In a busy downtown area of Birmingham, bustling with construction work, we were able to secure parking and went right in to be seated. They had a 2 breast and 2 side special ($13.25). So I had that with Cole slaw and potato salad. All plates come with white bread. I also got a sweet tea. Service was efficient and accurate. The fried chicken had almost no breading and was crunchy and crispy. Not greasy in the slightest. The Cole slaw was good but I preferred the potato salad (just a preference). Wow! Sure wish they had fried chicken like this by our house! Located in downtown Birmingham, Gus is pretty easy to find. Street parking in the area is plentiful although you may have to walk half a block or more as it is located right next-door to a big brewery that also has a lot of foot traffic. There are no reservations excepted, so be prepared to wait during peak hours although we had no problem sitting right away on a Saturday afternoon. Our server was super pleasant and had everything under control as she pretty much took care of the entire dining room on her own! Teas and soft drinks are readily available; beers are located on the menu, however It wasn't clear as to whether or not they were serving. Regardless, there was plenty of chicken to be had! The dining room is your basic, southern fried chicken joint, super clean! We started with the fried green tomatoes as our appetizer, and actually ended up having a second portion - they were so awesome! Their chicken has got to be some of the best I have had in a long, long, long time. In retrospect, we had the regular chicken which had a nice bit of heat to it, and kind of wish we had tried the spicy version too! You can order combos, by the piece, or in larger batches if you've got the room. They cater and again sure, wish they had one of these by us. There are also specials that are posted on the chalkboard inside the door. The day we were there, they were offering a fried catfish special, and again, wish we had tried some of that too! While this the original location, recognized as one of the top 10 places to get fried chicken in the country, they do now have franchises with over 30 locations. Because of my scathing review I got a private message from Cyler the new manager who was very apologetic about the chicken thing and the terrible service and promised me things have changed. He was so right! I went in and was immediately greeted and seeing my usual table was free I sat down and almost immediately my drink order was taken and filled. I placed my order. Then when my waiter returned to top off my tea he told me he had only been there a couple of weeks so I told him of my last experience, It was late afternoon but the place was filling back up unlike last time. They have blues music playing throughout the dining area and the place was very clean. They also have bar seating in there too. They serve beer and wine to go along with their chicken and tenders. They have the usual sides on their menu such as potato salad, cole slaw, ocra, fries, and mac & cheese. I got the two piece (white meat) dinner with fries and potato salad. It took about 10 minutes for me to get my food and it was so fresh. I was skeptical about their title of "World Famous Fried Chicken", but they made a believer out of me. It was so delicious and flavorful. The fries were very good. I loved the seasoning on them. The potato salad was ok. I have had better. The staff there was very friendly, helpful, attentive and courteous. They were top notch, grade-A. I really enjoyed my meal here. But with great service and delicious food, who wouldn't? I'm going to Gus's for many years and have patronized several of their locations. This was my first visit to the Birmingham store and although Hattie Bs is also nearby overall I prefer Gus's. I ordered the two piece white dinner tonight, but they were out of wings so I substituted with a thigh. As always, the chicken is hot and fresh, dropped into the fryer per order. However, I must say that this was the spiciest Gus's chicken that I've ever eaten yet it was still very good. Fortunately I had some cold sides with their potato salad and coleslaw; also had some baked beans. The lady at the counter was so friendly and helpful, and I was there with my parents who are pretty high risk for Covid so we are still a little extra cautious. They don't have outdoor dining (which it says on Yelp they do), but you are allowed to take your food and eat it at the brewery next door, and the server even brought it out there to us which was great. I got two pieces of dark meat and the chicken was soooo good and juicy. I got a leg and thigh but to be honest I'd get two legs next time because the leg was the absolute best, although both were great. After our meal, we wanted to look at the merchandise, and she was very helpful in bringing out the selection of shirts they had. Food: We ordered the Memphis Special, which came with 2 legs and 2 thighs with sides of beans and coleslaw. We also ordered another Memphis Special with potato salad instead of beans. We've had Gus's at the New Orleans location, and the chicken here was just as good compared to the first time we tried it! We liked how the fried chicken wasn't too bready but still had that desired crispness and crunchiness of the perfect fried chicken. The chicken was also well-seasoned and incredibly juicy! I want to start this review off by saying the food and service were great! My husband and I were leaving Classic 13 Tattoo a couple days ago and decided we would have dinner downtown. When the chicken came out, I was a little surprised it didn't have the thick and crispy looking batter. It looked like the chicken was fried naked. However, that was some goooooood chicken! I literally ate each piece down to nothing but the bone. For my sides, I had potato salad and macaroni and cheese; both were good. There was a large party (at least 15 people) in the restaurant at the same time as us. This caused us to get our food a little slower than probably what is normal. We honestly weren't bothered by it because we were not in any type of a rush.
