I want to like this place a lot, as a local alternative to Starbucks and Caffe Bene. But I find the coffee is decent, not stellar, and the challah french toast was barely edible. It was basically bread that had been only barely dipped, not properly soaked, in batter, so the inside was just bread. Love the local support this place gives: local art, local musicians, etc. Every town needs to have one of these. The feel is hipster without being too hip. The teas and coffees are decent, however my favorites drinks are the hot drink concoctions: chais, apple ciders, seasonal lattes, etc. You never feel rushed however sometimes there can be kids running around, which can be...frustrating. read more

I noticed most of the individuals that posted a review about this business has some sort of negative interaction with this café due to their ethnicity. I agree with everyone. This place is not inclusive. The owner is Latina but what we would call a "white Latina." Because they blend in as "white" they will not admit to being Latino unless is convenient to them when it's in their favor, pretty pathetic and sad. Latinos know exactly what I am referring to. I am an Afro Latina and this place does not welcome people like us. They are always condescending and rude. I observed the difference in the treatment of people of "color" vs a white customer. Jackson heights is a beautiful melting pot of a variety of ethnicities this place is not. There are other local business I will support. This place will not receive any sort of monetary compensation; they are an embarrassment to the progress of inclusion in Jackson Heights and the borough of Queens as a whole. I walked in there one day and asked for a green tea latte. The Cashier stated "what is that? How do you make that.?" I looked at the menu oh excuse me I stated the Matcha Latte." I told the cashier his name is Vinny btw, I said you couldn't just understand that they are similar and you could have corrected me but let me guess you love being sarcastic." Yes he had nothing to say. Sometimes you just have to call out people on their nonsense. That was the final straw for me. If you want to see change don't complain anymore just do not support them. Find a local business that treats you with respect no matter your creed, gender or ethnicity. Try a place called Cannelle Patisserie; yes they actually bake their own pastries. read more

The reason for a coffee shop is the coffee and the coffee here is really not good. The other day I ordered the darker roast and it was not at all dark. After I added milk, it barely had any coffee flavor. I live very close to this place and would come all the time if they just had a decent coffee. Please E77, upgrade your coffee. I like their ice coffee, and the fact that they carry Timmy O's custard. The atmosphere isn't great though. It's too crowded to enjoy a quiet conversation or get work done, there are way too many strollers/babies, and the owner is downright unpleasant for no particular reason. Its always refreshing to go to expresso 77 either to look at the art pieces on the wall (they change them pretty often) and drink a cup of coffee or grab a glass of wine and listen to live music. very rude and aggressive people...avoid! avoid! I was going to this place since it opened and it was a small hole, returned after the renovation for the first time as I have moved elsewhere. I had a coffee and some food and wanted to do some emails, the place was not busy, but they allow internet only on the central table which was full, so they just told me to sit somewhere else, I did. 90 minutes later the big table was empty as the rest of the cafe...I had just connected my laptop to the socket as my battery was 1%... so a super rude waitress came and asked me to move to the big table, before even finishing my sentence telling her that this is where they told me to sit the manager jumped behind her back and with very aggressive manner told me that it is not allowed to connect my laptop in their socket and that I had my coffee and food and now I should leave! Have not seen something like this before...of course they came over after I had paid the order and not before...as I first took their permission before ordering...and indeed both the waitress and the manager had witnessed the whole dialogue I had before sitting down. Manager is super rude and aggressive, he needs some therapy or some similar treatment as he has some issues with social behaviour. Meanwhile customers should not reward people who do not know how to behave! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. I'm a lifetime QUEENS girl. It took me by surprise because I'm such an Astoria coffee house person. This has to be THE ULTIMATE Thumbed NOSE to Starbucks east of Astoria since our beloved El Greco cafe now closed, 8 yrs., owing to high rents and a crime wave 2k1-2k6. Everything there is excellent and that goes double for the coffee. One memorable 3.5 hr visit had to do with having forgotten my house keys. I wound up getting ALL of my papers graded, ate dinner listened to the 2nd debate and had a chance to talk to the owners and the new regulars. The food is also very good. Barring some of the reviews, most people in the area haven't been disappointed. Service is very good. Table service is available and recycling is encouraged with receptacles. Evertime I go there the owner alwys asks me, w/ a wink, if I remembered my keys. We missed a neighborhood "place" to hang out that's NOT Manhattan. To the new people out there, I understand you might find some of us obnoxiously overrate this place. You must understand that those of us who have grown up in and near the neighborhood or are very longterm residents have seen many changes in this neighborhood. Most of them haven't been so happy or safe ones. When pvt. biz closes we all feel it in many different ways but we are affected. THere was a period of time after the El Greco cafe closed I only went to Astoria. E77 gives us hope the neighborhood is coming back. Starbucks only frightens me. I don't think it will close owing to the amount of biz they get therefore they can afford to offer FREE WIFI. How can E 77 do it and still be able to pay bills?? perhaps that's why they are open from 7am-10:30pm. How about demnading Congress to make the internet free as it should be. Europe & the rest of the world doesn't seem to have a problem offering it FOR FREE!!!! read more

