Apparently, there was a transformer that blew in the Mt.Penn area so everyone decided to come to the Exeter Family restaurant. Suffice to say, it was really busy. Some of the waitresses were clearly frustrated and they didn't hide it. I don't know, I would capitalize on this day....knowing this is most likely an isolated moment. Good food at reasonable prices; this is an Exeter favorite. This is a good place to go as a family or for meeting people because they have something for everyone. We've been there a number of times in the past 10 years and never had a bad experience. Staff are friendly and the place is clean and well kept. Place was crowded on a Saturday morning. My husband & I can't understand why. The food was horrible. Seriously, how can you screw up an American cheese omelet with bacon? They eggs were dry. They had 2 slices of cheese inside the eggs. & charged extra to have cheese added to it (because of the dryness). The service was slow but I don't think it was the waitress's fault. The service was slow because they only had one waitress working a whole room to herself. Took my table of eight 30 minutes to receive are drinks. It took almost 2 hours for us to receive our food. Even with the time it took the waitress was very apologetic and nice. I ordered a burger which wasn't the best but definitely not bad in any aspect. The price was reasonable but in the evening the waitress lost our check and decided to cheapen our meal for our wait and trouble. As far as diner restaurants go, this one is a great choice! Much better and more inventive menu than a typical finer. Great salad bar and specials. We had Ashley as a waitress, and she was wonderful!! Very friendly, and she went above and beyond for us with prepping our food to take home with some extra ice. This is one of the best diners in the area. The staff is very friendly and polite. The food is always good and comes out farely quickly. My husband ordered the steak and eggs and it was done perfectly ( he is very picky about having his steak cooked to his liking ). I had the SOS and it was great. Defiantly very large portions for a good price. We live about 25 minutes away and we pass about 5 or 6 other restaurants on our way here but we'd rather drive a little further for good food. My review is in regards to something other then the food. My children and I eat here as often as we can. The food is good and most of the staff is very friendly. We were there for breakfast and when I paid the cashier ended up charging me twice. I went back the next day and spoke to Eddie the manager. He told me he would look into it and get back to me. Well .... he did, he called me and explained what happened, he told me exactly what was going to happen ....and it did. I came here after a long drive home from South Carolina and I just wanted to come get something to eat at one of my favorite diners right when we walked in we were accompanied by a very rude worker she asked how many and we told her and she grunted and walked away the man working was very nice and he wasn't even our waiter and we tipped him instead because he help us more with questions and everything we ordered and it took 2 hours for us to get our food and then when we asked for refills it was a problem and she was very rude the whole time we said can we have our check this wasn't a present visit here and she got very angry and stormed away like a 5 year old flailing her arms and saying and I quote (F these ppl I hate this job) and then slammed our receipt down I never have this service I've came here since I was 5 with my family this had to be the worst service I have ever had here I came at 2am saturday the 27th and it was the older later I'm glad to say my tip went to somebody more deserving but I'm upset to say I will never ever come back to this place ever again it was such a horrible experience!!! read more

EFR has become our home away from home...we enjoy meeting up with other "regulars" and friends and family. The staff is friendly and efficient. It says something about the servers when they remember what you usually drink! Expect a wide selection of meals, well stocked salad bar, and hearty soups. We seniors have great breakfast and dinner specials at reasonable prices. It gets crowded, but with the side room, there is never a long wait. THE best diner in the Reading area! read more

