I visited Schats on a solo road trip up the 395 to celebrate my birthday. I had heard much about this famous bakery, from its sheepherder sandwiches to the pull apart sweet breads, this bakery certainly did not disappoint. Food: When you first walk in, the impression you get with Schats is "Wow". And wowed you shall be because the whole store is absolutely stacked with breads, cookies, savory loaves, twists, cakes, pastries, and baked goods of all shapes, sizes, and flavorful persuasion. I came in prepared however, determined to try a half order each if their beef and turkey sandwiches, and decided to treat myself to some of the sweet baked goods from their extensive sweets section. While I was disappointed by the amount of meat on my sandwiches, I marveled at the flavor and textural cohesion unified in the simple sandwiches. What looks like a basic veggie-mayo-meat quickly becomes a homey culinary experience with the light and fluffy yet hearty sheepherder bread. Where you might expect an overwhelming mouthful of veg (thanks to the substantial sprouts), I'm met with a cohesive bite of delicate fresh flavors that meld together in a delightful sandwich. Safe to say, this is a sandwich sandwich. Not something stacked between bread, but a thoughtful creation that is greater than the sum of its parts. A true sandwich. The complimentary pickle spears and cookie that comes with your sandwich order is a perfect pairing, and I'd highly recommend these sandwiches if youve never tried them! I also got the Apple fritter, grandma cinnamon roll, old fashioned bar, and the apple strudel thing for my desserts to try (not at once). Each had a lovely texture. I disapprove of donuts that don't retain their moisture and texture, but Schats delivers on both marks especially for their old fashioned and Apple fritter donuts which retain a moist fluffy interior with the right amount of crisp. They are also not too heavy, a high mark in my book. The cinnamon roll was delightful with just the right amount of cinnamon and walnuts, the apple strudel thing was mildly disappointing however as the dough was overly dense and difficult to cut/bite into without squeezing out all the filling. Service: Schats staff are friendly, but this is an in and out institution. With the reputation it has, it's no surprise that things are structured to move quickly as there are a constant stream of customers flowing. Even so, staff are happy to answer questions and chat if they have a moment! They made me feel welcome despite being a clear tourist. Ambiance: Schats has a lovely charm to the interior and exterior. It is reminiscent of what I imagine a rustic German/european bakery would look and feel like, and dining at the outdoor seating or perusing the bakeries stacked displays and carts is a wonderfully charming experience. Highly recommend for a fun and lighthearted break that foodies, families, friends will love. Especially as you travel the 395! Overall 5/5 a perfect experience to add onto your 395 itinerary. Definitely do not miss the baked goodies and bread :)

Excellent bread and pastry selection. Everything looked gorgeous, a the free samples were appreciated. The bakery section is definitely wayyyyy better than the lunch options. Turkey pot pie was mid, do not recommend. The indoor seating option doesn't have AC, so be ready to sweat it out during your snack/lunch.

The bakery of note to stop along the 395 route to Northern Cali. Why? Because it's got some really good stuff, that's why. Things to buy here for sure while you're there: - Pull Apart Bread - 8/10: different variations, but all sweet, gooey, decadent. It's like the traditional cinnamon roll's raunchy cousin. - Pastrami sandwich - 10/10: good lord this is delicious. Easily top 5 sandwiches I've ever had. Hefty and filling for sure. The meat isn't your run-of-the-mill, dry, salty pastrami that you'll get at your local deli. They use premium naval cuts that are lightly seasoned, juicy, fatty, and super tender. The Swiss is also soft and spongy, very similar to mozzarella. You'd be satisfied just eating this by itself. And the rye bread is artisinal elite level, as expected. Freshly baked and super soft. So damn good I nearly SCHAT my pants!! - Original Sheepherder Bread - 8.5/10: 100-plus year-old recipe. Tried and true. Great for sandwiches or even just toasted with whatever spread that floats your boat. Versatile and superb. Another thing to note: this place is fully staffed and they have their stuff together. So ordering and getting your stuff goes pretty fast even with the long lines. Super efficient, friendly staff and establishment. A great time was had by all.

Original Garlic Cheese Bread (a 7 out of 10) - we ate it once we reached Mono Lake

On our way from Orange County to Mono Lake and Lake Tahoe, we stopped at Erick Schat's Bakkery as Yelp rated it highly. The building with its blue awnings and decor is charming, but the baked goods (loaf cakes, monkey bread, cookies, etc) didn't look appetizing. The majority of the baked goods looked sloppy, oily and unremarkable. The cookies looked dry. The sandwiches didn't look appetizing. There's a refrigerator that has the same sandwiches (boxed and made that day) that you can grab and pay for immediately in lieu of standing in a long line just to order and watch staff put the same kinds of sandwiches together. We got a few items to go (strawberry éclaire, carrot cake and cheese bread) and ate at the BBQ place across the street.

This place is so cool. They have so Many different breads and pastries. Coffee and sandwich. So much more. So fun to walk through and I tried their bread samples of olive, shepherd, and bacon. Such a fun experience. Please come and create your own experience.

This place is very popular so we thought to give it a try since we were driving through the area. It was Sunday and it was packed! There was a huge line everywhere and when we got in it was hard to move around. Service was fast though for the amount of customers. They have a lot of options for breads, donuts, and desserts. The bacon cheese breadsticks were delicious. Prices are on the high end and parking is tricky too.

