I was staying right down the street at the Palmer House Hilton and wanted to try this spot. The exterior gave me a great vibe, see picture. The interior decor is old school, they have movie posters from Psycho on the wall and the mug shot of Frank Sinatra being arrested, great stuff to see all around the restaurant. The Exchequer Pub is right as you walk in the front door, the dining room is further back. They have great pizza, according to the person sitting next to me. For dinner, I got the Capone's Rigatoni with sausage and vodka sauce (A grade). This was a nice size serving, I could not finish everything. The service was very friendly, thanks Moe, who wore a Toronto Bluejays hat. The prices are great considering you are downtown in Chicago and you definitely get your money's worth. I washed it all down with a Zombie Dust - pale ale 6.5% ABV (Munster, IN). read more

Good old Chicago gangster vibes inside. The food was okay. The meatball appetizer included two big meatballs with garlic bread and that was good. We got a thin crust pizza and that wasn't anything special and not crispy to the crust. The service was okay, but sometimes ended up with an empty glass for a time. We came two nights in a row even though the first night we received the wrong order. That's how good we thought the pizza was! The favors are incredible and the crust is like a classic Italian breadstick. The edges get baked a little more toasty and gives a fantastic texture contrast to the gooey cheesiness of the pizza toppings. My husband loved the pepperoni and I ordered a build-your-own with pickled jalepeños, sliced tomatoes, and green bell peppers. I wish the jalepeños were fresh. I specifically asked if they were and they said they were-but they weren't. Even then-delicious pizza! The only two critiques were the smell of cigarettes most of the time we ate, and our sodas never got refilled. STILL-pizza was good enough that we overlooked these elements and would go back again. read more

I ordered a small thinking that I was going to eat some and save some for lunch tomorrow and I ended up eating the whole thing. This would be a five star visit, but our server wasn't on her game this day. She wasn't the most attentive and was hard to track down. When ordering I asked if they had French dressing and she said yes. I was so excited and I ordered a side salad with extra French dressing. We talked about how a lot of places don't have French and how I like to use the extra dressing for my pizza. When my salad was delivered, it was served with ranch dressing. Confused, I asked for the correct dressing, and she told me they don't have French. My friend ordered buffalo wings and pizza. Our pizzas came out, but her wings never did. After waiving our server down to ask about the wings, she looked over our order, went to the kitchen and came back five minutes later. She said that they just finished cooking them. We got our appetizer after the entrée but luckily they were good. Again, food was great. Service was iffy. I'd definitely return back here and give them another try. read more

If you're into Chicago Mafia History, circa 1930's, you should visit The Ex at least once. Walk around, check it out. We were advised to make reservations or expect a long wait on a weekend night but it was noticeably under occupied the Friday night we went. The thin crust pizza was strange in that the entire toppings came dislodged from the crust as if they had been laid like a sheet on a bed of baked dough. Weird. The taste was okay but for Chicago Pizzaland, No. The Mediterranean-style ribs were good, expecially for someone who loves ribs but doesn't care for most versions of house BBQ sauce. The bar with booths up front seems small but when you go to the rest room, you get the full monte and it's got at least two very large rooms in back. When it's full of people, it should be very festive and noisy--a good place for large parties. But on a slow night it feels like a dark funeral parlor with all the caskets closed for the night. There are so many eateries and bars, upscale and low-down, in Chicago that it's hard to recommend The Ex unless, as stated, you're into the Capone historical era or have a large, rambunctious group to feed and water. In the hands of the right industry designer and world-class chef, this place could be made into a gold mine without destroying the Old World flavor. Downed most of the food before pics! Real Chicago pizza is thin crust so don't be fooled by false advertisements. Ordered the herbed salmon, but was able to choose blackened seasoning instead. It had a great kick. The broccoli was fresh, but bland. We don't eat any meat/chicken and let the waitress know, but it ended up they use chicken broth in their rice and potatoes so she brought us a house salad and it was a generous portion. Also ordered a thin crust veggie pizza. Great sauce and loved the vegetables under the cheese which added to the flavor. Crust was a bit dense, but they do have a thinner crust option called "crispy" crust that I'd be interested in trying. This restaurant was recommended by Mr. Chicago so named by the newspaper bc he's been the concierge for The Congress Hotel for 20 years. read more

