The food is delicious! We ordered the potato cheese pierogis for our appetizer. You get 10 pierogis so it was plenty for us to share. They were perfect and better than other places I've tried. I ordered the white borsch soup and the stuffed cabbage with mushroom sauce and dumplings. This was my first time trying both of these dishes. The white borsch soup was so savory and I really enjoyed the combination of sausage and hard boiled eggs with the broth. The stuffed cabbage was better than I expected, and that mushroom sauce was so good! My friend ordered it with the tomato sauce and that was very good as well. The dumplings were amazing paired with the sauce. The atmosphere is super cozy! I loved it. It feels like you're in a log cabin. Great ambiance. Service was excellent. Our waitress was very sweet and friendly. Overall, I would highly recommend this polish restaurant! It's been located in the same spot in Wood Dale as long as I can remember, and I'm glad I finally gave it a try. I don't know that much about Polish food... but I do know this: U Gazdy serves some of the best I've ever had, and I'm married into a Polish family, so I don't say that lightly. The place itself is incredibly inviting, all warm wood, cozy corners, very Bavarian lodge meets Polish soul. It was busy and buzzing, and Polish was the main language at nearly every table... except ours, which was happily bilingual in Spanish. It felt authentic, lively, and full of life. The service was friendly, fun, and patient, guiding us through the menu with enthusiasm. We shared a feast: pelmeni, Highlander-style pork shank, kiszka, Real Man's Meatballs (Męskie Klopsiki), and other delicious goodness that made the table groan (in the best way). Every dish was hearty, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. It was also my birthday, and just when I thought the night couldn't get better, the staff surprised me with dessert and sang Happy Birthday in Polish. I loved it. Big smiles, full heart. I am not a Polish food expert but I know one thing, all the food we ate was delicious! U Gazdy is a quaint cozy restaurant. I like the rustic look and big comfortable chairs. My hubby and I sat at the bar. Our server was very nice and she makes good martinis! I had the U Gazdy martini and yes another one, the cucumber martini. Both martinis were awesome! You get homemade bread and Smalec. Some of the best I have had. We started with the dumpling appetizer. Soft dumplings with a meat filling covered in a light sauce. So good and you get a bunch of dumplings. The sauerkraut soup with smoked rib is deep in flavor and tasty. The stuffed cabbage rolls were amazing. The potato pancake with beef goulash was really good. For sure order the dumplings instead of mashed potatoes. So airy and light, yum! All the food we had is definitely homemade. Fresh and flavorful. We'll, I finally went and was extremely disappointed. The establishment is very nice, clean and in the Highlander style. Warm bread was served and we ordered appetizers. Pierogis were good but the zucchini patties were flat and rubbery. The meals looked good but we're definitely not prepared fresh. The meats, both pounded steak and rolled chicken were as hard as rock....definitely not prepared that day. The pork shank was spectacular but the bone came out effortlessly (which should be good) but was also dry. I'm a bone picker, and the bone was DRY. The sauerkraut was so overcooked (or old) that it was brown and melted away. We left a good portion of our meals on the table or threw away the carry outs. My husband wanted Polish food and he came up with this place and why wouldn't I want to eat here with a maiden name of Gazda? Dorota our server was working her first night and explained she didn't speak English well, she did just fine and she was very nice. I got stuffed cabbage with mushroom gravy and dumplings ( an up charge of $2) and he got a stuffed potato pancake (we can't remember the name of the dish) it came with the Polish salad that consisted of beets, cucumbers and carrots, all very tasty. They started us off with bread and a cup of spread, we have no idea what it was but it was heavenly, we also were offered a choice of soups. My family and I recently partook in the Polish St Nick's celebration which has become a tradition for us and I decided I had to finally write a review. We had a reservation for 11 and were seated quickly on arrival. Our food was delivered quickly, fresh, and piping hot. The restaurant owner goes out of her way to make you feel like family when you're here. My family originates from Poland and the traditional dishes like flaki and the roasted duck are phenomenal. For the price charged and labor required, we opt to come here because it's just as good as ours but without the work. The Santa and Mrs Claus are consistent from year to year which really helps keep the magic of Christmas alive for our children. We'll be back as long as U Gazdy hosts this event. We order from U Gazdy every week and you should consider doing the same thing! You most certainly will be glad that you did! read more