I'm only giving one star because I can't give zero. We went there yesterday as a large group after my cousins funeral. We had a reservation and a fixed price menu (three sandwiches, two soups). The service was excruciatingly slow, the cold sandwiches were underwhelming and the hot soup was lukewarm at best. I remember this place having excellent food and a decent price point back when it was kind of a dive. Since they prettied it up, the food has gotten worse and the help has gotten surlier. We love this restaurant. We eat breakfast here every weekend that we can & numerous lunches & dinners. The food is hot with a large menu to choose from. Christian panini with their Mac n cheese is my daughters favorite. My favorite is breakfast. You can order your omelet any way you want it. They have a Belgium waffle with fresh fruit on top. Delicious ! Their coffee is always hot & fresh with bottomless refills. They remember you every time you come & are really glad you returned. My wife and I try different restaurants and diners and decided to give this one a try. I went there hoping to experience a good chicken croquettes meal. Could this place compare to our favorite Diner or others, which make great croquettes and serve good food? We were hopeful. My wife also decided on the chicken croquettes. First, the salad bar's seafood bisque was okay, but we have had better. As for the chicken croquettes . . . they were terrible, and I feel awful saying that because I never complain and am always gracious. The gravy was also tasteless, bland, and terrible. The stuffing (I doubled up on my starches) was also subpar. I am not a person to complain, so I was gracious to the service--which was good. No issues there. Exeter Family Restaurant has entered our regular rotation this past year. The staff is always pleasant and attentive and the food is the best in Berks County. My husband and I love the salad bar and I am a BIG fan of the Bruschetta Chicken that is right now only served as a special, but I am hoping they put it on the regular menu in the future. Anything I have ever ordered there was exceptionally good. The restaurant itself is very clean and bright and they are always playing good music. If you have the option of one of the chain restaurants or EFR....I would choose EFR all the time hands down. They are the BEST in Berks County. YUM read more

I came here with my parents. And the service was okay. But... Waited 15 minutes before having our order taken. Then we had to wait about 45 minutes to receive our food. My mom ordered the fried chicken and it was still pink. So we sent it back but the chef had the waitress inform us that it is indeed cooked and that we can choose to eat it or send it back. (Who says that? Pink meat means it's not done.) My step dad ordered spaghetti and meatballs, and the pasta was cold and the meatballs were as mushy as dog food. And all of the food was very bland. I used to come here all the time but they have gone down hill. Last time I was here I found out they no longer serve some of the foods I like So I stopped coming. Decided to give them a second chance and came back. Ordered my food which they don't have even though it's on the menu. Unreal. Then the waitress was extremely rude. She slammed our drinks on the table and just dropped my plate on the table in front of me. I ordered a grilled ham and cheese with French fries. She didn't write down the order. I received a grilled cheese instead of grilled ham and cheese and no fries. I told her I ordered fries and she said fine. My husband called at 8:56 on Sunday morning to order our family breakfast for Mother's Day. He was told 30 minutes his order would be ready. Now mind you we as a community we should al understand and know some places may take more time. So he arrived at 9:15 full knowing he would have to wait a bit. He first and for most experienced many already frustrated customers and a very frustrated lady taking way to many orders over the phone. Then one gentleman,if in a pandemic we want to call him that, came into the restaurant without a mask! Nothing said to him and coughing quite a few times. Now again my husband called at 8:56 told 30 minutes. My husband came home at 11:00 with no food and no signs of them getting anytime soon. This is 100% uncalled for. Sat in a booth and had a roach run across my leg and down onto the floor. We approached the owners son who said he would move us but instead went into his office and never returned. After then approaching the host, he then went into the office and came out only to let us know the owners son said he set us a table but we never moved even though we never seen him again after first speaking with him about the situation. To make it worse he only offered to take $7.00 off of our bill, who in the hell knows where he came up with that figure. Worst customer service ever. Exeter Family Restaurant has been our to-go place for diner food. The food is good service is great and my wife really likes the soup and salad bar. Recently we went there for lunch and I ordered the Southern BBQ Smoked Beef Brisket sandwich. It was huge and tasted great. Overloaded with chunks of smoked beef, slaw, fried onions, and BBQ sauce. Seniors here. We used to eat here 2X a month. Very Good salad bar. Then 2? years ago they printed a new menu. Usually bad news anywhere, and the prices went up. As most places nowadays. But their coffee always tasted like bad mud to me. And their filling- yuk. Oh, the senior dessert shrunk to 1/2 size last couple times we were there. I ordered a meal that came with 2 sides, a soup, and a salad. However, there was only one soup available, and I can't eat salad. Also the available sides were all veggie dishes. So I asked if I could skip all 4 of these items I am paying for in the $13 meal, and instead just get a small order of mozz stix. This would actually save them the food I said I can't eat, as I would throw it all away. The small app i asked to replace all 4 items with was like $5. Yet the owner laughed in my face when i asked and embarrassed me and my family. I was hoping the food would make the trip better, but it was clear the sauce was straight from a can.
