I bought the Living Social coupon for a wash, blow out and conditioner, with a mani pedi for $50.00. I went in February but ended getting a totally different service ( they upsell) and spent about $150.00, that visit. So I realized that I needed to use the deal before it expired on 9-22-11 and called and made an appointment and was seen by the same stylist Sharntai (sp). Sharntai checked out my hair and advised me, because it was natural there was an extra $15.00 charge added to the service, and that I would need a haircut when I said I only wanted a trim, she said they don't do trims only haircuts. The price for the haircut was $65.00. Lastly, I had extensions in ( 2 pieces) and was charged $25.00 to take them out. My total was $99.19 ( before tip), in addiiton to the $50.00 for the cost of the Living Social deal. Sharntai was very respectful of my time and I was washed, conditioned and blown out in record time. The haircut was more than I wanted, but the style was cute, too bad it didnt last the night on my natural hair, it looked pretty when I left the salon though. I got here at 5:30 and was out by 7:00.I wasnt able to get the mani pedi that day because the manicurist leaves at 7 and was rescheduled for another day. read more

I purchased a Groupon for an express mani/pedi, but was unable to book an appointment before the expiration date. I was booking last minute, and while other Groupon clients have extended the expiration in order to accomodate the amount of people redeeming, I was told that my Groupon would have to go unused. Because of this, I think they will lose many clients who would have frequented the Salon. It is not a wise decision to turn down potential future customers who have already paid for a service. I, for one, will go elsewhere for all of my Salon services in the future. read more

I recently visited Evolution and was very pleasantly surprised. I'm growing out a relaxer and the in between stage is hard to manage so I really needed help. The staff here is talented, professional and very friendly. I got a wash, blow dry & flat iron (about $100) and my hair looked beautiful when I left. I'm used to paying these high prices in Manhattan but Brooklyn rents are cheaper so I wasn't thrilled about the final cost - especially on Atlantic Avenue. However, I received excellent care, good advice on hair maintenance and only spent about an hour and a half in the salon. So what if I didn't have to cross a bridge? I got exactly what I wanted right in my own backyard. I really like this place and intend to go back as often as my wallet allows - LOL! read more

I have been coming here for two years. The only stylist I have ever used is Tasha (the owner). I wear my hair in a natural style and I find that Tasha knows her stuff in this area. She uses (and has available for sale) top of the line products. In rare instances I have felt that Tasha was overbooked and consequently my wait was longer than expected. However, these instances are rare indeed. Of course, I try to book early morning (i.e., 10am) appointments and always go during the week (as opposed to a week-end). The salon is very clean and chic (as other posters have noted). I find the staff very user-friendly; and the website is also great--the ability to book appts online is huge. I have also frequently availed myself to the manicure and pedicure services. I would and have recommended Tasha to persons who wear their hair natural or are in the process of going natural. I have observed that the salon has a lot of clientele that have relaxers and/or wear their hair straight and the stylists appear to do a good job--i.e., hair looks great when people leave, but I can't vouch for how they do in that area since I don't wear my hair straight or have a relaxer. read more

My teenager has thick long hair and for years I have been taking her to different places and I can tell you this is the first time she has said to me "this place is great. They are friendly, professional and never once made me feel ashamed that I had thick hair." Music to my ears. I have been natural for about 2 and 1/2 years and rarely straighten my hair. Decided to go to this salon 4 months ago, because of the positive reviews, for a press and curl. First of all they say you can book over the phone but they almost never pick up and if you leave a message they do not call you back. So I booked online and if you book with the owner, which I did, you have to pay extra. The place is a cute clean spot. Everyone is nice and professional. With that said, I went for a press and curl but got a flat iron and curl (two different things). It came out great, really beautiful but kept getting pressured for a trim, which btw was $50 more! I declined and got shamed for not doing it. I must admit I am weary of places I've never been to cutting my hair because stylists tend to say trim and you leave with a haircut. But please keep the preaching and shaming for the pulpit. This salon is expensive!!! Approximately $100 without a hair treatment, mask, or haircut. Still I went back a two weeks ago because I was going on vacation and my hair looked great the last time I got it done here. Keep in mind I got a trim two weeks later at a salon I had been to many times shortly after being encouraged to get one here. My hair appointment was just as before, including the pushing for a trim. Like I said I was going on vacation the very same day and I wanted to look my best so I agreed to get a trim. For $158 I left with a haircut (not a trim) I did not like and a little more than 3 inches off of my hair!!! WTF!!! I will most likely go back here but just for the basics. And never for a trim or a haircut again. Expensive and scissor happy is not a combination I look for in a salon. Oh and my hair didn't even stay straight for the week I was away. read more