Wish they had more sausages on the menu. Like more options for different ones. But it's super authentic and the food they did have (potato pancakes and goulash) was amazing. I was with my nephew and my wife on a weekday. My nephew wanted to stay local. He also had a taste for Polish food. He invited us to go to a local favorite. Who am I to turn down an invitation to try a new place out. This leads me to my next location that I will review. U Gazdy in Wood Dale. U Gazdy is located right off of the busy Irving Park Road. If you blink, you will miss it. It is also right next to another Polish deli called Helens. The moment that you walk in, you are in a full wood cabin. Everything in the entire restaurant is wood from a table, the chairs, the walls, the ceiling. There is a bar immediately to your left as soon as you walk in it is a small bar. The night that we chose to go here, it was somewhat busy. Since this restaurant is built like a fully sealed cabin, ices and laughter echo off the walls it could be hard to have a conversation if other parties are being somewhat loud. We chose to sit all the way in the back, trying to get as far away from other patrons so that I can fully enjoy the experience and take some pictures of food. Our waitress greeted us with some waters. We put in an order for pierogies and also potato pancakes. My nephew, put it in order for himself of beef tartar, and also smoked salmon rolls. The appetizers came out within 15 minutes. We went half-and-half with the pierogies half meat half sauerkraut. The pierogies definitely tasted fresh and you could tell that they were homemade but were lacking with some flavor. I actually like the frozen pierogies better right next-door at Helens Deli. The potato pancake cakes were crispy and delicious, but we're very greasy luckily it did not take away from the flavor. They were very tasty. My Nephew said his smoked salmon was delicious and his beef tar-tar was good. This is where some of experience went downhill. Our server completely disappeared. We saw her overly accommodating two tables right by the kitchen. She was there for 85% of the time that we were sitting at our table. I had to pour some water into my wife's glass because she ran out and was sitting there for 25 minutes waiting for water. Finally, after about a half an hour one of the workers noticed that we were sitting there with empty drinks and waiting for quite some time. They call over server and apologize or anything just said are you ready to put in your order for food? I said yes but first, can we please get some water and refills on our drinks? She brought over our beverages we put in our orders I and my wife both ordered the same thing the stuffed cabbage rolls with mashed potatoes. My nephew ordered their famous pork shank. The food came out relatively quick. I took a bite of my cabbage rolls and they were out of this world. I am used to getting cabbage rolls with a tomato sauce on top today I had the option of putting a mushroom gravy. It was out of this world delicious. The mashed potatoes were an afterthought. I did not even care that they were on the plate. My nephew thoroughly enjoyed his tender pork shank, which came sizzling on a skillet. The only complaint he had was 50% of the shank was tender meat. The other 50% was pure fat. Overall, this experience would've been a solid eight out of 10, but the service was really bad. There were two waitresses working about six tables, including us and they just were overwhelmed. When I left, I saw that our waitress was also behind the bar talking to guests. so I do not know if she was busy or she would just was hanging out with regulars. I want to add one other thing also I noticed that this is the first restaurant that did not have a Polish plate for dinner. When I initially came in, I wanted to get a little taste of everything and 99% of all Polish restaurants have something like this, I was informed by our waitress they only offer that for lunch, I think that is absolutely ridiculous and I don't understand why it's only for lunch. From what I understand it is a loaded plate with Paul sausage and pierogies that sounds very heavy for a lunch. They should put that on the dinner menu. A MUST try if you're in Chicago. You know U Gazdy is good Polish food when you enter and everyone is speaking Polish, including the waitress. U Gazdy is a traditional Polish half bar-restaurant with a homely feel, loads of wooden decor and generous food sizes. I was recommended this spot by a Chi-town friend and it definitely feels like an authentic Polish experience here. Now I don't know any other Polish foods other than the Kielbasa, but being adventurous I wanted to try the Pork Shank. It came with a very delicious rosol (chicken soup), complimentary bread with a dip that I think is called smalec, a pork-based buttery/creamy dip with onions, bacon bits, and garlic. I also ordered a Polish IPA. Don't know the exact one but was pretty good. Pork Shank - 5/5 Wow. Meat is so soft and tender. It is bone in and I was eating this down to the bone. It is VERY large and fills you up pretty hard. Rosol - 5/5 Amazing Chicken noodle soup. You have peeled veggies, chicken bits, fresh parsley, and starchless noodles to fill you up fast. It wasn't overpowering with