Nice small BBQ place with ice cream area, sandwiches ribs and fresh fried pies! Delicious I stop every time I'm in the area!

In the Greenville tx area on business then heading back to Dallas. Traffic came to a full stop. So,I decided to take the next exit and have a BBQ sandwich at Bakers Ribs. They've been around long before the current BBQ craze. I used to eat at their Dallas Location back in the 1990s but, haven't been in 25 years. After fighting major construction congestion and stop and go detours,I finally pulled into the pot holed,gravel parking lot in front of the red 1980ish red metal building that is Bakers Ribs . I was also in search of The Original Fried Pie Company which happened to share space . Entering I found what I expected. Well worn old school roadside Texas BBQ place,just getting by . As with almost everyone else,they've upgraded to a thin screen digital overhead menu. I hate those things because they have no soul...yada,yada,yada I ordered the chopped beef sandwich and waited about five minutes for the few in front of me to gradually get their order filled by the one person,chopping meat,frying fries and filling orders . The vibe is worn out ,we tried western kitch decor in 1980. That's ok but,this is a sad little place that's seen its better day. Regressing slightly. When I first entered a case of various fried pies was the first thing I came to. More on that later . Pouring myself a unsweetened ice tea,I sat down to hopefully enjoy my sandwich. It was better than I expected,and after doctoring it up with onions, jalapeno, pickles and sauce,it passed my test, barely. I wish them well but,I probably won't go back. The owners need to either recomit to increasing the quality of their food and service or? Now to the fried pies. Yumalicious! I bought 6 at $3 75 each. 2 Cherry,2 Apple,2 Peach. I put three in the freezer and left the others out for consumption. Wow. Warmed up under the broiler and served alongside BlueBell Vanilla, niezzzz! Overall my experience was a whiff of the past. Jalapeño cheddar sausage is showstopper here. Brisket was more like a beef roast. Pork ribs were solid. Pies didn't taste or look fresh. Pie filling skimps on pecans and blueberrries. They also show their political leanings proudly. I'm not sure they would be happy if the opposite party did this, so it might be best for them not to do this. read more

My wife and I ordered a "full" smoked turkey from Bakers Ribs for Thanksgiving a month in advance. We were expecting a full turkey that would feed 10 to 12 people since that is what they said when we ordered the turkey. We asked for it to be presliced, picked it up the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and brought it home. When we opened it, we were shocked to find something closer in size to a small rotisserie chicken. There was absolutely no way this would feed our guests and definitely not leave any leftovers. In reality it barely fed 3 to 4 people. For $90, this was extremely disappointing and felt misleading. I called immediately after we realized the issue, and instead of trying to fix the problem, they only made excuses. We were told that "the turkeys are just smaller this year." If that is true, then they should not advertise it as a full turkey and should price it accordingly. While the flavor was good, the portion size and the lack of accountability from staff created unnecessary stress right before the holiday. Very reasonably priced BBQ, it's nice to be out of the city and have that option. It didn't blow me away, but definitely worth the cost. The ribs were very good, and the the turkey had good flavor. The sliced brisket wasn't as tender or flavorful but not bad either. The baked beans were very sweet, there was a strong sweetness I couldn't quite identify, plus a little spicy. I just got tomato/cucumber salad for my either side because I didn't want anything fried today. So didn't try a fried pie either, but it was cool to see them being made. Most of the sides are at the front for you to see and they'll put on your plate as you ask, then get your meats and other things on there quickly. Kind and quick service. Nice big open restaurant, and it wasn't loud at all, which was very nice. Definitely a good stop for a road trip to get a good meal at a reasonable price that isn't a chain. read more

