The tea was Harney & Sons, but neither the London Fog nor the Earl Grey tasted like much of anything. The London Fog had lost the fog, and the Earl Grey had misplaced the Earl. The food was equally underwhelming: three tiny Pepperidge Farm-adjacent cookies, two scones with Smucker's jam, and a selection of sandwiches that were perfectly forgettable. The price was offensive, and nothing was memorable either. For a place that trades heavily on atmosphere, I wanted the food and tea to feel special. Instead, it felt like tea service designed by and for people who think black pepper is adventurous. If you're looking for a lovely room to sit in and pretend you're a Dickens character waiting for a letter that never arrives, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're looking for exceptional tea, creative bites, or an afternoon tea experience that feels worth the price, there are better options in New York. Aesthetic: 10/10. I think food was the weakest part of the experience, as the cupcakes likely came from a grocery store, and the portions were pretty small for what you pay. The best part was the curry chicken sandwiches, the rest was honestly meh. The decorations really transport you out of the city into Victorian England vibes. We should've been grateful that they canceled our reservation a week before we arrived because they had their annual blue ball private event; we were annoyed because they cancelled the reservation so late and we were extra annoyed when we noticed the cafe was actually open for business when we happened to visit the store! Anyhow, eventually they were able to fit us in so we decided to try the famous blue box cafe. There was constant confusion during the entire experience including insisting that we ordered a birthday cake (!! #eyeroll as I tried to tell them we were not celebrating any birthdays and did not order the prepaid cake - and likely it belonged to another table. Very awkward as the couple who actually ordered the celebratory cake looked on) Eventually, our orders were delivered in the afternoon. Tea was surprisingly abysmal. It was presented in the strangest manner with tiny pieces on a gigantic tiered platter normally used for seafood display - see the picture. While I recognize that one attends these type of cafés for the ambience, I was truly shocked at the low quality of food and disorganized service - and the ambiance was just meh. To make matters worse, someone from the host stand approached my mother and told her she could not wear her winter beanie -- on one of the coldest NYC Sundays in 30 years. I got the purple Yam Souffle which takes 25 minutes to make and my friend got the fried squid tails. We also got a signature Rose Green Milk Tea to share. The waitress who took our order has great memory and recalled all of our items without writing it down. She also reminded me that I could adjust the ice and sugar levels of my drink which I had completely forgotten and would have got annoyed if my drink came out 100% sweetness. Another thing is that my drink order frequently comes out wrong at other locations so I was glad she got it right! Green tea instead of black tea and with milk instead of without milk. The purple Yam Souffle is just like the other locations. Hot, soft cakey texture balanced with an ice cold red bean Ice-Cream. So delicious! The squid tails on the other hand was not what we expected. It came out burnt and hard. The outer batter was not crispy either. We informed one of the waiters and he brought it back to inform the kitchen staff. We received a new batch that was not as burnt and had more flavoring this time around. However, the squid was still hard and not like the ones we get from other locations with smaller crispier pieces. Overall, it was still a good experience and I love the decorations at this location! This might be my second favorite location after the Flushing one. Would love to come back for brunch or hi-tea. Or regular food options when I have not already eaten dinner. At first when the Dubai affogato was served, we did not realize that the amount of the coffee was little until we saw another customer's dish that the volume of their coffee looked significantly more than ours. My friend brought it to the waitress attention but the waitress brushed it off and did not acknowledge our concern. When we finished and were about to leave, the same waitress came over and showed us that the container of the coffee was different and hence the volume of the coffee looked different. At this point, we did not care for it anymore. We would have been fine if the staff acknowledged our concern. We thought that maybe using standardized containers for the coffee would avoid this problem. Other than that, the food and drinks were good.
