A friend and I discovered this on accident after looking for a place to drink tea after dim sum. We definitely came across a hidden gem. The tea shop initially looked like it only sold tea pots and cups, but there's a whole tea tasting experience to be had. For $20 or so depending on the tea, one of the shop owners (from Taiwan) will brew the tea in front of you while going through the whole brewing process, giving you a taste after each seeping. It was a calm and relaxing experience. You can buy lots of high quality tea leaves to go. The owners were very kind and you definitely should not be discouraged to if you don't speak Chinese. I think the owner greeted me. He's knowledgeable because when I described the tea I wanted, he was able to narrow down to two containers. He was right and very similar to the one I got in Taiwan. Sure it's expensive but at least I don't have to spend over 1k plane ticket to get in Taiwan. I have purchased in store and as my interests developed I reached out to them by email and they responded with a well thought out response on tea styles and what would be the best path to take in exploring different flavors and tea characteristics . I have made three online purchases from them all were fantastic and arrived without issue. I did have a tea tasting about three weeks ago now that I'm three years into my gung fu teas journey. Accompanied by my wife And two daughters we tried a raw pu erh tea. Our tea master who originated from Taiwan was incredibly knowledgeable and patient with three novices and one guy who thought he knew all about tea :). I really learned a lot from our brief conversations about different pots and giawans Taiwanese tea china mainland tea and Indian tea. The second tea we had was a GABA. Which I have but didn't enjoy. The contrast of GABA oolong to raw pu erh was a great teaching to understand flavors and caffeine levels My wife thought her heart was racing from the Pu erh but the GABA had a different sensation more calming feeling than the energy generating Pu erh. This review is from 2024, users should note the new location of Fangs is no longer in the small mall on Main Street. The store is now located on a standalone location. If you try to find it in the mall, it will not be there. The teas and teaware at Fangs is top notch and they feature some heritage artisans against their walls. The prices range from hundreds to thousands on some of these hand made tea pieces. It is too rich for my blood but if you are into teaware, this is the place for you to pickup something truly special for yourself or a close friend. The teas themselves are excellent as they work with importers. They have a variety of Taiwanese teas, featuring Oolong teas. You wont find many places in NYC and definitely not many other places in Queens that feature this quality of tea. Whether you want an grassy Alishan Oolong or a complex Dayuling, they have it. For a few years now they offer limited teas to go in a small cup that range fro 6-8 dollars depending on size. During the summer they have cold brew teas as well and during the winter it is mainly hot teas. Definitely worth the trip if you want actual tea and not boba tea or milky/sugary teas. Since COVID, they have not brought back their tea tastings. I hope one day that they do because it was a fun experience. What an expensive tea room! I've been to Teance in Berkeley which I considered to be rather expensive but this place takes the cake. The shop is located in a shopping plaza so you have to be on the lookout for a tea room. The tea room itself has many types of teapots and teas. There were yixing teapots, rock clay type of teapots, and many more. The teas ranged from white, green, red, and oolong teas. I believed I tried a lovely soft, slightly sweet green tea. One of the ladies helped us pour the tea and we all had a nice tea tasting. Unlike tea drunk in the west village or Teance in California, it almost seemed like they would kick us out after 7 steeps of tea. The other shops were more individual, independent tea shops that let the customers pour their own teas, allowing us to steep the teas completely. Usually at other shops, I can spend a few hours there to stretch my tea out. While it was a lovely service and the ladies were very nice in explaining different types of teas and teapots, I'd prefer to pour my own tea at my own pace. read more