I absolutely loved getting a manicure and pedicure from Missoni. She has a lot of style and really loves what she does. I let her choose my nail colors, and she is truly a connoisseur of nails. I went into this shop a couple months ago (late March). I went in for a press & curl, and I ended up paying between $70 and $75 including tax and tip. I can't exactly say that I felt welcomed, however I did appreciate the sense of professionalism by the staff. The space was very clean and everyone had some elbow room despite the smaller size of the shop. I got a consultation, a wash, blow dry, and the best press and curl I've ever had in my life! I remember saying, "Oh my God, it feels like white girl hair!" She laughed a little and corrected me: "It's called move-able hair." I've never had my hair feel, move like that. And when she curled it, they stayed fresh for about half a week and started slowly falling out after that. I got so many compliments on the way home, and I felt amazing! The only reason I haven't been back is because I'm a broke college student from California and I had been hopping around testing the shops in the area. Although I found a place that was cheaper, I understand that they weren't worth the money. So I definitely will be coming back to Evolution for my press & curl. I've been to Evolution twice now, both times to get a touch-up (I get my hair relaxed). I had a hard time finding a salon in Brooklyn where my stylists weren't more into gossiping and fooling around than working on my hair. Evolution is not that place at all. The vibe is very professional and the stylists know what they're doing. I felt comfortable asking questions about the products and talking with my stylist about my hair. They are on the pricey side, but you're paying for good quality and experience, and I don't want anyone messing up my hair! I've yet to try their other services (waxing, nails, spa treatments) but I expect they are just as professional in those areas as well. read more

I was going to Evolution for about a year...but they fell short of the service that I first received....The price began to rise and rise after every visit...and I could barely get an appointment with the same stylist consisitently, which is a pet peeve of mine, because I crave consistency. They take very good care of your hair and honestly the nicest and best hairstylest there is Jhuvanna. Also they change technicians a bit too much for me...I personally dont like to o many different people handling my hair week to week. I have been to evolution green room salon a couple of times, when I went the first time Jovannah was my stylist, I'm natural and I got the wash and blow like the dominicans do but on wet hair, then she flat ironed it. Jovannah is amazing my hair was bone straight but tooo straight and thin for me. my friend goes their a lot and bragged about their steam treatment, by the time I started going there their steamer was broke and they just wrap a hot towel around your head. They no longer steam apparently. The deep conditioner they suggested I needed was $35 and it was nuritress, me and my friend googled the price of nuritress conditioner and I can get a whole bottle for $11 so I didn't appreciate being over charged. Once my stylist kept telling me I need a trim and when asked the price of a trim she said $35, I said I'll pass. At another visit I decided to get a hair cut but once my stylist started to cut my ends I got scared and told her just to trim it, she said ok and trimmed my hair. My bill was $120 this is without a deep conditioner, I was extremely shocked and confused so of course I asked why? I was told for a cut or a trim its $60 I was in disbelief that they were charging $60 for a trim I was actually appalled. At another visit I left with my hair having puffed up roots but straight ends, another stylist did my hair not Jovannah and when asked why my hair was so puffy they said jovanna had a professional blow dryer, I was saying to myself and yall don't? I have never been back to evolution after that, and I do think the way they blow dry your hair damages and splits your hair it is not healthy for all natural hair some women even get their hair blown this way and they have perms. they blow dry it wet with the vent the way the dominicans blows dry hair, this blowdrying does work for my friends hair but not mine, I did notice my hair shedding or breaking once the style got old. If you have a ton of $$$ to spend or waste go right ahead to evolution, I honestly don't! read more

