We had the strangest and a very disappointing dinner here on a not busy at all Wednesday evening. The food was meh but edible. The service on the other hand was terrible. I came with my friend for dinner. We ordered Lahmacun and a mixed grill. The Lahmacun was a little bland. Not like others I have had elsewhere. It was very skimpy on the meat and as a result lacked flavor. We had to bomb it with salt and the lemon to make it taste like anything. The side fixing of lettuce with tomato was a fail because the tomato had a rotten spot right where it was sliced. Not sure how they could have failed to notice that when they sliced it and fanned it out. We had to ask for a replacement tomato The mixed grill was a bit better. The meat was tender and tasty. I can't complain about that. What was horrendous and the reason despite the okay food that we will not return is the service. To be clear there were literally only two tables of customers in the restaurant. When we arrived there was a lone woman sitting at one other table eating. And then us. After she left another group entered to sit at a table. It was then that table and us for the rest of the evening. A waitress came and took our order. She brought us the bread. We asked her to bring us some olive oil please. She said OK I'll be right back. She never came back. Ever. She went to the side of the restaurant and was playing on her phone. Then another gentleman brought us our food. We asked him can we get some olive oil, please. He finally brought it. Then he product food and disappeared, and we never saw him again. Well, to be clear, we saw him sitting on the side playing on his phone too. But we never saw him come to our table again. We waited for the check and we waited and we waited. Finally, my girlfriend got up and walked over to them and said can we get the check please. We had to laugh because she stood waiting for it and the woman who never returned with the olive oil said you can sit down I'll bring it to you. The irony was not lost on us and I laughed inside. This time she did return. The fact, though that we needed to go literally hunt down the servers in a completely empty Restaurant is major fail. read more

We were looking for a quick (but not fast-food quick) place to eat before heading over to the new Paint & Sip studio in Tenafly (we had about an hour to spare, and as everyone from Bergen county knows the lines are massively long on Friday night if you wanna go anywhere for a nice dinner). The Europe Cafe & Grill is conveniently located on the same street as the Paint & Sip studio and there wasn't a wait so we decided to try it. It's a cute, small, modern cafe with several table/booth combos. We were pleasantly greeted. Got the grape leaves for an appetizer which were good, not the best I've had but not the worst. We also got "zucchini pancakes" which were OK- not much flavor. I got a salad with grilled shrimp for dinner. The shrimp was delish (but the salad didn't consist of much. It was spinach, tomato, and cucumbers, for $20?? Uh, I can go to any diner and get a badass delicious salad with all the works AND soup for under $20..) but whatev. My BF got a "PIDE" which is similar to a flatbread pizza (it was pretty much pizza dough with spinach and cheese inside). Nothing special. They have some healthy options here though. We sat inside; however, there is outdoor seating. Fresh bread & olive oil (with real olives) is brought to the table. We ordered some falafel to start. They were delish! Not dry at all. It's hard to find good falafel. I had the chicken shish. It's probably going to be my new go-to. My bf had the grilled shrimp pasta. He said it needed more sauce but still liked it. We ordered the kibbeh, and he ate all 3 so fast. Basically, it was good. For dessert we had Turkish coffee. It's a strong espresso that comes out in this cute tin (see photos). It was adorable. The chicken was cooked perfectly and had the perfect amount of seasoning. Their homemade hummus was creamy and completely satisfying. Favorite Mediterranean restaurant close to home. Jumbo shrimp: lots of flavor. The shrimp was juicy and grilled perfectly. Loved the variety of bell peppers and onions on the skewers too. Tomato cheese and basil pide: the weakest part of the meal. The bread was soggy, and the tomato, cheese and basil kept falling all over the place. Lamb shank: STAR OF THE SHOW. The lamb shank never disappoints. The hearty lamb leg was bursting with flavor and very tender. The dish included a side salad and some roasted potatoes. The sauce tied everything together. This is our 8th time coming here and the food only gets better. The ambiance is low key and very family oriented. The owner is always there to greet you and since we have be come a regular, they already know what we love to eat (sarma, tiny lamb dumplings). Every time we come here the food surpasses my expectations!!!! the lamb is succulent and the I love the large mixed appetizer. Also the Pide is warm and the olive oil to dip in is great quality, not that cheap stuff. EC & G is an amazing little Turkish/Middle Eastern restaurant, and a North Jersey gem! I grew up in this area in the 70's/80's, and it blows my mind to see all the ethnic variety and fare that has arisen in Bergen County as of late. This has become my favorite place to go with my mom when i'm in the area visiting her. For starters, the red lentil soup is amazing, with just the right amount of spices and 'kick'. The stuffed grape leaves and bean pilaki, mouth watering as well. One of my favorites is the chicken pide flatbread, topped with shredded, melted feta cheese - served with some kind of tomato based dipping sauce, and bursting with flavor! In fact, had you not seasoned it at all it would have had more flavor than what was in front of me. I have no clue how they removed the flavor from it. The mix grill had a similar theme. The service at Europe Cafe & Grill isn't great, but their food is delicious which is why I keep going back. At my most recent visit the older gentleman was grumpy and tried to seat us at a table with rice spilled underneath it (it was not cleaned up the entire time we were there) the younger gentleman sat at the register on his cell phone, but the lady was polite and answered all my questions informatively. After all these years of getting dinner for take out, I recently found out from a friend that they have lunch specials and so we went. Like expected, it has smaller portions than dinner, but still a lot of food and definitely worth your time and money. For $13 you get a generous three course meal consisting of a starter (we both got their Sheppard's Salad), appetizer (we got the Hummus and Babaganoush), and a main course (we ordered the Chicken Shish and the Okra Casserole with Lamb). Their Sheppard's Salad is always delicious and I love eating it with the bread that is baked in house and comes steaming hot to your table. The Hummus was creamy and smooth and the Babaganoush was smokey and fluffy and amazing. Both tasted great alone, but were even better spread on their bread! Their Chicken Shish was good, but my friend and I both agreed that their Lamb Shish is much better as it is very tender, juicy, and grilling it gets rid of the gamey taste. This was our first time trying their Okra Casserole, and while it tasted fine, we wouldn't order it again as their other entree options are just so much tastier, and the lamb because it was stewed in the tomato sauce had a strong gamey taste.
