Before my haircut and blowout, I was struggling to maintain my unruly, thick mane that was no match for the summer's relentless humidity. I got my hair layered in the front and she used special scissors to thin out some areas to help make my hair more manageable in the future. I purchased a Groupon for a wash, cut, and blowout. I saw Lulu today and couldn't be more pleased. I usually end up crying after a haircut and this was my first cut in nearly a year, but Lulu was very friendly, detail oriented, and did exactly what I asked. Am not sure why there are negative reviews here, she was so conscientious about everything and speaks perfect English. I will definitely return to see her for my next cut, and may have her do balayage soon. I only write reviews for incredibly good or bad experiences, which I don't do often. I find that they do not use quality products and almost don't know what they are doing. I've never had such a bad hair experience. If its it's one thing that I have learned from this experience, it would be to NEVER buy my haircare appointments through Groupon. It's not cheap and it's borderline scam. No. Not doing it. Ever. Again. During my first wash at home, even before I put the shampoo on, the color was just running out of my hair. Ive never had this experience before. I dont know if Ella, the stylist, just put temporary color on the second time. Initially, the color came out all wrong, which they blamed on the condioner treatment by the way. The person that shampooed my hair lathered the color on my hair like shampoo so she missed a bunch of places. Shouldn't the stylist put the color on my hair? Initially the color was way off and multi- colored. Ella was quick to fix it before I started crying so I was like- ok. Then, the color was still too red and not the dark purple color that I wanted, but, I still looked good because it went with my complexion, so I again didn't freak out and justified it with another-ok. They almost forgot to put the Olaplex treatment, because Ella, the stylist didn't communicate this with the shampooer. But I was curious so I asked, and thats when she told her to put it on. I don't think its my job to remind you what your job is. The olaplex was for only 10 mins but its an additional 45$. Too expensive. The groupon does not cover the cost if color, which they call "toner," which is an additional 60$. However, as of now, I am upset. The color feels temporary and No, I am not using cheap shampoo. The only good thing was the stylist's behavior. She was a nice person. But the shampoo person seemed too amature for her job. All in all, it came out to be expensive for a bad job. I will be going to a full priced professional next time. Thanks for the lesson learned, Evolve Salon! I am not satisfied. I would not recommend this place to anyone for color. read more

Definitely not what I asked for as far as length and coloring. After cutting off around 6 inches of hair instead of what he showed me on my shoulder (around 2.5-3 inches). I had an intended photo of what I'd like my hair to look like and it turn absolutely nothing like the photo. When I confronted the stylist, he just kept saying the hair will lighten. I've gotten balayage before it doesn't lighten this much. Also, you can tell where my previous balayage started and ended which quite frankly looks a bit stupid. For just highlights- it's fine even though I'm not happy with the length, it'll grow back- but for the number of hidden fees that are there it's not worth it. I would have just paid a regular salon this cost- $60 for toner $35 additional for hair length/ texture for cut (which I have straight hair that needed just a straight cut with layers) $100+ tax for cut and balayage groupon Over $200 for a length I didn't want and a color that wasn't what I wanted. It would have been one thing if the cut was right and the color wasn't, or the color was right and the cut wasn't, but to pay $200 for neither was money wasted. read more

I purchased a Groupon to get color and a cut done. I did some research on Yelp and booked with Maria and I'm glad that I did. I brought in some ideas, but she presented different options to get the look that I was after. It's clear she really knows her stuff. The appointment as also a lot of fun. She's a great conversationalist and makes the time go by very quickly. I believe a lady by the name of LuLu stepped in a few times to rise the color and also do the deep conditioning treatment. She was also very nice, and easy to talk to. If anyone is debating going to this salon by using the Groupon deal or just because it's near where they work or live, I would highly recommend it. I had a great experience and would book with them again. The only thing preventing me from giving all 5 stars the haircut after the color service does not include a blow-dry. read more

Maria and Lulu are the best I came in for a blowdry spontaneously after having a few bad experiences with the blowdry chains like DryBar and Glam&Go. I purchased the balayage Groupon ($92) and added Olaplex + toner ($115) at the salon. The result of the balayage + toner left much to be desired since the color was not evenly blended all the way around the head, and the bleaching left a lot of unnecessary damage to otherwise very strong and healthy hair. The haircut afterwards was not blended properly. More concerning than the poor technique was that my scalp was burned at the salon. While the bleach was processing and I was under heat, I felt my scalp get so hot that I asked for them to turn off the heat. The pain was very unpleasant throughout the visit, and the stylist and her assistant did not acknowledge the damaged scalp to me at any point during the appointment. My burn was exposed to chemicals, heat, styling products, and likely bacteria while they finished the services. I went to another salon and got a second opinion about the scalp damage. They confirmed that the scalp was burned and would need time to heal as well at that the hair was indeed damaged beyond what would be expected of a balayage service. I reached out to Groupon with a photo of my damaged scalp, and they refunded my $92. read more

