Finally found some legit Jew food without schlepping to the city! Woohoo! When I come to NY to visit family I have my checklist of NY staples that must be completed. Pizza, check! NY Chinese food, check! Bagel w/lox, check! White Castle, check! And of course my White Buffalo! Jewish Deli! Of course you can go to the city but that's always a pita and the local place I went to for decades took a nose dive so I consulted Yelp and found Tenifly Kosher. The pics looked legit so I stole my daughter car and took a drive. As soon as I walked in I was happy. Nothing fancy but VERY much your typical Jewish Deli layout (check). All the usual appetizers in the case (check) and hotdogs on the griddle (check). I was immediately greeted by the owner who was cordial with just the right amount of gruff and a NY accent which rivals my sister's! (BIG check). After I ordered I explained my dilemma to the owner who did nothing to sell himself or the place which is appropriate BUT he did give me his credentials which were impressive. Got everything to go. As the aroma filled my car I could actually feel my arteries starting to harden! (this is a good thing). So? How was the food! Most excellent! If you enjoy Jewish deli you know pastrami on rye is the benchmark and Tenafly's is fantastic! (personally I like mine sliced thicker but that's a personal choice and I'm sure if I asked they would). I also like a little crunch on my knish but that's minor and again personal preference. Regardless the food, service, attitude, vibe and price were all legit. Most important it allowed me to check the box without the traffic. I'm a happy Jewboy and Tenafly is now part of my visit rotation. Mazel Mazel! Good things! read more

In an effort to find a replacement for Nosher Rye, we came here. Disappointed to find that it's not really a place to come and eat. I came here on a Saturday afternoon since people in town have recommended their sandwiches. There's not many old school Jewish delis in the area, I mainly see them in NYC. The place is more like a takeout place to grab and go. I got the pastrami and tongue sandwich. The sandwiches both came with mustard and pickles. I also got some rugelach because why not. The sandwiches were fresh and had a lot of meat in them. The rugelach was okay, a bit stale maybe since I went late in the day. The staff were friendly and fast. I was in Bergen County getting car service and I felt a craving for a deli-style lunch. I searched Yelp and discovered Tenafly Kosher Deli. What a cool place! First off, the craving was satisfied. I had classic corned beef on rye with mustard and a side of garlic pickles. Excellent sandwich and priced just under $10. Doctor Brown's soda was the perfect drink for lunch. I brought home a few slices of smoked Nova salmon and enjoyed it very much the next day. Special note for this deli is the cozy atmosphere. There are no tables, just counter seats facing a wall mirror, so don't bring a group. The guys working there are very nice, there is classic rock playing and sports on the solo television. A good spot, not close to me, but when In the neighborhood, I would definitely try a few more of their plentiful deli offerings. read more

Ahhhh the kosher deli, unfortunately a dying breed. Tenafly Kosher Deli is as classic as it gets. Everything from the hanging salami to the steam collecting on the windows from the rotisserie chicken to the mechanical bell on the window. This place has got it all but you won't find any ham here! Also something worth noting is that their french fries are surprisingly incredible. I know fries from a kosher deli wtf but trust me they are to die for. This place has real deal Pastrami (for when you don't want to go to Katz) - a def must try. Been here many times and I've honestly never had anything other than pastrami on rye with mustard. Pastrami is done just right and I would highly recommend it to anyone to go check it out. Inside isn't anything spectacular, but just go order grad and go - don't worry about esthetics - trust me. Also staff can be a bit rude and unfriendly (maybe if you're not a regular) but these types of places are the only ones where I can get over stuff. Check it out! read more