Stumbled upon this wonderful tea room tucked away in the back of a shopping complex right off of Flushing's Main Street. We decided to stay for a cup of tea and ended up doing a sampling of three types of teas once we learned how it works. We tried a black tea, Puerh tea, and chrysanthemum tea. The pricing is set at around $5-15 per person per tea, and everyone at the table tries the same teas. So it was $15 each to do a 3-tea tasting and took around an hour. It was a very enjoyable experience as the person who was serving us the tea went through all the ritual steps and explained a lot about each of the teas. This place was fabulous and such a refreshing experience. You are in the middle of Flushing, New York. This is essentially a thriving second Chinatown in New York city and you are surrounded by the excited, noise, and bustle usually associated with being in New York. It was stressful for me since I'm from a slower, more relaxed city. I thought I'd like some tea and I have to say, this place just made my day. It is a small tea shop in the middle of this indoor mini-strip mall. There are about 5 stores in this first floor of the building that include a dry cleaner, nail spa, and a few other activities. The second you walk into this tea store, you forget that the rest of the stores and the rest of New York exist. They play relaxing music and I can honestly say that I think this was the first time I did not feel rushed in New York. The woman manning the store greeted us and walked us through the ordering process. Essentially, you select a kind of tea and have to pay per person to sample the tea. SHe will sit down with you at a table and talk you through the history of your tea, how that tea is made, and the specific steeping process that is used for that specific type of tea. This whole time, she will pour tea for you and explain both the exact steps she is using to pour the perfect cup of tea for each guest and how to drink it to get the full effect of the tea. It was so educational and I just had fun trying new kinds of tea (white and green tea in my case) that tasted very different from the packaged or even loose tea that I am used to buying whenever I go to British tea houses or a grocery store. I love Flushing for its chaos. And the most remarkable thing about Fang Gourmet Tea is that, despite being located in the middle of Flushing, it is one of the most peaceful and relaxing places I have been in the city. It's located in a little mall and is kinda hard to find from the street. Luckily, the entrance has the street address, 135-25, very clearly displayed on the door. I recently went here to do a tea tasting with a couple friends visiting. The tea tasting setup is beautiful in its simplicity. The way it works is you select a tea (most are $10 per person), an employee sits with you and teaches you about the tea, and you try five cups from the pot. As a tea noob, I found their tea list impressive and intimidating. I had no idea what to choose. My friends and I settled on the "original Dong Ding tea" because of its name, being honest. We loved our choice - with each passing round, as the tea leaves "activated", the scent of honey emanating from the tea became more and more heavenly, and the aftertaste increasingly smooth. The person who ran our tasting was very knowledgable - turns out Dong Ding is a mountain in Taiwan and the only location where this type of leaf grows. She also taught us what exactly an oolong tea is - a partially fermented tea that falls between green tea (no fermentation) and black tea (completely fermented). I will be back, and you should pay it a visit to take a zen-inducing break during your Flushing food-fest. read more

The main event here is tea tasting, where they resteep the same tea leaves five times so you can taste the difference in timing. Prices start at $5 a person. We decided to do a basic roasted oolong for our tasting, which ran nearly 30 minutes. It's definitely an experience worth trying; at the very least, it will force you to get off your phone. I would recommend it for tea enthusiasts or novices, and it's a good way to prolong your Flushing trip and space out your eating. Service was great and atmosphere was peaceful. However, I would recommend doing a more expensive tea (like $10 a person), as I didn't feel like the one we had was all that premium. I discovered this hidden little gem in the back of a crowed, disorganized storefront collection of various businesses on a food tour about a year ago and it's going to get my business every time I'm in the city from now on. Haven't been here? One of the signature items of interest is that they will do a tea tasting with you. You select what tea, and the shop owner will sit with you and discuss the finer points. Takes about 30 minutes! How cool is that? When this happened they asked what kind of tea I wanted to sample. Not prepared for the question I asked if they carried Pu-erh (expecting a "no") which is a funky, aged (usually) Chinese tea that where I'm from comes in only one or two forms at most. Here? They have probably 15-20 different ones, so every time I'm here I pick out a new one and they're superb. Slowly working my way through a terrific batch 1,300 miles from the purchase point. Side note: besides tasting good with a little caffeine kick the tea is filled with cholesterol lowering goodness. There's something really special going on here. I won't pretend to know much about Chinese and other Asian teas but everything I've sample here is so much better than what I can get that it merits my return every time I land at La Guardia. read more

