I don't think I'm very picky when it comes to food in general, but I am very picky when it comes to barbecue. I suspect this is because not only is barbecue more expensive than many other types of food, but it seems like most barbecue restaurants just aren't that good - even some of the more popular ones. That is absolutely not the case with Ernie's. For me, the gold standard of a Texas barbecue restaurant is the chopped beef sandwich. If the chopped beef has many chunks of fat in it, I don't like it, and I probably won't go back to that restaurant unless something else they have is spectacular. For many years - since before I was born - Ernie's chopped beef sandwich has been called an "Ernieburger", and that's what I ate there the whole time I was a kid. I ate there for the first time in close to 30 years, and the Ernieburger was as good as it ever was! The chopped beef was perfect for my tastes, and the accompanying fries were good as well. This place is well worth the visit if you happen to be passing through Greenville, or even if you live in Dallas, about an hour away. read more

I came in for the first time to try it out, they didn't have baked potatoes or Mac and cheese they said. I was finishing my plate and someone ordered Mac and cheese a medium size bowl then another 2 people got sides of Mac and cheese after that before I left the building. Needless to say I will not be back due to bad customer service and lies. read more

The BBQ sauce is the tastiest, the hosts are the friendliest, and the pit master is one of the top in all of Texas. Stopped by an award winning bbq joint in greenville. First impressions was, this is oretty country, which I think is a good thing. There was at the time we got there, there was not table seating. They have seating like when you were at school with a small desk type table. The ribs were a bit tough and I felt like they needed bbq sauce to be good. I thought the brisket was amazing though, it was nice and tender , with the right amount seasoni and the bark was fantastic. The jalenpeno sausage had no heat but it was tasty the cheese was a bit much and kind of overpowered it. The fries were tasty would say about the same quality as a five guys. The Mac n cheese I thought was also good, I loved a good cheese crust on the top and middle and they accomplished that. Overall, I would give this spot an 8.3 out of 10. read more

Stopped here with two other coworkers for lunch. One ordered a frito pie which was extremely small. He was very disappointed. Another had a pulled pork sandwich which he said was good. I had a chopped beef sandwich, which was good. As a self proclaimed bbq judge, and 100% Texan, I would say this bbq was good. read more

Delicious, finger-licking good! Fantastic ribs and moist brisket, pulled pork, Cole slaw and potato salad. On Saturdays, they have stuffed jalapenos. I haven't had them, yet, but they're on my list for our next visit. Check out this local favorite BBQ, established 1948. Pshhh - who needs fancy Dallas BBQ when you've got Ernie's! Their brisket is so moist and thick cut. I stopped by and picked up a brisket plate, which comes with two sides of your choice. The Mac and cheese noodles don't have integrity to them and are mushy, the cheese solidfies into a sweaty block. The baked beans are wonderful and flavorful, I want to just get a bowl on a cold day to warm up with. The brisket plate comes with three thick cut slices of brisket and two slices of buttery bread. I wish the bread would be unlimited, as I personally can not fit three slices of brisket into two slices of bread. All the BBQ fixings are in the back. The venue has quite a bit of history attached to it, and houses memorabilia from the area. They also provide pecan pie and stuffed jalapenos on certain days of the week. An awesome place to get authentic Texas style BBQ, without waiting for hours. read more

I'm kicking myself for not trying Ernie's BBQ years ago. I've lived in NE TX for over 40 years, I even worked in Greenville for 10 years, but I'd never stopped at Ernie's until last week. I regret not stopping in years ago, I've missed it on some really good BBQ. I had their sliced brisket sandwich basket and it was so good that I didn't even use sauce. I have been coming to Ernie's for 10 years. It is a local legend that probably doesn't get much non-local traffic, but it should! The BBQ sandwich basket is the best I've had anywhere in East Texas. Whether chopped or sliced, they don't skimp on the brisket, and it is always tender and perfectly cooked. The French fries are hand cut and much better than you get at most bbq spots. I like the pinto beans as well. It's not open for dinner unfortunately though. read more

If you ever find yourself in Greenville Tx and do not go to Ernie'e BBQ, you are missing out. I have been in a town nearby and have eaten here twice. Hopefully I will eat here another time before I leave. The first time I had brisket and jalapeno cheddar sausage. I had three slice if brisket. First was lean. Second less lean and third had some fat. All were some of the best brisket i have ever had. I also had an entire link of jalapeno cheddar sausage. My goodness was it delicious. Used zero sauce. Sausage wasn't dry at all. The jalapeno heat was there. Excellent flavor. I had two sides but was topped out after meat. And here is the shocker. You will not be able to beat their price for this quality and quantity of food. It was that good. So next time you are in Greenville TX, stop and eat. read more

Although I have never dined in, Ernie's offer's a small area with seating. The decor is basically a hunters paradise with stuffed and mounted animals on the walls and a few nostalgic pictures. Nothing fancy, but it's ok. The service pretty fast and friendly, but the food is SOMETHING TO WEOTE HOME ABOUT!! They are so generous with the meat that you can make two meals from one plate. Even their sandwiches are loaded down with enough meat that it takes me three days to finish it. Even my husband ( a skinny guy who is a bottomless pit for food) said he was full from a chopped beef sandwich and that has never happened. That sauce isn't real good but of course when you have good smoke and flavor like you get at Ernie's you don't need sauce. I go here for lunch every chance I get ( it's close to my job) and then will pick up more on the way home for me and my husbands dinner. All I can say to sum it up is YUMMY TO MY TUMMY!!!! read more

Loved it! This was our first time to stop here and definitely won't be our last. What a cute little bbq place with the nicest people working there! We had no idea what some items were so we asked the girl taking orders for recommendations and she steered us right. Started with the Ernie's poppers, the bacon wrapped jalapeños stuffed with brisket. I only had one but could've made a meal on them, they were cooked perfectly and not too hot, just enough spice. Don't miss ordering those! My husband selected the Dirty Bird while my son and I got the Pistol Pete. Those are all sandwich baskets that come with one side, we all chose fries which were the yummy fresh cut ones that I'll get again. The Pistol Pete was brisket and jalapeño sausage chopped together with cheese and bbq sauce served on Texas toast (is it just me or does Texas toast make every sandwich better?) Yummy! Meat blend was perfect, had no fatty pieces, and just the right amount of sauce. The Dirty Bird is a mix of brisket with turkey and was every bit as good as Pistol Pete.
