Chico (my senior chihuahua's) troubles at Benarda Veterinary Hospital began in November of '21 with what I thought was going to be a prescription renewal for dental antibiotics, and to check on a chronic cough. He had badly decayed teeth and a heart murmur-- so surgery had always been discouraged. Dr. Daroowalla however, declared with certainty by phone that Chico was not as old as thought, and was in good health. She continued (by phone) that he had a good chance to flourish for at least a couple more years after a full set of tooth extractions. She said his cough would go away with the extractions, too. I was shocked but elated-- and then made it clear that I am indigent poor. The staff was supportive, and the office manager said they have a great payment program to help people like me. It was an emotionally charged decision. Even though I knew I should insist on continuing with antibiotics for the rest of his natural life, I wanted dearly to give Chico a stab at healthy longevity and I trusted Dr. D's assessment, as I had known her for many years. I caved and said yes, with high hopes. It would be the worst "yes" I ever said. Post-surgery was rough, and he spent his 1st night lying in his urine in the unheated laundry room because he was disoriented. But always the trooper, he pulled through and we enjoyed our last Xmas together. In a few weeks he started coughing again, and panting heavily. Back to Benarda we went. Up, up, climbed the vet bills. He coughed and panted as his lungs filled with fluid. When I knew he was dying, I called Benarda again. "Chico's really miserable and I'm broke. Can you please put him down for me?" No, we're not a blank check, said the staff person. "Oh. Well he can die at home." No! they said, get him to a vet ASAP! They gave me a list to call. They all charged at least $100 except for PACC, and that wasn't an option. So Chico died in my arms. He was comfortable as he was able, he was in his home, and he was with his Mom. Feb. 10, he died of congestive heart failure. He passed peacefully, and I buried him in my yard under my pomegranate tree. Tears were beyond my control for weeks. A couple of weeks later, not a word from Benarda and I had questions. I asked to meet with both Dr. D. and Aynsley, the office manager, to talk about what happened with my deceased dog, her choice of treatment and the bills that incurred. Only Anysley was available - the Dr. remained frustratingly out of sight. Aynsley was polite but defensive, and made a reference to crap shoots. I guess it's the lack of conscience at Benarda that lingers every month as that $63 payment saps my small Social Security check (my only source of income). As a former business owner myself, I ponder how someone like Dr. Daroowalla especially, did not reach out to me. An acknowledgement, a condolence, even a goodwill financial gesture, anything-- to help heal my grief around the circumstances of my beloved dog's demise would have been so appreciated... I will be paying for Chico's death until February 2025. I am wiser now about standing by my intuition. Intuition is what people of limited means depend on in lieu of financial backup. Sadly, we who need the love of 4-legged companionship the most are often those who can least afford them. read more

My various animals have been patients at Benarda Animal Hospital for over 20 years. This is a compassionate animal-centered practice. No exams on hard steel tables. Everyone gets on the floor in the exam room and sits on padded mats. This is for the comfort of your animal. All the technicians, staff and vets at Bernard are fantastic. I tried to schedule an appointment for a stray that is the sweetest dog. He isn't eating much, even though there's always food near him. He gets along with all dogs and people and didn't deserve to be homeless and hungry. I tried taking him to the vet for a checkup and to get his shots and a microchip. They turned me away because I was a new customer. Their excuse was that they only have two doctors and were overwhelmed. I don't care about excuses. If you are a service business, you are there to provide a service. Figure it out or close down your business and allow someone else to figure it out. Hire more vets. If you are "overwhelmed", that means there's money to be made. You are basically scoffing at that money because you can't figure out how to provide the service you are there to provide. I'm a highly anxious dog mom, I am quick to move vets if I think the vet doesn't have my dogs' best interests at heart. Dr. D was recommended to me and I liked her but wasn't 100% sold on her being my vet. I saw Dr. Maillard and I really liked her calm, patient energy and willingness to listen to my concerns. What initial brought me to her was my dog's incontinence and two other vets, three other veterinarians all wanted to run a urinary analysis and came up empty. I did research on my own, I came up with a diagnosis and I did not tell her what I thought it was but she came to the same conclusion I did. Her willingness to look beyond a urinary test, and really get to the heart of the matter showed me how much she cared and what a great vet she is. Recently I had to put my dog down, and despite being overworked, understaffed, they squeezed me in. Beth, and all the staff were so caring and warm. Dr. Maillard did not rush me, did not make me feel like I was eating up her time even though I knew I was. I feel very fortunate to have found this veterinary office. For those complaining about not getting in and having trouble with them getting back to you, please keep in mind when COVID happened the influx of dog owners to the number of certified vets has created a huge disadvantage and overwhelming crisis among vets. 4.5 Due to not being open on the weekends. Benarda has provided quality care for our two cats and two dogs. The staff is friendly and the facilities are modern and clean. In terms of care, I really appreciate how they have yet to recommend procedures that seem extreme or extremely expensive, which is a rare find in my opinion. They also havre provided with lists of treatments for medications that can be purchased over the counter to let us comparison shop. At the end of each visit they review a follow up plan with written instructions. They are also happy to fill pet medications in house. This is the first time I have had to do this, but I am going to give your clinic a "BAD REVIEW" If there were a negative star, This clinic earned it. On 11/5/19, I brought Autumn into your clinic.  The veterinarian suggest a Senior Wellness blood test be done, saying the results would be back the following Thursday 11/7.  I called on 11/7, but they said the results were not back yet. I called the next day and was told the veterinarian would call me before the end of the day. I got no call. On Monday, the dog stopped eating and was quickly declining. I phoned Bernarda, again and was told the veterinarian was not in that day. I phoned on Tuesday morning 11/12 and was told they would look into it and get back to me shortly.  NO return call, so I phoned at 4:45pm.  I was told that either the test was not back yet or the veterinarian had not gotten a chance to look at it.  I will not be back to your clinic, nor will I recommend it to anyone else. read more