Even so; that does not take away the greatness of this cafe. Upon notifying the owners of 77; they immediately responded with a sincere apology and tended to the matter immediately. Like having Espresso 77 in the neighborhood for offering a calm, relaxing, sunny alternative to the somber-hued mob scene at Starbuck's. A little pricey, but the coffee is certainly good. As for Wifi, people on this post need to get off their high horses. This is a café with sparse seating, and they're in business. If you need to park and use a laptop for more than 45 minutes, go to Starbuck's. There needs to be a place for folks like me who DON'T suffer the need to be plugged in all the time, and who enjoy cafés for reading, light conversation, or just taking in the ambience. I agree with the 45-minute time limit, to avoid unpleasantness. But stick to it, guys! I'm with you! read more

There's no denying that this is a cute place. There's even no denying that the food is good. I bought an apple cider chai when I first got here at 12:30PM for $3.50. After spending some time working on my laptop, I then bought a scone for $3. Around 3:15, I was told they have a 1 hour limit for people using computers. Come again? Now, it would be one thing if I sat here and mooched off of their wi-fi. But, I actually believe in contributing to the success of local places and, in 3 hours, spent $6.50 and was eyeing the menu again for something to nosh on as I continued to work. Now, however, instead of buying something here, I think I'll mosey over to the Starbucks a couple of blocks over. No one there interrupts me to tell me that there's a limit on their wi-fi usage, despite my having bought a drink and a scone. read more

Like many of the other reviewers here I thought this was the perfect place to study in the neighborhood upon my first visit. I was there for a total of four hours and the staff was pretty friendly. However upon my second visit the owner/manager was there, and boy was he rude. I was on my laptop, (mind you I wasn't even using their wifi or any wifi for that matter) just studying from pdf's I have saved. After about two hours he came up to me and told me about their policy of one hour limit for customers. If this is your policy, please put it on the walls. The dirty chai latte and espresso I had were pretty good which is why I'm giving it two stars but the rudeness of the manager/ horrible customer service takes away from the whole experience. The manager here needs to change his attitude and way of talking to customers and I'll explain why. I don't like to write long reviews, but now I have to. So, I went to this place, ordered just a regular house blend coffee. It was ok, just like in most other places, nothing special I would say. I didn't try anything else, as I didn't get a chance to do so, because of the manager's attitude. So, after ordering my coffee, I tried to open my laptop and I was about to start working, then the manager came and said you can't sit here with laptop. If, you can't sit with your laptop, then why you have wi-fi ??? First of all I've literally been in more than 100 coffee shops and this is the first time I've heard such a rule that you can't sit with your laptop, second and what really pissed me off was his reply and attitude. When I asked why (why I can't sit with my laptop) this is exactly what he replied "there's no why, you just can't sit here with laptop." And then he told me "this is a coffee shop and there's a sign". And another thing that really pissed me off is that when he was talking he was acting like he's smart and person if front of him is stupid, that's exactly what it felt like and I'm not exaggerating. I think this place has good stuff according to other reviews, but the manager and his attitude was probably one of the reasons why the place was almost empty on the 4th of July weekend, where other places was busy and why the place has only 3 and a half stars. I was gonna come here again, but because of his attitude I'll never go there again. And I'm not the only one that was pissed from his attitude, you can see other similar reviews which I should've check before I went there, but anyway.... My suggestion to this manager: if, you're honest with yourself and can see your negative attitude and if, you want to have more customers and better reviews, it would be better, if you let people sit with their laptop just like all other coffee shops around does, but MOST IMPORTANTLY it would be better, if you change your attitude, way of talking to people and explaining things in a positive way, otherwise you will loose more customers, get more bad reviews and probably the stars will go less than 3 and a half and eventually the business is not gonna prosper enough. read more