Sooo where do I start?? I had my first visit this past Saturday and am truly pleased with my results. I arrived approx 20 mins before my scheduled appointment time and was still taken right away. I was greeted by my very pleasant and vibrant stylist Jestina. I completed a form regarding my hair and maintenance routine which they keep on file along with the services I had for the day. I love that! I met with the owner, Natasha Paul who is very knowledgeable in hair care. She told me, my hair type and what would be needed to treat my extremely dry ends. She took her time, explained everything and quoted an upfront price so there are no surprises at the end. Jestina did my wash, condition and blow dry. She is awesome! While Ms. Paul trimmed my ends, wet down and coils. I loved the atmosphere here, nice gospel music played in the background, it was just a very comfortable experience. I felt welcomed like I was a long time customer. Salon is clean and beautifully decorated. Oh and I was offered a varied selection of tea, wine or coffee. I can go on and on, lol. A nice way to treat myself. I hope to come at least once per month. Loved it!! read more

Pricey Pricey Pricey!! I have been going to Evolutions on and off for over 4 years now...when I can afford it! Pro's - Great ambiance, clean, skilled professionals who are focused on you having a healthy head of hair. You will be treated well, and you will be in the chair at the time of your appointment!! That is a big deal for me because I feel many average salons forget about the customer service part of being at a salon and they treat you like you are an option with all the time in world. Evolution is quite the opposite, from the receptionist to the assistants they are top notch and will care for you like you are royalty. You will get a skilled professional who takes time to diagnose and treat your hair, with eco-friendly products that WORK!. You will walk out of there looking and feeling beautiful. I have seen women with all hair types leave looking FAB. This is a great place for african American women who are natural or want to transition to a natural, chemical free do. Con's - They are pricey for being pricey! this is the only reason they are not getting 5 stars. I have a hard time realizing the value for the service. I have walked out of there having spent $230+ for a relaxer, trim and conditioner! When I get the same service at the Dominicans (and I bring the products Evolutions recommends) I pay $65 tops! Now I have to deal with screaming, loud, messy conditions and non English speaking technicians, but when you don't have$$$ you suck it up I guess. They also have very rigid policies where they take a credit card for making an appointment, charge you if you are late or cancel at the last minute. It just seems sometimes that they are all about the buck! They do not have a loyalty program nor do they offer discounts for repeat customers, only new customers. Overall its a great salon, I would love to go if I had the income to support $75 weekly wash and blows and $230 every 6 - 8 weeks for a relaxer. If you have the $$$ and you like high quality this is the place for you! read more

The whole experience was great!! Receptionist, the young man who washed my hair, my stylist who was Natasha. I came early and was sitting and waiting. Natasha came by and said hi but did not know I was her client, not her fault, I had come before just to check out the spot so the receptionist who remembered me from my previous visit mistakenly thought i was there for someone else. Natasha noticed me still sitting after just about 5 mins NO LIE only 5 mins and came back to check on me and when she realized I was her client apologized profusely!! Again it wasnt her fault. The service was Excellent!! It is pricey, make that very pricey but you get what you pay for, I was totally happy. I am used to waiting in salons forever!!! 10 to 12 hours YES I KNOW, I know. From beginning to end of my service, it was about 3 hours I believe so I was there around 4 hours. read more