Been going here for years. They certainly have pretty good food here. For the first timers, try a sandwich (roast beef or turkey) or a hot dog, or the bbq chicken and mashed potatoes. The soups are pretty decent as well. There are a couple things I do not like about this place. First off, it is expensive. I went a couple days ago and I got one sandwich (turkey on rye) It came to over $10 (no drink, just a sandwich). It wasn't huge or anything either justifying such a high price. It was good, but not $10 good. I also seem to get charged a different price for the same items I order depending on who is ringing me up-- that just seems strange. Lastly, I notice that they handle the money and will make the food without washing their hands. Money is a germ magnet and you either need to have 1 person who just handles cash or put on fresh gloves each time you make food. So although the food is very good, I don't go as often as I would because the prices are just too high for me. October 1 2014 update: Been a while since I have been back and I am bumping them up a star (4 stars now). When I was in there a lady asked the cashier if she could make some food. The cashier reply 'no' because she cannot handle money and food because money is a 'germ magnet'. I about died because that was verbatim what I wrote! I've been eating at this place for years and it never gets old. Ever since I went to college Tenafly Kosher is my favorite place to come back and eat. Whether it's Thanksgiving, Winter or Summer vacation, I always make an effort to pay this place a visit. The people there always remember me no matter how long a time I'm away from NJ and always hook it up with the best pastrami on rye with mustard. I wish I could post a great review, but I was very disappointed. I stopped for lunch yesterday and ordered a corned beef on rye with mustard and a flat potato knish. According to the sign behind the register it would be "stuffed." Instead, what I'd received was thinly sliced chewy corned beef - definitely not "stuffed"... no mustard... a knish that was nuked for a few seconds which was cold inside and a half-sour pickle when I wanted a sour one. No Dr. Brown's diet soda either. I ate it in the car because I was hungry, but it was raining and I'd decided that it wasn't worth going back in to complain. The deli is clean, the sushi looked good, the prices were fine and I understand it's not Katz's on the Lower East Side - but I'd never return read more

I am a long-time customer of Tenafly Kosher; I went there recently and was underwhelmed. The pastrami sandwich was pretty good however smaller in size or smaller bread size? The coleslaw was always excellent. The homemade knish in my mind had a weird taste. I should have remembered from last time. read more

We had a glimmer of hope when we approached this little Kosher Deli we happened upon during our get-acquainted drive through a local neighborhood. Having just moved a couple miles away, we were on a mission to find the best of our favorite take-out foods: Chinese, Pizza, Deli. We are, after all, New Yorkers and didn't want to hot-wheel it into the City for all of those foods. In the window was the required Kosher Deli item: the hot dog roller machine. In we went. No question on what we wanted: "Two Pastrami on rye, on the fatty side, with mustard." The fridge held the only thing you drink with Pastrami, or any deli, really: Dr. Brown's Cream Soda, Black Cherry Soda, and Cel-ray Soda. I am a Cel-ray girl all the way, and I sipped while we waited. It's a pick-up-by-the-register kind of place, so we did, and let's talk construction first: A thinly sliced generous stack of meat moist with steam and lovely fat...sandwiched between soft rye bread slathered with yellow mustard. A seasoned pastrami professional will tell you the first bite is dead center of the first half you pick up. We bit. We shut our eyes. The meat melted, simply melted into our mouths and our hearts. Perfectly seasoned, meat-to-fat ratio perfect for us...we looked at each other and not a word was spoken. The sandwiches disappeared along with the two pickles you get on the side. A fantastic first impression...and it's been consistently wonderful every time after. This place is our weekly stop and maybe one day we will try their other offerings; they all look great, but we are pastrami-strong and have yet to not want just that. Go. Just go. read more

Best pastrami on planet earth. I live in North Carolina but I was born in New York. We were up on personal business and were looking for a pizza place. Glad we changed our mind. After reminiscing with a friend from Newark, NJ about the terrific "Sloppy Joe's" we used to have at Kartzman's Deli on Bergen Street, I was craving one in the worst way -- actually the best way if you think about it -- so I stopped in Tenafly Kosher Deli and ordered one. I was NOT disappointed! Sitting at the counter (there aren't any tables) I savored every morsel until it was gone. If you want good old Jewish Deli (the way it was done in the "good old days") you've got to come here. The prices are good; you don't quite get the banter of the old-fashioned Jewish waiters (any experienced "fresser" will know what I mean) but the staff is great, very nice and helpful if you're having difficulty deciding what to eat. It's been a wicked winter, in that I mean that it has knocked out every person in my family with some sort of cold, flu, virus, you name it. So the wise rule of thumb is to bring home some matzoh ball soup. On my way home, I picked up a container filled with honest good for you matzoh ball and noodle and brought it home to my husband.
