I love this Church. I'm so grateful to have found this place. Holy Spirit is always so present and moving so greatly. The spirit of God is not just in this place, but in this Church body. I have experienced so many breakthroughs, not just for myself but when I have witnessed others experience God. Expression 58 is the epitome of what it means to be the feet of Jesus. Other amazing things about this Church that I haven't really experienced with others is strong Mentorship through the Five Fold Ministry, resources to grow in God, discipleship + intercession in their life groups, how devoted they are in giving to other communities internationally, and the amount of diversity in praise/worship team. This church is the real deal. They don't pull any punches when preaching the Bible and they call for you to go deeper in your faith and your relationship with Jesus. Walking into worship - it's clearly Holy Spirit filled. The kids program is phenomenal. I have 4 children and they all love going into Sunday school. And Sunday school is also teaching the kids to go deeper. There is no junior Holy Spirit. The children are being challenged to learn to listen and act on what God is speaking to them. We absolutely love E 58 and are so thankful For that churches like this exist in LA. I will say there are things that seem "inconvenient". For example there's no parking. But I challenge you- are we attending church bc it's convenient? Or are we hungry for God. If you're hungry for more of God- E 58 is the place for you! read more

This is where I found God. After being church hurt and distant from God for over 10 years, the Lord met me through miraculous ways and walked me right into the door here. As a creative, I felt welcome here as the congregation is heavily invested in the creative arts, worship, and social justice. Doing what God asked us to do, love others and go out and help the community, not just sit and listen stagnantly. It's a beautiful welcoming diverse accepting community. I used to think writing reviews for churches was so silly -- it seemed so weird to "rate" a faith community, especially when people's experiences with churches tend to be very personal and subjective. But I relent. The Lord has altered my life through Expression 58 and so I have to testify! I'm not even sure how to concisely do this, so this review will probably will end up being the length of an MLA-format essay. Sorry not sorry! Through this church (and by the grace of God) I have been able to foster a deeper connection with Jesus than I've ever had, I've found a village that has stood by my side through highs and lows, and I even met the man who is now my husband. Five years ago I moved to LA from the midwest, leaving a vibrant and faith-filled church community behind. I knew no one in the city, and the moment I moved I knew I needed to connect to a faith community -- both to stay rooted and also just... because I wanted friends. But upon arrival I was completely intimidated by the sheer number of options in LA, as well as the prevailing stereotype that churches in this city are vapid and have weird, worldly theology. While this may be true of some, this is the antithesis of E58. It was immediately obvious to me the moment I heard the first worship song that this is a people passionately running after the Lord's heart. I cannot say enough about the worship at this church. It is not just 3 simple back-to-back songs (which is what I was used to at previous churches). Worship is a living, breathing thing; it is a conversation with God, prophetic at times and often spontaneous. You are invited to worship any way you like -- you may stand still, sit, kneel, dance, raise your hands, shout, stay quiet. It is truly a community where I feel safe to worship in whatever way I need to, no performance. The lead pastor, Jen (can we get a WOOP WOOP for a community that champions women's voices!!!), is a fierce and intelligent woman that does not hold back on theology in her sermons. No pandering... you are gonna LEARN and actually be challenged on Sundays. This community walks the talk. They preach the Lord's heart for justice and follow through with numerous justice programs as well as by responding to the immediate justice needs in our community. They preach the importance of diversity, and can boast incredible diversity not just in the congregation but also on the staff and in leadership roles. This diversity extends to age too. While there are many young adults, this is a community for families as well and people at any stage of life. The community I found at Expression has truly been my village. When my husband (who I also met at E58!) and I were getting married on a budget, there were so many goods and services that we could not afford. SO many people from our E58 family stepped in to help and bless us when we needed it. This made our wedding both successful and unforgettable. Our community is strong and grounded, as well as amazing with accountability and advice. (***CAVEAT*** This did not happen overnight, and also required effort, as all great community does. I can't emphasize enough the importance of signing up for groups, volunteering, actively seeking out mentors, etc. The price of community is inconvenience!!!) Do not be mislead -- this church is made up of human beings and therefore is inherently imperfect. We of course deal with very human problems. But if you're looking for a perfect place filled with perfect holy people, I can guarantee that you will not find one. I am deeply grateful to be in a community that embraces difficulties and imperfections, and is constantly re-surrendering to the Lord's perfection. Caring and attentive kids program and great messages on Sundays. I like how they offer two service times for people's convenience in addition to online streams for folks that need it. Parking is tricky but if you are willing to walk a bit you'll find a spot eventually. 9 am service is usually less folks if you are into smaller crowds read more

