We recently upgraded our backyard/patio with multiple TV's and we came to Matt with a concept of having him build a bar top built on casters for us. We wanted a bar table that was easily movable on wheels for the ability to be in different locations in our patio. We discussed with Matt our design concept and he discussed the need for stability and he came up with a fantastic table design that we absolutely love. We have contracted with Matt Eso 3 times for major remodeling projects in our home. First the kitchen & guest bathroom, then upstairs hallway bathroom and finally our large master bedroom bathroom. All 3 projects were gutted and built from the bottom up. And all 3 times we were extremely happy with the high quality of cabinetry, counter tops, fixture installation and electrical & plumbing work!! All of Matt's workers are highly competent and very easy to work with. Matt helped us with design and gave us many excellent suggestions to complete our project. I usually do not right many reviews however in this case I feel very strongly about what we experienced. I was referred to Matt through my manager at work who had known Matt for a long time. We did not know too much about construction but wanted to do a kitchen remodel and new deck with some room upgrades new paint and new roof. We initially went to Matt for the kitchen and we became very comfortable with him and he became our general contractor on the entire job. Esoteric build their own cabinets and the workmanship has been excellent. Few other points, if you want someone who is ethical as well as honest, Matt is the guy. We were afraid to pick a contractor who we didn't know as this is a large project with a financial commitment . I can say at the end of it that based on our initial estimates we came very close and in fact matt was very flexible on a number of things. Any issue he was responsive and would come out to the site immediately. The job is now complete and we could not be happier. We also really wanted an island and the initial plans we felt we couldn't fit it in. After the demolition matt called us and said we can totally fit an island into the area. We were thrilled. In addition, the folks that he had working for him and his contacts are trust worthy and ethical as well as hardworking as what we have come to know of Matt I would recommend him to any one looking not only to do a kitchen remodel but as a general contractor as well that you will find friendly and trustworthy A number of contractors get exhausted by the number of revisions that are made and revised estimates. Due to our lack of understanding of construction, we went back to revisions multiple times. Matt was terrrific through this process and extremely patient. read more

Poor quality work, not responsive to calls. Didn't finish on time despite numerous promises to do so. Don't spend your money with them.

We decided to hire Esoteric after I fell in love with my friend's new kitchen and first floor remodel that was just finished by Esoteric. It wasn't in the budget for us to do a full kitchen remodel so I met with the owner, Matt, and asked him what we could do to update our kitchen on a smaller budget. We ended up refacing and changing the color from outdated honey oak to a soft custom white with a glaze and grey for the island. They used a conversion varnish finish, which is rock hard and smooth (unlike paint) I selected my new cabinets doors off of Pinterest and Matt matched the style exactly and custom made them for us! We also got new crown moulding, new soft close hinges, 2 new trash can pull outs, new wine rack, new hardware, new built in microwave (they had to cut the cabinet to make room), new corner cabinet unit, that had to be custom cut. Also, they removed the old pull-out cutting board, patched and painted it, so its no longer is an eye sore. I feel like I have a new kitchen! read more

We just completed a kitchen redo. my wife is very PICKY, I had little to do with the entire operation but have to say Matt did an excellent job. He was referred by another teacher and everything they did was excellent . The sub contractors showed up on time and cleaned up before they left. My wife was very critical about the execution and when things were not to her liking Matt made sure that changes were made that would make her happy. While I subcontracted a few elements, I was quite happy with the crew that Matt provided for counters, tile, plumbing, and electrical. Matt's crew and subcontractors are professional, courteous, prompt, and detail-oriented. They listened to my wishes and worked with them to design a kitchen that I love more every day. And, yes, Matt's cabinets honestly are the most beautiful in the industry. He even let me design my perfect shade of aqua wash for the finish, so my kitchen is unique and a true reflection of my tastes, rather than a copy of whatever is popular at the moment. His commitment to detail even extended beyond the end of the job and the last payment, which is a true measure of professionalism. The timeline he offered at the start of the contract was accurate within three days. This is key, because a commitment such as a full kitchen tear-down is daunting, and nobody wants to also fear that the contractor will vanish midway through. That is not a worry with Esoteric. While other contractors may promise a cut-rate price, you'll likely pay for it later in poor craftsmanship, or other unhappy surprises. Matt's prices are consistent with the industry, and very fair, considering the level of craftsmanship in the cabinets. Problem: I wanted to recreate what was lost to a black water flood. Matt has his own way of doing things and wanted to give me what he wanted rather than what I wanted. Phone call of over 1.5 hours and then the shop drawings did not reflect the changes. He wanted me to OK them anyway. Another 1.5 hour phone call required to correct what had not been noted on the shop drawings and missed in his documents. I had requested that doors be the same size; (instead of a lot of different sizes), door opening had been reversed; an area around a built in refrigerator was never right and is still not right. He wanted to make the cabinets higher than a garden window and have a step down into the window. For his convenience. Not the look I wanted. Took lots of work to get it my way. I gave them samples of the stain and the formula. When the cabinets arrived they were not even close to what had been approved. Seems Home Depot did not carry the brand of stain and they just did something else. Cabinets were rejected. I spent an entire day calling and another day driving all over Southern CA to get the correct stain in the amount he required. Never bothered to reimburse me or credit me for the over $400.00 worth of time, mileage and materials. Said they could refinish my stairs. What a mess. With one day notice I was informed I would need to be locked upstairs (we have pets) so they could do a "professional' Job. So we did it. Hubby (at 65 years old) climbed a ladder to bring me food and I was a prisoner for 5 days. What a horrible job. Stain was too thick, cloudy, began flaking off in a matter of days. Matt took responsibility and said would fix it. I got material from a refinish expert, did my homework and spoke with both satin and sealer manufactures and was told how to do the job. I had already paid $3900 for the refinish job. Matt refused to follow manufactures recommendations and walked off the job. Matt at Esoteric wrote in an e-mail: "The suggested 'game plan' is one that is completely geared to your advantage even though it can be reduced and refined, in terms of extensive expenditure of time and money and is yet another example of the blatant disregard for the well being and interest of me, my people and Esoteric Woodcraft. " This was NOT my game plan it was what was required by the manufactures o f the materials to do a professional job and allow proper drying times in between coats. I was left with raw wood sanded stairs. They had no concern for my situation or what they did to me. Problems: * Sink was to have lip - it does not * Cabinets were OK but needed several corrections - by others - (read pay someone else) o NO stops on 2 cabinet doors I had to purchase different ( upgraded) hinges and add stops. o When installed one door was installed opening wrong direction. Yes, they corrected it but left the old screw holes. Had to have filled, sanded and stained. * Cabinet doors were too close and hit one another when trying to close - had to be adjusted * Granite installer did not caulk several areas - had to request he return * Lots of wood fill in oak miter joints - Not acceptable by industry standards - paint grade yes oak NO * One trim piece never nailed to wall at lower portion * Drawers do not stay closed when pushed in. I had same design in past with NO problems. If you have no idea what you want you can use him. If you want quality and know what you want...find someone else to do the job. read more

