I was referred by my general dentist to get gum grafting done as I have moderate recession with my gums. I spent a lot of time looking around for the best office for me and decided on this practice. My periodontist here is Dr. Chan, and he is the most kind and thorough periodontist. He answered all my questions and concerns during my consult, and even took the time to write me an email answering further questions that I had after my consult. I would also like to thank the care coordinator, George, and the receptionists, as well as the techs and hygienists for being so friendly and making me comfortable. I am fairly young in my age so the idea of getting multiple gum grafts was very scary to me but everyone was so nice and reassuring. My gum graft procedure day was very smooth and my recovery pain only lasted the first 3 days. I had a follow up appointment with Dr. Chan today and it was so relieving to hear that everything is healing well and the grafts took. I'm looking forward to my next 6 week post-procedure appointment and plan to do my other gum graft sites at this practice as well. Thank you to Dr. Chan and this office! read more

I generally avoid leaving negative reviews for local businesses, but I felt a responsibility to share my experience so others can make informed decisions. While Dr. Low may be a skilled periodontist, I will not be returning to this practice for several reasons. First, the billing department's timing cost me financially. I had an expensive deep cleaning done at the end of the year and repeatedly asked to pay before December 31st so I could utilize my remaining FSA funds. They insisted they would mail the bill, but didn't send it until the following year. Because of this delay, I lost my previous year's FSA funds and was forced to pay out-of-pocket the next year when my new FSA cap was exceeded. Second, this is minor, and kinda funny. The front desk vibe is a bit much. The young staff wears heavy makeup and super thick, caterpillar-like fake eyelashes, and they match that dolled up look with a snob attitude. They talk down to you, lack basic conversation skills, and just mindlessly repeat "no worries" to almost anything you say. The main reason I am not returning, however, is a complete loss of TRUST. I spent $500+ for consult and xrays at this office just so Dr. E. Low (younger guy) can tell me that I need a highly invasive, expensive oral surgery. Then, I was immediately ushered to a finance coordinator to sign consent and put money down. It felt excessive (GREED) and extreme, I sought a second and third opinion, both of which confirmed that a far less invasive, or even over-the-counter, treatment should be tried first. By the way, 1.5 years later, my gum situation have improved with the less invasive and over-the-counter solutions recommended. read more

Dr. Erik Low will go over treatment plan at the beginning of each year and I get to decide when I'm ready for the procedure. He listened to my concerns and offered alternative options. Dr Erik Low is great. This review is 2 years overdue! He did a bone grafting on one of my wisdom teeth socket where I had excessive bone loss and developed a deep pocket. He was realistic and provided me with assurances of what improvement I could expect. The bone graft surgery procedure was painless and relaxing. I'm a very nervous patient but his assurances calmed me down quite a bit. And I didn't have any intolerable pain after the surgery and I've a very low pain threshold. It was very inconvenient because of food restrictions but I found him to be very meticulous and methodical. He understands the fundamentals well and is a good communicator. I consulted 2 periodontists before and none of them were as convincing or as methodical as Dr Low. 2 years down the road, most of my bone have grown back. My pocket went from 10 mm to 4/5 mm- Dr low mentioned even before the surgery that that's the best I could hope for. I'll need regular deep cleaning but at least the bone loss has stopped. Highly recommend him for your perio needs. This practice is expensive compared to a lot of nearby ones but I feel you get what you pay for. Dental health is a serious business and if you can afford it, better to go with a top notch doctor than a mediocre one even if it costs more. read more