PROS: I made an appointment (recommended) and showed up early. I gave myself around 3 hours for the entire process, I walked out of there in 3 hours and 5 minutes. Gold Star. The staff was very polite and attentive, remembered my name, asked if I needed anything. Gold Star. My stylist was great (Tiffany) and I walked out of there looking fabulous! She was gentle, precise, and I got compliments on my hair for a week strait! Triple Gold Star. CONS: They overbook, perhaps they need to scale down appointments and focus more on one on one time. It was getting crowded after awhile, with people waiting for washes and dryers. The stylists where rushed and hurried, though they still did a great job. There were a few details I noticed on the upkeep side that could have been addressed. Looks like they may need a hardcore deep salon cleaning every month or so to tidy up the forgotten spots. I booked my appointment about 3 weeks in advance, the receptionist was professional and so was my booking process. I arrived about 10 mins early and had to wait about 20 minutes until my stylist was done with another client. She consulted with me, and her assistant began to wash and blow dry my hair. I then was waiting once more, four about and hour and a half. Within three hours all that was done was a wash and blow dry to my hair, and they had to re-blowdry it because I was sitting for so long that it frizzed up. I went to eat my food, to come back to see that my stylist (who is the owner) took another client before me and I asked my she did not come get me and her response was, "You were in the back eating." She re-blow dried my hair and finally began to cut my and color my hair. At this point it has been about four hours, mind you in my booking email it said that the whole process was supposed to take an hour and 15 minutes, which it would have if my stylist was not overbooked and didn't take her friends/long time clients before other people. I had to rush out and she couldn't properly style my hair because I had somewhere to be, and by me telling her what time I had to go made her finally prioritize me, which she should of considering I had an appointment. All in all, my hair did come out how I wanted it to but as a first time customer, I had a horrible experience. The stylist was completely overbooked, and there was no reason I should've been pushed to the side when her "regulars" came in. I was there for six hours when it should've taken at most two hours. I will not be returning because my wait time was unacceptable and they do not respect people's time at all. read more

I have been going to this salon for quite some time now and it truly embodies the concept of HAIR CARE. Natasha runs a very tight shift; she ensures that her high standards are being implemented every step of the way, which is GREAT for the customer! From the moment you step into the salon and until you leave, you feel as though everything is being done purposely and thoughtfully and there is no attitude, everyone is extremely sweet. Whether you are being serviced by Natasha or her other stylists, careful consideration is given to the condition of your hair at the moment and what it will need. Shampoo, conditioner and leave-in treatments for each individual customer are all discussed between the assistant and the stylist, they don't just pick up what ever is left on the counter. This is NOT the type of salon that will sacrifice the health of your hair just to make a quick buck, Natasha believes in nurturing the hair from inside out. That philosophy pays off, I am constantly getting compliments on my hair do, it manages to remain fresh and "editorial" even a week after my wash. Sure it can be pricey (though very much in line with other "high end" salons in BK or Manhattan), but if you can, its a great way to treat yourself and your hair (at least once in a while). read more

I've been to Evolution a few times after searching endlessly for a salon I could call home. I generally go to Natasha, the owner, who always does a great job and has gone out of her way to provide excellent service. The entire staff is generally very friendly and knowledgeable. I love getting the scalp treatment. I generally get highlights and a cut... but I have also had updo's done so I am confident they can handle anything. It's not the type of salon where you have to re-do your hair after you leave...lol. I haven't had a long wait at any point. Actually, they have been accommodating when I have been late. I have to agree that the prices are on the high side which can be a bit of a deterrent if you need to go regularly... but at least you know what you're getting! read more

What a pleasant memorable experience. I love the true professionalism and the quality hair service. Clean salon even the restroom... Very impressed. Minor hiccups, but not worth mentioning because they were corrected on spot. What I love the most that doesn't happen in predominant AA salons is Natasha faces her clients towards the mirror the entire time--during cut and style. Tasha is a true educator. Looking at the reviews for this place I made the decision to give it a shot. I am now leaving the salon and I am IN LOVE with my new cut. Sharntai did a real great job with washing and treating my previously damaged hair. She knows what shes doing and she does it well. I showed a picture of how I wanted my hair cut and I swear I walked out looking just like Victora Beckham! I do agree that the prices are high but you see where your money is going. I cannot believe I am one of the 1st persons to yelp - Evolution - the Green Room Salon. I am sorta honored and a little surprised. Where all the sistahs on yelp?! So, lets 1st say that I moved to Brooklyn about 12 months ago. The first time I went to Evolution - it was a gift from a friend This place is great. If you are a women - esp a women of color - esp a black woman - with kinky, straight or natural hair...this salon will do you good. I first went when I had straight hair -- i left feeling great - my hair looked and felt great. I went today my hair is natural - and they again did an awesome job. They are super professional, kind, smart and know their business. They give you good options and offer 20% off if you are a first time customer. I am def a fan of Evolution. I am still getting use to the cost of getting natural hair done with good products done well -- that is still somewhat of a challenge.... I have to be mindful of that - but I have committed to visit Evolution one every 8 - 10 weeks. Its worth it - my hair looks healthy and its great Everyone that works there is great. They are such a warm place. Also, they wax and do nails.... Evolution is a one stop shop for Black women who need to get their beauty on. Thanks Evolution! read more

