The queso was you basic run of the mill yellow cheese, velveeta-esk. Guac was good. Refried beans were okay. We enjoyed the chips and salsa. Asked for corn tortillas, got flour, which was fine by us. El Juárez easily earns 5 stars for it's incredible value and tastiness. Set in downtown McKinney, it's in a fun, walkable area with lots of shops, bakeries and other restaurants. You'd be hard-pressed to find a value quite like El Juárez at any restaurant in 2023. The prices here are like something out of a time warp. I ordered the daily special (It was Wednesday, so an enchilada dinner) and it was $6.50!!! Okay, so you may ask yourself- if it's $6.50, it must be mediocre- but it's really anything but. I found my meal to be something I'd easily expect to pay nearly double for. First, the plate and food were very hot- gotta love when the food is absolutely piping hot! I had the enchilada dinner which consists of rice, beans and two enchiladas. First- the beans were incredible! They were not too greasy or salty. The full flavor of the beans really came through. The rice is great too- fluffy and has a mellow, yet slightly garlicky quality to it. The enchiladas were in a delicious chili sauce that wasn't too heavy. Now the cheese was somewhat oily, but I really enjoyed it! Sometimes a good processed cheese is the ultimate guilty pleasure :-P The service is nice and attentive. I had a really pleasant waitress who was very polite and was always around when I needed her. As for the atmosphere itself- think hole in the wall. It reminds me of so many Tex-Mex restaurants I used to frequent as a kid. Nothing fancy, and even a subtle aroma of old-building hangs in the air, but I'm perfectly fine with it. What El Juárez lacks in atmosphere, it makes up with authenticity. It feels like an undisturbed, hidden gem and I hope it stays like this. I ordered it to go and it was all smashed inside the box. Tasted like old ingredients and I couldn't even finish it I was so grossed out. I saw it had 4 stars on google reviews so I decided to give it a try. When I walked in I saw immediate red flags in how dirty and old the inside was. The floors were in very poor condition. We have eaten here a handful of times and it has been very good each time. It has a very "hole in wall" kind of feel to it. The people have been very nice every time we've been here. The food is very authentic and delicious. I usually get the Carne Guisada and it doesn't disappoint. The tortillas are hand made, of course, and they are amazing. It's an older place downtown, but worth the trip. Right now there is a lot of construction on Louisiana St., so be aware. Also, check their hours before you go. They are closed on Mondays. read more

Sunday breakfast/lunch was great. Husband had Menudo which was great. Not greasy at all and great flavor. I had the huevos rancheros with a side of potatoes and mom had a small bowl of chicken caldo. Food was decent, not bad not great. service was very good. The problem is that they will over charge your card vs what is on the menu. For example, 3 chicken tacos on menu $8.50, they will charge $8.84. #3 is $8.95 on menu, they charge $9.31, 3 burritos $7.95 they charge you $8.27, Pollito plate $4.95 they charge $5.15 etc. The number on receipt goes to an invalid number. I recently visited El Juarez with my wife and our friends from out of town and I must say the food and service was nothing less than outstanding! I their salsa! I do however like really hot stuff so I asked if there was anything hotter, a little later here comes one of their friendly staff members with some salsa he whipped up for me in the back and it was even better (like I said I love ) When the evening was over and our friends from out of town drove home my wife and chatted about our evening and both agreed the food was great but the service made the night extra special. The owner walks around with genuine concern to ensure everyone is taken care of and happy. The wait staff to the cooks are all very personable and friendly. Quaint Mexican restaurant in downtown McKinney. I came to try their lunch buffet (Fridays only). There was not a wide array of selections, however it did have the basics: rice, refried beans, beef enchiladas, cheese enchiladas, tamales, flautas and also chilaquiles, fried potatoes, and red chile pork stew. You can order crispy beef tacos from the server as well. It's made to order and included in the buffet. Everything tasted good enough, but nothing blew me away, including the chilaquiles which is a dish I adore. They put shredded chicken in theirs. It was good, just not something I would come back for. The rice was slightly salty. The only thing I didn't try were the beans. They do serve complimentary chips and salsa. I cannot recall a time that I didn't like the salsa at any Mexican or Tex Mex restaurant. I did not enjoy theirs at all. At first I couldn't decide if the sour taste was from the limes that I'm assuming were used or if the salsa had just gone bad. We were visiting from out of town and decided to try this restaurant! So glad that we did! The food was absolutely delicious and the prices were great! My husband ordered the Bistec Ranchero and I got the menudo! The beef was so tender and flavorful and the rice and beans were definitely homemade! Friday Lunch at 12:30PM, 2 people. Fairly empty for lunch. We were the only table in sight. Friday lunch special is a buffet (food looked decent, but we didn't order it). The menus were really dirty, but the water is good and the chips and salsa were above average. Queso is good as well, it was very hot when brought out, but easy to eat; a classic Tex Mex cheese dip. The chicken tortilla soup is brothy and soothing on a chilly day, it had avocado, cilantro, shredded chicken and cheese in a deep bowl of clear chicken broth. I added some of the salsa to it to give it some spice and it was good. It came out super hot, which made it hard to eat at first! The atmosphere is kind of dark, and the dining rooms are divided and a little awkward. We had trouble getting a server to serve us or even check on the table, which is the main reason for the three star review. Came here at 6pm on a Saturday night. There was nobody at the hostess stand and no waiters or any staff of any kind in the dining area. Waited several minutes for someone in the kitchen to notice me and get me a table. There appeared to be two 16-year-old's working as waitresses, but it was as if this restaurant had just opened today and I was their first ever customer. And nobody had any idea how to run a restaurant. Or had ever been to a restaurant to see how it's done. After 10+ minutes and nobody has taken our order, I realized that the waitress doesn't know she's supposed to take our order. I flagged her down the next time she passed and told her that we're ready to order. I asked if the chicken mole is mole poblano and she said she doesn't know and would have to check. Such a strange thing to not know given the limited menu. I ordered the chicken mole with guacamole appetizer and my girlfriend ordered the carne asada and margarita. The margarita was served after around 15 minutes. We both tasted it and it didn't seem to have any alcohol in it. We pointed it out to the waitress and she said something ridiculous like "oh you can't taste the alcohol because it's really smooth" really like a 16 year old drinks lots of margaritas and we don't know what tequila tastes like. After 20 minutes and no food had come out of the kitchen - for anyone (not just us), I flagged down the waitress and asked when our appetizer is coming out. Around 10 minutes later she gives us a single scoop of guacamole served in a tiny dish. It was not enough for 2 people as I had clearly intended it to be. After another 15 minutes, I suggested to the waitress that we would leave if our entrees aren't coming out. She very quickly brought out our entrees. The carne asada isn't sliced meat, it was served as a whole bone-in steak. Very odd. My mole poblano was OK but not the best I've had and not nearly worth the inexplicable 45 minute wait. read more

