Finally, a repair shop that is trustworthy, competent and nice. This place is great. I have a 25 yr old vehicle running on biodiesel. They know what they are doing and keep at it until it's right. They also told me NOT to fix somethings in order to save me money on stuff that isn't crucial. They could have fixed it and charged me and I would have never known better. Some mechanics will blame everything on running alternative fuel but these guys know their stuff. They know how beneficial it can be for the engine and never use bidiesel as an excuse. When they are repairing my door latch, they scratched my car. They pointed it out to me and had it repainted. I am not used to that kind of conscientious mechanic...and even on my old hooptie. Vicky runs the front end of the biz and is sweet and great to deal with. Why not 5 stars? Well, they have been pretty slow with my vehicle. We have been bringing our two cars here for a while and the service has been good. But When I came to pick up my car, I see a guy(owner) getting out with 2 kids. The kids acted like it was their car. They opened the back and I see all their Costco purchases. What!?!! How do they think this was okay to drive my car to Costco!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!When my husband confronted him he said he does it all the time. He became confrontational with us instead of apologizing to us. To top it off the tank was bone dry and I almost didn't make it to the gas station. My mechanic told me it would take a cylinder-head replacement ( $4000) to make my 14 year old car pass a smog check. In shock, I started calling around, and found this place. The woman on the phone thought the description of the problem I was given was odd, and said to come by. They worked with me, around my schedule, and were always professional and straightforward. They found that the problem was a set of dirty valves and hoses.The result- they got my car to pass for around $400. I would recommend them for any smog work you need. They are a bit out of the way, but worth it. read more

I definitely would not bring my car here again. Came because my car was stalling/wouldn't go into gear at lights (it's an automatic). I told them what was going on and to maybe look at the transmission. The next day they told me that it was an external device plugged into my OBD port that was somehow making my car stall, and charged me 60 dollars to tell me that I should take it out. The next day I still have problems and end up going to a different mechanic who promptly figures out that it was my idle air control valve that needed to be replaced. If you go here I guess my advice would be to stick with only telling them the symptoms of your car problem and not what specific parts to check, because they clearly only checked the transmission and nothing else even though the idle air control valve is a relatively easy diagnosis. On top of everything else, they had that sort of communication where you feel embarrassed and stupid after talking to them about what the problem could be. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal since I don't know much about cars but if I can go to someone who doesn't make me feel dumb and gets the diagnosis right the first time that's where I would prefer to go. Also I'm pretty sure they accidentally broke my sunglasses when they were inside. read more

When the E36's radiator exploded and I started crop-dusting the Excelsior district, Mr. Tow Truck Driver recommended this place. If you have a BMW you know that when the radiator dies, the water pump usually commits hara-kiri in sympathy. So it could have been a steep repair. But these guys took care of me. The shop is nothing fancy but it's a family owned place with tons of regulars and they worked very hard to have me back on the road. They didn't mind that I ordered some of my own parts in so the repair would be cheaper. One of the guys who works here, by the way, was hotter than my radiator EVER got. read more

