Not sure where to begin. We have passed by the little country store for years and never give it the time of the day. Boy was I wrong to have done that. On our way home today, we decided to pull into the parking lot. Now that we are here, what do we get? A little of everything, of course. Bacon Cheeseburger - love the burger and everything about it. The bun was perfect for the burger and the toppings were fresh. Crabcake sandwich- not bad. Definitely not the lump crab cake but tasty. My husband really enjoyed it. Spiced Jumbo Shrimp- perfectly cooked. Easy to peel. Delicious. We also picked up some snacks. They also carry beer and wine. Next time I drive by, I won't be turning my nose up to it. Somebody posted on the Nextdoor app that this place had great burgers, which surprised me because most people around the area who know burgers know that Sunshine as the best burgers - not only in this area but in the entire mid-Atlantic if not the east coast. So I had to stop by and try their burger. Sorry, but it was extremely pedestrian. I'd give it a 4 out of 10. I came by again a few months later and tried their steak & cheese sub. It was surprisingly good! Nice tender beef sliced very thin, soft bun, good seasoning, everything you want. I do suspect they may be using steak-ums for the meat, but so what? I love steak-ums! The sign says it's the best sandwich in Etchinson. It's very likely that this is the only sandwich place joint in Etchinson. Is it still good? Yes, even without a town full of other sandwich shops to compare it to. I was craving a sub for no apparent reason while we were on a drive trying to get my crackhead toddler to sleep and ended up here. We parked in the parking lot and the signs told us back door only (that's what she said), so we went into this tiny store, located off a rural Road. The store is straight out of the 60s, sells mostly snacks, alcohol, and snack cakes, but does have a deli. They also have spiced shrimp fried chicken and breakfast. A super nice older lady is at the counter to take your order and we went with a turkey sub and some potato salad. She then shouts the order to what I'm assuming is her husband in the back. The order was prepared in no time flat. The sandwich was actually pretty good with the softest bread. I've had in a while and lots and lots of filling. I don't know how to describe it but honestly, it's like the best homemade sandwich ever. The potato salad was pretty unique and it came with celery, which is new for me. Nice and crunchy. Etchinson doesn't need any other delis, this one is definitely the best. Despite the retro vibes, we did ask if they took Apple Pay and the lady behind the counter responded with yeah baby. If you're in the area, I highly recommend you stop by especially since two chimneys cidery is right in the neighborhood across the street. read more

I see this store as a local stable. Passing by it year after year and finally decided to pay a visit. Very dated feel, slightly run down with all things. They have all the basics you can expect from a country/beer store, BUT ...very limited selections. And with additional hot food items, and tables people can hang around at. There are TV for sports. And owners are friendly. I can definitely see this store more like a locals handout place. read more

I've driven by this place so many times with the sign that says "Best Sandwiches in Etchison" and always thought, may as well see about that, or if the sign just says that because they're the only ones. I finally stopped in when they were open and ordered a crab cake sandwich that came with tartar sauce, lettuce and tomato. I walked around while I waited and they have some chips, candy, and a wide variety of alcohol. It didn't take too long for my sandwich to be ready and it was HOT so I knew they just fried up the crab cake. And it was really solid! It was a tiny bit greasier than I would have preferred, and had a bit too much tartar sauce but I still enjoyed it. I'd definitely head back in for a burger or maybe one of their cold sandwiches - the hero and turkey subs looked solid. read more

