Big Al's Burger
Chris C.

We picked The Exchequer for dinner after a matinee show at The Auditorium Theater. Location wise, it was great. The decor was fine if you're into Al Capone. They had Marquee so the Cubs were on which is always a plus. The service was friendly, but a bit slow. The food was fine but not outstanding. My teens liked their burgers. The steak frites was a bit tough and my "medium" was more like "medium well." The fries were good though and the onions and butter on top gave things a good flavor. And this is just me being picky but I hate being served a steak on a plastic plate. I would go back but probably try a burger or sandwich.

Spectacular spot. Service fast & friendly, food fresh & delicious. Relaxed atmosphere on a Tuesday night. Bleu burger & full plate of fries. Unbeatable perfection after a symphony center show. Can't wait to return. A+

Ahh Exchequer! A place loaded with memories from my college days. This spot had a warm and cozy vibe, plenty of solid food options, and great service. 20 year old me would usually get a patty melt or chicken tenders. 40-something year old me shared a Caesar salad and deep dish pizza with my friend. The Caesar salad was fresh and flavorful. We got the mob pizza which has sausage, pepperoni, garlic and Italian beef. It was cheesy and garlicky! So happy that this spot is here and is just as I remember it. I definitely feel at home whenever I'm here.

Here from Cali and I've wanted to try Chicago deep dish pizza since forever so here I am. This place came highly recommended from the staff at the hotel we were staying at. It was a rainy Saturday night and it was very busy and packed. It is a mafia themed restaurant and we were told that back in the day Al Capone dined there frequently. They serve a little of everything and also have a full bar. But you already know I came for the pizza. For starters I ordered the loaded cesar salad and it was delicious. I also ordered a personal size Chicago style deep dish veggie pizza and it lived up to all of my expectations. Thank you so much and a special Thank you to our server Alex.

Just off the Amtrak at Union Station. Checked into a hotel. On short walk and searching Yelp for brew pub and pizza around me - here I am. Pub has a lively convivial vibe not far from the waterfront. Starting with a good floral fresh hop IPA. TVs to watch a little sports. I'm sitting at the bar - cool bartender. And playing some really upbeat music on the jukebox. right now Johnny B Good from the 50s or 60s is grabbing my attention. Nice start to the first trip to Chicago. House salad (small is big) with olives, tomatoes, red onion, fresh crispy lettuce, and some croutons. I prefer olive oil and vinegar. Very good! 8 inch personal pizza wit pepperoni, jalapeño and red onion. Good!

Came to Exchequer for dinner. The place gives old school Chicago vibes. The restaurant is dimly lit and decorated with posters. Our server was very friendly and checked in on us without being too much. We ordered the goat cheese appetizer. The portion size was very big. The tomato sauce was well balanced and it tasted great with the Italian bread. I ordered the chicken parm sandwich with fries with my appetizer. The chicken was crispy and flavorful, I wish there was just a little more sauce on the sandwich. Overall great experience! Definitely a place to check out.

Went here for the connected speak easy which was such a fun little hidden gem . Decor is amazing, lots of history. Service is amazing and little snacks were perfect . Can't wait to go again .

Best Patty Melt EVER!!!! Outstanding crispy waffle fries and onion rings. Delicious pizza. The speakeasy theme is Chicago through and through making for a vibrant dining experience. Add the best friendly service with top shelf cocktails and you get a wonderful dining experience.

Had a 12" thin crust with sausage and mushrooms and the Bourbon glazed Salmon delivered. Came on time... Crust wasn't soggy from the box and was devoured instantly. Would love to come back and try dine in.

First time checking this place out. It's got some good history - highly recommend reading up on it if you love Chicago history. Place was clean and a pretty straight forward American fare bar/restaurant. Got a table in mid-afternoon on a Saturday without issue. Food was ok. Waitress was really nice - felt bad because I think she was the only one waiting tables and doing stuff behind the bar. Definitely understaffed. Overall, good experience. I think the Chicago history is the draw.

Deep Dish Pizza

Came here for authentic deep dish pizza and was very happy with our dining experience! Our server was very helpful in choosing the right sized pizza for our group. We ordered all meat and one with chicken, both were delicious and very hearty! Every bite is full of cheese. The side salad was perfect to cleanse the palette between cheesy bites of the pie. We came at lunch which was not busy and the restaurant was rather empty. We were able to fully enjoy our meal without much distraction. Overall, highly recommend this restaurant in the Loop for authentic deep dish pizza!

Big Al's Burger wings Cheese Curds

Food and service were super amazing. We got the Big Al burger, buffalo and sweet chili wings, onion rings and cheese curds. Everything was so good and quick service. Don't skip out on their dips too. I got the chipotle aioli and added it my burger... FIRE!! Staff was alll very nice too and they have cool memorabilia on the walls from Chicago. Definitely a must go if you're here.

