I am a very pregnant lady who has had intense cravings all throughout her first trimester. This evening I sent my husband on a hunt for pupusas. We found this place and it was an amazing choice!! Felt like we got half of the menu. The food looked like a Salvadoran grandmother just invited me into her home and made me a plate. The chicken is super good, as is the chili relleno. We got pupusas that were, in my husband's words, "THE BOMB DIGGITY." But when it comes to their horchata... there are no words to the sweet incredible nectar they serve. Well, maybe one: authentic. The pupusas at Estela's are satisfying and inexpensive. Seeking the best pupusas in Valley, I was drawn because of their stellar Yelp reviews. I called in my order for pick-up. The small, non-descript "hole-in-the-wall" is located where I spent a lot of time as a child. I lived in the neighborhood for four years as I drove in I recalled trips in the 80s to buy my kung fu slip ons at the Payless and trips to a Korean fast fashion store across the street which was probably one of earliest locations of Forever 21. Passing the shopping center, I would't have noticed the restaurant if it wasn't for Yelp. I walked in before noon and the place was packed. It's a small dining room, but most of the tables were full. Unfortunately, I didn't get a warm and friendly vibe which would make me not want to be a restaurant regular. I didn't get a good vibe from the guy at the register. He didn't seem happy to be there. Maybe he was having a bad day or just isn't friendly. I ordered 3 because they were inexpensive. I ordered the lorroco, mixto and calabasa. I located a nearby park to eat my pupusas at the Hansen Dam in Lake View Terrace. Relishing the stillness of the park on a weekday afternoon, I ate my pupusas and decided my favorite was the mixto because it was the most flavorful. They threw in plenty of curtido which let me feel less guilty of scarfing down my carb-filled lunch. They were so hefty in size, I needed that 1.5- hour walk exploring this park! Go for the value, not for the service. The pupusas were delicious! I haven't had a pupusa yet that I didn't like. To find the best, I might need a side-by-side comparison. My favorite pupusa eating experience is located in a private home in South LA where they are slanging pupusas and champurrado in the back of their house. Yelp pupusas in South LA. I was super sick and just gotten out of Urgent Care when I drove by here. I knew I had to eat something but I wasn't craving anything. I saw yelp and this place came. I was driving by it so I stopped by and try it out. I got 3 pupusas, 2 de queso con loroco y 1 revuelta. The were so big I couldn't finish all 3 of them. They were pretty good, some of the best I've had from a restaurant (of course not better than the ones you eat at El Salvador). But the guys sitting next to me ordered the sopa de pollo and it looked and smelled delicious!!!! Came here this morning with my parents and sister, let me tell you the food is very good! Not to mention that they bring you a bucket of curtido and a bottle of the sauce rather than giving you small portions. The pupusas are large so they're filling. The cool thing about this place is that it makes you feel at home (I'm Mexican by the way) with the staff talking amongst themselves and the environment inside although it's very small. I will definitely be coming back and recommending it as well. read more

Been looking around for a new pupuseria and found this one, they were pretty good. Loved that it was chessy and had a good amount of beans (black ) and meat. Loved that the masa wasn't thick which i dislike when it is , and they were a decent size for they price. Will be coming back when im in need of some pupusas , next time will try some yuca frita if they have some. read more

Just came here for the first time even though I live so close. My sister insisted we come here for pupusas de arroz, which are similar to the original pupusas but the masa dough is made from rice. When we got there the lady told us they had ran out or rice dough for tonight so we need up ordering regular pupusas. We got revueltas (which is a mix of cheese, beans and pork) and queso con loroco (which is cheese with an aromatic green veggie). Both types of pupusas were really good! The sizes are ginormous as well. You will end up having to unzip your pants if you manage to finish both of them. We took some home for my parents at the end of the night and they loved it as well. The curtido (cabbage salad with vinegar) and salsa were very good too. This one is not spicy at all but the flavor still comes through. I will definitely be back to give the pupusas de arroz a try. read more

I have to give this place 1star. I've ordered here before. But never have I been treated with such disregard. I suppose the owner (man behind the counter, acting like one) doesn't like getting asked questions like; How much does the empanadas (fried plantines & cream)cost? How many come in one order? Three he said. As a paying customer I thought never mind. I'd rather not pay for three little plantine balls & cream. Way to expensive for my taste. Thinking I'm only feeding three my husband, daughter & myself. I'll go with pupusas & yuca Frita instead. He sounded upset over the phone when I was trying to place the order. But naive me proceeded anyway. He told to stop by in half an hr. When I arrived my order was ready. But I still craved something sweet. I asked for an atol de Elote. It's suppose to be a warm sweet corn based drink. Stood by watched them reheat it. Told him It looked ready. Guess he didn't like that. Had me waiting for about five minutes. Stupid me stuck around. Finally he handed me the drink and said bye. As I walked to my car. I noticed the lid started to melt. I took one last step and the boiling, piping, steaming hot drink spilled all over my hand!! I shouted in pain, my daughter got out the car. I nearly cried. But held back tears. I didn't want to scare her anymore than I already had. Needless to say I called. Scolded the owner for being careless and hurting me. I let him know he should be more careful but in his smug Salvadorian gold wearing chain way. Said oh that's too bad.. sorry! To which I responded you don't care!? If I blister & scar you'll see me again. So please steer clear of this place. They run it like they don't need the business. I'm also part Salvadorian and proud of it. But this place deserves zero stars. No love. Super overrated & overpriced. There are way to many Restaurants with like menus. It is quite difficult to find a Salvadoran restaurant that is consistent with their food. I've been going here for about five years now and they have never disappointed me. Yesterday, I phoned in my usual order and was disgusted when I arrived to pick up when I saw that the entire was not wearing their masks correctly and constantly touching their masks while working with people's food. They know me from ordering for year and let me know that they were still working on my order. I then told them that it's the last time I'm ordering from them because no one seems to care about proper mask utilization. The owner's husband then asks me if I've even ever had a covid test in a dismissive manner. I reminded him that I work in television and get tested an average of three times a week, to which he responded, "well good for you, we test a lot here too and we can't be made to wear these "things" all day every day". At that point, I cancelled my order and walked away. It's sad because of the difficulty in finding a place that retains consistent quality for more than six months. I guess I need to find a new spot now. read more

They also do not have water only bottles of water they MAKE you pay for. They give you paper plates instead of normal plates and there is no restroom. I drove about 20 minutes to try this place out because it had such great reviews and they weren't open despite yelp saying they were open. This was on 1/9/21 (Saturday) at 12pm. I called again today 1/10/21 and there is still no response. I won't drive down again until I know for sure they are open. It's a good place for a quick bite but the lady cooking my order of pupusas was coughing all over when she was making them and also touching her mouth and the ingredients. Plus side: If you're looking for authentic, great tasting, and fairly priced Salvadorian food, this is a small joint to go to if you're around the area. Food deserved the 5 stars! Down side: Very small if dinning in. Parking is limited. I suggest take-out! Well this was a pleasant surprise! After driving around Van Nuys and Panorama City we stumbled upon Estella's Restaurant. It's a little hole in the wall with only 4 tables, but this place was on point. After waiting for what seemed like forever, we received our order of pupusas. I come in on a Friday night and see the woman that is cooking eating as well right next to the stove and to top it off she licks her fingers and still continues to cook and sticks her hands into the potatoe mix without washing her hands.
