Definitely a skip, I was so hyped to try this place because there's so much "Cajun" food that is DOODOO. Unfortunately this is another one. Don't get me wrong the service was great, but were from Louisiana our selves and this place ain't cutting it. To begin one of our seafood platters had no fish with it. The other had a filet smaller than a chic-fil-a sandwich portion. Then the red beans and rice was watery, and anything that wasn't grilled? Flavorless. It was like they ran out of salt for the day. I will say that the grilled things and the poboy were good, but for that price? Absolutely ridiculous. Almost ninety dollars for some mid food? The sauces were good, but the fries and boudain were tasteless. I don't write reviews often. However we live 30 minutes from this place and I have never been so mad after a meal. I'm telling y'all to SKIP THIS PLACE. I don't care how many reviews there are it is all cap. The biggest let down was because of how good the service was. After many years of excuses I finally made it for some really good seafood gumbo. It was a popular music night and although a slight delay in getting seated, staff did a wonderful job in getting us a table. Many New Orleans and Cajun dishes. However if you are a crazy kid and need something snazzy the traditional MaqueShu (sp?), and any of the fish dishes blackened, or the boudin will meet your every Cajun desire. Make sure you got the right order before you leave with take out. My experience with Evangeline Cafe started with a phone call for take out. I was put on hold. 5 minutes later I was hung up on. Seeing how good the reviews are, I let that slide and just drove over there. I placed an order for gator bites, frog legs, crawfish evangeline, and gold band creole. When I arrived home, the contents of the bag included a shrimp evangeline salad, crawfish etufee, and crawfish evangeline. Lesson learned. Will not return. read more

This place is Awesome. If your are tired of the mundane and boring, give them a shot. Evangeline's has recently become our go to place because of the quality of the food, the service and the really uniques atmosphere. My personal favorite is the Gold Band Creole. This place is awesome! We met up with a friend, as the musician playing that evening was someone she used to follow back in the day, and honestly had no real expectations on how the food would be. We were beyond impressed. We shared the friend oyster starter (amazing) and a shrimp (fried of course) poboy and then I had a small seafood gumbo while my fiance had a cup of the regular gumbo; both of which were also really tasty. My First review! This place is a little gem. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, especially since it's located in a strip center. However, once inside, you will fill right at home with all the crazy decorations everywhere....Ok, on to the food. I've had all sorts of wonderful creations from this place but, I will just comment on the most recent. I ordered the seafood combo with fried shrimp and oysters and opted for the dirty rice over the fries. The shrimp and oysters were cooked absolutely perfect. I hate ordering oysters and they come out rubbery. NOT HERE! They melted in my mouth. Think Hershey's Kiss on a Texas Sidewalk in August (or June the way things are going). Yes, they are that good. The rice was a little on the dry side but still acceptable ( I added some hot sauce!). The salad was fresh and the dressing (Ranch) was homemade and yummy. So I just left this place without eating. I sat at my table for about 12 minutes with no one coming coming by my table nor did they acknowledge me. How about "Can I get you something to drink?" or "I'll be right with you" THIS is what really pissed me off the most...It wasn't even busy. Saw a lot of chatting servers who were too busy to see there was a customer waiting to order. This isn't the first time this has happened. Came in for a quick lunch after hearing a lot of good things. Immediately when I came in the door, I was greeted with smiles from the staff. I ordered a roast beef po-boy and potato salad. The roast beef wasn't quite shaved ribeye, but it was flavorful, tender, and there was plenty of it. The jalapeno mayo is a must-have, the bread was fresh, and the provolone cheese was fully melted and high quality. Overall, a very, very fine sandwich that was well put-together. Solid portion for the price. Definitely good for repeat visits! The potato salad was not awesome. Grocery Store brand dusted with paprika. Pretty uninspiring. Take a pass on this and hit up one of their other sides - red beans and rice, onion rings, maybe even a small gumbo or jambalaya. Lastly, service. I mentioned before that I was greeted with smiles upon entry. The wait staff is very friendly, very attentive, and they know the menu well. Following their recommendations is...recommended! As an aside, Molly (one of the waitstaff) missed a calling as like a model or something - wow! Extremely friendly and welcoming as well. This is my go-to Cajun restaurant in Austin. I've gone many times and will be back soon. The lunch specials from 11-3 are solid. If I'm really hungry sometimes I'll just get two entrees because they're so inexpensive. I love the Stuffed Pistolette appetizer and just about always get at least a side of the Gumbo regardless of what I'm eating. Haven't had anything yet that I didn't enjoy. So this was my second time trying out this place. I didn't like it the first time, but I think my taste buds have changed. So i decided to try again and I am so glad I did! I brought my wife here for our 2 year anniversary yesterday. We had a shrimp pistolette to start, it was so creamy and delicious. We had a couple Abita beers. We then received our food, it was really busy, so it took a minute. I got the Crawfish Evangeline and she got the Crawfish Etoufee. Both really tasty. Took everything in our power to ask for togo boxes so that we could eat dessert. We ordered the bread pudding, which was warm and sweet covered in nuts. Man, I can't wait to go back! read more
