I've had two gum grafts by Dr Chu with sedation of course because I'm a big chicken. I was comfortable before he ever got started. Dr Chu used a combination of oral sedation and intramuscular sedation that was a comfortable cocktail. His team was kind and gentle. I woke up at home feeling minimal discomfort. Short Version- I had a very disappointing experience at this dental office, particularly with the office manager and billing staff member, Esmeralda. The major issue is that the office manager is also responsible for billing, leaving no way to escalate concerns. Additionally, I was not informed that a procedure wouldn't be covered by my insurance, resulting in unexpected charges. The lack of transparency and professionalism, combined with rudeness, makes this office one I cannot recommend. Long Version- The primary concern is that the office manager, Esmeralda, is also in charge of billing. This means that if you have any issues with billing, there's no higher authority to turn to; all complaints go directly back to her, creating a dead-end for any resolution. In my case, I went in for what I thought was a general cleaning, only to find out later that the office had performed a periodontal cleaning, which wasn't covered by my insurance. At no point did they inform me that this procedure would lead to additional costs. This lack of transparency is a violation of California Insurance Code Section 10120.3, which requires that patients be informed of any non-covered services before they're performed. When I tried to address this with Esmeralda, she was extremely rude and dismissive. I even asked her if she was familiar with the law requiring disclosure of non-covered services and estimated costs (California Insurance Code §10120.3). Her response was, "Do you really think i have a book here with all the dental codes and protocols that need to be done in California? " which I found shocking and unprofessional, especially coming from someone in charge of billing and patient communication. To make matters worse, instead of acknowledging the error or working with me to resolve the billing dispute, she threatened to send the bill to collections. I've since confirmed with my insurance company that this procedure would not have been covered, and they agreed that the office should have disclosed that information before performing the service. There is no accountability at this practice, and no willingness to de-escalate or take responsibility when they make a mistake. I've filed a complaint with the Dental Board of California and the Department of Insurance. I also have a recording of my conversation with the billing office, which I'm prepared to submit if needed. read more

I'm VERY glad I was able to have Dr. Chu and his staff do a combined lower gum graft (4 teeth) and pinhole procedure (2 teeth). I put this off for at least 15 years and had a lot of recession to cover. First of all... generally, a gum graft is no joke... They take a hunk of flesh out of your palate and sew it onto a fresh slice made in whatever gum has receded and stitch it all up mightily so it grabs the blood supply and makes a permanent bond. It's not guaranteed, so do everything you can to give it the best chance. You wear a plastic shield over the palate crevasse for days and it's a good two weeks of babying your mouth and eating liquid food, and taking pain meds 24/7, before you really feel more normal. I underestimated how much it would hurt the first 1-2 weeks and advil/tylenol together were barely cutting it. (The "good" meds offered are not an option for me). Then 6 total weeks of being very careful so the graft does not tear away from its new blood supply. It's pretty gnarly no matter who does it -- it is what it is. Dr. Chu and his staff went above and beyond for me. They were very flexible and accommodating in what type of anesthetic and calming meds I preferred for the procedure, and I felt very comfortable with them before, during and afterward. It's obvious that Dr. Chu knows his stuff, and so do his assistants. I had some issues I was concerned about and returned to their office a few times in the first three weeks following the procedure. They got me in quickly every time, were sincerely concerned and assured me everything was healing fine, and I am very happy with the result so far. I greatly appreciated that they invited me to come in for a look rather than just advising me over the phone, and they never made me feel silly for returning a few times. I had consulted a different periodontist in the area before deciding on Dr. Chu. Dr. Chu would to do the graft and pinhole procedures together to address a much bigger area, whereas the other office would not do the pinholes at all. The other office also said they could not get the graft to cover all the exposed tooth roots, but Dr. Chu accomplished most of that, and also filled in gum up in between the teeth enamel that I did not expect! I only have three suggestions for those considering gum graft: I took an antibiotic prescribed by the other periodontist, who had gotten to the point of pre-prescribing things in case I chose him. I took it because I wanted to have no chance of infection having gone through this ordeal. I also would suggest starting a short course of steroids upfront for combined procedures like this, because I had substantial swelling and started steroids days after the procedure, and might have avoided that additional discomfort. Lastly, my plastic palate shield was way too tight on a couple front teeth and caused very painful soreness like new braces right next to the palate hole, which was one of the more painful aspects of this-- I ended up cutting the shield but wish I had done it sooner so heads up on