A friend spoke highly of this place so I thought I would check it out. I did not have an appt but they still were able to get me in. I have really bad eyes I'm talking -9.50 and they were able to give me a lot of information about what shape would be best for me since my lenses on my glasses would be very thick. Initially a male was helping me who was super nice I think his names was James and then his coworker Daisy took over. I ended up leaving to check out other places but decided to come back. Daisy was so nice and professional and she went above and beyond to look for other glasses that weren't on the floor for me. Great place! Have been going here for years( My mother, sister, and I) and never a problem. They are all so helpful, never over crowded, never a long wait. Today, my sister and I got our screws tightened and replaced. Which they do for free if you buy your glasses with them, excellent! Great selection of brands and frames and they adjust the glasses for you as many times as you need until it fits just right. Travis helped us out at the front with great service, and even gave us a complimentary generic glasses case when we asked if they sold cases. Amber also did amazing job working with our glasses. **UPDATE** After receiving a personal phone call from the owner, I planned to come back and update my review after a busy work week. However, after reading the comment from her, I will be leaving my review. This comment is unprofessional and in poor taste. I do not need times from a surveillance camera telling me times I walked in and out (this is not even the long appt I was referring to), nor does the public need details about my appointments. Also, the issue was not John checking my insurance on the computer...and this was clarified over the phone and even mentioned why he got up 4 times to help other people. As a business owner, that often means swallowing pride, taking ownership, and apologizing. I thought we had a pleasant phone conversation in which I expressed my gratitude and understanding for the situation. This comment was absolutely unnecessary, and is a passive aggressive way to try and get the upper hand and provide "documentation". This does not reflect well on the business, and a simple apology would have gone so much further. Had I just received the phone call, this 1 star would have been removed. She can now not just blame her staff as she did on the phone, as this comment came directly out of her mouth. Original review: I hardly leave reviews, and never leave negative reviews at that. I am a positive person, and am able to find positives in almost everything. I also believe in second chances and giving the benefit of the doubt. I do believe that the community deserves an accurate depiction of a business before choosing where to receive service. I am beyond disappointed in my choice to go to Excel. I went here because it was convenient. I absolutely understand the impact COVID has on a small business and the measures that need to be taken. I worked in a small business for the better part of the shut down. I arrived for my appointment to stand in line out front. 100% fine, but there was no communication, nor was I greeted by anyone telling me what to do for my first appointment. By the time I got inside, it was a zoo. There were kids screaming, running, laying on the ground. There were people everywhere. The staff was spread so thin. I finally got checked in and waited my turn. I could hear, who I imagine was the office manager, arguing with a staff member about lunch times and how busy they were. How were they scheduled so busy during a time when they should be staggered? I took this appointment on my lunch time, and I ended up not even being able to look at frames because my wait time was so long and all of the assistants were so busy helping others. It felt like it was a waste to even make an appt. I decided I should come back to pick frames, and also give another chance. When I came back in, it was a bit quieter, and I imagined the time before was just a chaotic day. It quickly turned back into a zoo. I had read previous comments about the nationality bias, and I thought it was absurd, until I witnessed it myself. The clientele was privileged and got spoken to before me, and were even helped during my appointment time. The assistant helping me with my frames (which I brought in myself) got up at least four times during my appointment to talk with other customers. I felt so poorly treated, and there was very poor communication from the staff. The same person who I imagine was the office manager, was just as stressed and frazzled as before. I then waited the promised 2 weeks for my frames to be ready. I called when it was past the promised date. The gal told me they couldn't find my frames and would have to call the lab. I understand there are hiccups, but there was no apology, and no explanation. I said I wanted a call back that day so I knew the frames were not lost. I was promised that. Guess who did not receive a call. I then got a generic text that my frames were ready for pick up. I am thankful my frames were found, but cannot believe they didn't feel that I deserved a simple call back. I will not step foot in here again, and hope that they can take constructive feedback, rather than respond with defensive arguments. read more

I have been coming here for almost 10 years now (since middle school) and Dr. Gan has always been a great Optometrist, I still continue to come here even though I no longer live close to this office. My appointments have always been quick, easy, and Dr. Gan and her assistants do a great job with all of their eye/vision test and are great with explaining what they're doing. 10 years ago, I was introduced to the Paragon CRT contact lenses and they have definitely been worth the money. It's an excellent alternative to lasik and a big plus is that you no longer have to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day. You wear these lenses at night when you sleep, then enjoy 20/20 vision during the day. I highly recommend these for athletes and people who don't enjoy wearing glasses. read more