I wanted to like this place. I really did, since I was excited to find an independent coffee shop in the area. That said, I can't find a redeeming quality about this place: the espresso I ordered was under extracted and acidic, the barista was completely unfriendly, and their heavy-handed policies did anything but make me feel like a valued customer (I sympathize with a no-screen policy in a small space, but posting a notice that someone can't grade papers or work on a "project" with others in a coffee shop? Unreal!). On top of that, they [fairly] recently closed off their bathroom to customers, leaving you with nowhere to go but the Starbucks two blocks away when the coffee you just drank inevitably makes you have to pee. From now on, I'll just cut out the middleman and go there, despite the fact I'd rather support local businesses than chains. But this local coffee house is clueless when it comes to coffee house culture. read more

This place gets four stars from people because we have nowhere else to turn in this hood and there's an intense social element to it, which I can appreciate on a day when the stroller mafia isn't out in force. It's Brooklyn/Manhattan prices for coffee that is only worth that when a particular barista is working. I have no idea what it takes to make a coffee shop profitable, so I feel a little bad accusing the owner (who is a really nice guy) of overcharging, but I hate the sensation of being gouged that I always have at 77. And yes, the food is incredibly slow and uneven. Some things are delicious, but a lot of things aren't. I've probably spent over a thousand dollars here in the last four years, more out of desperation than anything else. Lately I've been coming in less and less, preferring to spend my cash once I get to Manhattan somewhere with a little more consistency. It's weird to even be writing a review after all this time, because it's not going to have an effect on the business, but if they could just bring prices down about 15%, I'd be able to say I was a fan and give another star for reasons other than the food. I live several blocks away & am just a tiny bit fussy about my coffee (the sound you hear is my co-workers screaming about the hand grinder & the Aeropress & the beans from a guy who roasts in small batches, oh please, what's next, growing your own? well, if I could ...). And I still love dropping by to grab a latte here. Some unusual beers, Italian sodas, & the like keep my husband happy; in the evenings there's a wine contingent swigging away, & sometimes live music. Cookies & pastries are quite good; we haven't tried much of the food, but the patrons wolfing up oatmeal in the morning & sandwiches later on look happy. The "let's use this as a free office" crowd is kept away by limits on Wi-Fi & a no-laptop policy on weekends, so, although it's a small space, it's cosy rather than stifling, with actual conversations happening. Claustrophobes & dog owners like us can hang out on the wooden benches out front, too. I'm puzzled by the "grumpy staff" reviews; everyone from the owner on down has always been very pleasant, & we've been going here since it opened. It's child-friendly but the piping voices are not overwhelming (thank you to JH parents, who know the difference between lively & bratty, & to the shop for providing some kids' books), & sound much better than the clacking of keyboards. Haters & Wi-Fi mooches, Starbucks is just a couple of blocks away. read more

Had my first trip here today and spent about 3 hours studying. I really loved it right from the get go. I ordered the New Orleans style cold-brewed iced coffee. The barista suggested I have it with regular milk and it was a spot-on suggestion. It was perfect! Best iced coffee I've had all summer. I also ordered the espresso brownie which was beautiful, chocolatey and moist. As several reviewers have mentioned, there are a number of customers with young children and that may be a difficult districaction for those of us trying to get some reading done. However, nobody with children stayed more than 15 minutes and the type of parents here seemed to understand it wasn't a place to bring junior an let him cry and whine. It's just too small of a space. So, I wasn't really bothered by the kid scene, I just don't know if Jackso Heights happens to have conscientious and considerate parent types, or if I just got lucky. In any case, I will definitely be back when I'm in the nabe. read more