that solution. I am very disappointed and upset with this doctor and his staff. I saw him in May for a consultation and to set a date to have a tooth extracted and a bone grafting done after a trip that I had to take. I had a trip planned to go and see my mother who is ill and in a nursing home. When I came back from my trip, I had to call and reschedule my appointment because I had been exposed to Covid and also had found out that my Vitamin D level was extremely low. I called them on the day of the scheduled surgery and I understood that he was upset about the short notice. I really felt bad about it, but I had just returned the night before and couldn't reach them any earlier to let them know about the exposure and my Vitamin D level. I rescheduled my appointment for July, and then I did come down with Covid for two weeks. I called them well in advance and let them know that I couldn't keep the appointment and wanted to push it back a couple more weeks. I called today to let them know that I no longer have Covid, but I am still congested, coughing a lot from the Covid, and I am suffering from terrible allergies. I wanted to change the surgery date which is next Monday until later in August when I am feeling much better. They were extremely rude for the second time and told me that I had to pay half of what the procedure was going to cost or they wouldn't see me. The first time they were rude was when I called the day of and as I stated before, I understood their feelings. However, I thought that given the Covid exposure, I was doing them a favor by not coming in and potentially spreading it to them. I am very upset because my husband and I have been to this office many times over the years for procedures, and I even had a gum graft done by this doctor a year ago. I thought he was a very nice, competent, caring doctor and that his staff were very pleasant. Boy, was I wrong!!! They are all about the money! read more

** This is not a review for the doctor, but a review for the front desk and assistants ** I made a visit to evaluate treatment which I was recommended to get but went elsewhere after seeing how the front behaved. They made a mistake of charging my old insurance instead of the current and active insurance at the time of my visit. The other insurance was 1-year old and not sure how they found it. When the payment was declined, I received a bill from them in mail. I quickly responded in an email with my current policy number and an explanation of what happened. Did not receive a responce! Then I called after a week and tried to explain what happened and I prefer if they charged the new insurance instead of me paying them. The assistant was rude enough to hang up on me! Have you heard before a doctors office hanging up on patients? They did! Next month, I receive another bill from them. Then I sent them a second email, explaining I was hung up on before and asked them to either bill the active insurance or send me an reimbursement form for the service that I received and I'd be happy to make a payment out of pocket. They didn't respond to my second email either. Then I receive another bill and lastly I had to call them and made a payment with credit card. Dr. Chu and his amazing staff were wonderful from start to finish. We had a very informative initial consultation for our daughter's gum procedure, followed by the procedure on that same appointment. Everything went very smoothly. Dr. Chu called that evening to make sure everything is healing well, which it did. We had 2 follow-up check ups to confirm everything is well. The office did a great job with scheduling appointments at a convenient time, handling insurance matters, and having great COVID-19 procedures. TL;DR: Amazingly friendly, accommodating staff and very clear approach to dentistry with good explanations from Dr. Chu and a personable approach. Minus 1 star for being rather expensive...though honestly periodontology is probably just like that, and for most folks hopefully most procedures will be covered by insurance. More details: Seriously, fantastic staff. Jean at the front desk makes most of my calls and appointments, and she's pleasant, remembers small details about me, and is also very flexible when needed to reschedule or shift things around. Enisa, who manages insurance and payments, is fantastically clear and responsive, helpful, patient, and open. These folks are always ready to answer a question with just a quick phone call, and they use every method known to modern dentistry to remind you of appointments, which I like - get the card, get an email, get a text, and a phone call on top of all of that. Dang! It's an impressively smooth ship over there. Dr. Chu is wonderfully approachable, skilled in his craft, and able to clearly explain options, tradeoffs, and procedures. He may have a small tendency to sell you towards his common procedures just because it's what he does all day - I honestly don't think he's got an evil bone in his body, but the nature of the business is what it is and it can be sometimes useful to advocate for yourself (i.e. "I want to wait a year or two to monitor these gums" or "no, I don't need to be sedated"). Procedures - I've had both the gum graft surgery and the pinhole collagen injection surgery to treat my receded gums, and each time I've been thoroughly impressed - with no more than local anesthetic, there is seriously no pain during the procedures (just the normal discomfort of having a bunch of hands in your mouth). Unless you have especially bad fears or anxieties around dental work, I'd skip the heavier drugs and sedation - local anesthetic is perfectly effective here and you can get yourself home safely after 90 minutes or so. For me, post-op