He is the same person up close as he is in front of a crowd. I was super excited to visit this church after reading Shawn Boltz's book and learning he is in LA. I was 20 minutes early for church I found myself driving around looking for parking that caused me to almost be late. The website said that it was modest and casual wear. Far from modest. Most of the girls wearing tight or skinny jeans (as well as many of the guys) with spaghetti strap and very revealing tops. Far from modest. The worship team was wearing jeans with holes. No reverence for God. The guy on the team was wearing jeans soo tight that his junk was no mystery. I found it disgusting and very distracting. A little to casual for me. But then again, why should I be surprised? Living in different places across the country, California defiantly has a spirit of rebelliousness in the churches. This is a church with people limited in their knowledge of modesty. The church was pitch black dark. We are called to live in the light. The devil likes the dark. When I was leaving I saw donuts. My body is a temple for the Holy Spirit and I take care of it. Donuts have no nutritional value and contribute to obesity. If you aren't offering alcohol at church then why are you offering donuts? read more

Visited this church a few times some years back. The minister seemed to be like the leaders mentioned in Ezekiel 34-"ruling with cruelty, scattering the flock, not going out after...". N.T. says: ministers are not to lord over but to be examples of hospitality among other positive things. There were a number of loving and genuine young believers we met; however, modern leadership and methods really lack. Needless to say, our quest did not end there.... read more

I've known many people that have cycled through this church with bizarre experiences and now I have become one of them. Let me just say there are some genuine believers here but I have witnessed too many leave here scathed. For a while there's this high of good deeds and achieving things as a group until you see the carnage. Good things done in the wrong way are no longer good things. PROS - Great welcoming team - Generally the congregation is nice and filled with lovely people despite the high turn over rates - Lots of programs, events, classes, groups, teams, etc to join up to - Kids have a blast and there's so much for them to do CONS - Jesus and the gospel is a convenient side chick to what they call "justice." - Scripture is used as a backup to support their chosen topics - Open conversation is controlled with specific people favored; very clique oriented - Speakers are brought in; more motivational unless it's about justice - Causes are more important than how the church community is treated - (Some) Staff are overworked, underpaid, and under appreciated - Questions or challenges are welcomed in theory but met with passive aggressiveness and quiet shunning; lots of pettiness and talking down to people - Pulpit is very different than behind the scenes - When serious issues arise in the church the pastors are not available and the issue is delegated to lower staff only - It's claimed that all ethnicities, sexualities, political views, etc are welcome; but that's only true IF you take on specific justice issues done how they see fit. There doesn't seem to be an understanding that the sanctification in Christ causes us to walk justly in all things; thus changing the world around us and bringing real justice. Without Him, these efforts are pointless and the result is what you have here in this church: burnout, confusion on salvation and who Christ really is, and experience/feeling focused teachings and authoritative verbal abuse. read more