We were on the way back from Mammoth Mountain and this place is a must stop for those who love fresh baked goods! As soon as you walk into the store, you feel a sense of pleasantry. The store's aroma of all the fresh breads and pastries were like a dream. There were lots of people in there even near closing time. There are aisles filled with breads, cakes, cookies, candies, etc. There are even sandwiches but we went a little too late that the sandwich bar was closed. You walk around and grab what you want before getting in line to pay. There are two or three pay areas - they accept Tap to Pay! So many pastries to choose from - I got several breads (I was even able to try some) and a few cakes.

Great spot in the middle of town. Enjoy a fresh sandwich people watching as this is on Main Street, right across from the park. Rows and rows of fresh baked goods. Order at the counter and take your goodies . Plenty of sweet treats, breads, and other delights to choose from. The breads are so fresh! Loved their roast beef sandwich and Mac salad! Whole sandwiches are big enough to share. The place can get a bit crowded just be patient , the lines move quickly. Try the honey sticks! Great little power food snack!

Worth the 5 hour drive! I first visited Erick Schat's over 20 years ago when I had moved to Nevada and would drive up the 395 from San Diego. It was a great spot to stop and grab snacks. My sister and I did a small road trip with my son and we wanted to bring him to this bakery. It holds memories for us and we wanted to share those memories with him. The bakery is the same as I remembered. The bread is made fresh and is amazing. I love that they offer samples so you can try different breads throughout the bakery. The cheese bread and the sheepherder's are staples and absolutely fantastic. My new favorite was the cranberry white chocolate. OMG, this bread is heavenly! Make sure you pick up a loaf, it's great with just butter. My son fell in love with the chocolate chip loaf cake, he finished the entire loaf and asked me the next weekend to drive back up to Bishop to get more of the cake. It really was that good. All of the items are wonderful and the staff are great and friendly. This is bakery should be on anyone's list of stops to make when going up or down 395.

Ask the Community - Erick Schat's Bakkery

    Where is Oversized parking?

Depends on how long. RV area next door. Or Bbq/ Carl's Jr across street have big lots

Do you ship out loafs of sourdough bread??? Thanks?

Yes! You can send an email to info@schatsbakery.com

Is the pot pie dry or is the gravy to filling ratio good? Some of the pictures look good, some appear to leave a bit to be desired.

Does anything ever really have enough gravy ? I definitely wouldn’t say it’s dry and sure it could use more but I was very satisfied. I will get it again as it is. Pretty…

Are dogs allowed in outdoor seating area?

    Yes. Very dog friendly town

Can I order bread to be shipped to Los Angeles?

Yes! You can send an email to info@schatsbakery.com

While I doubt that they could post and keep all of their offerings current on their web site, I would like to know what the costs of their bread and pastries are and what is involved in shipping them to me?

You can send an email to info@schatsbakery.com and send your information to them. They can provide exact shipping cost.

Can I order some cookies and ship to Orange County?

Website is not working. How can I order stuffs ? I live in Riverside County. Just call, order & pay shipping fee?

That's what I did. Love the raisin cinnamon bread and the sourdough.

Can I order a specialized cake and cupcakes?

    https://schatsbakery.com/

What are the sandwich bar hours?

I think the sandwich bar closes around 3:00? But I'm not 100% sure

    Do they have keto pastries?

Highly doubt it - they're very old school. Pretty sure there are no vegan, gluten free or keto ops in the bakery dept.

Can you freeze the chili cheese bread? How long is it good in the freezer?

Yes! We froze it and it lasted for 5 months. Pop it in the oven and it's like new!

When you order delivery, what does the packaging look like? Is there a difference when it's a gift?

When we ordered delivery from Schat's it came in a plain brown box. I doubt they do anything if it is a gift.

Do they ship their beef jerky?

    They do shipping

Do they have gluten free breads, rolls or muffins?

NO! I don't know what the confusion is here from other reviewers. I was just there and asked several employees. There is no gluten free bread available and no gluten free options at the deli counter. I asked for a lettuce wrap and they wouldn't do…

Do they mail/ship their famous bread?

Yes! They have a mail order form on their web site. Scroll down, and there is a button above…

Did this place used to be called Bedwell's Bakery?

    I don't know.

Do they have gluten free options?

    No they do not

How much butter is used in a day?

15-30 lbs per day depends on whether or not it's a weekday or weekend, and or holiday.

Do they sell cupcakes? And if the answer is yes, anyone know if they do bulk orders, of like 100 or so?…

You could call Schat's and ask (760) 873-7156

Now, we know why! Everything we ordered was made soooo bad. And, it took soooo long. My power wrap had so much spinach in it, and barely any of the other veggies. Also, the hummus was a thin layer of (picture a thin layer of mustard amount) and not a nice remotely visible or generous layer of hummus! My husband's veggie sandwich was also all spinach, with one thin slice of red onion, and one teaspoon of avocado slice. Pathetic. I wish I was kidding. Our smoothies were full of the frozen fruit, and sparing on the good ingredients (dates, chia, hemp). Basically, they are overloading on the cheaper bulk items, and stingy on the good ingredients. We spent $50 and tipped 20% ...on awful food. The young woman working clearly lacked any care for her job. Sadly, though, the last time I came here I had a different employee but same results. Suffice to say we will not be back again.
