the other end just stopped responding. I feel like this salon just does not value its customers, so I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more
