More than three hours for a state inspection! I've been going to Express Auto for the last several years but no more. I arrived this morning (Saturday) at 7:50am and was advised that the wait would be about 1.5 hours. This is at the edge of my tolerance already but I agreed as I was already there and handed over my keys. After I inquired around 10:00 (already 2 hours into my 1.5 hour wait) as to when I was going to be seen, I was advised I was next. My car was eventually pulled into their inspection bay about 10:30. I had been waiting outside getting some reading done as the television in the lobby was obnoxiously loud. When I saw my car moving, went into the lobby where I could see my car in the bay. After their technician made a cursory examination of the vehicle, I watched him strolling around, talking and laughing with the other mechanics and standing outside the back bay door. He seemed very jovial in his attitude, happy even, but he certainly had no sense of urgency to get anything done, nevermind common courtesy to customers. I had lots of time to read many of their awards covering the wall in the office, "Best of the Burg 2018" one of them said. There is a large trophy like thing under glass in the lobby touting their excellent customer service. I couldn't help but look at those awards and back out at thier mechanic wasting MY time on a Saturday morning entertaining himself while not attending to my vehicle and his job. I wonder who nominates business for such awards? Express Auto, if you are going to allow your employees to behave that way then kindly put up some blinds or something so I can't watch him not work on my car as I stand in your lobby watching the hours tick away on my Saturday. An eternity later, the young lady emerges with the little red folder in her hand and informs me that the car will not pass inspection because the license plate light was out. I asked if they had a light and could they just replace it? She informed me that they did have the light but that it would cost $60 to replace. No thank you. You should seriously consider hiring some mechanics to work in your shop. I don't need to pay an attorney to replace a light bulb in my car. Don't worry though, I was then informed that I could bring my car back after fixing the light myself and the re-inspect will only cost $1. No thanks Express, I will take my car elsewhere and pay the full inspection fee there. Express auto will never see another nickel of my money nor anyone else's over whom I have any influence. As a side not, as I was waiting to be billed for this travesty they pass off as service, I heard the guy in front of me talking with the lady at the payment counter. He didn't think twice about paying north of $100 for an oil change and air filter. I do most of my own maintenance so I know that you can get oil and oil filter for around $20 and an air filter for around $10 at any parts store or Wal Mart. That comes to about $70 in labor and taxes for a $100 bill. If you think those things are reasonable then head on down to the ironically named Express Auto. Otherwise save yourself time and money and find some other place to maintain your vehicle, maybe "Second Best in the Burg". read more

I walked into service center to ask the Technician about my Tire condition and tread wear depth after I waited several minutes for the Technician to finish his phone conversation, He explained that he would not be able to check my Tire or look at the condition of the tread wear. My husband and I bring our cars here anytime they need regular maintenance. Oil changes, tire rotations, etc. We trust the team here- from the mechanics getting their hands dirty to the administrative professionals that handle the paperwork. Everyone is always professional and kind, which let's face it, is hard to come by these days! We've never had to bring our cars back here because a job was performed poorly. The waiting room is comfortable for those long waits when you decide to stick around for service to be complete. There are refreshments, wifi, TV and a restroom. This business is community-aware and often participates in fundraising events for the local animal shelters. This business has beautiful landscaping as well, which I enjoy :] read more

Is there anything lower than one star to give??? My husband waited from 750 to 1030 to have the van inspected. It failed for light on licenses plate. Wanted to charge 60 DOLLARS to replace!!! State inspections, oil change and minor repairs and or car wash are all acceptable. The service is good , but man any major car repairs are through the roof. Honda Civic 2008 air compressor, flush and filter $1500. Not to mention they charged me $110 for the diagnostics. Ouch! I had a roller lifter go bad, and after a while it damaged the cam shaft. At the time I had no idea what the problem was. After these guys had my truck for almost 2 weeks I got a $300.00 oil change and the suggestion that I leave it longer so they could check a few other things. I gave up and took my truck back to the dealer ship where I purchased it before I got home they called and told me what was wrong and the price to fix it. Went in to replace a faulty starter and get an oil change. They replaced the starter without a problem, but afterwards they tried to convince me that I had a crack in my timing belt and it needed to be replaced. My car uses a timing chain. When I left later that day my car began to leak oil, and I took it to a different mechanic who informed me that the oil cap had not been screwed back all the way. Very untrustworthy place. Went to get a state inspection about 10 am and was finished just before 10:30. The old sticker was removed completely and the new one affixed centered and level. The seats were not adjusted nor the radio on some other station. I will go back for my next inspection or oil change. read more