Everywhere else treated me like a stupid girl and I stupidly give them my money and thanked them for it. I can't say enough good things about these wonderful people! I found them on Yelp in an emergency breakdown situation, and they were so caring I returned for regular services. They are honest and you really know they are not going to take advantage of you. Most recently my check engine light came on, and they discovered a part they replaced previously was loose. Great place, very friendly service. Brought a older GMC Sierra in with a busted alternator. Had to tow it on Sunday from San Jose, a day Excelsior is not normally open. Came in Friday morning, after having trouble starting my car the night prior, took THREE times before my car even started. I knew it wasn't the battery, since my lights were on, it just wasn't turning all the way! Anyway, I got to my destination I decided to just deal with it in the morning! Of course, having to google issues, freaking me out on what may be the root to the problem! Nonetheless, I found a couple that I figured I'd go to that were close by, I had my heart set on Sal's Autohaus on San Jose Ave. So I went to work, left early enough to get to the shop early enough to find out they weren't even open, though it didn't state that anywhere, just doors closed, I guess no work today? Ugh! Frustrated, I went to my second choice, but boy, am I glad I did! Walked in, and asked Vicky I wanted service done on my car... She said sure the mechanic was just finishing up on an oil change. My car was seen, and unfortunately the problem is bigger than I thought, and I will probably decide to spend my money on a brand new car rather than my '98 mercedes. But Vicky was nice enough to even show me pictures of the issues going on with my car. I will definitely be coming back here with any other needs with my next car, or even my mercedes if I decide to put any more work into it anyway! Very helpful and very friendly!! I have always had a great experience at Excelsior Auto Care, My neighbor Eileen referred me to them about 6 or 7 years ago and they have been great at servicing both the Lexes XR330 and my Chevey HHR, I never go anywhere else when ever possible, I check in about every 3 months for oil change, brakes when needed, and they have checked thins out and fixed a lot of small problems for free from time to time. They always do their best to accommodate me and my schedule, even on the few times that I have showed up unexpectedly as a surprise visitor from time to time. They always squeeze me in even when they are busy, which is most of the time. I have been going to Excelsior Auto Care for the past four years and find them to be the most professional place to have all my cars services and repaired. My best story is I went to the dealership because I has a electrical short on my vehicle. After being quoted over 300 dollars for parts and labor to fix the problem I went to Excelsior Auto Care where they found the electrical short. Total cost $95.00 labor only and guess what no parts. Purchased a used vehicle, took it in for service at Excelsior Auto last week. They did a full assessment and itemized estimate on it. They were happy to answer specific questions about exactly what make & model of replacement parts they would use (tires, shocks, etc.) I approved the estimate. Picked up vehicle a few days later, all work done on time and according to spec. Fully itemized invoice came in about 10% under their estimate, and I was given a print-out of the front end alignment check. Vehicles drives, handles, and brakes noticeably better. All the staff I spoke with were friendly, competent, business-like. I had a few follow-up questions I called in about, their explanations were straightforward and clear. I've been going to Excelsior auto for the past 2-3 years and always thought that they were honest and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, my relationship with this establishment has come to an abrupt end due to attempted price gouging and what appears to be serious negligence on their part; negligence that contributed to me nearly causing a collision. Please read this review as my intention is to caution would-be customers against Excelsior Auto's safety standards, or lack thereof. I dropped off my car to get an estimate on brakes. I have an older SUV and knew that in addition to brakes, I would probably need rotors, etc. I was quoted over $900, which seemed excessive. I told the woman who runs the shop office that I wanted to get another estimate elsewhere, especially since Excelsior Auto charged me nearly $1,000 to fix my exhaust system approximately 6 weeks ago. I did say that they could proceed with an oil change, which is a service that I typically have them do routinely. I picked up my car later that day and attempted to drive it to my house, which is 4 blocks away from Excelsior Auto. I got no further than 3 blocks before my engine shut off inexplicably and my brakes completely stopped working! Absolutely nothing happened when I hit the brakes since the motor had completely cut out! I pulled the emergency brake and skid to a stop. Fortunately, I was able to stop my car before it flew through the intersection I was approaching. I was able to restart my car and pull it over to the side of the road. The oil light was illuminated on my dash board, which I do not think was a coincidence since Excelsior Auto just changed my oil. I called the shop immediately and told them what happened. The woman who answers the phone was dismissive and said "well, your brakes were metal on metal." Um, yeah, but that doesn't account for the engine failure! Also, my brakes are bad, but not so bad that they would just stop working completely. The woman said she would send the mechanic to where I was parked to check it out. While waiting for the mechanic, I started the car up again, let it idle and it died within 30 seconds. Very odd... The mechanic arrived within 10 minutes, looked under my hood, and announced that he had to run to the shop and would be right back. He came back 10 minutes later with another mechanic and some cables that looked like thin jumper cables. He and the other mechanic were under my hood for 10 minutes before he stated that he couldn't find a problem. Hmmm...so you emerged from under my hood after doing God knows what for 10 minutes, determined that nothing was wrong, but when I started my car, it was all of a sudden running fine now and the oil light is no longer on? Highly suspicious. The mechanic and I parted ways after he followed me around the block to ensure that my car was functioning fine, which at that point, it was. Now, on to the part where I went to Schwerin Automotive today and they quoted me $580 for the same job that Excelsior was going to charge me over $900 for! If there's a silver lining in all of this, it's the fact that I found an honest mechanic with a stellar reputation! I am not implying that Excelsior Auto did anything to my car deliberately, but it is pretty clear that they did something wrong; something that could have contributed to a fatal accident had circumstances been slightly different. Price gouging is one thing, but screwing up to this extent is incredibly irresponsible. Avoid this shop to save money and to possibly save your life! read more

My husband and I have been going to this auto repair shop since before Vicky and Marwan took it over from George. A number of years ago, AGAINST MY ADVICE, my husband bought this beater Chevrolet from George's son. It was filthy from stem to stern, and I rarely allowed myself to even get in that car. Suffice to say, one didn't need to be a psychic to realize that this car was trouble, and it was. We took it to Excelsior Auto after George retired. There was one problem with the computer system (now this was an OLD car, so the computer was primitive at best) where the wiring was so messed up it looked like five bowls of spaghetti. Marwan worked on that damned car for uncounted hours, and refused to give up on it, as my husband was out of work and they knew we didn't have money to replace that old bucket. They finally figured out what to do about the problem, and fixed it, and when we tried to pay them for the actual hours they spent on it, they wouldn't take our money. We had to BEG them to take a minimal amount, which we paid them over time, as we gathered our shekels together. I do not recommend this as a business practice, but that's the kind of people they are. Right now, with the economy slowing, they are not getting the business that they need to keep going. If you need a place you can really trust to repair your car without being ripped off, this is the place. I have never known them to recommend a repair that wasn't needed, nor do I have any knowledge of them increasing the charges. I have been totally satisfied and grateful to them for all they've done for us, ever since they opened the business. Happy car repairs! read more
