I'm going to BBB to complain how he cheated me by adding more and more prices to fix a check engine light. Called today and guy was rude and seemed completely put out by me simply asking if they still did smog checks and if I needed an appointment or just drive in. Didn't seem an odd question since I live in 29 and they've recently had spray paint on their gate that says "repairing cars" or some such. Wanted to confirm they still did smog, sorry to bother ya dude. Had my smog done there two years ago and got rude treatment from the woman running the office then, in addition to overhearing her say a bunch of racist stuff about a prior customer. Our family makes every attempt to keep business local to support our community, unfortunately this establishment did not help in any way. My husband and daughter took our truck into the shop for repair We were quoted 2000.00 no prob we will pay which we did, however after multiple miss communications with mechanics, owner and wife "book keeper" we went to pick up truck we were told a different amount which we did not authorize or sign for. Needless to say we had to take our keys and paper work with sunny being VERY RUDE AND MAKING COMMENTS ABOUT COLOR OF SKIN. I would have to take them back and he would order them himself. My first experience with Mr Evans was 2012 at the old Smog Dog in Yucca. He had me buy the part at AutoZone. They gave me a O2 sensor with a cord that was obviously way too long. Evans installed it that way instead of getting correct part. Also I later found the EGR problem he could not solve was a cracked VSV valve leaking vacuum. I also installed a proper O2 sensor. Second time I used him was in a shop at JT ok work smogged my RV, charged $30 for a gas cap. Third time I used him he was nice and drove me home (JT to 29) Working out of his house, not a shop which he did not tell me ahead of time. Then he charged $100 diagnostic for smog. $150 for replacing exhaust manifold gasket which he did not do, then he broke the O2 sensor off and had the pipe cut and rewelded. The final bill was $563 which I put on my card. I emailed him a day later asking him to refund what he didn't actually work on. He used all caps and said returning money he stole was not the way he runs his business. And of course he gave none of my money back. So bottom line for out here in Morongo Basin just getting someone to look at you broken car is challenging. So Evans is a sloppy mechanic that will charge you for work he does not do and the work he appears to do is way substandard. I will drive 150 miles to find an honest mechanic as there are none up here. Live and learn. read more

I was in a crazy rush driving from Vegas to LA. I went the back way because I heard the 29 palms DMV was always empty. I needed to get my car smog first and every single shop was full for the day. I called Evans Automotive and explained my situation, bless their hearts they took mercy on me and helped me out right away. WARNING!!! Do not take your vehicle here. I brought my RV to get snogged (to transfer ownership) after it had just recently passed last year. They said it needed some minor work on the carb and EGR sensor, and that it would be $375.00 instead of the $120 for just the smog. So I reluctantly told her to go ahead if that's all it needed to pass, but when I go to pick it up she said "you guys owe $675.00 because we had to look around your gas tank because it has a leak." WTF!!! I said "we told you we can only afford $375.00". So she says we'll I'm going to have to keep it until you guys pay me. I borrowed money and got the RV the hell out of there. It's a SCAM- totally. To add insult to injury, when I dropped it off it had a 1/4 tank of gas. When I picked it up, it was below Empty, and as if that wasn't enough. When I drove it away it had a new squealing sound coming from the engine and smelled like something was burning! It was worse than it was when I had dropped it off, and I was out over $500.00 when it was all over with. Plus... She still FAILED it and it didn't pass Smog. Unbelievable! Don't take anything to these people to get fixed unless you either want to make it worse, get ripped off, or lose your vehicle altogether because you are unable to pay ridiculous charges. This place deserves absolutely ZERO stars, DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE WITH YOUR VEHICLE'S. John recently bought the E-Z service shop across from rite aid from the previous owner Bob. Bob had replaced a few things in my car prior. So when I found out these people bought the shop I thought Id be ok with letting them change my oil and I had trouble starting my car in the morning so I asked them to take a look at it, THATS IT WAS JUST TO DIAGNOSE They charged be $30 oil change my coolant is on minimum , my power steering fluid was over flown. They charged me $100 or a diagnosis. Suddenly they tell me my car wasn't starting at all in there shop and they would call me and let me know the diagnosis. Never called me to tell me the diagnosis after telling me they would. I called them the following day , Around 1 o'clock pm. They tell me they had ordered a fuel pump the day before and began installing it already. Which they charged us $340 for, and $140 for labor. This here is a total of $630!! I needed the car running asap so I told them they didn't get my permission to work on it But I need the car anyway so I'll see how it goes. I go to pick up the car pay half of the $630. (I was gonna pay the rest the next day) Then the following morning the car was having the same problem it had in the first place! I then filled up my tank, And now realized I have a constant drop almost pouring gas out of the back of my car. Took it to a different mechanic , And low and behold, THEY FORCED IN A FUEL PUMP THAT DOESNT EVEN FIT MY CAR!!! There wasn't a line going to part of the fuel pump and gas has literally been pumping out under my back seat and down under my car!! I'm absolutely livid at this point ! I took my car into the automotive shop in August 2019. I asked to have my thermostat looked at and the owner of the business asked me what kind of work I do. I told him I am in the home improvement business. He said great maybe you can fix up my office for me! I said sure that would be something that I could do for you. He then took a look at my van and the next day I returned there he had the whole front end of my car taken apart. I asked him why he took my car apart, and he informed me that he was going to rebuild the whole cooling system. I never ask him to do anything more than check my thermostat. He then billed me over $1000 for work he performed on my vehicle. He even went as far as to change the bulbs in my license plate. I don't know what was going on there but all I wanted was my thermostat checked. Then in 2022 the month of June, I was served to go to small claims court to pay the bill on the vehicle that I never wanted him to do any work on at all. His wife came to my house and threatened my family and I got bad letters in the mail from the company. They said that I still owed them $1057. I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy! It was a cuckoo house! The lady there came to my family's home and blocked our car so we couldn't leave. She was very rude to my family and we called the police! WOW! The police went to the business and stopped any further contact but my special needs kid was terrified! I'm writing this review for anyone who has car repairs to NOT do business with this company! I live in Yucca Valley, and its a little bit of a drive to Joshua Tree, but Evans Automotive has the best price around for oil changes. We recently had four vehicles in the family that needed to be done and also needed Smog Checks....John took good care of us and gave us a great price on the Smog Checks too. We passed the first time, but I'm told that its free if you have to do a re-check. John is really knowledgeable and has years of mechanic experience. Its a little hard to find, but look for the yellow and red building + sign on the north side of the highway just at the beginning of JT. I think they are worth checking out. read more

