From the moment we walked in, the staff was exceptional. The menu was explained perfectly and I was impressed with the gentleman taking our order, he was so polite. Once we sat down, our order was brought to the table and looked delicious. We explained that this was our first visit and the gentleman came back twice to check on us. The chicken wings were huge and very juicy, mild with just enough kick. The cheese grits were delicious with the added bacon and the baked beans...let just say they were the best we have ever had. The Mac and cheese was great and the fries were seasoned perfectly and had the right amount of crunch. The restaurant was very clean and stocked well with to go containers. Five stars for Hattie B's in Birmingham--no shocker there, but wow did they win me over fast. This was our very first visit, and we were in town with brothers from the Prince Hall Lodge, gearing up to march in Selma for the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and the fight for voters' rights. The brothers insisted we had to try Hattie B's... and honestly, I now understand their passion on a spiritual level. I'm a full-blown fan. The chicken was moist, packed with flavor, and downright soul-hugging. The place has a cute storefront, plenty of tables, and yes--it was crowded--but the team kept everything moving with ease. I even wandered through the merch... those chicken shirts almost talked me into taking one home. Bottom line: if I'm ever back in Birmingham--or anywhere a Hattie B's exists--you'll find me at the counter, happily placing my order. And seriously... when are you bringing one to Portland, OR? If you're anywhere near a Hattie B's, you have to stop by! Just a heads-up on the parking: it's a bit tricky, so read the signs carefully. There's a lot right next door that looks like paid parking, but if you use the app, the first hour is actually free! We missed that and parked a few blocks away, but the walk was worth it. The Medium and Mild heat levels were fantastic this time, though I'm definitely leveling up to 'Hot' on my next visit. First time trying Hattie's. The employee that took our order wasn't very friendly but also not exactly rude. I got their new salad. It was so fresh and delicious! The ranch is not the homemade "good" ranch (IYKYK), but still very enjoyable. I got the medium heat index. It was a bit hotter than I expected, but still within the range of heat I can consume. The seating in the restaurant isn't the most comfortable. You have the choice of metal chairs or wooden benches. There is also an outdoor covered patio. I've been eating here since they opened. Most of the time I enjoy my food. They went through a period where the food was salty or they would mix up the sauces (instead of medium, they gave you hot), but recently that has improved. I love spicy/hot food and I love chicken tenders. But the stars here are the sides. The sides are actually really good. From the pimento Mac, to the black eye pea salad, every side here is delicious so you can't miss.. The service is good and if you eat inside, they will bring your food to your table. It's a nice place to eat after work or on date night. I will continue to eat here when I'm in the mood for a little spice in my life. Family came here on a Sunday around 12 noon. There was quite a crowd and I was glad I ordered on the Hattie B's app 20 minutes before we arrived. We found a table and got our water, and in about five minutes we had our fresh meal in a to go paper bag. I got the hot grilled chicken on salad and it was so filling, I only ate half. My husband got the three tender strips with two side and he says the chicken was tender. My son ordered the medium grilled chicken sandwich which he says was juicy and plump. After trying Hattie B's in Nashville, I can confirm that the quality at this location is on par with the original store. Their fried chicken is always bursting with flavor and tender. I had no issues getting street parking close to lunch time. The crinkle cut fries and pimento mac n cheese are probably my favorite sides to order. The Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich has crossed my path a number of times but I never took the opportunity. As chance would have it, The Man and I went to Birmingham where The Son chose Hattie B's. The place was big and dim, clean and oddly empty for a Saturday evening. At the counter, a big open smile greeted the three of us ready to take our order. While looking at all the classic offerings I was having trouble selecting anything fried but to my delight, they had a grilled version of the hot chicken sandwich. Extra pickles, cheese, and crinkle fries rounded out the sandwich well. I didn't realize there was sauce served with the sandwich. I didn't miss it but it was a part of the experience so I can't comment. The men had all sorts of delicious fried chicken pieces and sides. There was a classic hot chicken sandwich along with wings on the table. Service was great, covered patio was lovely, and the food was delicious. It won't be a regular but it will be a repeat. There seemed to be a bit of a mix-up as we were almost given another tables order. We let the server know right away and were given our original order. I did the quarter bird at medium level heat, which includes a side. I should have done the hot heat level and would get that next time. The chicken did seem greasier than my prior experience visiting a Nashville location. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable. The tenders had just the right amount of breading and crunch as well as a great spice level. The Mac and cheese was just cheesy enough and seasoned just right. The fries were great! It's hard to go wrong with fries. Don't forget a beverage, as fried chicken usually makes you thirsty. The service was friendly and hospitable. One thing that's true about the south and Alabama in general is that there's a ton of great places to get a chicken sandwich. But, if you're looking for a flavorful, filling, and excellently cooked Nashville-style hot chicken sandwich in Birmingham, there's no better place than Hattie B's. I should note that I have not been to the original Hattie B's in Nashville, so I'm unable to compare the locations. The photos I've attached here are from two separate visits within a week of each other (I really liked it). During the first I got the chicken sandwich at a "hot" spice level, their last "normal" spice level and excellent in terms of both heat and flavor. During the second visit, I decided to level up to the "damn hot" level, their second-hottest. This was a little hot for an everyday lunch, though still quite good in terms of flavor and overall construction. I would put the sort of heat, for enthusiasts, as akin to a hot sauce made with ghost peppers: sticking to the lips, sweat on the top of your head, a heat that sticks with you for at least 20-30 minutes. Everything was really well cooked (large portions, juicy sandwich, good crust on the fry) and it's plenty of food for a large lunch. I also got the homemade fried pickles which were also enjoyable and came with a side of ranch. Service was excellent, overall. My food came out fast in both instances (and it was busy both times at the lunch hour), and in both instances the person who took my order was kind and helpful in terms of menu items and my desire for overall spice level (including a warning about the damn hot sauce). The place itself has both indoor and outdoor (covered) seating and both locations are both full of energy and good conversation and quiet enough to be able to talk to your party without too much trouble. There are televisions, should you want to watch a game or event, but the vibe of the place is more dedicated to hanging out with your party rather than watching any specific sports program. I have definitely added to my list to visit the original location in Nashville given how much I enjoyed this experience. But, until then, I'm glad I have a location not too far away. We were down in the area and decided to give Hattie B's Hot Chicken a try and was very surprised to see how crowded they were at 3 PM on a Saturday and even more surprised, and delighted on how quickly they got our food out to us. After ordering our food up at the counter, we got our delicious sweet tea and sat down. The atmosphere was joyful and it was nice to see people happy and laughing. Good Heat, But Not Without the Hiccups I was excited to finally try Hattie B's after hearing so much hype about their famous hot chicken. The flavor definitely delivered--the spice levels are no joke, and the "Hot" was the perfect kick without being overpowering. The chicken was crispy and juicy, and the seasoning had that bold, Southern flair that keeps you coming back for more. The sides, especially the pimento mac & cheese and collard greens, were solid. That said, the experience wasn't flawless. The line was long (which I expected), but the service felt a bit rushed and not super friendly. Also, for the price, I expected a little more attention to detail--the chicken on one visit was a bit dry and the portion sizes seemed inconsistent. Overall, Hattie B's is worth trying if you love hot chicken, but go in knowing it's more about the hype and heat than a perfect all-around dining experience. For as long as I've lived in Birmingham and spent so much time in Lakeview, I've never tried Hattie B's until today. I loved the atmosphere of this place. Staff was friendly and our food came out quickly. I ordered the 3 finger plate with the bacon cheddar grits!! I'm a southern girl so my grits have to be good and these definitely didn't disappoint. The tenders were juicy and had good flavor. I opted out of any dry rub but maybe next time I will venture out a little. My friend got the whole wings with a side of greens. I visited these guys AGAIN this past Saturday which was a long time coming since I had not been there in about a year or so and when I tell yall they have not fell off. Everything was literally perfect. The staff was so nice, the restaurant was clean, and of course the food let's talk about that! I ordered the hot chicken chicken fingers mild with fries and loaded grits. First of all the chicken was fried and seasoned perfectly by someone who clearly cares. The fries were crispy and salty I loved them and yall those loaded grits... they were creamy, cheesy, and had freaking bacon in it! Hattie B's Hot Chicken is a great lunch spot for a busy weekend lunch. Hattie B's has reliable and quick food that makes for a perfect grab and go spot when you don't have time for anything else. Most recently, I came to Hattie B's with some of my e-board members for one of my organizations. We did not have to wait in a very long line, however, I did notice that the line did grow longer after we got our food. I ordered a side of coleslaw and pimento cheese mac n cheese. In the past, Hattie B's used to have a menu option of a three side combo, but when I asked them about it, the Hattie B's employee seemed very confused. While it is unfortunate, I was still able to get my two sides and a drink for a pretty reasonable price. In addition to this, the Hattie B's on 7th Ave accepts Blazer Bucks, which is a great option for students who have Blazer Bucks in their account! The food arrived within minutes and the mac n cheese was very warm. My board and I were working on a craft for an upcoming tabling event, so we did sit around at the table for a bit working on it, so we definitely had the workers coming up to us more than a few times asking if we needed anything. They were still very kind, but it was clear they wanted us to give up our table if we were no longer eating, which was completely understandable as it had gotten pretty busy! As it got busier, it definitely did get louder in the restaurant, so if you come here with someone who is hard of hearing, I would recommend sitting outside as it may be quieter.