The staff here has been extremely helpful in caring for my dog with an extreme case of valley fever. They would call for updates and were very thorough in managing her pain. What a fantastic team. They treated my baby girl like their own, she's a 55lb mixed lab/shepherd going on 16yo. Even though I couldn't go in with her (due to Covid-19) -when I picked her up, she had no signs of stress at all, even after big time nail clipping and blood draws!! She NEVER has needed vet care beyond vaccinations, she was very comfortable without me, and that speaks volumes. HIGHLY recommend this vet. read more

All of the staff had always treated my deceased fur baby Charlie well. I came there in 2020 twice in regards to a cough Charlie had developed. I was told it was probably allergies, and to give him clarifion. The first doctor was more concerned with me getting his teeth cleaned for a ridiculous price. I took Charlie to another vet who had reasonable prices 1 week later. They found a loose tooth that was barely holding on. Menards checked his mouth but missed it. I called back to Bernarda for a 2nd exam regarding the same cough. Again they said allergies and checked moles on his body. But they are common with boxers. They wanted me to come back in a couple of months. I decided tho to the other vet to get a less expensive exam instead. They found that the cough was from a condition Boxers get Cardio Myopathy. He had been coughing for a year. A All the money I spent at Benarda could have gone to meds and caring for Charlie all that time. I took meticulous care of my baby. For a year the blew off his cough.He was a Boxer Shepard mix. They never once told me it even could be Myopathy. By the time we started treating him at the other vet it was to late. The new vet and I did everything humanly possible. His medicine was very expensive monthly. But he was my strong beautiful baby I was willing to do everything possible to keep him alive. But it took him fast! He passed Nov. 9th. We were inseparable. My heart is broke.I will never forgive the doctors at Benarda. How could they not know he had the symptoms of Cardio Myopathy when it is prevalent in Boxers, Dobermans. I rescued Charlie. I never had a Boxer before. read more

Bernarda is not what it used to be. Very unorganized staff from the top down. I.e. takes forever to get results, almost impossible to get a call returned, prescription copies, etc. All which result in distress especially when one's pet is in crisis. First and foremost, the doctors are wonderful. (Perhaps a bit overworked and perhaps a bit underpaid but wonderful nevertheless.) I was trying to track down an alternative to tradition animal medical care and was happy to learn about Benarda's existence in Tucson. Their laid back, no stainless steal terror-inducing tables approach is SO refreshing. The exams take place on the floor which is incredibly animal friendly. The artwork on the walls is lovely. You don't get the sense that you're another number helping to buy them a second flat screen TV for the lobby. HOWEVER, the rest of the staff is a major #%$&ing crapshoot. Once you get past the incredibly unpleasant woman at the front desk, cross your fingers and take your chances because you might get the little one with the monumental chip on her shoulder or you might get the sweet, soft spoken one or you might get the pushy know-it-all or you might get the chipper friendly one or the gentle helpful one or you might get the one who seems offended by your very presence. (I really can't stress the crapshoot effect enough here.) BUT, at this point, to me, it's completely worth dealing with the occasional horrendous personality because I feel like my guys are receiving really great medical support from a veterinarian who actually listens to your concerns and does their best to make you and your animals feel comfortable. read more