I have been taking my vehicles here for years but last week they failed my inspection noting I needed to replace my front rotors. (Only $375.00) I did not believe the rotors were that bad so I took my vehicle to Merrymans and they passed it. They said my rotors were fine. I was very pleased with how quickly my car was moved into the service bay for the work to start, literally a couple of minutes after arriving the work started. The oil change was done in just under 30 minutes from when I arrived. Everything was great until the checkout process. It took the clerk Rita M 28 minutes from receiving my paperwork and one other customers paperwork to process the payments. Now it did not take Rita M that long to process the payments, she was rather quick once she started. The issue was that she was engaged in a personal conversation for over 20 minutes that took priority. Now as thrilled as I was to overhear about her previous job as a engineering inspector and their sit down dinners in Vienna I would have preferred to have been on my way. I guess my only suggestion when it comes to their customer service is to talk to Rita M about her personal conversations when there are customers waiting. It should not take longer to checkout than it does for the work to be done. read more

Poor service. Called on the phone in regards to "Emissions inspection ". Spoke with a female, and was told to bring my car in for inspection. Called back to verify that this inspection could be done. When I arrived was told by the same young female that, the inspection could not be done. I said to her, now I spoke with you 2 different times in regards to this inspection and you assured me that, if I was here an hour before closing at the least my inspection would be done. She gave me the infamous "I'm sorry ". This was on Friday, my inspection was expiring that day. Got on the phone and spoke with a shop 10 miles up the road, explained my situation, the mechanic stayed until I arrived, did my inspection and I was on my way. I was totally left hanging by this shop, would not recommend they lied on the phone and in person. This place is untrustworthy and will charge you for unnecessary repairs, especially if you use them for a simple inspection. They found some random issue with my car that failed inspection, and then offered to fix it for hundreds of dollars. They even said they wouldn't recommend I drive the car off their lot because it was unsafe... I immediately took their estimate to my car dealership where my car passed inspection with no problem. Just took my car to get inspected. I am new in the area. I just had my rear brakes done at another local shop 4 months ago and they told me the front brakes were fine. They gave me a rejection and said I needed new brakes and rotors. I asked the man working at the front desk, how many inspections need repairs, he said almost all of them. THAT says so much. Wasted 2 hours of my time and money to get a rejection sticker just to take it back to the shop that did the brake work. I saw another woman has the same issue on here. Disappointed. read more

I made an appointment for 7:30 and was here early. I pulled up to the side as always, to be told they moved the customer service door to the other side. I drove around to find no where to park so after circling the lot, I ended up close to where I had been on the other side. I walked all the way back to the customer service door, now approaching 7:30. But, the door was locked and no one bothered to come open it, a...lthough they saw me standing there. Finally a mechanic came to the door and told me to go back to the side I was on already and wait. So I walked all the way back around the building and drove my truck to the door. Now I am 6th, and not first. It is 25 minutes after my appointment (35 minutes after my arrival) and getting to work on time is going to be a challenge. Grr...This is in the quiet waiting room. I can't speak for other's experiences, but I will speak for mine. I have an '06 Tacoma with 150,000 miles and one night on my way home there was a large vibrating noise followed by loss of power. I got out, looked under the vehicle, and noticed the drive shaft was split in two. It was dark, so I couldn't see all of the damage, but took a photo anyways. I rolled to a stop and called USAA who connected me with a local tow company and recommended a different garage to have it sent to. The tow truck driver called, and as it was 9:15 at night, he said the place was locked up and couldn't drop it off there in good faith...but he knew a good shop that he recommends...Express Auto. After reading the reviews the following morning, this sent up a red flag, as this has happened to other USAA members. The following day, a Sunday, the owner called me in response to my voice mail and asked details regarding my truck. I listened and amicably so, he said they would take a look at it and give me a call. He was more than nice on the phone, but never once said there was a $50.00 charge. The following day I received a quote (make sure you get it in writing via fax - it will be very general and won't spell out the hidden costs) for a drive shaft replacement, 3 U-joints, and labor totaling ~ $2,300.00. Knowing that dealerships are traditionally high for repairs, but are at least guaranteed, I asked for a quote from Toyota...(.5 miles away). Quote for the same repair was $1320.00-confirmation that Express was attempting to screw me. The quote from Express was $165.00 higher for the drive shaft ($1365.00 with the dealership .5 miles away -so shipping shouldn't cost that), 3 U-joints at approximately $400.00, and $450.00 for labor (for 1.5 hrs labor which I had several mechanics quote the job as taking that long). The funny thing is that when ordering the drive shaft from Toyota, the U-joints are part of the $1200.00 cost. To make a long story short, I found a great local mechanic who picked the truck up from Express, towed it to his garage, replaced all 3 U-joints (cause of the actual problem), balanced the drive shaft, and dropped it off at my house for under $600.00! What really upsets me is that when I went to Express, I saw the waiting rooms filled with the elderly, and while I know they aren't all technologically non-savvy, I feel that Express takes advantage of those who are unable to research for better deals. Furthermore, they are taking advantage of people under the guise that their qualifications speak for themselves. The car wash, oil change, and spa service may all be great, but I caution you all to do some research before you have them do any major repairs to your vehicle. This tells me that many of those reviews on Google and other sites were either from superior service long ago, or planted there by friends/family of those that work there. read more

