    So good! Cevapi

The bread is just amazing! It's so yeasty and warm. We had a sampler platter and traditional sausage (cevapti?). The sausage is good but a bit gelatinous; not sure if it's supposed to be that way or if it was just this version. These little breakfast sausage looking things came on a huge bun. I have no idea if one is supposed to pick it up to eat it (not sure how?), but I tore off pieces of bread to make my own little sausage/bread wraps. We went on a blizzardy Saturday night and were the only people there. Very nice service. A bit dark but I like that it's kind of a hole in the wall. A hidden gem.

The latest on our tour of all places Eastern European in the area, Euro Grill had the best food. We found the building itself to be kind of stereotypical of the cuisine's restaurants in this area. Looks like it's closed when you drive up, lights all off inside, nobody inside but staff and only one of them seems to speak any english. They always seem like nightclubs just waiting for the sun to go down and the track suits to pour in. Hey, if that's authentic, great! Once you push past the awkward vibe of seemingly coming in after hours to a foreign country, the food was something special. Particularly the bread. We ordered the Cheese Burek, which I would describe as essentially gourmet fried stuffed cheesy bread. The side of puffy bread that came with our two dinners was also fantastic, hot and fresh, with a crusty outside and moist doughy middle. We also had the meat platter to get a sampling of the meats, and flavor-wise they were all good as well. A little well done for my taste but I sense that is the style of the region perhaps, as it's been common across the restaurants we've been to. The biggest letdown was the chicken, flat as a pancake and dry as jerky. The bread was good enough for me to forgive the sad desiccated piece of chicken. The only other negative I'd point out is that we asked for 'just' water and were given bottles of water - at a charge of 1.00 a piece - without any confirmation. This is one of two restaurants I've been in my life (the other was a local food truck brick and mortar offshoot) where bottled water was the only option. No bueno. Euro Grill was a great value and a filling meal with memorable breads - and with the least awkward experience of the 4 local Eastern European restaurants we know of, I sense we'll be back.

Euro Grill is all grown up! They used to be located at another small shopping strip in Des Plaines, but a couple years ago they closed down (as did Chef's Corner in Naperville) and I couldn't get Cevapi in the Suburbs. I had to trek it all the way to Chicago. And you're probably thinking, "Tough shit," right? My Grandpa's response to saying meat was overcooked and tough was always, "It's tougher where there isn't any." Well, for about a year there wasn't a single Cevapi place within 20 miles of home. Let's just say that was a very dark time for me. Euro Grill is now located in Rayyan Plaza III, which is a small shopping center on the east side of Elmhurst Rd between Algonquin & Dempster. If you blink you might miss it, but I hope you find it. It's definitely worth it. Everything has been upgraded. I liked the old place because it was small and cozy; however, the newer place is bright and open. They have tons of seating now and the menu has expanded a little bit. The food could be described as "Balkan's Best." They have Cevapi, which are seasoned minced meat sausages served atop a pillowy Lepinja (fluffy Balkan pita-style bread) with a side of diced onions, tomatoes and Kajmak (a buttery sour spread). You can also get Pljeskavica (Balkan-style Burger) or a stuffed Pljeskavica with cheese. If you can't make up your mind then go with Mijesano Meso (Mixed Meat). If you want something a little less messy then you can grab yourself a meat-filled Burek (filo dough stuffed with spiced ground beef). Maybe meat isn't your thing, but have no fear! The Cheese Burek will do the trick. You also have Pasulj (Bean Soup) or Sopska Salata (onion, tomato, cucumber salad) topped with Feta cheese. Another option is the Cabbage Salad or fresh French Fries (ask them to top the fries with Feta!). As you can see, it's not an extensive menu, but it's really all you need to know when it comes to basic Balkan dishes. If you can believe it, the old menu was much smaller. The prices are decent and you can lose a few hours there sipping Turkish coffee, beer or Fructal fruit juices. I highly recommend finishing the meal off with a Baklava or Tulumba (honey-soaked baked treat).

The server I had was very nice, and made a great suggestion for one of the daily specials-pork tenderloin with Kaymac. I've never heard of that before (which was the reason to visit Balkan Taste-a new adventure in food!) kaymac was described as the top of the milk, and it reminded me of butter. But better! He also brought me a side of kaymac to have with my bread, and I knew I'd love the pork dish. It was indeed a home run, the sauce was super tasty. Also had beet salad , and a cream puff for dessert. I inhaled the cream puff too!!! I enjoyed the authentic/family atmosphere, and will surely be back. I'm picky about my food (I LOVE the "good stuff") everything I had tonight was outstanding. This spot gets everything right-…read moreplenty of parking, fast and friendly service, elegant decor, big portions, and delicious food! Admittedly, I'm not an expert in Polish cuisine, but this restaurant has greatly increased my interest in trying more! Outside of the food, there's many things to like about this restaurant. The decor is nice and modern, and the presentation of the food is good for this price point. The restaurant is comfortable and good for sitting in for a while, with service that is extremely friendly. This reminds me of another excellent restaurant A Thousand Tales, where we are treated like family on every visit - even on the first visit there. It's very clear how proud the staff is of the restaurant and the food they serve, and they take the effort to explain the food to the diner. Fortunately, the food is just as good as it looks. I've been looking for food that's prepared from scratch with high quality ingredients that aren't reliant on heavy sauces, and this really hit the mark. Everything from the bread with herbs and butter to the delicious soups was prepared fresh and tasty. Similarly, with the chips and salsa - it was clear that this was homemade with a great flavor to match. Unsurprisingly, the pastor tacos were full of flavor, with a generous amount of slightly fatty pork, fresh cilantro, and onions served with fresh lime. These were some of the best tacos I've had in recent memory from any restaurant, and I am definitely a huge fan of the preparation (the sweetness of the pineapple juice perfectly matched the bold mix of spices). The sampler platter was also a great option which gave a mix of many different items. The goulash was delicious with the mushrooms and sautee pepper. The pierogis had the perfect firmness and delicious filling. The sausage was flavorful and juicy. The potato pancakes could've been a bit more crisp but the flavor was still good. The breaded pork schnitzel was tasty and had just the right amount of breading. Overall, definitely recommend going to this spot for anything that's looking for high quality made from scratch food at a reasonable price point. The great service and elegant interior is a bonus on top of a very enjoyable and filling meal.

Don't refuse the big portions of pita bread, when offered; the pita was warm and fluffy. The Serbian salad of tomatoes, onions, green peppers, and mild cheese , all ingredients marinated in a mild, clear sauce , was a meal that can be shared by two ( or more). Street parking galore. It was a sleepy evening. There was only one party (of four) when we went in. I have to admit, I was skeptical. But the aroma wafting from the kitchen ... My friend and I shared everything. Generous portions. I stuffed myself beyond what I should have. But I couldn't get enough of the grilled meats and roasted vegetables. I could have eaten nothing but the lepinja and kajmak but putting them altogether was so tasty that I just kept eating and eating. The one woman show - she was awesome. Not much English but wasn't needed. She was so pleasant and welcoming and the barrier wasn't an issue - at least for me. As she was a one person team FOH, there were times I wondered if she was also in the back cooking as she would be gone here and there but would show up right when she was needed. I don't know of many Serbian restaurants here in SoCal but when I do (and remember that is), I'll definitely go and see if it compares. I just know it was an excellent meal on my last evening in Chicago for my summer road trip.