I came into Evans Automotive today (8 October 2020) and I met Sunny Evans. She took such good care of me and even did extra. All I did was come in for a SMOG check but she also went and checked my car for any codes at no charge. She was concerned about my well being and wanted to make sure everything was safe for me to drive. After learning my sister bought tires with no sensors, she suggested I get that fixed along with the cabin air filter for my health. Despite having knee issues, she did all of the bending down and physical work herself... no complaints and no asking for help. She's the type to push through it and get the work done. All throughout having to answer phone calls, taking care of my car, and doing other things, she went out of her way to also have a conversation with me and get to know me. Even from her phone calls with other customers, I could tell she just wanted the best for others. Took my Ford ranger in here due to my oil gauge flipping around. I figured it was a bad sensor. Went back 4 times. Then the owner John Evans says no its the gauge . You need a new dash cluster. I had just paid 250. I suggested to replace the sensor. They order a dash its got PRNDL my truck is a manual . I said no put my dash cluster back in. The mechanic put my old dash panel that works back in The owner says put some tape over the PRNDL I was blown away that he would even suggest that. I replied are you kidding me ? I was hired in the office and he expected me to train myself and also had me start doing smog checks on cars when I am not authorized to do so. I worked 2 10 hour shifts at this company and never went back . He then refused to pay me for my hours of work because he told me I was in training and didn't have to pay me . Awesome place! I was camping in JT with some friends and we were having an awesome time till I tried to leave and my car wouldn't stop. I called this place and spoke with John who tried to give me some diagnosis over the phone to no avail. Luckily I had triple A and they gave me a tow over there and John got me all squared away in a couple hours. Did a follow up with my regular mechanic when I got home and he said the repair was done right and the price was actually less than he would have charged me so I was pretty happy with that. read more

i don't know what is up with john but very frustrated that warranty work is not being honered. he has had my truck for 7 weeks and they decide to close shop and my truck is locked in so i can't get to it. i always thought john was a good mechanic but i have to question my thinking because i'm hearing from many people about shoddy work or works well for a minute before you have problems. Thank you John for figuring out what was wrong with my Jaguar and fixing it. I had a air intake hose that kept coming lose which caused me to loose power and the check engine light to come on. I took it to the dealer. They just reconnected it and sent me on my way. I heard about Evans Automotive and I called him. When I described what was happening, he told me I probably had a broken motor mount that was the cause. Sure enough, I took it in and that was exactly what was wrong. It cost me a couple hundred dollars and I've never had a problem since. Also, he has serviced my wife's and both my daughters cars, smog, oil change and other repairs and service issues. I just got had by John Evans and his sidekick, Ruby, who, through very unskilled manipulation and outright lies that I should of just walked away from in the first place, took me on a 6 day, sideways trip for a whole lot of nothing but what little money I have out of my pocket and time and energy uselessly spent. The reviews that you see here that are positive are spoofed, probably by him or her and there's not much to trust about this mechanic. He told me he could smog my vehicle even though it was modified, promised it even, and being short on funds, he accepted IT work for his wonky network issues, which I reluctantly served before he fulfilled his part of the bargain. There's this guy ranting and raging at another guy, making the weirdest faces and gestures. The other guy left, so obviously, the weird one belonged to the business. Can I give zero stars? I have had nothing but bad luck from this place. I originally went to Evan's thinking it was still owned by the previous people who had worked on my car in the past. When I found out it had changed owners I figured I'd stay with them since my car was already in their system. Bad idea. I had repairs done, they took forever, never gave me an estimate (even though I explicitly asked for one) and then the service ended up costing more than I had hoped to pay. As I drove my car off the lot something went terribly wrong and I ended up getting stuck in the middle of highway 62. The mechanic nonchalantly told me that my u-joint had broken and now part of my car was dragging on the ground. That got fixed. Then 2 weeks later another issue arose, which should have been addressed in the original diagnosis of the first problem. After some negotiating I got the price dropped for this repair. I then noticed that my car wasn't locking into place when I put it in drive. Again, I returned to the shop and the mechanic said he'd look at it and fix it. Fast forward 3 months and it was still a problem. I finally took my car to another place and they fixed the problem right away. I'm never going back to Evan's, my car deserves better. read more

John and Sunny are the nicest folks around. And they did a great job with our car. There was a pretty big whole in our coolant tank, and it needed to be replaced. John got us the part right away, and took care of it immediately. The car was dropped off by 9am and done by 10:30 am! The price was great and he even rotated our tires.
