With only a few sparse tables, Kebabci West seems like more of a takeout spot, but my friends and I had a fantastic meal nonetheless. This is clearly a family run business, with mom and dad in the kitchen, and their son running front of the house. The service was very good and efficient. They have an excellent lunch special that runs everyday until 3pm. You have a large selection of entrees that come with either lentil soup or shepherd salad. Both were generous and delicious. My friend had Kofte Kebab which came over rice, bulgar, and salad. The Kebabs were juicy, flavorful, and succulent. I had the Stuffed Cabbage. There were three sizable pieces with a side of yoghurt. Smothered in a savory tomato sauce, the Stuffed Cabbage was fantastic. Our other friend had the Kibbeh appetizer, which came with two large pieces. She raved about it. We shared an order of Kanfe for dessert which was lovely. Not overly sweet, crunchy, and delicious. Kebabci West feels like you are eating in someone's home. This is cooking from the heart. So I called ahead and ordered a couple gyro wraps from this place. I get there, pick up the food, and immediately notice the meat is completely different from what I ordered. Thinking it was just a mix-up, I called them back to let them know. Instead of checking the order or trying to fix it, this angry old man who runs the place immediately starts arguing with me, insisting I never ordered gyro wraps in the first place. Meanwhile I'm literally staring at the receipt, and it clearly says gyro wrap on it. Dude was so committed to being right that he'd rather argue with me than just admit they made the wrong order. I honestly cannot believe how disrespectful and hostile the manager is at this place. Yes, the food is very good -- but after the way I was treated, I will never order from here again. Two weeks ago, our office placed a catering order. The delivery driver did not include a receipt. I didn't realize it at the time and only noticed when I was preparing my expense report. Since I had the exact date and amount from my credit card statement, I called simply to request a copy of the receipt. A completely reasonable request. Instead of helping, the manager immediately went on the defensive and started raising his voice at me over the phone. He insisted that a receipt is always included and claimed there was no transaction for the amount I gave him -- essentially accusing me of lying. I have never been spoken to so rudely by someone in a management position. The tone, the attitude, the complete lack of professionalism were shocking. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable. I wasn't asking for money back. I just needed documentation for an order we actually placed. The way he handled it was aggressive, dismissive, and incredibly disrespectful. What makes it worse is that I called another restaurant in town for the exact same type of request and they handled it politely and professionally without a single issue. That's what normal customer service looks like. It genuinely makes me question how someone with that kind of temperament is running a business. Absolutely disgusting attitude. Place was empty, spacious and looked very clean. The missing two stars is because my food was subpar. I ordered two platters, chicken & lamb. It comes with rice & salad and ordered some hummus. Ordered to go, got home to some soggy rice, wilted bag salad (the kind you get at OG) and pita bread from the local supermarket. Listen, pandemic has some restaurants pinched. But come on, at least spare some aluminum foil and pack it right (see pic) and my salad was not fresh. The chicken was good, same thing with our other plate. The meat was good. This is the kind of place you've probably walked passed plenty of times without realizing what you were missing inside. The Kebabçi West is the first Mediterranean restaurant I've found in Bergen County that I'd like enough to return to regularly, and it's very affordable and accessible. The restaurant is small, but my friend and I were the only people inside for dinner on a Friday night. We ordered everything to share: zucchini pancakes, hummus, shephard salad, and falafel. We weren't familiar with the portion sizes so it ended up being WAY too much food even though they were all appetizers -- but no complaints here! The falafel appetizer came served on top of hummus as well, so we didn't really need to put in a separate order, and the large shephard salad was probably big enough for 3 or 4 people to share as an appetizer. The zucchini pancakes were delicious and had a fluffy eggy texture -- I'm not usually a huge fan of zucchini but its flavor in the pancakes was mild. The shephard salad was great too, but maybe a little heavy on the vinegar; if it's possible to adjust the amount when you order then I'd suggest doing so, especially if you're hoping to take leftovers. The hummus was a great complement to everything we ordered, and the falafel was incredible -- crispy on the outside and softer on the inside, and not too crumbly. So we stopped here to enjoy a Mediterranean lunch and were pleasantly greeted by the gentleman working in the front. He recommended the lunch menu for the portion size, since we were there for lunch. Sometimes I get the chicken chops. The portion size is good. The salad is good. I Love the lunch special. Only thing I would recommend is if they serve better bread besides the Sahara pita bread. Full disclosure: Lebanese cuisine is my favorite. For some reason, trying to find anything resembling it is nearly impossible. Don't get me started on the umpteen falafel places in the city, where I work. All overpriced. All slop. All crap. Okay so what about Turkish cuisine? I've been to Turkey and yeah, the food was good, fresh, tasty, the hospitality of the proprietors universally awesome and welcoming. Kebabci West has all that. And perhaps more. Maybe it's a regional thing (don't know where the owners are from), but the food has wonderful variety and flavor, like Lebanese, and a notch above my prior experience, which was in Istanbul. Everything we've tried is delicious, made to order. Köfte (or kefte) is amazing: perfectly seaonsed, fresh beef, cooked perfectly. The chicken Adana is also superb. We're big fans of the shepherd's salad topped wiht generous amounts of feta, too. Throw in rice or bulgur and more pita than I can finish, and you really get a full meal there -- all at good value. We get takeout, mostly because of our busy schedules (and kids who wouldn't eat anying but french fries), but also the sit down area isn't that inviting. I know it was some dopey muscle/smoothie bar or some shit before this place and some of the "gym decor" has carried over. They definitely upped the decor since it first opened. It's also small; again not their fault. I would like to see the place given over to a more welcoming and inviting look, which I think would better reflect the food and the hospitality there. Such great place food and service wise deserves to feel more comfortable. read more