Went to downtown historic Mckinney square for brunch and the place we planned on going to was closed. Not knowing the area very well, we pulled up YELP and found this place just two streets over and decided to give it a try and I'm so glad we did! This authentic Mexican food restaurant is definitely a diamond in the rough. I had the huevos rancheros and my wife the chorizo con huevos and both couldn't have been better! The chips and queso were both good as well! The best part of all was the price we had all the above and our ticket was 21.00 dollars and I would have happily paid 40.00 for flavor and quantity of food. The only thing I can say negative has nothing to do with the restaurant but the parking was limited to none, we parked about three blocks away and walked to the restaurant, but on the plus side, the walk is on the square & we got to see a lot of cool shops. read more

What a dive! The floors follow the slope of the street and the place makes you feel like you are in a local restaurant in Mexico. A couple of weeks ago they changed ownership (although they say they didn't, the entire staff has changed) and it's a total disaster. I don't think that anyone in there has ANY restaurant experience whatsoever. The amount of disarray is really mind boggling, it's like nobody has a clue. You would get the impression that the wait staff not only has never waited tables, but maybe not even ever seen it done or been to a restaurant. I found myself in Mckinney one day looking for a good Mexican food place to eat at. When I searched Yelp, this place came up. I came in with my grandparents and my little cousin. We all enjoyed our food. The food is pretty authentic. Me and my granparents (Mexicans lol) all gave the food a thumbs up. My cousin ate a burger so that doesn't count. The food is what saved this place 2 stars. Now, if the food is so good and authentic, why 2 stars? Well, for one the customer service. It seemed like one person was doing everything. Taking our order, running to the kitchen, bringing our drinks, cooking the food... etc. It seemed this way because our server took forever to bring us our drinks or come checking on us at all. For example, when she brought us our drinks she gave me a can (of Dr. Pepper always) and a cup. When she left, as usual, I proceeded to pour my Dr. Pepper into the cup. The cup had tiny holes on the bottom. My Dr. Pepper starts slowly (very slowly) dripping onto the table. We start looking for our server. She's nowhere to be seen. Nobody is to be seen. We're the only ones there.. My grandmother has to literally get up and find napkins at another table. By the time our server comes, which she only came to deliver our food, my Dr. Pepper is half way gone.. My cousin even asked, "you think they will give you a new one for free? It looks as if you drank most of it", I said, "she bettaa". Now, secondly, this place is filthy. Everywhere you look you find dirt. It looks as if they haven't cleaned in weeks! And honestly, if that's what you can see out in front, imagine what you can't see back in the kitchen. There's napkin holders with no napkins on each table. Which is why my grandmother had to look around until she found some. Tables dirty, floors are filthy, even the walls look dirty. We were literally the only people there, so you would think they had an oportunity to clean some time during the day. I did enjoy the food, however when I go out to eat the cleanliness and customer service is as important to me as the food.