Very poor service. I show up early to my 930am appointment and at 1010am after waiting 40 minutes past the appointment time, still no doctor. Neither did a vet tech come and explain why - and there was no emergency happening, when I walked out there were two staff at the front desk just gossiping and goofing off. Starting off I wish I could give 100+ stars they are fantastic people all around. They saved my dogs life twice. They help our beautiful baby Halo while she was giving birth to 6 puppies and as well she just came down with Parvovirus and they were able to immediately give us the treatment on the spot. They are unbelievable generous and by far the veterinarians in town. Other vets/emergency vets told us "oh well good luck with that" or expected us to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket. I've been going to Bernarda Vet for the past 4 years. Since they moved to their nice new clinic I've had nothing but issues with their staff. Not taking notes, not returning calls and messing up billing. I understand dosages can get confusing and there may be 4 different places each person writes down a note but it impacts what the Dr thinks my pet has been taking for months when reading blood work. The only reason I still go here is because of Dr Vanclief, she has made life saving decisions for my pet. But your staff either has a severe lack of attention to detail or a poor note taking system in place. I believe it is the latter but needs to be addressed either way. read more

Whenever I have to experience a different veterinary practice, I am reminded of how much I ADORE taking my pets (two dogs, two cats) to Bernarda to visit Dr. Daroowalla or Dr. Butkiewicz. They are kind, knowledgeable, and care about my furry family members. When I got my first dog in Tucson, I recalled that a few people I knew had absolutely gushed about their vets. When I asked each of them who their vet was, it turned they all took their animals to Dr. D at Bernarda, so it was a no-brainer. Though my cats will never be happy having to leave the house, the dogs LOVE visiting the vet. The exam rooms are like your friend's living room (ok, without windows) with a big futon on the floor where exams take place. The walls are all decorated in amazing, colorful pet portraits done by Mary Theresa Dietz. My dogs really believe they are visiting friends and are ad excited going to the vet as they are when going to the park. They've always been able to accommodate me when an acute issue has come up, once even sticking around after hours to xray my dog who had chewed up a can (the empty can!) of cat food. They are mindful of cost concerns, and can advise about necessary v optional tests, etc. but will not skimp on your animal's care just to save a few bucks, either. I have certainly never felt as though they are trying to get me to spend more money just to float their business. I love Bernarda! read more

I have been to several vets in Tucson and found Benarda Vet Clinic because I wanted a homeopathic vet for my senior cat. Dr. D. practices both regular and alternative medicine. The staff is always friendly and it is obvious that everyone there truly likes animals. It is a more cozy environment for your pet. They get to be examined on mats on the floor instead of a steel table. I've never been to a clinic that has anything like that and while it wouldn't be my reason to pick a place, it is a very nice added feature. read more

Unfortunately the last three years have been very different since I started to to her with all my pets over 20 plus years ago. I have actually paided twice just to see her after her team recommended I see the other doctor and I was left in the room for more than 20 mins with no one know When or what. I was given my pup that time and told to leave even though the doctor never came back to the room. I had come there to pick up medication twice and arrived prior and no one knew where it went. Calling I called a mo and a half ago three weeks ago three dat ago and again today . All being put on hold given the wrong information and finally getting the manager who did what should of been done ages ago. Very sad she a really good vet. I have no idea if she even knows what's really going on since she dose operations most the time now. Interesting that they had me see there other vet even thought I told them that what would be needed. I am being sarcastic since this is funny that they never amid there errors .just say they will correct. They always say they will correct but takes a hammer and time my time to deal with them. Very sad great vet .. and you surly can't take to her actually mad apt they recommended after all the problem and even got charge for that even though I had just been there and trying to get a response. Was nice to see her she is still the persons of choice I have had for all my pet for so very many years. She saw them come and go .. very concerned since these are are pet.. it's as if your hearing a script except taking with her.she has always has incredible integrity. I went in on Monday with my dog who was lethargic, throwing up, diarrhea. Waited almost an hour and a half before seeing the vet. Who talked down to me and acted like it was just me changing my dogs diet that was to cause. She wouldn't even do an exam because she practices "no fear" and my little puppy growled once which the vet said she was not comfortable with. Didn't exam my dog at all! Tried to charge me a full fee. I was there over 3 hours in all and was told to give my dog an anti-anxiety med before coming back. Fast forward to today... sitting in urgent care while my dog is throwing up blood none stop. Over $800 in ER fees because Bernarda would not even look at my dog, let alone offer some anti nausea meds or something to help. I wanted the holistic route but not if that means they put my dogs life in danger like they did. It's a shame because I really liked them until they hired the new vet. read more