I have belonged to some extraordinary churches over the last 3 decades, but I've never found a place where every single person I meet is passionately in love with God and eager to hear his voice, seek his face, worship and serve him -- and their neighbors and the world around us -- with such creativity and excellence. Okay, so I went back again this past Sunday and decided I really like this church! It's really laid back and casual and the people are really, really friendly, caring and open! I really enjoyed the worship music and really got into the spirit during the time. Afterward, we also had communion which was a touching experience for me and then the moderator asked the congregation to pray for all the people of California because of the flu epidemic that had reportedly hit our state and a few others. The moderator asked if there was anyone in the congregation that was ill with the flu so we could all pray for them but excitingly enough, no one in the congregation was sick or had family members who were. That being the case, we continued to pray for all the people of California to prevent them from catching the flu and/or to be healed from it. We then prayed for anyone who had any other illness or sickness. One interesting thing is that a fellow sitting two seats to my right, named Jack, stood up after it was requested for people who need prayer for an illness or medical condition to stand up so we could pray for their healing. We, who were close to him, gathered around him and laid our hands on him and started praying for his healing. One of the guys from the church asked him specifically what he needed prayer for and Jack said he had wrist pain when he moved his hand. The gentleman then starting praying specifically for his wrist in conjunction with us. He then asked Jack after a few minutes to start moving his wrist and let us know how much better it was...i.e., was it 25%, 50%" better etc. Jack started moving his wrist and said it was 100% better because he didn't feel any pain! Hallelujah! God is good and faithful. It goes to show that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever just like the bible says and He continues to heal people just like He did in the past and will continue to do so to those who believe! After service, they actually happened to have a meeting that afternoon for anyone involved in the entertainment industry which I attended and found very beneficial and encouraging in terms of support and prayer. Since I also write music on the side, it was totally something that I needed and consider myself very blessed to have found this group. I will definitely be returning again going forward as I believe I've finally found the right place to worship and fellowship since I've been searching for a place like this over the last few months. This church is kind of a mix of pentecostal/baptist/prosperity/hipster with a touch of end-times ministry, if that makes sense. The band's outstanding. Some of the best of any church i've ever been to! Congregation is friendly. The vibe is young, but it's welcoming to all ages, which is refreshing. The congregation really gets into it so it makes the worship engaging. Preachers are passionate. Lots of outreach and stuff for kids and opportunities to hang out with "Life groups." Part of their focus is the entertainment industry (it's LA after all) and they focus on people struggling in that biz. They do support organizations/missionaries that feed the homeless, and to orphanages and anti-sex trafficking orgs. Think hipster SJW's with Jesus. Before you go: I would say the church's values and leaders are more conservative than they seem at first. They do an ok job of trying to bring up different viewpoints, but in the end it's a conservative church: pro-life/abstinence-only, seemingly gay friendly (so long as they come around to being straight via prayer), faith "healing," some end-times ministry once in a blue moon thrown in. Think of churches like Hillsong to some extent, or think IHOP or Bethel Church without the speaking in tongues thing or miraculous "feathers"/"gold." These things aren't bad, per say, if this is what you're looking for or grew up with, but if you want something else you might want to look elsewhere. read more

I am glad this place works for some people but I think it's a really awful place. This is what happens when you have a system that allows anything and everything to be allowed in church.. Jokes, entertainment, inappropriate gestures of erotic love toward a guy's wife while standing on the stage (in the name of being funny or whatever-give me a break!). For the record this wasn't their pastor but some dude who was wearing a hat and selling some app.. Totally inappropriate even if you are her husband. This is supposed to be the house of the Lord man not some Hollywood sideshow. A guy giving another guy a massage in church.. What the hell? Where's the respect for the sacredness of the "house of God"? In fairness, Jen (pastor's wife) delivered a good message and I'm sure there are good things and people in this church but I fear the slippery slope.. At one point pastors in churches used to say "greet the person next to you", now in this church it's "hug the person near you". Maybe this is not a good idea.. what's next? The only reason this church appeals to young people is that they have gotten so desensitized to the the way church was meant to be.. A Holy Sacred reverent house of God.. Or they have never seen the way it is done right. Now it's about comedy in church mixed in with Jesus talk.. When did churches turn into comedy clubs and entertainment venues? Sad. This church is aptly a former theater.. Yup that's about right, that's what they are.. A theater not a church I hope the leaders of this church take heed to the state of their church.. Boundaries are not so bad.. Allowing everything and anything is not being "cool and hip". You don't live in homes without walls, why don't you have walls in the house of the Lord? read more

