They listen to what we have going on and provide info on procedures done, issues with our pet, etc. In the past we had to sedate our dog just to get his nails clipped but here, the vet techs were able to do it with him wide awake. I truly believe this is because of their calm and compassionate care. I appreciate the staff's patience with my slightly anxious dog. One morning, Kimo suddenly became very ill. He was nauseated, vomiting and regurgitating, and could not keep even water down. I called River Road Pet Clinic, and they squeezed him in that morning, which I appreciated. They gave him medication, placed him on IV fluids, and took X-rays. I was told they could not find anything seriously wrong, and Kimo was sent home at around 10 a.m. Over the next six or seven hours, he did not improve. He became progressively worse. By then River Road was closed, so I rushed him across town to Veterinary Emergency Group. Within minutes of arriving at VEG, they performed an ultrasound and discovered that Kimo's gallbladder had ruptured. I was told it had likely happened much earlier, possibly the night before or that morning. By that point, there was nothing that could be done to save him, and I had to make the heartbreaking decision to end his suffering. The following day, a veterinarian from River Road called to ask how Kimo was doing. I had to tell her that he had died. She said she was sorry and wished she had been there. I cannot adequately describe how upsetting that response was after what had happened. My dog had presented that morning with severe gastrointestinal symptoms, could not keep water down, received approximately $700 worth of treatment and diagnostics, and was sent home without the condition that ultimately killed him being identified. Hours later, an emergency hospital found the problem almost immediately with an ultrasound. I understand that medicine is not perfect and that not every condition can be diagnosed immediately. But based on my experience, I believe Kimo's symptoms warranted more investigation, additional imaging, or a referral to an emergency or specialty hospital rather than simply sending him home. Knowing that he spent those final hours becoming increasingly sick and uncomfortable is something I will carry with me forever. I was also extremely disappointed that River Road never offered to refund or even discuss the roughly $700 I had paid that morning for care that ultimately failed to identify the emergency Kimo was experiencing. Kimo was my baby, and I trusted this clinic to recognize when something was seriously wrong with him. That trust is gone. Based on what happened to Kimo, I cannot recommend River Road Pet Clinic. If your pet is acutely ill and you feel something is seriously wrong, I would strongly consider going directly to an emergency veterinary hospital where ultrasound and other advanced diagnostics are immediately available.

I took him to an emergency vet clinic and he received 2 vials of antivenom. But they were not giving him antibiotics nor were they trying to manage the swelling and he was struggling to breathe. If you don't know how a rattlesnake bite works, they have e poison glands, that are compressed by muscles and inject the venom. HOWEVER, when the muscles relax, the glands go back to normal size sucking some of the blood, etc from the victum back in. So, if the snake had last bitten a rat, say, that rat blood and crap was injected into your dog. So a conversation with the Dr was resisted, I paid the bill and took my dog to my vet at CDO pet clinic. She immediately put him on antibiotics because she is knowledgeable and experienced. They then gave him laser treatments for the swelling, and pain meds. That within 30 minutes. When I left, I had a dog in little pain, breathing easy and on antibiotics for the crap the snake put into him. Within 2 days he was 90 percent better.

I never once asked about the price of their service so I'm not quite sure why she thought the price would be an issue for me here.

Unfortunately, the diagnosis led to that awful decision that no pet parent wants to make. Dr. Miller was so kind and compassionate and called me several times, no vet in my past has EVER done that. Chico (my senior chihuahua's) troubles at Benarda Veterinary Hospital began in November of '21 with…read morewhat I thought was going to be a prescription renewal for dental antibiotics, and to check on a chronic cough. He had badly decayed teeth and a heart murmur-- so surgery had always been discouraged. Dr. Daroowalla however, declared with certainty by phone that Chico was not as old as thought, and was in good health. She continued (by phone) that he had a good chance to flourish for at least a couple more years after a full set of tooth extractions. She said his cough would go away with the extractions, too. I was shocked but elated-- and then made it clear that I am indigent poor. The staff was supportive, and the office manager said they have a great payment program to help people like me. It was an emotionally charged decision. Even though I knew I should insist on continuing with antibiotics for the rest of his natural life, I wanted dearly to give Chico a stab at healthy longevity and I trusted Dr. D's assessment, as I had known her for many years. I caved and said yes, with high hopes. It would be the worst "yes" I ever said. Post-surgery was rough, and he spent his 1st night lying in his urine in the unheated laundry room because he was disoriented. But always the trooper, he pulled through and we enjoyed our last Xmas together. In a few weeks he started coughing again, and panting heavily. Back to Benarda we went. Up, up, climbed the vet bills. He coughed and panted as his lungs filled with fluid. When I knew he was dying, I called Benarda again. "Chico's really miserable and I'm broke. Can you please put him down for me?" No, we're not a blank check, said the staff person. "Oh. Well he can die at home." No! they said, get him to a vet ASAP! They gave me a list to call. They all charged at least $100 except for PACC, and that wasn't an option. So Chico died in my arms. He was comfortable as he was able, he was in his home, and he was with his Mom. Feb. 10, he died of congestive heart failure. He passed peacefully, and I buried him in my yard under my pomegranate tree. Tears were beyond my control for weeks. A couple of weeks later, not a word from Benarda and I had questions. I asked to meet with both Dr. D. and Aynsley, the office manager, to talk about what happened with my deceased dog, her choice of treatment and the bills that incurred. Only Anysley was available - the Dr. remained frustratingly out of sight. Aynsley was polite but defensive, and made a reference to crap shoots. I guess it's the lack of conscience at Benarda that lingers every month as that $63 payment saps my small Social Security check (my only source of income). As a former business owner myself, I ponder how someone like Dr. Daroowalla especially, did not reach out to me. An acknowledgement, a condolence, even a goodwill financial gesture, anything-- to help heal my grief around the circumstances of my beloved dog's demise would have been so appreciated... I will be paying for Chico's death until February 2025. I am wiser now about standing by my intuition. Intuition is what people of limited means depend on in lieu of financial backup. Sadly, we who need the love of 4-legged companionship the most are often those who can least afford them.