Tried to buy a 12 pack of beer earlier today but the man behind the counter was too "busy" talking to another man-eating lunch and totally ignored me. I stood at the counter by the register for 5 minutes and it was clear the man behind the counter saw me, heard me jingle my keys and saw me get out my credit card. I had read the reviews and did not doubt them. I assumed this charming, no-frills spot in the middle of nowhere would serve really good convenience store food. Turned out the quality of their cooking meant something unexpected. They're a gourmet restaurant masquerading as a country store. I can't believe I'm going to write this.... they served me the best fried chicken I have ever eaten. In 49 years. And I'm from Mississippi! I have also spent ten years each in New York City and D.C., and while fried chicken is not a particular obsession, I've had my fair share. For Deep Southerners, there's something about sweltering Sundays that calls for it. Here, the pieces are fresh, plump, and extremely juicy -- not even a nanosecond overcooked. And the crust is thin, crisp, and immaculately seasoned. Meaning, there's just enough of the tastes they've selected, without a hint of that cloying over-spicing that is so typical now. After ordering and waiting the promised 15-20 minutes for our made-to-order chicken to be chicken, I returned to the counter to pick it up, along with our other items. I had meant to order some pulled pork, too, but had forgotten. Out of curiosity, I asked the charming, peppy Asian woman who was staffing the counter and doing some of the cooking where they get their pulled pork. She seemed a little surprised at the question. I think most of their customers are locals who already know their deal. She said, "Oh, we make it here. We make everything. This cocktail sauce with your shrimp? We make. Everything, we make here." Smoking a pig shoulder is one thing, but homemade cocktail sauce? It started sinking in that this might be a different situation than I had thought. And in fact, to our delight, every single item we had ordered for my family of four was not just good, but great. The pound of steamed peel-and-eat shrimp? Delicious. Everyday sides like cole slaw and potato salad? Irrationally FLAWLESS. I actually sat there trying to figure out what in the world they used as the base for the potato salad. It's not mustardy, nor especially sweet. Maybe some olive oil? I can only assume it's some homemade mayo-adjacent sauce. I've never had potato salad quite like it before. But now, all other potato salad is dead to me forever. And I didn't even CARE about potato salad! My wife ordered a very basic chicken salad sandwich with lettuce and tomato on wheat bread. I kid you not, the chicken salad was simple perfection. The chicken in it literally could not have been tastier. I haven't mentioned the ambiance, because there really is none. It's not even an especially quaint or atmospheric country store. But you could probably eat this food on Mars, and all you'd really care about is the taste. Almost everyone gets their food as takeout, but we actually ate at one of their two tables. I'd recommend that, because you want to eat this chicken as soon as possible out of the fryer -- not allowing any chance of the crust losing any crispness, while traveling in a to-go-box. I'm lucky I only live an hour away from them, but I would drive two or three hours to relive this experience -- and next time, we'll probably be sampling almost every item on the menu. Their menu offers fried chicken (all made-to-order), hot and cold sandwiches, and even breakfast options. The hubs and I were in the area, and we ordered some fried chicken, 3 mini cheeseburgers with french fries, a pulled pork BBQ sammie, a coleslaw, a potato salad, and a macaroni salad. The food was so tasty! The fried chicken was so juicy, and the skin was seasoned very well - piping hot, as it was literally made-to-order! The cheeseburgers were so cute - they were definitely slider size, but the patties had a nice grilled taste to them and were topped with the usual ketchup, onions, and pickles. The pulled pork BBQ sammie was so flavorful, and the BBQ sauce had a nice tang to it. The sides were tasty as well! I particularly liked the macaroni salad, as it was cold, the pasta was cooked a perfect al dente, and it was dressed with this yummy dressing that a slight sweetness to it. All had a wonderful homemade taste to it! The staff here are also friendly - kind and welcoming. There really isn't any spots to dine in, but there are a couple of tables outside and you can also just eat in your car! Most seem to take their orders to go. This is an interesting little general store that offers a lot more on the inside than it looks to on the outside. The front is painted white with a single door covered with iron bars. It doesn't look too inviting, heck, you can't even tell if the place is open. I went in the front, but found all the regulars walk in the back (equally uninviting door). Once inside, you see a full convenience store of beer, drinks, snacks and a full service grille offering up hot and cold sandwiches, breakfast, fried chicken and seafood (steamed shrimp, fish sandwich, crab cake, etc.) I've only eaten here once (I got the cheese steak, it was just okay), but the subs being served looked heavy and popular just like the ones deli's are supposed to make. I will definitely stop here again and probably try the Italian Hero or a Turkey sub. There are seats inside, but I like the carryout option to take lunch and sit in a park somewhere and enjoy. For a corner store in a rural setting the food is amazing. Very high quality ingredients. Some of our favorites are the steak sandwich, the Ruban, and the fried chicken. It is what it is. A small good ol' country store complete with a jar of pickled pigs feet on the counter. I stopped on my way home and picked up some fried chicken and potato salad. So good! The chicken was flavorful, crispy, and just the right amount of greasy :) Potato salad was creamy without being too rich. This is a great place to stop for a quick bite or to pick up carry out goods. We tried the Italian cold cut sub and a cheeseburger. Everything was a good price, tasty and of good quality. The service is friendly. Besides sandwiches and subs they also have fried chicken, fried oysters and clams, steamed shrimp, burgers, breakfast items,etc. It's a tiny little historic country store.