These ladies really know their tea! I had an excellent experience coming here for Valentine's day after a not so great lunch on a day when temperatures were in the single digits. The relaxing and nicely decorated store full of beautiful (and expensive) tea sets was stimulating and fun to look at during and after my tea tasting experience. For the tea, I tried an Oolong one, which was really soothing, aromatic, and bold. But I would suggest you asking the ladies for their recommendations as they know the benefits of each of the teas. You can easily ask them for ones that will warm the body, ones that will speed up your digestive system (and help weight loss), or even ones that will help with health issues! The tasting experience ranges from $5-$20 per person depending on the tea you select. It was a slow but relaxing process where they pour the tea for you to taste up until 4 times. In a sentence, simply the best tea I've ever had. Fang is hidden away, even by Flushing standards; you've got to walk back through a strange entrance, past a couple other businesses. It's worth the work to get there, though. The shop itself is not fancy, but if you know a little about tea, you'll quickly start to see signs that you're in an extraordinary place. Tables for tea-tasting welcome you when you enter; lots of tea is inconspicuously nestled on shelves; high-quality yixing pots, gaiwans, and other teaware line the walls. A guided tasting is $15 ($12 if you become a "member") for three teas. Bring a friend, and allow an hour for your host to teach you about the teas being made. The staff know more about tea than anyone I've met in searching for tea on 3 continents, so don't worry, there is plenty to discuss. Make a day of it, and don't hurry. After your tasting, you can buy any teas you liked. They are expensive ($60 for a coffee-sized, 100g bag of tea), but the quality is far beyond anything available elsewhere (a pu-erh cliff tea from century-old trees). Their teaware is also top-notch; prices are reasonable for the quality (mostly in the hundreds of dollars). They specialize in Taiwanese and Chinese oolongs and pu-erhs - and extraordinary ones, from specific places, with stories. Knowing a little about tea beforehand is helpful; regardless of how much you know, you'll learn a lot more over the course of a tasting. I absolutely love this place! A friend of mine walking along Roosevelt saw a sign saying tea tasting. We wanted to see what it was about. Inside is very small but so home like with all employees so friendly. You go to the counter to review over there long tea menu, then choose one and proceed to the table with your tea expert. We stopped in early-ish after a late morning Chinese style breakfast in Queens with wonton in red sauce and xiaolongbao. It was a really hot day today with temperatures in the 90's and we stopped in to sample white, this year's green and their imperial grade puerh tea. My friends were new to Gongfu style tea and was very surprised by the simple yet sophistication involved in prepping the tea and in the amount of variation in the tea. I may have just indulged them to begin to be tea fiends. The shop also has a unique blend of teaware, some of which are extremely pricy but they have practical beautiful day use ones as well. Five stars, hands down. I only found out about their tea expo last two weeks of winter 2012-3. I attended 3x in 2 weeks, completed their pestle tea making 2x and tried 4 different tea tastings. Each was such an exceptional experience and I left feeling so educated. Who knew tea was so complicated! Pestle tea: they say it takes 20 minutes to make, but seems like it takes 30-45 minutes (for beginners). I did it twice with different peoples (all newbies) and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It's ten dollars per person and you get variety of nuts to grind in a mortal and pestle. It's an arm work out, but during the time, you get to talk to your companions and it's a lot of fun. The end result is tea that is very thick and nutty. You get to witness nuts becoming nut paste before your eyes and it's pretty cool. I've been motivated to try to make my own peanut butter. Ha! Tea tastings: I tried black, oolong, puerh, and cliff tea. My favorites were oolong and cliff, since they don't have that bitterness that black teas have. Each time, my tea guru Angela gave us a good history of the tea, where the leaves are grown, the taste of the teas during different brews, and how the tea leaves are grown. So thoughtful, so intense, and so calming. I loved it. Prices are definitely on the more expensive side, but it's definitely worth it. The staff are so knowledgeable and that experience is completely fulfilling. I was told while the expo is annually, smaller versions of this is done at their tea shop. I have made two visits and each one is different depending on the tea expert you share your tasting experience with. The English language will be a wee bit difficult for some to carry on as at a conversational level. Don't let this deter you. This has not affect in the tea tasting service. For tea lovers with a desire to try the more unusual and rare, Fang Gourmet has a huge variety of such teas. It excited my taste buds. The tea house is tucked away from the bustling avenue. It'll located inside the rear of a building. (They have a small hanging signage outside by its entrance.) Prices are modest to high for what you get from a fine tea purveyor, but not as absurd as Tea Drunk (East Village). This place was awesome. Initially I went into their store but one of the sales lady there walked me over to the Sheraton Hotel where the tea tasting was taking place. