What a cool spot in the center of Cresskill! Hubby and I dined at Chef M. on a Friday evening around 7:30pm and were greeted and seated right away. Super cute, trendy, romantic yet not stuffy restaurant. Can dress up or down. Great service, great eats and great location! Easy street parking back parking lot offered also. Prices super normal and totally worth the dishes. They offer complimentary pita, Turkish bread and olives and olive oil. DELICIOUS!! We were obsessed with the fresh Turkish bread!! We started with the calamari which was abundant and not bad at all. I'd rate it a 4 out if 5 because it should have been slightly more tender in my opinion. I came here Sunday afternoon for an early dinner for a birthday celebration and the place looked wonderful. Their menu is huge with Mediterranean staples and some more traditional dishes. The wait staff was wonderful. For appetizers we got the hummus, babaganosh, Shepard salad and falafel. The spreads were all delicious and they serve complimentary bread that is pita and another flatter bread which is great. The Shepard salad was refreshing. The falafel was the star of the show for me. The outside was insanely crispy and the inside was pillowy and flavored. It came with dipping sauce which I think was tahini and it paired very well with it. For dinner I got their okra lamb dish and my husband and father in law got the lamb shank. My mother and sister in-laws got the chicken shush. The okra dish was so big! The dish was a cross between a stew and casserole and it had delicious baby okra in warm tomato liquid and the lamb was extremely tender. It's a dish you'd want to be waiting for you on a cold summer night. It was served with rice on the side as well and it went perfect. The dish was so huge that I wound up taking a majority of it home. My husband's lamb shank was HUGE! It was well cooked and fell off the bone. It was surrounded by veggies and was a very impressive plate. The only complaints about the dishes, specifically the entrees was that they lacked a bit of salt. I am not one who likes their food overly seasoned or salty, but it definitely needed a small pinch to help bring out the natural flavors of the dishes. However, this place is a star and a great new addition to Cresskill. The prices for the amount of food you get in incomparable to anything else on the area. We will be sure to frequent here again! This was our 2nd time at this restaurant because the time before was a great experience... thus time, not so much. I ordered the Falafel Platter- and there was a long hair in it! I alerted the server and she was unabashed. She took my dish, told us she would not charge us for that dish. The other dinner - Chicken and Lamb kabob was good. What a cute and quaint restaurant for our Sunday Easter lunch!! The service was so friendly and welcoming. When we first arrived, I had canceled my reservation (oops!) and they were still able to seat our family of 4 immediately :) We started off with combination mezes, (hummus, babaganoush, grape leaves etc.) and the bread was so warm and charred perfectly. My family got chicken kebabs, chicken casserole and I got filet mignon kabob. All was wonderful!! My dad's chef special meal was chicken in white sauce and it was *chefs kiss. Local Turkish option recently opened and really very nice. Four of us started with a selection of mezzo options (hummus etc) which were fine. Breads were on point but not memorable. Everyone gave thumbs up approval to entrees (chicken shish kebab, my combo lamb/beef, salmon and falafel orders). Service was excellent. Baklava dessert was enjoyed. Food is great and delicious - no question. I had tried this restaurant on whim because Samdan wasn't open yet for the day. But really strange service that had me leaving the restaurant with a bad taste in my mouth. Not outright rude but service lacking and just kind of unhelpful. Honestly, it was such a confusing encounter I'm taking the time to reflect and share this experience. Upon reading other reviews seems like I wasn't the only one. Is it the particular lunch shift? 1. Server and hostess like to chat with each other, to the point of ignoring customers. Multiple attempts to get attention - other tables noticed before wait staff. The hostess even made eye contact with me but proceeded to chat with server. Usually if the waitstaff isn't around they at least help get the right person's attention. They seem to go out of their way to make themselves inaccessible behind the counters. 2. No check in at table. No body checks in here. While sure, customers don't want to be hovered around but a check in once would've saved the awkward "misunderstanding" of our having to wait long for our entree bc the server thought we wanted to finish our meze. I also overheard the table after us request faster service and partly think our food got deprioritized. 3. No wait staff hovering but we certainly had two flies that kept interrupting our meal. Obviously this isn't the restaurant's fault but it got to the point where it was disruptive and we pointed it out but was met with a very blasé attitude. "What can you do" was the answer - basically deal with it. No offer to move to a new table. Then I saw the flies sit on napkins on other tables and it was clearly time to go. 4. Came in for lunch but given regular menu, purely based on my observation - other people ordering there was a lunch menu? My fault for not asking I guess - but still not a great experience. Maybe this place should be more of a take out joint than a restaurant. read more

The ambiance is great - love the big screen TVs with videos of the Mediterranean. The service was warm and friendly and attentive without being intrusive at all. As to the food, what can I say? I am Croatian, and I grew up on grilled fish, amazing olive oil, and the freshest of veggies. I had a very hard time finding a restaurant that is on the level of what I am used to getting from restaurants in Croatia (along the Dalmatian coast) and certainly growing up at home with my parents.....until now. I would put Chef Mediterranean up against any seafood restaurant I've ever been to. However, seafood is not all they serve. Just a fantastic place. We were delighted to discover that Samdan's original owner opened a new restaurant right around the corner but, although the menu is very similar to the original Samdan menu (we were regulars at Samdan for over 20 years) the quality of some of the food doesn't measure up. My wife had the lamb chops and she said they were, hands-down, the worst lamb chops she has ever had. She suspected they were par-boiled before grilling and that they were totally without taste. My Iskander, however, wasn't bad at all; it wasn't great, like Ibo used to make in Fairview. That was legendary, but this Iskander is "merely" good. The service was attentive but it is disconcerting to see the employees retreat to looking at their cell phones when not attending to the patrons. I know they're bored just standing around but they are far more attentive to their electronic devices than people dining in their restaurant. There must be a solution to this. I see it a lot. read more