I am a fan! These remodel projects should go as smoothly and accurately as mine did but that is not always the case. That is why I'm writing this review because my experience with our bathroom remodel went so flawlessly and with minimal to no delays. Matt Eso was great about writing down all details entailed in the project and conveying them to his construction team. On that subject: Marino, Sergio, Nestor, etc. are professionals that do not need hand-holding and are concerned about everything being done correctly and to our satisfaction. They are all as concerned as the customer about getting things right. Your fears about these types of projects will vanish. This is what we intuitively expect and it is possible to achieve. Never even made it to the estimate! There were communication problems from the start (long story), they failed to show up at the agreed upon date/time to view the project, and when the missed appointment was brought to their attention it was several days before I heard a word. Even then I was left a message asking me to call them with information on the scope of work (which had previously been provided) - no apology offered for the missed appointment, no explanation ... There are too many contractors out there to even think about entering into a contract with a business that has this little respect and consideration for its potential customers! read more

After my review Matt contacted by text to let me know he was surprised about how I felt and wanted to "make it right". Brea Electric came right out and fixed a few little issues and did a great job. Matt also sent a tile guy to look at the shoddy tile job. This guy basically said the whole tile job would need to be redone and he would need to talk to Matt. The original tiler put the glass tile directly on wall, resulting in uneven and cloudy tiles. I never heard anything further from Matt. At no time did Matt come to my house to look or talk to me about tile. I would not recommend him as a general contractor, he won't take responsibility for the sub-contractors he hired. read more

I rarely post on Yelp unless I am moved to one extreme or the other I try to be equal opportunity. Today I am posting to rave about a new wall unit/Cabinets that went in my home office. I knew what I wanted and I reached out to Esoteric woodcraft in short order I had a design plan and executed a contract. Most of my contractor experiences are poor because they never live up to the contract and they generally would rather argue then correct poor workmanship so I generally am on edge to explain how they are not doing things to code etc. Esoteric came in with the highest quality product I wasn't even expecting the no slam hinges etc. team of installers are very mindful of their environment, I have wood floors I am always worried about, drop a nail and step on it and I have a permanent gift on my hands, they come in and install and are out of your way. I would only recommend Esoteric woodcraft for woodwork of the highest quality beyond expectations. read more

Our 30-year old kitchen just got a great update with Esoteric! Our custom kitchen cabinets needed some tender loving care (fresh paint, new boxes, new hinges, new hardware, etc.). We had our initial meeting with Matt last November and were immediately impressed with his thoroughness in the pre-planning process. He also recommended a great interior designer (Carolyn Beard with Finishing Touches) who helped guide us through our color options and "look." Other work included installation of new backsplash tile, installation of quartzite on our counter and island, removal of an old vent hood attached to our cabinets and installation of a new flue-type, and installation of a new sink. We were told the project would take three weeks and it did within one day! The workers showed up when they were scheduled to do so, were friendly and courteous, and cleaned up the work areas as best as possible. Gabino did a super job fabricating the quartzite! Matt was always responsive to any of our concerns and frequently stopped by to check the work was being done correctly. We will definitely use Matt on our next projects--bathroom updates.