Echo Erin G.'s comment on Yelp. Please read carefully before you come into this office!!! I got tricked by the insurance person Joan Suarez's to pay $375 via credit card at the end. This includes a perio evaluation and two x-rays. Before I came in, I clearly communicated with office via email about any potential payment(also shared my insurance details) and the answer is I don't have to pay anything for consultation. So I went in and sit through everything they asked me to do. and then bummer, there's the $375 bill. They could have asked my permission on charging the evaluation and x-rays, but they never asked any, when I was under the assumption that no payment is required. I also sent them the perio chart and x-ray from other clinics, so apparently I don't need a full evaluation done. but again, no one asked me anything. The only info I got during the whole process is that "no payment is needed" At the end, the Joan person blamed the front desk for everything, and force me to pay out of the credit card machine. It's a shame for a referred clinic to do this. I was going to follow Dr. Low's recommendation on further treatment plan, but this staff is so unprofessional that I decided to stop right here. I went to this office today for a consultation. My experience with Doctor Chan was really great. He did not rush, was very thorough, and explained everything really clearly. He laid out his evaluation, treatment options, and his recommendation well. I felt really comfortable and had already decided to proceed with treatment in my mind until I experienced the front office staff... I am writing this review to help others and also as feedback to the business because the way they handled their misunderstanding of my insurance was unhelpful, pushy, and condescending. I gave two stars due to the doctor only. What happened: I have MetLife dental insurance that can be verified with the insured person's name, date of birth, and employee ID. I have used this information without trouble at other dentists. I provided this information on the registration forms when I arrived. In the middle of the consultation a woman from the front office came and told me a social security number was necessary to verify who the insurance belonged to. I told her that the employee id I had provided on the paperwork was sufficient to identify an individual, it was the only information I needed at my other dentist, and that we were not comfortable sharing a social security number. She assured me my social security number would be secure in the office, said she would go check though, and did not return again during the consult. When I went to the front desk after the consult I was asked again for a social security number. When I repeated that I was uncomfortable sharing a social security number and I had not been required to share it with other dentists using this insurance I was told "they have special software that we do not have". One of the office staff then stated that if I did not give them a social I would be treated as a cash patient. After a few minutes I was called back to a desk, presented with an estimate for services. I was handed a bill for $250 and the lady thrust a credit card machine toward me and asked me to pay when I was ready. I repeated to her that I had insurance and did not intend to pay out of pocket. I was then assured that once I later provided the information they needed to verify my insurance (again, a social security number) that I would be reimbursed by my insurance. I repeated, yet again, that I was not comfortable sharing it and I knew that it was not necessary so they would just have to bill me. At this point the office person declared we were "in a pickle" and, to her credit, finally went into problem solving mode. Unfortunately, this is the part where most of the condescension occurred. I shared with her the dental insurance card, which only had a group # on it, hoping it would help, but she was still focused on the social. She told me that I probably hadn't changed dentists in over 10 years and that was why I had not needed to provide my social security number recently. Nope, I told her I have changed dentists twice in the last 5 years. She assured me that, despite my belief otherwise, my other dentist had my social security number and asked if she could call and get it. Great, I said, please do. With my authorization, she called and my dentist proceeded to provide her with the exact information I had already provided on the registration form - the employee id. She then pulled up an interface on the computer, which I could see, that had an entry field for Social Security # or ID. She entered the employee ID and it worked. Great, PEBKAC solved! Insurance located! However, the office person then proceeded to explain to me that 98% of people are fine with sharing their social security number and that a handful of security-conscious people are like me (WTF?). She surmised that I went through a special process to get a unique ID number to obfuscate the SS# and it had added a layer of complexity and caused confusion. I corrected her immediately and let her know that I had done no such thing, the ID is an employee ID given to every person in the company and it was just the standard way the insurance identifies the insured person. Despite being happy the problem had been solved, I am not happy with the lack of humility or apology for the way I was treated when clearly there was an administrative unfamiliarity with the insurance, a miscommunication, and a lot of assumptions. I apologized on the way out, because I have a hard time with conflict, but I wish I hadn't. I left there reeling from the false statements about "special software" and pretend statistics about individuals' comfort sharing their social security numbers. The characterization of my hesitance to share a social as rare and practically paranoid was also ridiculous. I am glad I pushed back against the aggressive "pay right now" tactics. Otherwise, I likely would have been out of pocket for a consultation my insurance covers. Unfortunately, I won't have the pleasure of working with the wonderful doctor after this experience. read more