We went here to introduce an overseas friend of ours to BBQ and it was the perfect place! My wife and our friend both had ribs and sliced brisket with coleslaw, green beans and potato salad as sides. I had the two meat plate of sliced brisket and sausage with potato salad and spicy beans. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and just right amount of smoke. The brisket was juicy, tender and again with the right amount of smoke. My wife wasn't impressed with the potato salad but I really liked it. I guess the best way to describe the experience is by stating that our friend, who is a bit of a food snob, ate every bit of food on her plate and gave us a huge smile and two thumbs up! Okay, I'm a big fan of smoke sessions in royse city. Sessions is better as for the meats and the sides. That said we only tried the brisket and turkey. The scalloped potatoes were pasty like and the green beans are straight outta the can. Now why did I still give it 4 stars?! THE FRIED PIES. Omg we got a German chocolate one and ate it and went back for another one and also got a blackberry pie. It is light, flaky, very very good. You must try the fried pies if you come here. Friendly staff greets you as soon as you enter. Plus. Great tasting 'Q. We had ribs, brisket, and a Frito pie (favorite item of the young man behind the counter) Big plus on the food. The fried pies? They are truly something special. We tried the apple and the peach cheese cake. I would highly recommend both, and maybe one or two we missed. Finally trying this one out. I got the 3 meat plate with ribs (obviously), pulled pork and turkey with pinto's & slaw. I also heated up some of the macaroni and cheese I brought with me. Everything at Baker's was so good. The main reason we stopped there was because we saw they had scalloped potatoes on the menu, and our daughter is crazy about scalloped potatoes. The food was below average and high priced. But, we ordered a side of sweet potato fries and they said they would cook them and bring them to us. There were no less than 5 employees behind the counter and a few others roaming around the restaurant. They didn't bring the fries and when we got up to ask for them they said they "forgot to cook them". We were 2 of less than 6 customers at the time. It's a pretty good deal for what it is. On this visit, we did our usual, rib plates, but when I ordered an extra side of green beans, they forgot (it was an add on item, as my wife also gets a baked potato which counts as two sides, and they didn't charge us for it). Overall it was good. Another drawback was that two of the ribs I got were still together and overdone. They weren't cut into two and were very, very dry. The sides were good, I usually get the potato salad (I give a B+) and the pasta salad (C-). The fried pies are good -when they have what you want; sometimes you just have to settle for what they have on hand. They're all pretty good, though. read more

Traveling through and chose this one based on reviews. Friendly staff, great decor and delicious food. We had sliced brisket, ribs and turkey. And sides of classic potato salad, smoked. Amex beans and pineapple coleslaw. None disappointed. We couldn't leave without trying their famous fried pies. We stopped in on a road trip looking for something unique and tasty. This place satisfied! The food hit the spot and the atmosphere was exactly what you'd want from a small town BBQ joint, wood paneled walls and vintage coca-cola sign included! Items tried: pulled pork, smoked turkey, sausage, potato salad, macaroni, green beans, fried okra. For dessert, banana pudding. The macaroni left something to be desired, resembled too closely something from a school cafeteria. Other wise the meat was tender with good flavor from the BBQ sauce. The potato salad was top notch. I found this on Yelp whole going through town so decided to check out the award winning bbq. They were not busy at at all on Friday around 5:00pm. The staff was all young high school maybe. Not very friendly at all. I said we had never been here and what was good no comments really just that it was fresh. We almost felt like we were bothering them. No smiles except for one girl after we said thank you have a good evening. The food was amazing!! I am born and raised Texan and had my fair share of bbq. Hands down this place has great ribs and brisket!! The fried pie were also amazing! So almost 5 stars for the meat and sides. The service needs to step up a little . We pulled off the highway on our way out of Texas going home to Indiana. Cool place and unexpected. A very Texas type of decor. Great variety of smoked meats, sides - both hot and cold and fried pies - both sweet and savory. I got the Monday special for $9.95. A half slab of ribs, two sides and choice of Texas toast or rolls. Spicy and mild sauces were available in bottles and came warm! Yum! My ribs were excellent and my husband's pulled pork platter was piled high. We both enjoyed banana pudding as one of our side options. He loved that his scalloped potatoes were home made and I loved that that my mac n cheese was sharp cheddar and very cheesy! While we won't make it here again anytime soon, I would absolutely put this on my "must visit" list next time we drive through Texas! Two thumbs up!!! read more
