My car broke down and was towed to Cary Car Care after being recommended by GEICO. I was initially…read moretold the diagnostic fee would be $130, but ended up being charged $176. Later that evening, they called with a repair estimate of $2,156 to replace the radiator fan, thermostat, and tires, plus $309 just to refill the antifreeze. When I called to ask about alternatives, they only reduced the price by $20. That felt excessive, so I decided to get a second opinion. I ended up going to NC Complete Auto Care, where the radiator fan was replaced for $881. They didn't charge for refilling the antifreeze and said the thermostat wasn't an issue and did not need to be replaced. They also let me know I could safely wait on the tires for a couple more months. I appreciated the transparency and will be taking my business there from now on. I can't recommend Cary Car Care based on my experience.

No call or text Wednesday 10/23/24 so I called at the end of the day and was told they hadn't started working on the car yet but I was in the queue for the work to be done in the morning. I called today Thursday 10/24/24 and they still hadn't touched the car! And that's when the mechanic told me the appt. was for the 30th. I realize it was my mistake on the scheduling but why didn't the check in lady tell me I had the day wrong? And why didn't someone notice yesterday when the car was sitting there all day? And why did they say the car was in queue to be worked on in the morning? I'm on my way out of town for a family emergency and this messed me up so badly. I've been calling all over to see if I could get a rush job on the work. Really terrible service and I will never go back here or recommend them. Update: I appreciate the businesses response but there was another aspect of this situation that bothered me. When I realize the date mistake I asked the guy who answered the phone if they could squeeze me in. He said: if someone who has an appointment doesn't show up or cancels we can get you in. But I can't make any guarantees. I kind of expected that he'd try to see if he could accommodate me but he just said sorry...can't do anything. And I would feel differently if he had at least shown some empathy.

What a freakin nightmare. I asked for them to add an auxiliary transmission cooler, they charge me…read morefor the auxiliary transmission cooler, and I paid for it. I looked under the hood and couldn't see where it would be, so I went back. The front desk guy said they definitely installed the cooler, and claimed it was between the AC coils and radiator, and even pointed at some coolant lines under the van claiming they were them. Then some older guy came out (probably a manager) and said they didn't install an auxiliary transmission cooler, because it didn't need it. I told him I specifically requested and paid for it. I don't know why you would tell someone who requested an upgrade, and paid for an upgrade, and was told the upgrade was done, that he didn't need the upgrade. And a quick Google search shows that for vans that tow, auxiliary transmission coolers are a worthwhile upgrade, and in fact came factory with the tow package in earlier years of the van. He then went back to his office and hid. No "oh my bad, I didn't know you requested it", just a bizarrely hostile exchange where he told me flatly I didn't need the thing I requested and paid for. Then the front desk guy was doubling down and claimed that it had one already. He started taking the shroud off to prove it but then claimed one of the bolts was just spinning (they were all fine, I removed it later at home). He then went to process the refund, where he tried to refund less than the part cost of the cooler (not even including the labor). I insisted I get labor refunded, where he accused me of being hostile (after being lied to repeatedly..) He then claimed he did the refund, but instead he charged me ANOTHER $430. I went back in a week later after I found the fraud on my credit card statement, but would not fix it because it was 15 minutes from closing (again, being accusatory for coming in when I could - apparently they expect their customers schedule to revolve around their fraud?) Finally the next Monday they refunded the $430 extra they charged me, but they still owe me for charging me to install a transmission cooler they never installed. So what should have been a relatively simple transaction has been repeat visits, gaslighting, scamming, etc. I'm now not confident it even needed a new transmission. Please take your vehicle somewhere else unless one of your hobbies is visiting auto repair places repeatedly. Update: those liars still haven't processed the refund a week after saying they were doing it. Also I paid for the brakes as another line item, saying they applied those funds to that is a lie. And I explicitly asked for the transmission cooler. The thing about it "not being needed" is just outright wrong - GMC Savanas regularly towing 10k lbs through the mountains in the summer absolutely should have transmission coolers.

In fact, Happy Japs was mentioned to me by a carpooling coworker's hubby, and after trying to get a reasonable quote from several local Japanese car specialists for installing a sport suspension kit and upgraded brake pads, I went to Happy Japs for some related work. When he and his mechanic saw the kit, as well as the other parts I was installing, he told me he could not only do it, do it economically, but "we WANT to do this for you." See, performance stuff is right up their alley, which I hadn't expected. I was struck by his candor, and we did the whole shebang that morning. The owner, Rex Deffenbaugh, is a long-time racer and regional organizer for the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). The office is not fancy, but it is filled with years and years of racing photos, trophies, knick knacks. These guys take their car enthusiasm seriously. Don't expect a tidy, sterile operation, there are other Japanese car specialist around who can offer you a fashionable waiting room and complimentary espresso -- this is a working shop, and the atmosphere is IMHO a throwback to the old days when mechanics' shops were about the cars, not about impressing the clients and hiding the grease stains. Now, since taking my Euro Accord to Rex, I've joined the SCCA and been to a race at his invitation. I take my car on the track, where it stretches its legs (and pulleys, and cams, and brake horsepower) and makes me proud. I've been to the local chapter meetings, and met a fine group of folks associated with the amateur racing world. So there's the bias ... I have known Rex a few months, consider him a trusted acquaintance verging on friend, so OF COURSE I wouldn't anything but a great Yelp. But if you have a classic Datsun/Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Mazda, or maybe a newer one, Happy Japs is a small locally-owned garage you could entrust it to.

I stopped on the exit to check the oil levels and hopefully add a little oil in order to get back on the road, but the engine was making a loud ticking noise. There was smoke coming from the engine bay and oil sprayed all the way up the back window of the car. That's when I decided that it was best to leave it there and have it towed to the nearest automotive shop. Thankfully, JT&AS was no more than 7 miles away from where I was stranded. Not only was I in the right place at the right time, but JT&AS is a shop that I'll begin going to regardless of the other shops that are closer to my home in Raleigh. The service was impeccable. Honest, timely and thorough are only a few ways to describe JT&AS. If you're ever in the area, or better yet, just make the drive to go to JT&AS because you won't be disappointed.
