We had a wonderful birthday dinner celebrating my wife at Ethio Kitchen. We are huge fans of Ethiopian food. And the flavors here ar fresh, homey, and delicious. You can tell that every meal is made with love and intention. My personal favorite dish on our platter was the goat (shown in the middle of our plate). It was succulent, stewed to perfection, and so satisfying. A big and special shoutout to Tabi, the owner. She showed us so much love and hospitality. The food is so fresh and flavorful, and has a quality of authenticity and integrity that is wonderful to discover outside of LA's classic Ethiopian dining neighborhood on Fairfax. From the first sip, the Ginger, Cinnamon & Wild Thyme tea soothed my heart and soul. Even better it lowered my blood pressure. After being poured a glass of water, the bottle of water was left on the table. A gesture most appreciated given this writer often drinks a gallon of water per day. A party of twenty was in the next room. The volume was deafening. Would not recommend coming in when there is a big party or when one is in a rush. Put on my patience hat. Fortunately a booth table was available. Ordered the vegetarian combo. It was worth the 45 minute wait. The ?chef ?owner rewarded my patience. She said she usually does not do this but knew I waited a long time. She asked if I liked and wanted more of the Shiro Wat (Chickpea Stew)? By all means yes! She brought out an extra helping. It was very savory & delicious. My taste buds were more than satiated with this nutrient dense meal. It provided a great variety of vegan proteins with good sized portions. The potatoes/carrot chunks, were tender, lightly reminiscent of mild yellow curry. The chopped collard greens, were a nice bright dark green. Sure to contain lots of vitamins. The lentils were medium spicy hot. The salad was my least favorite. Simply because tomatoes are something I dislike. The injera being gluten free was of the highest quality. Yay Ethiopian on the westside!!! Dero Wot - spicy chicken stew with 3 hard boiled eggs. Great flavor but definitely had heat! The chef said we could order it more mild next time since it was a little spicier than we're used to. 4.5 stars. Vegetarian combo - excellent flavors but the misir (lentils) were a little too spicy for the fam that couldn't handle medium spicy. Also the yater kike alicha (peas) was more bland than we are used to. 4 stars. Village Special Pizza - just like Louise's used to make! Actually we were told the Italian chef is still making all the Louise's items so it was just as good as we remembered. Super fresh juicy sausage and perfect pepperoni. 5 stars! Our only complaint would be that the injera was a little cold and sour for our taste and that they charge for extra injera. I would highly recommend ordering dishes separately. We let them combine the dero wat with the veggie combo and so didn't get extra injera for it. We came in around 5 pm and it took about 45 minutes to get our Ethiopian food. Our server was attentive and kind though and the chef came out to check on us too. The space was nicely renovated and looks great for big parties. Delicious Ethiopian food with all the best savory spices and flavors. The injera is made fresh here daily. We ordered the meat combo platter which came with a big portion of beef and chicken enough for two people. Wasn't sure what to expect because the combo of Ethiopian and Italian seemed odd, but it was also appealing because sometimes my daughter really wants pasta and I just don't. We just ordered Ethiopian (meat and veggie combos) on this go-round, however, and kiddo enjoyed it though she found it a bit spicy. I didn't think it was very spicy, however. First time eating Ethiopian cuisine and it's delicious and healthy. This restaurant, the food and the owners are amazing! It's in the prior Louisa's space (some of the prior staff may still work there) but the interior is completely updated. We had beef tibs and bbq pizza (the pizza is delicious). My son wanted Italian. The servings are large. Injera is the most unique utensil/food I've tasted. It's like a sourdough crepe and used to eat the meal. The owners showed us a video how they make it and it's a complicated intense preparation process. Same with multi step and lengthy process to prepare the meals. Many hours of love go into the meal preparation. We also had a mini Ethiopian coffee service. We were shown the raw green beans, then after they were roasted. Finally the coffee was presented in a clay brewing pitcher and poured in a special way so the coffee sludge is kept from the cup. I can't say enough how sweet and sharing the owners are. Truly the salt of the earth people. Ethio is still in its opening period, I'll return many times. One day I want to try the formal traditional Ethiopian coffee service. read more

I usually order the vegetarian combo, but I tried the Awazi Tibs this time, and boy am I happy and full. The amount of garlic and spice is so delicious! I appreciate the option to have the spicy sauce on the side. Their injera was so soft and spongy. I also tried their Tej (honey wine) and ginger tea, both made in-house by the owner, Josef. This is by far, my favorite Ethiopian restaurant, and I have frequent several in Los Angeles and Washington DC. What distinguishes this one beyond the amazing flavors of the food, is that she doesn't cheat. There's no excessive oil, the flavors come from the spices. (which I don't know where she sources but wow) the lentil soup is unbelievable! The meats have been wonderful. I also ordered the mix of vegetarian/vegan combo and it was outstanding. She doesn't use too much while so not only is it delicious but also very healthy and let me tell you. It is the only place in LA. You will find 100% teff Injera. And this is where the gold is. It is so fresh she makes it herself and since it's one of my favorite things (I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy way before that was even a thing in the late 90s) even with the many options available now they are still pretty dirty unless it's a buckwheat bread. The reason I like to have so much is because it's a superpower of nutrition so in addition to being complete comfort food, it nourishes you completely and deeply, and has a lot of nutritional value. In fact, it's considered a super food. Bread and Super food= MY FAVORITE. The problem is it's hard to find 100% teff injera. This is the only place I know in LA. And I know that all the nutrition is preserved in the food because it keeps me full for hours. In fact yesterday, it was my only meal. A small snack in the evening and I was done. On a last note, the ambiance is really nice. Now I haven't been there when it's really crowded, but during the day it is really peaceful and I like sometimes just to sit and work there in addition to my meal. Here, you can order off ethio's menu and also off trattoria-to-go's Italian menu! Everyone was happy! 2. The food is made fresh to order and it's delicious. This new restaurant opened recently in the location where Louise's was for many years on Pico a block east of Overland. I'm a neighbor my house being close by so last weekend I decided to step in and meet the staff and wish them good luck. Well, I didn't expect the warm friendly welcome they instantly showed me. The owner Joseph immediately introduced himself and prompted me to sit down and sample their good, even though I didn't come to there to eat. I gave in and sat down and they served me a dish with an assortment of Ethiopian foods. I was unfamiliar with the various foods but they were all delicious. Interestingly in addition to the Ethiopian menu they also offer an Italian assortment of dishes, a carry over from the old restaurant. In addition to the interesting and delicious food, I was impressed with the ambiance and the hospitality and the welcoming attitude of the staff. Due to all that, and the decoration of the place, it actually felt like visiting abroad! A feeling I did not have since visiting Europe years ago. I definitely recommend visiting them. read more

I've been wanting to try Ethio since Christmas Eve and finally did yesterday. I ordered the Vegetarian Feast, and it was absolutely delicious. I've only had African food once before, so I am no expert on the cuisine, but everything was wonderful. The woman who helped me was incredibly kind and took the time to explain everything, which I really appreciated.