The drinks were VERY strong...my mule was mainly vodka, no ginger beer or lemon or anything. Maybe the bartender wanted to give us a nice buzz and warn us about it, or messed up a little. They make cocktails too. Had a Sazerac and my friend had the Old Fashioned. I was pleasantly surprised with everything here. Wanted a place to watch the Dallas Mavericks take on the OKC Thunder and a good something to munch on other than room service and the hotel bar food. I like bubbles and red wine...the Prosecco and Chianti were not high end but reasonably priced and tasty. I did go outside my usual box and had a fabulous martini given to me by the bartender. Now, for the best part- I am a NY Style Pizza lover. Always the pizza style I choose. I haven't really had pizza in almost 3 months though. I was trying to consume less gluten and gluten free crusts don't please my taste buds. But the customers beside me were eating a Chicago style pizza. It looked amazing. I thought "when in Rome and what the heck! " I ordered a supreme type Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. Lots of meat (Italian sausage, pepperoni, etc) and mushrooms, bell pepper, and onion. It was awesome!!! The crust was the perfect thickness and almost had a buttery fried texture, not chewy or doughy like the ones I have had in the past. This delicioso crust was topped with red sauce,cheese, meats and veggies, then more cheese. Love at first bite. Unbelievably yummy and what a way to break a pizza fast. The atmosphere is pretty cool too. It's a former Speakeasy and has mobster memorabilia and old 50s movie stars on the walls. Definitely get the feeling you might have found Ole Blue Eyes or Elvis here when they were around! Make it a stop on any authentic Chi-town experience. No regrets. read more

First time dining here last night, we had a birthday celebration and used the private room. Let's get the BS out of the way, the server was trash, I don't know if he didn't care because he was guaranteed a 20% tip or that he cared more about watching the game Sitting down at the bar than checking in on us. But I'm jumping ahead. Most of the party was there and wanted to order something the drink. But once he heard we weren't all there he cut us off mid sentence and said he'll be back in 10. When we were allowed to order he brought out the wrong drinks and try to gaslight us. But hey at least we got A round of drinks because he never came back for refills. The pizza preordered was great but the extra food we ordered would have probably be great too if it was warm, he never came back to check. So if you want some good pizza and full glass go to the bar. I cannot believe that's taken me over a decade to discover this Chicago gem. My family and I stumbled across it by accident while walking back to our hotel following a Chicago Architectural Boat Cruise. As we entered the building, it felt as though we traveled back in time. We were greeted by friendly staff and seated quickly. While Exchequer Restaurant & Pub is best known for its pizza, we all ordered burgers. My husband enjoyed the Big Al's burger, and I ordered the Prohibition. Instead of fries, we also each opted to have a salad as our side item. Everything was delicious! The burgers were huge and cooked to perfection. The salad was fresh, and the Honey Mustard dressing was quite yummy too. And let's not forget the Basket of Onion rings that we shared as an appetizer. They were lightly breaded and perfectly crisp. If you've never been to Exchequer Restaurant & Pub, I highly recommend that you stop in for a bite. Your taste buds will thank you. I work downtown and came here with my coworkers to celebrate ones upcoming nuptials. I had never been here before, but I know that its a fairly popular sit-down place, from what I heard from others. I was pleasantly surprised, as I want really expecting much We ordered a small pizza as an appetizer, which wasn't bad. My boss favors the impossible burger, which is her go-to menu item. My coworkers ordered a burger and the Mediterranean salad, and I got the taco salad. It was pretty good, I thought. I ordered it with beef, but you can also get it with chicken. It was filling and I'd consider ordering it again. I'd actually prefer ordering it to go, I think, because whatever container they put it in might make it a little easier to eat than from the plate. I'd give their bar a try sometime for after-work cocktails, too. I know that there are plenty of business in the area (mine included) that host parties of all sorts here, so it's a good for that too. read more

Exchequer embodies the second city in restaurant form. It doesn't want any attention, it produces a reliably good and consistent experience and there's a hint of mystery because you don't necessarily know a lot about it (at least I don't). I want to give this place a major shout out. We were headed to a play as two families and it's impossible to find a restaurant that will take the reservation for 8, turn us around in time for a show etc. but exchequer did all of that. Our kids loved the pizza (so did I unofficially as I snuck a piece), the harvest salad was great and I buried the lede but they had me at Schlitz is on tap. They handled many walk ins, had more than friendly and responsive service and did everything we hoped and more. Highly recommend! read more
