I had a reservation here to meet 4 of my friends for dinner and on the day of they sent me a text asking me to cancel the reservation in Resy because something was broken in the restaurant and the kitchen was closed. My wife called an hour later and they were taking reservations, just not for our time slot. The Resy app showed they were still taking late night reservations, just not during the hour we had reserved. We clearly got bumped for some of the restaurant's friends. It's a little expensive for what it is, but what place isn't in NYC? You can make reservations ahead of time on Resy, so I would recommend doing that, but going there on a weeknight, I think you could probably walk in just fine. Previously, had a nice pasta for lunch so booked a reservation for dinner. Arrived on time for a 7 pm reservation. Only about 15% of tables had guests. Hostess said that all tables except one in the far back or another under a blaring speaker were reserved. I said that we too have a reservation. We asked if the music could be turned down, but she wasn't willing to be accommodating. So, we left. We dine out several nights every week, but won't patronize a restaurant where they don't know how to treat their guests. I have owned 2 restaurants. Emporio In a similar vein, the background on this restaurant is more of a Sardinian Italian , more fish, and hardier offerings I start it was a tuna tartare which literally melted my mouth it was so delicious. I followed up with a hanger steak which I wish I had ordered a little bit more cooked than medium rare because although the flavor was incredible I would've liked it just a tad more this is more rare than med tare. It was accompanied by the most delicious cubes of roasted potatoes. My friend had an order of cacio Pepe. Which looked amazing which he seemed to enjoy very much The interior is actually a bit dark and gloomy, might be a good winter spot as it seems somewhat cozy will likely go back again try some of her other dishes. I have never been more outraged by a restaurant's service than by Epistrophy. I actually took a few weeks to cool off and reflect before writing this review because I was so angry about the way they treated us. I went to visit the Big Apple and catch up with some old friends for a weekend. I went downtown with one of them for lunch and unfortunately wandered into Epistrophy. Brunch time was crowded but we managed to get seats outside. They sat us at a dirty table but it didn't bother me to begin with. We ordered some drinks. I got the fresh vegetable juice and she got a glass of rosé. My juice tasted really healthy and rich with earthy nutrients. The drinks were good but that's where it ends. I ordered tuna tartare and the woman I was with ordered some kind of pasta dish. They took forever to bring out our food. That puzzled me because tuna tartare doesn't need to be cooked. When they brought out the food a lifetime later they brought my friend the wrong dish. They brought it to a different table leaving the two of us alone with my food. Here's the outrageous part: A minute later they came back and took my food from me and put it on someone else's table before bringing it back inside for like two seconds to give the appearance of freshness. EWWW! The portions were very small and the service to get our check was so bad that we immediately went to another restaurant after leaving. Food was really tasty, the omelette was solid and the Pane Frattau was a real winner and I would come back for it. The Serbian Sling drink was excellent. The hostess here was really rude when we were there. When we sat down, she told us she needed the table in an hour. Close to an hour later, our food hadn't even come out when she came back and told us we needed to leave. Our waiter explained to her that our food was still taking time so we were allowed to stay and finish our meal. I contacted Luca and Carlo in April for a grad dinner for 12. The set menu was a great price. We had a true family meal. The beet and burrata was fresh and sweet. Endives with sautéed calamari and mushrooms was just delicious. Hard to get mushrooms and squid timed and balanced so well. I learned Carlo is from Sardegna after the antipasto plate with pecorino and super thin flatbread. They have really classic and top notch Italian dishes and do them very well. It seems as though the service is a recurring issue here, which is why I was hesitant at making the trip but I thought "how bad could it be?" It turns out our waiter was fairly unresponsive and only checked up on us once after he had brought us our meals. It was a Tuesday afternoon and we were among two other parties, so there was no excuse for him to have not given us the proper time of his day. The chicken cutlet itself was thin, crispy and delicious, but could have used a sauce. The salad was slightly wilted, and tasted a little funny so I didn't finish the entire thing. The decor is perfect--funky table settings, sofas, mismatched chairs, etc--though like I said, it's tight. Not clear how the cooks have enough space to actually cook. Food is great. I came in here for dinner last Friday with 3 friends and I really enjoyed our meal. The