recovery has been (lucky perhaps) smooth sailing (expect lots of swelling and bruising, but that's fine...just make up stories about the other guy). You'll need to follow a delicate regime of soft foods for a few days and avoiding anything which could injure the freshly-worked area, but again, that's just normal for the procedure. Cost - Before insurance covers its part, gum surgeries run in the ballpark of $1200-2000 and cleanings $200-400 depending if it's the deep cleaning or not. Not cheap, but certainly worth it for your mouth health. With these numbers, pay attention to what your insurance does and doesn't cover and when the limits reset. Logistics - Parking is easy enough for bike or car but other transit options are few (rather far from Caltrain and any frequently-served bus lines) and car traffic in the area is pretty congested near rush hour...if you're lucky enough to plan those midday appointments, you'll thank yourself for avoiding the trouble. I went in for an initial consultation for the Lanap procedure. The meeting with Dr. Chu went well and he was helpful and informative. The procedure, in the end, would cost $6000+, not insignificant, but it being what it is. What is not OK with me is on my way out, the person in charge of finance insisted that I pay $146 for the initial consultation. This cost was never mentioned before hand and not charged by others dental offices I consulted recently. Also, she made me sign an acknowledgement of receiving a cost estimate (a common practice), but then she never gave me a copy. For this reason and this reason alone, I will not go back for the procedure. read more

Dr. Chu was awesome. I have horrible teeth and numerous dental issues that I have been avoiding. One week ago I was in the emergency room with an abscessed tooth and had to get to a dentist and get it pulled. I called the office and they got me in ASAP. Dr. Chu was wonderful, and extremely careful and understanding of my anxiety. I told a friend, after my appointment, that I have been embarrassed and terrified to go to the dentist for years. Dr. Chu has restored my faith in dentistry. He was so kind and did such a great job. I am home approximately 12 hours later and I have minimal pain and almost no swelling! As a dental patient, I have certain expectations of dental offices, and Eric Chu failed them all. I'm extremely disappointed. He couldn't even get the basics right. I expect to be treated like a number, and to sit in the waiting room for ages for the doctor to be ready. I expect to be confused by his explanations, and given the run around whenever I try to get some concrete answers. I expect overly aggressive treatment plans that will cost me a fortune. Can you believe the nerve of this office? Friendly staff, no wait time, straightforward explanations with completely reasonable prices and treatment plans?? But that's nothing compared to his epic failure: the procedure itself. I expect the procedures to be horrifying, stressful, and painful. The procedure was practically pleasant! But no, it gets worse. I felt NO PAIN during or after the procedure. Three extractions and a bone graft, and yet the guy is so incompetent that he didn't even know how to send me home in agony. Not even a little discomfort. I mean, who does that? How is that even possible? He obviously did something wrong. To his credit, there was a little bit of pain and swelling the next day, but that's just not good enough! I also demand to be left alone to suffer in silence after a surgery. I mean, it's important to learn independence and autonomy. What are they thinking, calling me, not only once, but twice the next day to check on me, make sure I'm doing okay, and answer any questions I have? That's just rude. I hope he has plenty of malpractice insurance, because this guy is going down. No dental office should ever be allowed to get away with such incompetence. read more

Mountain View Periodontics fleeced me to pay them $500+ for a procedure even though I have insurance. Initially, they advised that my payment would be $187. After the procedure was done, they stuck me with a bill that included $146 for initial consult, and $185 for the actual procedure. Even though they advised that they had worked with my insurance and my payment should be $187 plus perhaps another $50 or $100 at max, I got stuck with a bill of $518 at the end. When my dentist told me I'll lose a tooth due to a fast receding gum which was cut off by another dentist a decade ago, I was worried. The only option, my dentist said was to get a gum graft and referred Dr. Chu for the surgery. Dr. Chu won me over with photographs of the earlier patients who he claimed had perfect gums after the surgery. Everything looked great and he looked confident and competent. I spent upward of $2000 on a very painful procedure that involved him taking a slice of gum from my palate and grafting it on the problem tooth. I had to keep the affected area covered up to give it time to heal and take hold. However, soon after the surgery, Dr. Chu took photographs of my tooth that showed the newly reconstructed gum. However, 3-4 weeks after the surgery was done and before I had fully healed, the graft disappeared! All that pain and expense was for nothing! I was still going to Dr. Chu for inspection and complained that the graft didn't take hold. Instead of suggesting an alternative and helping me, he pulled the photograph he had taken 2-3 days after the surgery to prove that he had done his job! This is FRAUD! The photo was taken at a time when the graft hadn't even taken hold of the tooth! Avoid him if you can. I am sure he is showing the picture of my healed tooth to new patients and we all know that it didn't work. read more