Dr. Stokes is amazing! Recently my daughter and I went in for an eye exam. This was the first time visiting this office. The staff was very nice from beginning to end. I've been to many optometrist offices in San Diego and by far Dr. Stokes is my favorite optometrist. She is friendly, personable, patient and explains everything in detail and with ease. Very capable team of optometrist and technicians. I have a very difficult prescription (high) in both myopia and astigmatism but Dr. Gan was able to nail it and for the first time in my life I have great vision with my new glasses. I have been able to order far sight glasses, glasses for reading and recently sun glasses. All work really nicely and the technicians that have helped me on the way have been great (Angie and Jason), unfortunately they don't work there any more. They have good frame options although in my case some frames worked much better than others. Ray Ban and Nike worked better than Lacoste, for example. The Lacoste frame we never quite got it to the perfect level of comfort, though I blame the frame more than anything else. Also they were good at managing a set of lenses that got completely scratched. We were able to use the warranty and they took care of them with no additional cost. read more

Dr. Gan always seems to be overbooked! I came in for an appointment and arrived five minutes early just in case any of her patients took shorter than expected. However, I had to wait an extra 20 minutes after my scheduled appointment time because the front desk workers seemed to be overwhelmed. There were a few irate patients and another person came in saying that they had the same appointment at my time! So that's proof that they double book people, and explains why Dr. Gan always is super rushed. This also reflects on the quality of her care; it took over a month for my glasses to come in, and I had to call them several times a week to inquire about the status of the order. The office is quite clean and there is a wide variety of frames to choose from . For some reason, the front door has a metal security grill over it...It looks really sketchy! read more

I found this office on my insurance list, and then checked them out on yelp and since they had great reviews , gave them a shot . I was very pleased with the office and entire staff. It was easy to make an appointment, and the receptionist was very helpful in letting me know what she needed from me to make my visit as easy as possible. When I got there, Dr Gan was very nice and explained everything she was doing, and why, and answered all of my questions very easily and friendly . Dr. Gan is an excellent optometrist! She is very friendly and takes her time with you throughout the eye exam. This is a welcome change from most optometrists I've had that simply just go through the motions... I didn't feel rushed and I am very appreciative of the fact that she took some time to go through the results of my eye exam with me, including telling me about the correction to my previous prescription, and not just the change in how bad my eyesight has gotten! It had been a long time since I had my eyes checked, so asked around for recommendations and was sent here. I arrived a little early and was taken in right away to the pre test by Travis, no waiting! After the Dr ran the standard eye tests, she explained that I was slightly farsighted. She explained that my eyes can focus to things up close, but they have to work slightly harder which explains why my eyes felt strained after prolong computer use. I was then helped by Amara (the one that recommended me to excel eyecare) with selecting glasses. She was helpful and explained that a blue light filter /anti glare would help protect my eyes when on the computer, which is exactly what need. Dr. Gan and her staff exceeded all of my expectations. I was looking for a new eye doctor and was impressed with her Yelp reviews relative to all others in the area. I have previously been seen by local eye doctors as well as Shiley Eye Institute, and Dr. Gan is the best of both worlds in terms of providing convenient, quality patient care as well as makes sure to make you feel you are heard. She takes time to get to know you as well, beyond any concerns you have. One of the most pleasant interactions I've ever had with eye doctors. She is very thorough in her exams, is incredibly knowledgeable, and has a gift of explaining things clearly and easily to patients. Her office has all the necessary and up to date machines as all the usual offices, and a wide selection of glasses. Her staff made it super easy to check in, obtain my prescription, and easily place an order to be shipped directly to my home - all in a few minutes. In terms of eye/glasses/contact exams, her prices were also very attractive relative to others in the area. I have VSP insurance and it was a breeze getting my coverage info, and pricing was very clear and cheap. After 6 months of distance learning, my two kids both complained that their vision were blurry when they looked at far distance, but either of them wanted to wear glasses. I was very anxious to figure out how to give them clear vision without glasses. When I asked around, a few of my friends referred me to Dr. Gan, the top CRT(Ortho-K) doctor in the nation. In August, 2020, I finally brought my two kids to Excel Eyecare to see Dr. Gan. I was impressed with their Covid 19 safety protocols. All the staff were wearing N95 masks, facial shields, isolation gowns and gloves. Office was very clean. Technician Vivian checked my two kids in and did pre-test for them. She was nice, but a little paranoid. She used alcohol to clean everything that was touched by customers, made the process slower, but I know we were safe. Dr. Gan was very professional and knowledgeable. I could tell she has a lot of experience in fitting CRT. After a few days of wearing the CRT designed by Dr. Gan, their vision improved to 20/20, no more glasses. Thank you, Dr. Gan! read more