salt that I normally expect with regular soup. More soupy than creamy. It is PERFECT for cold days like the one today and I was surprised something so simple can be delicious. Smalec- 5/5 I actually like this thing the most. The bread and the pork butter was perfect. Fresh and crispy bread complimented the gooey spread really, really well. Their menu is pretty expansive so there's more than what I listed. Duck, Goulash, rabbit, they have a LOT of meat options. Ok, first things first. The food was outstanding. Delicious, fresh, and generous portions. The service was good, not great. There were a number of workers walking around in hooded sweatshirts and yoga pants. We weren't sure if they worked there, or if they were customers. A uniform or smock of some kind would have cleared that right up. It's a very small place, kind of log cabin feel. The main reason for 3 stars, is that we called earlier in the week to make a 5pm reservation for 2 people. We specifically told the person who answered the phone that it was a special occasion (birthday). When we arrived exactly at 5pm, there was no one at the host stand, so we waited- no problem. There were a few open tables so we didn't think anything of it. A bartender finally came out from behind the bar and was ready to turn us away, but when we told him we had a reservation, he flagged down one of the sweatshirt girls and she pointed to a very small high top table just inside the front door. It was well below zero outside and every time the door opened we were frozen. We politely asked to be reseated, but the sweatshirt girl said we couldn't move because we were a party of 2. The available tables were for 4. Our table was barely 12 inches across. We were there for about 70 minutes total and the open tables were open the whole time. And, as we were finished, another party of 2 came in with no reservation and was seated at one of the tables for four. Really disappointing to have to celebrate a special birthday crammed at a tiny table in front of the door. read more

I searched for authentic Polish food near the airport on our way out of town. Thank goodness I chose this place-it was AMAZING! Very old school authentic Polish feel good food. We had the beef stroganoff with potato pancakes, and the Polish Plate w/ a cabbage roll smothered in mushroom gravy, Polish sausage, pierogis, and potato pancakes as well. Like walking into a lodge. Lots of wood. Avoid the bench seating. Extremely uncomfortable. We had a relatively large party. All food came out except for one person's order. Everyone else was just about done by the time that person's food came out. We went out to have dinner together not with one person watching the others while waiting. No reason was given, just barely a half hearted apology. Nothing was taken off the bill. Food was just ok, not very flavorful. Service was spotty. This is a rating of the restaurant's vegetarian options. There aren't a lot, but there is an entire section on the menu, which is astonishing for a Polish restaurant. I haven't seen this many choices since a vegetarian group took over a Polish restaurant for a special party. Options include zucchini pancakes; potato pancakes; a pancake with mushroom gravy; a Polish salad; or some type of grilled cheese with cranberry marmalade. There are also two vegetarian types of pierogi: mushroom/cheese and sauerkraut/mushroom. Vegans might have three options if you skip the sour cream/cheese. The staff are perhaps less familiar with the vegetarian options; I called and was told "oh, we'll have our vegetarian take your order" - she took good care of me but did propose a salmon dish and I think a turkey one. The Polish salad was disappointing: it's bland, drenched in sour cream, with iceberg lettuce, chopped egg and radish, topped with cucumber slices. It would benefit from more chives, or maybe some pickled vegetables or Bacos. I was pleased with my other choices, notably the pierogi and the zucchini pancakes. The pancake with gravy (and maybe 1-2 T of melted cheese) was unremarkable, a bit chewy and greasy. It came with tiny portions of "Polish vegetable salad" - finely chopped beets, finely grated carrots, and finely chopped cabbage in slightly different vinegar based dressing. I liked the cabbage the best. This comes with a pint of gravy with big slices of mushroom; mild but with a slight peppery finish. I'm trusting the staff that it's actually veg. The highlights: I got the sauerkraut mushroom pierogi at the staff's recommendation. They're excellent; boiled rather than baked, with a great balance between the mushroom/sauerkraut, with tender pasta and minimal greasiness. My only complaint: the sour cream was a bit stingy. The zucchini pancakes had a lovely soft texture, not tough or greasy at all, and came with enough sour cream (the menu says "creamy garlic sauce") that I'll be finishing my pierogi with them. I'm not a huge zucchini fan but these were great and I'll get them again. I can't tell you much about dine-in since I got takeout; it was about 4pm on a Friday and my order was ready in 20 minutes. The exterior / interior has a cute hunter's lodge vibe, and I imagine dine-in would be nice. read more
