The lettuce had been chopped into tiny pieces, was wilted and unreconizable. My best guess, it was iceburg and the dressing out of a bottle. When I expressed my discontent (which I admit could have been a little kinder), was attacted by a waitress from across the dining room. "HE CAME IN HERE ANGRY. I was disappointed in the dish that was served to my granddaughter. We ordered buttered noodles, the type of pasta was ronzoni with 2 pats of butter and we were charged $18, which is astronomical. Started coming here in the early 1980's with my parents. They used to go at least once a week, and continued into the 1990's until my Mom passed away and my Dad moved to Florida. Every time he would come to NJ to visit, we would go at least once for dinner. We haven't been here for a couple of years as we don't live as close as we used to. Well, shame on us, because the food is just as delicious as it was 40 plus years ago. This is home cooked Italian food, cooked to order by the owner, Santo, and usually served by one of his sisters. There is just nowhere that I have ever had food like this since my Mother passed away. Fish Salad is an amazing appetizer. My wife had the Shrimp Parmigiana, and I had my old favorite, Shrimp Mediterraneo. We will definitely be returning on a weekly basis. DO NOT miss this place. read more

I ordered sole for dinner to go, along with baked ziti with sausage. The girl who answered said they did not have sole, but they had salmon. I ordered it, and a Caesar Salad with dressing on the side. When I called at 5 and she said it would be ready in 1/2 hour and my partner got there at 5:30. After waiting for some obvious problem, the girl finally said that they didn't have salmon, but she never called to let us know, even though they asked for my name and phone number when I called to place the order. She then said that they do have the sole, which I originally ordered. My partner then waited for 25 minutes for the order to be placed correctly, and made. A great home-style Italian joint in an obscure location. We had the eggplant parm and linguini with white clam sauce. The pasta was cooked exactly to our liking, more on the al dente side. Service was abrupt and a little brusque, but still warm and appreciative that we came to try them out after we told them that it was our first time there. This was my first visit to Enza's. It was a Tuesday at 1:00pm for lunch. It was a shaky start as I found the door locked, again. I was here on a previous Saturday but the Yelp information on the hours was wrong. Yelp has since refused to update the data even after submission so note that the place opens at 1pm on the weekends. This time, I went around the back and was lucky enough to run into the owner who said he forgot to unlock the door. Obviously. I was the only customer there. I ordered the homemade lasagna. I was given some bread that was burnt and crumbled with every touch. Thank goodness the lasagna was nothing like the bread. It was cheesy and delightful. I'm actually flabbergasted that Enza's has a single bad review, as it's both incredible and exactly the kind of place that yelp-ers tend to love. When I lived in New Jersey, Enza's was the go-to restaurant to which I'd bring any out-of-town friends in search of authentic Italian food. It's run by a single family, in what I assume is their home. Perhaps this is where other reviewers ran into trouble -- by misunderstanding the goal and vibe of the place. This is the definition down-home Italian: literally in their own home, where two adorable older sisters are the waitresses and Enza is the talented cook. In the Italian style, the family is straight-up with you, but this should not be mistaken as rudeness. (Have you ever seen the Sopranos?? It's the Italian way!!) While there are certainly some regulars, the waitstaff is experienced and attentive to all the patrons -- I've had as great an experience every single time I've been to Enza's. And the food is to die for. I've never had better Calamari in my life -- it's crispy, warm and delicious while managing to be light at the same time. The broccoli raabe is similar: incredibly flavorful and perfectly seasoned. I've had numerous pasta dishes, but keep returning to the Baked Ziti because of the copious amounts of cheese and wonderful goodness. All the meat dishes are also fabulous, especially the Veal. Literally the only thing I'd stay away is the scungili, unless you're a true, die-hard Italian -- it's a traditional fish that's naturally pretty tough. Enza's has a full Italian dessert menu, with cannoli and tartufo that anybody would be insane not to enjoy. As even further proof of Enza's quality and authenticity, my family took foodie friends who hail from Italy out to dinner here, and even they loved it. Came here actually in the Early 1980's as a kid with my family and tried lots of great Italian dishes for the first time here such as Tortellini En Brodo. My mom is not the best cook so unless my dad was doing the cooking dinner meals were boring. Anyways, great memories of how it used to be back then with things not matching from table to table, but limo's pulling up from NYC because the food was so good. Was so psyched to bring my family here and find out it still exists. Everyone liked their food but I think the atmosphere is lacking especially for the high end prices with Pizzeria vibe. Nice people though and glad the family still keeps it going. Back in the 1980's it was like a best kept secret "hole in the wall" place u had to be told about. Now I think it may have went overboard. OMG, Enza's was the first restaurant I tried when I moved to Hawthorne LAST YEAR...Why have I not been back!?!??! My bf wanted pizza the other day so we came here. We ordered a half pepperoni, half plain pizza to go. They were out of pepperonis so we just went with the plain. It was AMAZING. Seriously. It tasted like my favorite pizza from when I was in 1st grade. I haven't had a simple plain pizza I enjoyed so much since I was that little! My uncle lived in Northern New Jersey, about 6 or 7 miles from this restaurant, and every time I went to visit him, the feeling was unanimous: "Let's go to Enza's." Most of the times I've been here, there's a line to get in, though it moves quickly. This is a restaurant and food one typically finds in a no-frills North Jersey Italian neighborhood. Don't go expecting syrupy sweet service. It's more Jersey: "What are you havin', hon?" or some similar greeting. Both of us had the tortellini in an Alfredo-type sauce every time. It was abundant and delicious. It ain't fine dining, but they put together an authentic and substantial Italian meal for you. After going here for about 30 years, the food (and the waitresses) are the same. That is a good thing. If you love classic NJ southern Italian family style food, this is as good as it gets. Red sauce is available from sweet to medium to spicy- I love the light sweet sauce. The scungilli (conch) salad is fresh, the fried calamari is a very light batter and delightful. Spaghetti is thin and al dente. We had the shrimp and clam spaghetti and the chicken special (pan skillet fried chicken cutlet with mozzarella, eggplant and ricotta) which was perfectly prepared. The Cannolis are freshly filled before served- as they should be. I would never change a thing. My quibbles are grated Parmesan in a jar and they use iceberg lettuce but I have always loved the service that does not allow you to send back uneaten food! read more