Don't believe the 20 minute wait, I was there for 2 hours, I don't know if it was because I wasn't asian or because my insurance wasn't the right one, it looks like they overbook, Doctor was nice but the guy in the front sound it at all times like he's burnt out, most of his comments between him and his co-workers were rude, last thing most of the glasses they sale can not be use for your prescription, there is always that extra charge if you don't use their own. read more

I cant even review the facility since I was never able to get my appointment done. I arrived on time (maybe 5 mins early) and attempted to access office, and door was locked (which is not uncommon since COVID), but as I stood there and looked inside I could see no one at all. This is my first time trying this Optomistry so of course I was unsure, or if they were even opened since we are back into the "Purple Teir". I went back in to my car and called office and no one picked up. On the 3rd call attempt someone finally answered but by this time I was already driving home. She apologized and mentioned who she was the only one at the front desk because 2 staff were at lunch and one called out... Umm no one was at the front desk when I was at the door knocking... I've been seeing Dr. Gan since 2005, and have been very happy with her. She is a great optometrist. She has good staff who is courteous and friendly, and they do a good job of performing multiple eye function tests such as peripheral vision, eye pressure etc., before Dr. Gan performs the actual vision test. Dr. Gan always does a thorough job with the test. She has helped me find contact lenses that I am very comfortable with. There was also this one time where I had a pretty bad case of corneal abrasion, and she did an initial diagnosis of the issue and she promptly referred me to an ophthalmologist who successfully treated it. Overall, I have been very happy with Dr. Gan, and I highly recommend her! read more

My husband and I have been going to Dr. Gan for over 5 years now. She is a great optometrist with the newest high tech equipment. She also takes the time to explain things to you and has a great personality. I am always impressed that even though we only see her a couple times a year at most, she always recognizes us. My husband also had LASIK done recently and Dr. Gan provided excellent follow up care for him. I also appreciate the great selection of frames they offer and the fact that they will work with you on cost if you don't have insurance. They are also open on Saturdays, which is very convenient for us 9 to 5 ers, and I never have an issue getting an appointment. I also love that they send email and text appointment reminders. When it comes to my children's health or anything related to them, I tended to be very risk averse. Although Dr.Gan has been our optometrist for more than 10 years, I know her and trust her, I still agonized over whether or not to take one of my children for a much needed appointment. When we got there, I was blown away by how organized everything was: 1. We were notified to go in when it was our turn 2. The number of patients inside is controlled 3. The front door was kept open to allow fresh air to come into the already well ventilated office 4. All the staff wear N95 Masks, isolated gowns and gloves 5. All the equipment was sanitized before we go in for the test, and we were also offered sanitized wipes to sanitize it again to ease my worry 6. A tray is offered by the friendly staff to put any/all frames you tried/or touched for sanitization before made available for the next person The process ran like a well oiled machine and we were in and out in a jiffy. The friendly staff and the very organized process made the entire visit a pleasant one despite the mask wearing. Kudos to Dr.Gan and her amazing staff! read more

Dr. Gan is our eye doctor since we moved to San Diego in 2005. She is a great doctor and very friendly. Dr. Gan and her staff are very professional, from making appointments, examinations, frame/contact recommendations, insurance plan explanations, to follow-ups. I am very happy with their quality of the frames since my kids dropped my glass too many times and the glass still works great!!! Last visit I brought my two little boys to Dr. Gan office for eye checkup, Dr. Gan and her staff used their professional techniques to have their examination done and educated them how to protect their eyes. Dr. Gan was amazing! I've always had this problem with dry eyes which seemed to baffle other optometrists. However, as soon as I mentioned my symptoms, she was able to instantly treat it and offered helpful brands of contacts and solutions. Needing a new place for Vision, I was referred here by Amara. In the same plaza as 24 Hour Fitness, the parking here is quite nice. Once I walked in, I could tell this will be my new Vision spot to go to! I was greeted by Amara who got me checked in quick and I was off to pretesting with Penny, who is just as wonderful. Once in pretesting she explained what each test was before they were administered. Once done, I was escorted to the exam room to meet Dr. Gan. She was very quick with testing and I was out before you know it. Once I returned back to lobby, Amara was able to explain my benefits with ease and made me feel very comfortable with picking out frames and explaining the options I could receive with the cost associated. I went in for an eye exam to get new glasses in November. The staff were all careful and friendly, and Dr. Gan was professional and friendly as always during my exam. They have a very thorough and careful process for trying on and picking glasses frames due to the pandemic, and Jason was very patient, informative, and thorough during the glasses selection and fitting process.
