Vet techs are like a revolving door. Always a different one. Some know what they are doing and others don't. No consistency. When I requested having the same one to give subcutaneous fluid to. My cat, in renal failure, the office manager was extremely rude. She said it wasn't proper to let me know which vet techs were there on Saturday so I couldn't get the same one. Some hurt my cat with the procedure and don't get the proper amount in. Others are ok. The office manager could not have been more obnoxious. She made a mountain out of a mole hill. I have every right to want a certain vet or vet tech that I feel comfortable with. I will never go back. read more

This review is specifically for Dr Collins. I have been a 10 year customer and up until then would have highly recommended Briarcrest. I will highly recommend Dr. Macki. I took my Bella in to see Dr. Collins. At that point of time she was not in crisis. X-rays were taken which weren't necessarily definitive but with Bellas symptoms I felt it reflected the issue. Hindsight I should have done one more suggested test for Valley Fever. Dr. Collins prescribed a 3 day dose med for arthritis. On the 3rd day, when the prescription ran out, my Bella had deteriorated. Called at 8:00 am sharp and left a message for the doc for more med or additional help. NO RETURN CALL. I did leave in my message that my cat was in pain. By the end of the day STILL NO CALL. Took Bella to Emergency in severe pain , determined possible nerve issue. Due to many obstacles for care at that point we chose to euthanize her. Following Monday, still NO CALL FROM Dr. Collins. This shows lack of concern for her patients. I get it, Saturday's they are only there until 1:00. STILL a quick return call suggesting emergency would have been the right thing to do if a caring Vet. Therefore, DO NOT USE HER. read more

We came to Briarcrest from a recommendation from our neighbor after leaving another clinic. We have 3 dogs currently and had loved our previous vet clinic until the owners sold the practice. It was hard to switch but I knew we needed to, after losing confidence in the previous clinic. We became patients of Dr Collins and she has helped us navigate through some tough issues, such as an enlarged liver, liver nodules, extreme allergies and now our one dog has been diagnosed with lymphoma. We have lived in Tucson all of our lives. We found some good veterinarians on the northwest side of town but when we moved to the Far East side of town, we had so many bad experience with vets. One office missed an infection that required surgery, then would not give us muscle relaxers when the same dog (who was recovering after having been hit by a truck and had massive injuries) and told me I should stand by and video her while she writhed and screamed in pain from the spasms. The other office was nice but they were hell bent on removing our dog's leg at the hip, even though she was recovering and walking on it. I told all of this to a friend who recommended Briarcrest. We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Maki. Amputation seemed to never even occur to Dr. Maki an the Briarcrest staff. They gave us the medications we needed to keep our precious girl comfortable and recommended the very best rehab for her. Dr. Maki also treated our other husky for a skin disorder on her nose that no other vet would help us with unless we spent $1700 on a biopsy. Today, our baby dog that was hit by a truck had an injury to the previously injured foot that required amputation of toes, debridement, and flap closure. The end result was a beautiful closure. Dr. Maki and the Briarcrest staff were there for us without hesitation in a time of crisis. Check the date of this post. It's Christmas Eve. To sum up the point of this post, you will not find a better small animal veterinary office in this city, and I'd venture to say within a 100 mile radius. read more

Our dog had what seemed to be a simple eye problem but had my wife very concerned. We took her in to get her checked out. Dr. Maki gave us several initial diagnoses, one of which was very ominous. They would need to run tests which would take a few days to get results. The next day Dr. Maki called to check how it was going with the eye drops she prescribed and asked how the dog was doing. This was much unexpected and went above and beyond what she had to do. The results came two days later and the news was devastating. Our poor pooch had weeks at most. As she began to deteriorate follow-up visits were necessary to check her progress and make sure the eye problem didn't claim her vision. During this process Dr. Maki seemed genuinely concerned for our dog as a doctor and as a person. Her "bedside manner" was outstanding, treating our dog as though she truly cared about her. It soon became painfully obvious it was time to end our pet's suffering. My wife, daughters and I tearfully gathered to say goodbye. Dr. Maki gently explained how it would all work, what the dog would be going through and what we should expect. She treated our family as well as she treated our family pet. As soon as we get over this and consider getting a new puppy all his/her veterinary care will be handled by Briarcrest because Dr. Maki and staff really do seem to care about pets... and people. R. So I get this sincere response of I'm sorry but unfortunately we are not accepting new patients at this time because we are booked solid with our existing and regular patients that we are not taking new patients. I've heard that once in my lifetime and it was a doctors office telling me because I wasn't insured at that time when I owned my own business. I'm okay and I totally understand why they are refusing new clients but hearing the phone hang up on me after I said I understand I'll find something or go to California don't bother with maybe suggesting another Veterinary in Tucson because they should know who is or isn't accepting new patients when it's your competition and if your refusing to take new customers because your overwhelmed with the existing customers demands then it should not be an issue in fact it's should be what you do it's just considered being professional and shows respect towards other veterinarian businesses in Tucson. Good business practice all around I may come back one day but now I'm complaining on Yelp. Oh and grooming wow I used to do that for my pets but the nails I can't and the ears I wouldn't and the excuse my rudeness but the Anal glands expression I refuse to do and my dog wouldn't like me too either. We recently adopted a very sassy cat and took her to Briarcrest for her adoption examination. The facility is modern, well-designed, quite large, and very pleasant. The staff are also very friendly and helpful, both at the front desk and in the examination room. Our cat, from what we could tell, felt rather comfortable also. The vet that joined us in the examination room was friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. This examination was short and straight-forward, but we had no issues, concerns, or problems during our visit. Dr. Collins' approach to ordering tests and ruling things out was explained very well, and our dog improved quickly. If you're looking for an honest Vet, with no high pressure guilt and scare tactics, this is the place. The office is very nice and modern, and the unique L shaped waiting room makes it easy to keep your pooch away from other patients while waiting. The front office staff are also very friendly. Two years ago I adopted an ex-greyhound racer. She had lost one of her back legs due to a severe accident at the track here in Tucson. My greyhound was taken care of by Briarcrest for her leg injury. I continued to use Briarcrest and the same doctor that had done my dog's surgery, since I felt that they were fully aware of her health needs. I have had dogs and cats practically all of my adult life and I feel that Briarcrest provides the very best veterinary care that I have experienced. The office staff is nice but they really aren't on top of their game at calling in prescriptions to pick up elsewhere. I love Dr. Mackie she is the reason I go back. NEVER get a prescription filled there if you can get it somewhere else. They charge a flat $15.00 rate to fill the order if it is 1 pill or 100. They also over charge dramatically. Examples: I got an antibotic there for 30 pills it was $40.00 but the next time I had it called into walmart and it was $8.00. My dog had cancer. The medicine was going to be $150.00 there but at costco it was $54.00 for the month. I could give more... love the place but they rip you off for drugs. read more

Great care, kindness, and understanding about financial concerns. I noticed an oozing crater on the rump of our sons cat this morning. We did not have a relationship with a vet so checked yelp and saw good reviews. Barbara fit us in within the hour and Dr. Maki cared for our cat. She gave us a detailed estimate of costs before doing anything and came up with ways to save some money (giving meds at home vs injections in the office.) in addition, she was willing to try a more conservative treatment approach and to save other, more costly, treatments in the event this was not successful. - although from her exam findings she thought this would be sufficient. The exam was thorough and Dr. Maki explained what was going on. The technician reviewed how to administer the meds before we left. All in all, we were very impressed with the practice and set up an appointment for the routine care of our dog.