space is very cozy and I thought the service was excellent. To start, we ordered the burrata, tuna tartare, meatballs and the small cheese board. All of the starters were great-- I may skip out of the cheese board next time though. The meatballs were small, but come in this delicious sauce-- keep around for the bread. For the entrees, I got the gnocchi, which was very good. I tried the skirt steak and the ravioli-- the skirt steak was tasty and I enjoyed the ravioli as well-- however, the ravioli does have a very strong artichoke taste. We also split the cacio e pepe for the table, which was great- pasta was very fresh. Overall, I really enjoyed the meal and would come back again. We took a little time to order drinks. Once we got our drinks, it took him 15 minutes to even come by and ask us if we're ready to order food. It took another 10 minutes for us to get bread on the table. The food came out at a reasonable time, but the waiter was just really bad. The place wasn't even packed or super busy. My friends seemed to enjoy their food, but I thought mine was just whatever (Poached Eggs with Creamy Polenta). I also ordered a side of Russian Fingerling Potatoes with garlic and parmiagiano cheese. It was sooooooo bland. I could not taste the garlic or cheese at all. Clebrated a big b-day last night and am pleased to report Epistriphy was up to the task. Svc was great, vibe very cool, athough the noise level made it hard to hear Nancy Sinatra and the food was just what I needed on a frigid January night. The $47 bottle of Avelo de Nero didnt hurt either. Our family shared tuna tartar and squid appies and found them to be beautifully presented, fresh and very tasty. The olive oil on the table, if representative of what was used in the kitchen added greatly to the meal's success. My wife had the pepper crusted tuna, which was done perfectley and was like buttah. Two orders of the short ribs were served on polenta, which could have come out of the kitchen hotter, but was tender, delicious in the wine redction sauce and complemeted nicely with creamy polenta. And my future son-in-law had the paprdelle with meat suace; he probably couldve stood a bigger portion and thought the pasta not al dente enough, but that mightve been the nature of the fresh pasta, not dried pasta one is normally accustomed. No dessert for us, as we had b-day cupcakes waiting. Got b-day wishes from the server and a nice, homey feel from this quaint italiain restatrauarnt. i hope to come back to try some pasta myself next time and a salad. read more

You can choose outdoor seating along Mott Street or sit inside surrounded by brick walls and shelves filled with antiques, books and bottles of wine. My fellow friend and yelper and I chose to sit inside as the outdoor seats were filled. We started with the special appetizer of the day: seared squid calamari with mushrooms in herbs and oil. It was just ok for me - it could have used more flavor. She ordered the spicy pasta and I ordered the free range chicken, which I thought was just right. The chicken was stuffed with brussels sprouts and wrapped in prosciutto atop mashed potatoes and asparagus. The chicken was a little dry with the prosciutto outside but the flavor was really great with the brussel sprouts inside. I ate it with a glass of Riesling on the side, which completed my meal. Some people will get mad when they read this, but I just going to say it: I'm not a fan of Manhattan's Little Italy. I can't stand how Mulberry Street is full of these super touristy restaurants that have hosts who act like hawkers: "care for some dinner this evening? We're having an all-you-can-eat pasta night"; "Would you like to sit down for some lunch, pretty lady?"; "a glass of wine to relax, miss?" Um... If I really wanted to patronize your business, I would come in myself. You don't have to walk out onto the street and try to pull me in -- leave me alone! With that said, Epistrophy is a few blocks away from this insanity that is on Mulberry, and it's a welcome little wine bar, a nice respite, and less traveled. The selection of wines that they have is relatively diverse, the ambiance is very cute (brick walls, comfy couches and benches, outdoor seating), and the service is decent -- no one hawking at you here. It's really a perfect place to share a carafe of wine and hang out with friends on a warm summer night. They also have sandwiches, little plates, and desserts here, too, if you'd like something with your wine. Scenery across the street (lots of graffiti!) is not that quaint, so try to look inward instead of outward when patronizing Epistrophy. read more

Plenty of seating at the bar with a nice breeze from the open windows/door. Quickly was able to order a glass of Montepulciano ($8) and Insalada di Fregola ($12). The free bread while I waited was warm and delicious. Wine amount was okay. Some places give you more, others less. After 10min got my salad, but it was the chicken salad instead of the tuna. I didn't necessarily have time to wait for the correct meal to be made so I went with it. Meal was okay, nothing memorable. Decent enough place, but seems the music was too loud for a wine bar.
