This place has been a family favorite of my wife's for years, and she introduced me a while back. It's an old school Tex Mex place, so don't expect something fancy and new wave. The menu is chock full of the classics, and rice and beans abound in the dishes. Starting with the requisite chips and salsa, the former are crispy and not too thin, and the latter is a smooth serving, none of those chunks to get in the way. It's also good as a condiment on the food. Drinks are also Tex Mex standards, with sweet margaritas and a good selection of Mexican cervezas. My dish recently, as it frequently is, was the chile relleno with ground beef, and it really delivered. Featuring the classic egg batter and ranchero sauce, it had a good portion of mild ground beef inside, and tasty ranchero up top. Rice and beans were on the side, of course, and were great both at dinner time and for lunch the next day. Valentine's night and we needed dinner, texted the kiddo and we all met at Ernesto's. Earlier dinner so we didn't have the crowd. Seating was a bit of a wait but server arrived quickly. We tried this after having tried almost every Tex-mex place in the area and wish we had tried it sooner - the online menu needs to be updated because they don't have either of the things we have ordered on it - we tried a fried chicken dish covered in queso and what I believe was called the TexMex steak fajitas - similar to the Mi Cocina sunset style with queso and fried onion strings - the free chips and salsa is one of the best I've had - fresh and just spicy enough - hoping to try their chimichangas next time! read more

We came in for lunch and the food was delicious. I we had the lite lunch combo with tortilla soup, sour cream chicken enchilada served with rice and beans and it was amazing, came out fresh and steaming hot. The chips and salsa were perfect! My husband and I went to Ernesto's, and my husband and I loved it. The wait staff is awesome and the restaurant was filled. It was perfect! We had the queso with brisket to start. Food and Drinks are good. Very good service. Last several times I ordered take out, there were no issues and everything was freshly made.

We've been here many times over the years even though it is a fair distance for us to drive. We've always enjoyed it very much. Didn't get a chance this time... we were seated within 15 feet of the bar where 4 servers stood chatting. We waited about 15 minutes and were never acknowledged at all. Would have waited except that another party was seated directly behind us... waiter walked past us to serve them then walked back past us and never acknowledged us at all. That was enough. Usually don't like to write negative reviews but maybe a manager will see this and it won't happen to someone else. Maybe we'll go back... maybe not. I have never been more disgusted with a restaurant doing business during a serious pandemic and not do anything to protect its customers. As soon as we walked in there was a party of at least 20 right there as soon as you walk in. No masks or social distancing. I Immediately walked out but my husband came out and convinced me we would be far enough away from them. I was hesitant but I do like there fajita steak nachos. I walked in with my mask on and hand covering mouth and nose. Luckily we were far enough away from them. I thought we were safe. The answer to that is NO WE WEREN'T! I never thought the employees would not follow safety rules. One employee was mopping the floor without a mask on. 2 employees walked out of the kitchen without masks on and did not put them back on until they walked away from the bar. I was floored and never wanted to run out of a restaurant as fast as I could before. What makes this a sad situation is they have good food and we loved eating there but will never set foot in there again. I have never warned anyone about anything on Yelp as I try to be respectful when giving a review but this situation is serious and I feel it warrants what I've said and what I'm about to say. For your own safety stay away from Ernesto's on Custer in McKinney. I only say this because this is a very serious situation. A sad thing to say when their food is so good. This place never disappoints. I think is as delicious as the over- big name places but with very low prices. The service is always good (I've been to both Frisco locations) and they never make you wait for chips and salsa which that's a plus for me! I've had their steak fajitas for two and the four of us can eat. One time I orders their table side guacamole and it was as good as uncle Julio's or Mi cocina. The difference is UJ and MC charges you around 15$ while in Ernesto's was less than 10$. No, the place is not fancy by any means. They may not have some Uber Crazy drinks but if you just want to have a family meal and not hurt your wallet, this is the place to go! It's not super loud but it can be packed during busy hours. I guess because others think the same as I do. Also there is always parking which I like very much. I've had their tacos and they are very tasty as well and they can modify your meal according to your likes/dislikes. I also love their tortilla soup.