If you like to take your car in for an oil change, and the "experts" come back to you, with a laundry lists of things they "strongly recommend" be repaired at exuberant prices, then, this is the place for you! I've been a client of theirs for years, and little by little, the feeling of being taken advantage of has grown over the years. I have always given them the benefit of the doubt because they do good work, but their "laundry lists" and prices have become ridiculous. For instance, last week my daughter's Passat had an issue with a coolant leak, and Express Auto quoted $648 to repair it, plus $54 just to do the diagnostic(!). We opted on paying the darn diagnostic fee and taking the car to another shop we recently started to use, which quoted $294, without charging anything for the "diagnostic" - a savings of $408! Express Auto... REALLY? Word of caution - don't let this place rape you! read more

I am very happy I found EAS. I was trying to get a state inspection at the end of last month and the dealerships across the street both told me 2+ hour wait! Ugh! Who wants to sit in a dealership that long, really?! I found EAS across the street and was in and out in 30 ish mins. I was impressed with their honesty when I heard them speaking with other patrons, especially women. My son is a mechanic in Richmond and I know all about the classic "upselling" crap. They did not even try it. AND when I checked in here I got $5 off any service. I just had the "tire pressure" light come on and stopped by, they quickly checked my pressure and added air where needed. No charge! I trusted these folks with my car repairs years ago, but that's not been the case over the past several years and definitely NEVER again after my most recent experience. The past several years I've popped in for the random oil change with a coupon or state inspection, but always ended up with a list of recommendations for costly repairs/services at each visit. Last week I scheduled an appointment for a free brake and suspension check. I had a coupon for it. My car had recently begun to have steering wheel vibration with braking. I am quite familiar with this feeling as it usually means that I need my front rotors turned or replaced. I did NOT mention this to them as I wanted them to diagnose the problem without me giving them ideas of ways to present me with a costly repair estimate.. At this appointment I was called out to the garage where I was told that my car needed rear rotors and rear brake pads replaced. I was told the brake pads were worn, not much pad left to them and the rotors could not be turned. It was also mentioned that my transmission fluid was brown, so they recommended a new filter and replacement of fluid. Funny, I went in for a brake and suspension check, neither of which have to do with my transmission. The whopping estimate for all of that...$771.07! Doubting their findings, two days later I took my car to Merchant's Tire and Auto for a complimentary brake check. They said all of my brake pads had plenty of life left and my front rotors were warped and needed replacing. Estimate for front rotor replacement $409. Wanting to make sure the rear rotors were not a problem, I took my car for a third and final inspection. Little Tire Company took my car for a spin before and felt the vibration. An inspection found that all brake pads were fine, but front rotors were warped and could not be turned. I got them to replace the front rotors and had them put on new front brake pads for $365. I may be a female, but I refuse to be ripped off. I wonder how many customers would have bitten the bullet, agreeing to the costly repairs, trusting their findings. read more

If I could give negative stars, like -10, that is how I would rate Express Auto. I regret taking my car to Express Auto Service. I took it there for an oil change. The service employee Roger told me I had an oil leak. I knew my car had a small oil leak and would eventually need to have it fixed. Because they could fix it then, I elected to have the work. The next day I started on a 300 mile road trip. 4 hours into the trip, my engine blew and could not be repaired. The car was towed to a garage where a mechanic looked at it and could not understand why the engine blew and why I had water in my engine and in the oil. This mechanic also said I should have had 100K miles left on my car. Never again. Express Auto Service cost me my car and created a lot of trouble for me. read more