The atmosphere was great. The salon has a nice ambiance, the hair stylist were all friendly, smiling while working on their clients hair. I was received that I asked for a wash and set and they did a great job at not repeatedly burning my scalp as other salons tend to do, another great thing was that. Not once did anyone pressure me to cut my hair. This was a plus for me because usually salons try to pressure me into cutting my hair (tailbone length) They actually complimented me on how healthy and long my hair was for being color treated. I really appreciated that because as I said before, I don't normally come across a salon that makes me so comfortable. Overall, I would definitely be going back. This will be my new go-to salon. Also, they have a nail tech there witch is great if you want to get your nails/hair done in one spot. I learned I have to make an appt to see her so I was not able to do my nails, so I will be doing so to try her out. She appeared to have a good amount of clients coming in and out to see her. Please, whatever you do, do not go here for a color. Yes the prices are a lot cheaper than many salons in Manhattan, but trust me it is not worth it. I have been to Evolve before and gotten really nice haircuts, but I went for a balayage treatment recently and had a horrible experience. My stylist was taking forever and the bleach was sitting in my hair for so long - he even left me unattended for a period of time when only HALF WAY DONE WITH MY HAIR to talk to another unhappy customer. At that point the bleach started burning not only my hair, but my scalp. I was in so much pain I had to tell him to stop and wash it out before he was even done coloring my entire head. The end result looked horrible, nothing like what I asked for and nothing like a balayage. It's been a week and my hair is so damaged it keeps breaking and loosing clumps of hair. It's so damaged I'm l afraid to even go to another salon to have them fix it just yet. I bought a grupon haircut and deep conditioning treatment with blow dry. All I can say is I had a great experience at evolve. The personal and my hairstylist were very super nice. It was my first time going to evolve, I was running 15 min or so late for my appointment (it's NYC and the trains are always a mess.) I got there, they took me right the way. The girl who washed my hair was really nice. Maria Luisa Cortes was my hairstylist. She asked me what I wanted to do and I showed her pictures of the ideas I had for my hair. I got my hair cut here yesterday. Everyone was really nice and friendly. Maria seemed to be in a rush, working on two people the whole time. The color turned out ok, but the cut was really bad. It wasn't what I wanted at all. I'm not sure she listened to what I wanted or just isn't a talented cutter. I just got my hair recut at another salon (one day later) and it looks amazing. Literally the WORST salon experience I've ever had (and I've had a lot of bad ones.) I asked for balayage highlights- the woman basically poured a bucket of bleach on my head and it was bright orange and splotchy. She added toner, the roots were still bright orange, she dyed them darker and 8 hours later I left with reddish brown roots and blonde hair. I offered to pay for the minimum groupon amount (which I shouldn't have had to pay anything considering I walked in looking better than when I left) but they insisted on charging me more and threatened to send a collections agency after me. I went to see Maria for Keratin treatment and I am super happy with my experience. I have received Keratin in the past so I knew what to expect, but I was looking for a salon in NYC. The process took about two hours. The only difference I noticed between Maria and my previous experiences is that she applied the product with a brush versus the spray method. I actually prefer to have the product brushed on because I think it applies more evenly and directly. There's a discount for first time clients to the salon! I've been looking for a new salon since my stylist has moved to the west coast. I got a cut from Maria and was excited since she has so many great reviews. I will say I didn't have the same experience. The shampoo lady was 100% nicer than Maria and friendly. I asked Maria to take 2 inches off my hair and she throw in face framing layers. I really can't tell that it was cut as such. She didn't say one word to me, I asked her a about some tips for my hair and she just yawned. The icing was that I left a pair of sunglasses at the salon and noticed about 10 mins after. I called the salon and they had them and mentioned I'd be in the next day. I went in and they couldn't find them. I find it really funny since they were expensive and I called to have them put aside for me the next day. Such a bummer, I had high hopes for this place. However, the stylist did not do balayage technique as she used foils on my hair. I didn't realize how bad the color was until after I left and saw it in different lighting.