Came here on a whim and was so pleasantly surprised. Definitely has old school famous Chicago vibes which I love!! Old movie posters from 101 years ago!!! Yes 1920s! Filled bar with happy patrons and back multiple restaurants spaces it was huge! The service was so attentive and kind. Our server Mo paid great attention when we had to make small adjustments for our child's menu. My kids burger & fries was delicious and huge! The small salad is plenty for 2! My husband and I split a full rack of ribs and broccoli instead of fries and it was soooo tasty, savory, & fall off the bone good that I just used a fork ha! The pomegranate martini was super tasty! Definitely a great choice for a date, bar, or family dinner!

Warm and lovely British pub with delicious pies and efficient service…read more My dining partner and I tried the mushroom and kale and the rocking vegan pies. The mushroom and kale pie was nice and cheesy and the rocking vegan pie was more savoury, with a variety of vegetables and chickpeas as stuffing. The crust was neither too soft nor too crunchy. The highlight of the meal was the curry chips: potato wedges lightly fried with masala and curry leaves. The dipping sauce that came with the chips reminded me of tikka masala sauce, and paired beautifully with the chips. Dessert was toffee pudding: the caramel sauce that came with the pudding was delectable - the pudding itself was excellent and not overly sweet. We tried a variety of NA beers, and I was pleased with how many options they had. Service was quick, and we were well looked after. The ambiance is warm, with dim-ish lighting and a lot of dark wood. The restrooms were gorgeous - special shoutout to the lovely floral wallpaper. Overall, I highly recommend Pleasant House - the vibe is chill and understated and the food is stellar.

The sausage was very tasty, the breading on the outside was incredibly crisp, light, and the egg inside was cooked well. Both the steak pie and the chicken pie were very good. The chicken pie I think really needed the chutney that you can get separately. But that made it so much better and made it my preferred pie. The steak and ale pie was better than the chicken pie as a standalone, but needed a bit more gravy I think to elevate it. Sticky toffee pudding again was delicious. Surprisingly light, not overly dense so I was glad it came with the custard which was very flavorful. Overall, will definitely return!

I had been wanting to try Industry Ales when it opened and was glad to have had the opportunity to finally check it out! I was slightly thrown off, as the dining tables are at the front of this space, and the bar is all the way at the back. In fact, my friend at first glance thought it was a sit-down dining establishment sans bar seating. We found our way to the bar and posted up at two seats. We were offered menus right away and found the bartender extremely knowledgeable. This was super helpful when facing down an encyclopedia of ales. He offered samples when we explained what we were looking for. That is service above and beyond, especially on a bustling Friday early evening. The brews were tasty, but I couldn't really discern what I was drinking apart to say it was a lighter Belgian Ale. Wine is more in my wheelhouse, but always good to change things up, especially when a person has the opportunity to be guided by an expert. The people seated nearby had ordered the tuna tartare which looked delicious. In fact, all of the menu is globally influenced (think: pizza samosas, pierogis, Korean BBQ) in addition to the classic brewpub favorites. In addition to the Brewpub, this location features the Millroom, a speakeasy-style lounge. I did not have a chance to check that out on this visit. Definitely a cut above the usual sports bar and a place to expand one's knowledge of brews.

We were there on Friday, so the fish and chips were all-you-can-eat. So crispy on the outside and flakey on the inside. So yummy. The chips were crispy and paired perfectly with the fish splashed with the malt vinegar. The green peas were good, but my favorite was the Stovies. If you've never had proper Stovies, this is your chance to try them. Potatoes and onions with bits of roast kind of like mashed potatoes or a very thick stew. So yummy. Whiskey fans, you'll love the huge selection along with the impressive beer selection. Yelp should really hype this as a whiskey bar, too. It more than qualifies. The cuisine is phenomenal. Definitely a place to bring a large party on your first visit, so you can sample a multitude of wonderful creations. Pro Tip: if you can tolerate a large quantity of fish, visit on a Wednesday for their AYCE Fish & Chips. I've had many hum drum AYCE dinners that are drab and only fill you up. Not this one. It's a great meal and a great deal. The Shepherd's Pie was fabulous, as was the Bangers and Mash. They've created a Haggis Burger that has to appease Americans, yet, still be haggis. A tall order since most would hate "true" haggis. Fear not, it's not your grandfather's haggis, it is a tasty burger. The fries were great but I'd recommend the Tattie Skins. We tasted so many different malts it was hard to pick a favourite. No foolin' they had island malts, highland malts, speyside and even a couple from the lowlands. Easy to spend over two hours in this public house. We did. Can't wait to get back to this town. This is a must! 02/26
