I had a couple glasses of their $2 house lager, which I was skeptical of at first because of the price, but the bartender reassured me it was good and a lot of regulars order it, and indeed, it turned out to be really smooth and a great deal, obviously. The name on the menu for the salad was actually "Julienne Salad" and it was incredibly delicious and could be considered what Elaine on Seinfeld would call "THE BIG SALAD!" The Ex (as it's now called) was my go to spot for many years when I worked downtown. I loved the Mexican Steak special on Tuesday, Fried Cod on Friday, Chicken Parmesan, the soup, salad with creamy garlic and their burgers. I never ordered pizza because I almost always ate alone. Returning there this week pretty much all my mainstays are gone, even the creamy garlic dressing; they still make a damn good burger tho, on a good if soggy bun with high quality bacon and very tasty sweet potato fries. We stopped at the Exchequer on a Saturday around 6 looking forward to a quick bite to eat coming from Millennium Park. We were promptly seated and it was obvious this pub had a great history/character. My wife had a corned beef sandwich and waffle fries. She enjoyed it. I had an Italian beef sandwich which was ok. It was a little dry and portions were not as strong as other restaurants. My oldest had a burger which was cooked perfectly and devoured. My youngest had pasta and enjoyed. This place is an old school restaurant that just walking in makes you forget about what's outside and going on in the crazy streets of Chicago. The decor is very nice, a bit old, but nice. Bathrooms are clean, so I don't really care how old it is as long as it's clean right? Went here for some drinks and apps on a Saturday evening. Place was busy, but staff were efficient. Not the most friendly of all waitresses, but she was nice enough. Drinks are unique and good. A bit pricy, but that's the Loop for you. Got some garlic bread, which wasn't worth writing home about, but the chicken wings were another story. Got the spicy wings and as a guy from Buffalo, NY, I know wings. These were crispy, sweet, and had that perfect bite that took a moment to set in. All in all it was a good experience and will definitely go back. I arrived before my order was ready and was greeted with great enthusiasm and kindness. They offered me a comfortable seat outside and a beer, on the house, while I waited. I haven't even tried my pizza yet, but it doesn't matter. I remember how great it was last time and the customer service would make up for a whole lot of bad chefary (I think I'll coin that word). However, I wouldn't have come here in the first place if I were worried about that. Really like The Exchequer...have been going here since the 1980's when I was in college...my SO also. The Exchequer never seems to disappoint, and it is always full of De Paul students (the De Paul business and law schools are just around the corner). Chicago Symphony Center is also just a block away on Michigan Avenue, so this is a good walking-distance spot to get a bite to eat before the Symphony. When you are in the Loop in this area there are two flagships for pubs - Miller's Pub and The Exchequer...and they are exactly one block apart on Wabash Avenue. Right now Miller's is undergoing rehab, so Exchequer has the business all to themselves. But to be honest, we prefer The Exchequer for most events. It is big - with two large rooms, has a nice, concise menu - with most pub-grub favorites, great selection of beer - both in bottle and on draft, and a free and easy atmosphere - even though it is loud. This is not a romantic kind of place, but if you are looking for good deep dish...this is it. Absolutely tip-top deep-dish pizza at The Exchequer...you'll find the cheese is thick and gooey, just like it aught to be. While some of the bigger names in pizza get a lot of the press in Chicago, The Exchequer can make a deep dish to compete with anyone. Give this place a try. Hard to find but worth the effort. We stumbled upon this place after getting a local recommendation. We ordered the medium size Chicago style deep dish pizza which was enough for 4 of us. The pizza was okay, I'm not the biggest fan of deep dish (which I've had more than a handful of times) so I'd say I'm a bit biased on that. This is located smack downtown so I would avoid parking. We took an Uber to this location because it was raining. This is a casual bar mixed in with sit down dining. Nothing fancy. They have Tv's in every single corner so you can see the football games from every seat in the house. Very sports centric. One huge recommendation would be their cheesecake! Pretty generic, large, dark old school pizza place. The same kind of Chicago / American type of old school restaurant. Massive interior and gets very busy on the weekends and dinner time. Really bustling atmosphere, and can get pretty loud. Staff is decently attentive but gets distracted with how busy things can be. Portions are MASSIVE, especially for the price. However it was really an issue of quantity, vs quality. The non-pizza food, especially the pasta, is really bland and not that tasty. It just feels like empty carbs that you are just eating for the sake of eating. The pizza, especially the deep dish, is pretty good. I really like the crispy crust option as well. The shrieking baby was the highlight of