I decided to check out Evolution since it got such good reviews. The pros: professional staff, clean shop, and light beverages offered. The cons: pricey and the mani and pedi were just okay...the prep work leading to the paint job was very good but the quality of the paint job was not quite what I expected. Also, it was a let down to walk into a shop with a lot of (sprayed) hair product diffused into the air...they primarily handle chemically processed hair although one of the staffers said that they did style locked hair... but I was looking for a shop with a different vibe...more natural bend. I should've wrote my review months ago (in summer 2012) the time that I went. Don't know if it makes a difference now! LOL, I totally forgot who I went to but she was okay (I think her name was Shan-something but it definitely started with an S) Nice personality and all but she was very rough on my natural hair. I was getting pissed but she kept saying my hair is very thick and tangled but that doesn't mean you need to rip it out my scalp. Anyway, I came there to get a texturizer (Mizani Butterblend). She divided my hair is four sections and slapped the texturizer in, waited a couple of minutes and washed it out. After the whole process, my hair looked okay but not the best. I think I realized that being natural for so long( four years) my hair is so sensitive to chemicals. Some parts of my hair took the texturizer easier than other parts; the right side was softer looking than the left side. I think she noticed it and said I should come back to get it re-done (yeah, right). They use Miss Jessie's products and that was the first time I had curly pudding used in my hair. My hair looked a bit better but it was just heavy with so much product and very wet-looking like a jherri-curl. The whole experience cost 150. I'm usually nice when it comes to tips, even if I am not satisfied. But lately, I've been a bit more aggressive. I decided not to tip and walked out after I paid. I wasn't happy with the look at all. I am sure the other stylists in there are better than the one I had but I haven't been back there since. read more

It pains me to have to write a negative review about a black-owned business. However this is the second negative experience I have had with the salon's owner in the past year. They both center around the owner chastising clients when they express concerns with service. In today's example, I went to the salon for an $85 styling appointment and brought my own pre-poo conditioner. At checkout, I was surprised to hear that I was charged an additional $25 for the application of my own personal conditioner. I never sat under the dryer for the conditioner. I expressed my concern to the stylist at checkout in a non-confrontational way supported by the fact that we both wished each other well and looked forward to seeing each other next week. I was then very shocked to receive a disturbing call from the owner shortly after leaving the salon who claimed that I had attacked her stylist and was no longer welcome to be a client. Surely, I have no intention of returning after this experience but I thought it prudent to let others know. Without a doubt, the hair styling itself is usually good which is why I returned following my first negative interaction. That said, I am sure she will respond with derogatory language as that has been her approach. read more

I really wanted to like this salon. I've tried this place twice. Both times I had to wait over an hour for a blowout -- even with an appt. The "scalp treatment" actually felt as if the stylist was drawing blood with the comb. And the right side of my head now has breakage from the overheating of the blowdryer and flat iron. read more

I was passing by and decided to try this place for a pedicure. The woman tried to shave my bunion with a very coarse pumice stone and left my foot a bloody mess. I am not the type of person to make a big fuss in public so I went through with the pedicure, but probably should have jumped out the chair and left. She didn't apologize or offer me a bandage.