This is a special place. The congregation worships just as loud as the worship band. It is lively. As a former worship band member, I can say this was a favorite place to lead worship because it is SO interactive and the presence of God is refreshing and exciting. We moved an hour away so now we only visit once a month. But it is definitely a revival seeking, outreach based, congregation that is really mindful of our affect on culture and how we can operate through the power of God to show love to the world. read more

The leaders of this church don't shy away from difficult topics, but confront them with truth and justice. Whether issues on racial reconciliation, abortion, money, etc., they engage with these issues with wisdom and bible-rooted truth. Worship: This is Los Angeles so I expect most musicians and singers have some degree of skill. The orchestration was BAD! Loud and sounded unorganized. Children running around with parents refusing to manage them added to the chaotic worship. Pastor: His accent was so thick it was impossible to understand him. E58 is a very dependable church. My passion as of late was to find a church that believes in the power of the holy spirit. the gifts of the spirit and a concrete teaching of the word of God. I was floored the first time I attended. There was a shift within me when I stepped in. I can be pretty shy at new things so I didn't speak with anyone but everything captivated me. I don't normally cry during worship. I like singing and worshiping but I have never truly been moved by worship. During the worship I asked the holy spirit to help me worship Jesus since I was feeling shy at the new church I didn't want to sing too loudly or lift my hands. Then all of a sudden the man behind me began speaking in tongues and for some reason the sound of his voice made me start crying and I lifted my hands and started singing loudly. I know when we worship we minister to God but worshiping at E58 is such a blessing for me. After the service they ask for people to make a line if they want prayer and I went ahead and got in line. everyone who is there to pray for you is so loving, kind, understanding, and encouraging. I've only been there two times so this is my fresh perspective on the place, the second time I went there, I had pretty much the same goodness in worship and the word was powerful! after service some of the people invited me and my friends out to eat with them, when we were there, there was this older woman selling candy with her grandson. The women in the group we were eating with felt they had to pray for the woman so with her permission we all surrounded her and began praying for her. She began to cry and we got to minister to her. people began going into their wallets and taking random amounts of money out to give to her and she was richly blessed by the encounter. This is definitely a hipster church. Everyone is very good looking mostly 20s and 30s and they have a focus on justice and the arts. I've been here a few times because my best friend goes here and every time i've come i heard someone different speak and different people play worship as well. They have very talented musicians here. The worship is probably my favorite part. Its a smaller congregation, laid back and causal. They don't have a parking lot so you either have to park on the street or i park in the rite aid plaza just up the street and walk down. They have child care and a small bookstore. There's coffee and snacks afterward too for fellowship and stuff. read more

Came here for about a year until i realized it's totally fake. The worship team music is actually pretty good. Exciting and energizing! Shawn Bolz has a bit where he calls out phone numbers and addresses of people in the crowd and gives them a "prophetic" word. These words are totally generic and can apply to anyone. This impressed everyone including me until i realized he was just reading the phone numbers and addresses off his iPad...and he gets that information when you fill out a little "welcome" card on your first visit. Lying to people and pretending you have "clairvoyant" gifts will NOT create a strong congregation. They mostly use the "New Message" translation which is wrought with inaccuracies and changed meanings, which gets away from the true essence of the Bible! Every now and again they do a service which features healing and claim to heal lots of people. HOWEVER, one of the ministers, Jona Toledo, tore his Achilles' heal and was in a foot brace for months and went to physical therapy. This despite the claims that they can heal "multitudes"! A bit odd. Jen Toledo mostly rambles on about what she thinks are prophetic "dreams" and makes the service run on over 2 1/2 hours. Her big claim to fame is healing a hospital full of people in Africa. Meanwhile, the LA Children's Hospital is still waiting. If you grew up in the Pentecostal/Baptist scene, you might like it or even think it's "fresh" and "new." Otherwise, you're better off hitting the gym Sunday morning. read more