the experience, if that tells you anything. Stopped by here because it was close to my hotel and the ratings on Yelp weren't awful. Wasn't too hungry because I had totally gorged during a 3 1/2 hour rain delay at the Cubs game, but needed something to soak up the beer. The food was just average (had some soup and the appetizer combo. Onion rings weren't that good but cheese sticks were fine. Chicken wings were very spicy. Soup was bland). The service was friendly but so freaking slow! They seated a party of eight right next to us and immediately the baby in the stroller started shrieking. I'm not talking crying, I am talking shrieking...a high pitched sound that pierces your eardrums like a million needles. We just wanted to get our food and get out of there but it was hard to get the service. Perhaps the devil child with the larynx from hell colored my review, we can't be certain, but I am certain that I would most likely not go back here for a meal, it's just too slow. I used to work nearby in the loop and would always enjoy their food. A friend and I were leaving the Bears game on Sunday and needed a place to eat. Luckily they were open. Our waitress was great and on top of everything, I ordered the BBQ Babyback Ribs. My gosh, they were so good! It has been over 20 years since I have been there and forgot how great this place is. I highly recommend them for their ribs! I have had their deep dish pizza as well in the past and it is the only place I would ever eat deep dish pizza. I like thin crust overall. My friend had the Chicken Cacciatore and ate it all and said it was awesome, the best he has had in sometime. I didn't think I was going to eat the whole slab of ribs and I would take some home. The wife and I have been here a million times, since before there was a yelp, but I just now got around to reviewing it. If you are going to the CSO and want a couple of pitchers of beer and some chow, this place is ideal. It also works if you just want a couple of pitchers of beer. This time I ordered the fish and chips and the wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich. Both were good pub food. Waffle fries with cheese are also good. To be fair, o didn't try anything that they're known for. I tried the trio and it was ok. The poppers aren't bad but not great. The wings are the same. The waffle fries were good but those are hard to mess up. Service people are nice and attentive. That should never change. Seriously, they get blamed for everything, keep them the same. The entree is where they really lost me. The pork chop size is pretty good but where's the flavor? Nothing on the plate screamed appetizing. i want to this restaurant on Monday 9 2 2024 the waitress kept ignoring me finally, she came over and her attitude was very dry. we order pizza she came back with no silverware no napkins no plates. we had to ask for she places the pizza on the table and walk away we had to ask her for napkins, plates, she never came around and ask us if we need something else. finally, we had to get her attention for the bill. i inform her to put $25.00 on my visa gift card and the balance on my debit card. i said i only have $25.00 on my gift card she said ok. the total bill was $31.50. she came back and said the gift card was decline, i said that cannot be true i have never use it she said she tried twice. and it decline. i was embarrassed i have never had a card decline. i paid the bill and card the customer service on the card and they said she tried to bill the card for $31.00 not 25.00. $25.00 was available. i was extremely upset that she embarrass me saying my card decline. I enjoy coming to that restaurant. when I visit downtown i always eat there. I have been coming for over 30 years, but after that experience i will not be coming back. read more

Chili is the best that I have tasted ordered a big old bowl with a soft roll for $8 and some change. Loved it! I asked the waitress, who was very nice by the way, if it were an old family recipe. She nodded yes, and mentioned that it is a popular dish because of the taste, a kick with cheese and onions, but not so spicey your throat burns afterward. MEH! One big fat MEH! I walked in and it's pretty huge inside. The place is really old school, which I like. Old decor, booths and tables, etc, I liked it. The server came up to me promptly and got my drink order and gave me time to order. Here's where it went slightly array, she came up as if I were interrupting her texting, she had her phone out as she came to my table. Ok fine. I leave that alone. I ordered chicken tenders with veggies and the tenders were aight, but the veggies were buttery as buttery butter can give you. YUCK! I couldn't eat it, which stinks because I like veggies. But oh well, I guess. Then, I eat, and no one checks up on me. No one. She comes back to give me my check, and she was really pleasant, just lacking on the service portion. As I was getting out of my booth, another server walks into me, as opposing to wait for me to get out of the booth or walking around me. It was abrupt. I then hear her rushing to a table to tell them her shift was over. What's another 10 seconds to not run me over because you wanna leave??? I'm a little sad that this is the experience I had, but I'll check it off as "Do not come back to eat here again" purely because of service and buttery veggies.