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon with a friend. They sat us down and suggested we sign up to be members which would enable us to buy tea samples for $3 instead of $5 per tea. Now, that sounds expensive but it's actually a deal. They prepare the tea and they keep on pouring until you're satisfied so you get your fill. While you're tasting the teas, the host explains the tea history along with explaining how it should be prepared. The information was really useful. I took away a star because after the tea sampling, my friend and I wanted to take a look at all the tea pots they had for sale. It's a bit suffocating when the host follows you around explaining all the history of the tea pots. I listened courteously for the tea sampling but would have appreciated a break. Also, they really try to push products on you. I ended up buying one item but please don't push your luck. All in all, it was a great and relaxing experience except for the sales pressure. The quality of their tea is their saving grace, and the only reason I gave two stars instead of one. My friends and I stopped here to try some of their tea (this place provides a tea-tasting service to let you try before you buy.) Normally, I appreciate services like this, and to be fair, they do give you more than just one sip during the testing. They give you 5-7 little cups (about 2-3 mouthfuls), showing you the different flavors as the tea is steeped and resteeped multiple times. Their teas are good quality, and it shows during the tasting. But these people totally rip you off due to how payment for the tea tasting service is set up. They charge per tea, per person. So, if you have a group of four people, and Person A wishes to try an Oolong for $10, that person will pay $10. That's fine. But what isn't fine is if Person A would like to share the tea that they paid for with the other three people, those other three now have to pay not for their own set of tea, but for the same amount of tea already provided to Person A. So, if Person B from the group takes so much as a sip from Person A's Oolong, they now owe $10 as well. It's the SAME AMOUNT OF TEA. They do not make extra tea for Person B. They do not get their own set of tea leaves. They are now paying $20 for the exact same amount of tea as before, using the same tea leaves. If all 4 people wanted to try that same Oolong, it would be $40 total, but the shop is still only spending the same amount of resources as they would for 1 person. And, to top it off, the guy steeping the tea sits with you and he drinks the extra tea. Instead of allowing Person A to share the leftover tea with B, C and D, the guy steeping the tea drinks the extra tea himself. That $10 was for the tea. It should be mine to do with as I please, and I do NOT want to pay for him to drink the leftover tea himself. I will not be coming back to this place. It's a shame, because their tea really is quite good, but their business model is shit. Oh well. There are other places that sell quality tea. read more

My wife and I stopped by here on a Saturday afternoon after reading about the place in a neighborhood guide. We were warmly welcomed, seated, and given a menu with over 50 different teas to choose from. We chose two different options, and immediately, the journey began. Our host regaled us with anecdotes about his family and love for tea, dropped knowledge on the different techniques in which the teas were made (and the pros and cons to each), and guided us through the tasting process every step of the way. A note to visitors - to get back to the shop, you have to walk past/through a number of other businesses, but don't give up - your destination is not far. We're recommended this place to a number of our friends in the area and will continue to do so. This place was awesome! Really hard to find but definitely a hidden treasure. I've been looking and looking for a good place that sells top quality whole leaf teas and this is it! More people must must must know about this place because they do taste-ins where you can taste the teas before you buy them. And they're not just 'samples'. They do it the ceremonial way so that you get the full authentic tea experience and really savor the top quality taste. They have great pu-erh tea cakes (my favorite) and delicious varieties of teas. The tea expert/instructor taught us so much about different teas. It was great. They also do 101 on teas once in a while and other kinds of awesome seminars which they told us about!!