This isn't just the best Vet in Tucson, this is the best vet I have ever had - PERIOD. You can always tell a lot about people and their business by the way they treat their customers in times of high stress and emotion. I walked in to this clinic last week with a very sick dog after making a last minute appointment a couple of hours before. The doctor was scheduled to leave at 1pm but decided to stay late to see Sasha, my chocolate lab, who was vomiting and lethargic. From the minute I got there, the staff was understanding and gentle with my dog, getting her vitals and weight without the usual fanfare other clinics make. Then came the rough stuff. My dog was diagnosed with cancer (she had an open tumor on her belly) and she was having serious problems with her pancreas and digestive tract. I was completely in shock, having lost another long term pet last summer and not wanting to have to make the decision to have her euthanized without my kids getting to say goodbye. The Dr. and her staff walked me through all of the options and gave me every feasible outcome given the circumstances, without getting into how much money I had to pay or how much it was going to cost. Once we did get to the money, which is inevitable in these cases, she handled the conversation with the kind of sensitivity you would expect in these situations (nobody goes into a vet planning paying thousands of dollars for emergency treatment). I did end up having to make the hard decision to have my dog put to sleep but I was confident it was the right decision and I didn't feel pressured into making it. Very helpful, all about the animals. When I called in a panic last year, five minutes to closing, because my cat had unexpectedly died, they stayed open late so I could bring her in, then were patient with me over the next several days while I tried to figure out the best course of action for her and my other pets. Wonderful bedside manner with the animals, and (depending on the person) reasonable to very good bedside manner with the people. Exams take place on the floor, unless your cat wants to jump on tables (which they provide for that express purpose), in which case the exam takes place in the location of the cat. Understanding about practicalities such as price, and willing to work with you through payment plans or even offering cheaper remedies. Highly recommend. read more

Dr. Daroowalla should teach a course on doctor-patient etiquette, and I guess I lucked out on the staff because everyone I encountered was all smiles (especially the older lady who took down the initial information). I love their rooms--spacious, with a bunch of chairs, paintings, a jar of biscuits and a cushioned mat for your pet to be examined. Their holistic approach is great, and I SO appreciate the fact that Dr. Daroowalla brought to my attention how long the rabies vaccine actually lasts in dogs (for the older ones who've gotten the initial ones and subsequent boosters, basically a lifetime). I didn't feel rushed either, and her demeanor really encourages you to ask questions. Their pricing is very reasonable, especially if you nabbed that Pet Assure deal from Living Social (their 25% discount is accepted at Bernarda). read more

We have been taking our cats and now our dogs to Dr. D for over 10 years. Each exam room is designed to make the animals feel comfortable and they right off the bat know it's not a typical clinical sterile setting. Dr. D is an amazing vet because she cares so deeply for the animals she treats and is not afraid to bring in other resources/opinions when need be. We have had some animals with very special needs and Dr. D and her staff make sure they are given the best care possible. read more

Switched over to Benarda Vet Clinic and Dr D a couple of years ago on recommendation of a family member who took her dogs there. She was able to remove the large tail tumor when my regular vet of 20+ years seemed perplexed by it. The manner in which all animals and people are treated here keeps me happily coming back, pads on the floor for exams instead of scary, slippery tables; happy, efficient staff to support all the efforts; comfortable waiting room and even a sign on the desk, that can be activated when needed alerting folks to someone dealing with having to put a beloved pet down and to be respectful of their space. This is the level of caring concern extended every time to everyone walking in the door, regardless of how many legs they have! LOVE this place! read more

They are patient, gentle, compassionate, and professional. OK I need to retract a review I posted a few days ago I was very upset over my sick & dying 13 year old cat that I had already spent $2,200 at Pima Pet Clinic for 24 hours.So when I went to pick her up at Bernarda on a Thursday after she was there for 9 days & they told me the charges were 4,178 I was outraged that I wasn't being made aware of this especially since I initially told them I could not afford to keep my cat alive at a high cost after I had spent. a large sum of money already.Dr Daroowalla is a GREAT vet & she is trying to adjust some of the charges & apparently she was not aware of the fact they were not telling me on a daily basis what kind of charges there was.I took my cat back there & I will continue to go there with my other pets & I am definitely getting pet insurance so I don't have to learn the hard way just how expensive a pets health care can be. read more

What a pathetic place! Terrible customer service. I took my dog there and they put me in a room where we waited 45 minutes for the vet. I got up and left after 45 minutes and when they finally realized I wasn't there (after 1 hour), they called and told me that the vet didn't even know I was waiting. I could have waited in that room all day and never seen the vet. When I got up to leave, the girl at the front desk didn't ask me why I was leaving, didn't seem to care. I have two dogs-they will be going to a different vet from now on. read more
