Tonight I thought I'd hit up the local BBQ here in Midlothian Virginia. Staff is friendly and quick to get you anything you need. Good size menu with several options. I can for the BBQ and ordered a sampler. Sliced Brisket lean with bark and some of their smoked sausage. Comes with Cornbread and 2 sides. I went Standard here coleslaw and potato salad. I'll start with the good, the coleslaw caught me off guard. It looks pretty generic but honestly I think it was the best thing on my plate. Sweet with tiny kick, maybe some horseradish I think. But I ate it all. The potato salad was just too dry. It needs some mayonnaise, mustard, something. The BBQ sauce is tangy and not too bad. I would have liked a couple of options maybe a sweet or spicy one as well. The smoked sausage wasn't too bad, just wish it was served temperature hot. Also it was a bit greasy and with too much charcoal grit, which kind of killed its appeal. Here's where I get disappointed, no burnt ends, apparently they were sold out. The brisket. It was more like a pulled pork than brisket. The request for dry and bark went out the door or they have no idea what I wanted. This was very moist and greasy. Again temperature hot would have helped it tremendously. The meat has no real smoke rings, just the burnt exterior. Overall it's not bad but I just wouldn't consider this place as a true BBQ restaurant by what I was severed. read more

Spouse brought home a brisket burger, green beans, collards, Texas caviar & mac&cheese today. The burger was way overcooked, dry, burnt & hard; the brisket was also dry & bland. Texas caviar was too strong with onions so I didn't even try that (just my preference. Some people like that. GBs were okay. Didn't try Mac as I'm follow a gluten free diet. I was SO looking forward to the collards! Nope. Waaay too salty. Advice: Go for the bbq and see if that's any good but stay away a from everything else. We had brisket, a cheeseburger, collard greens, french fries, coleslaw, and spare ribs. Everything was good except for the spare ribs. It was about 80% fat and about 20% meat on the ribs. other than that, it was a good experience. read more

I am a big supporter of local business but nothing turns me off more than the business not being open when the website and the door say they will be. We drove over to get several bottles of the bbq sauce today. Hours said open at noon. At 1215, we left. Doors still locked but cars in the lot. Lots of other bbq sauces out there to purchase. read more

If I could give this place a zero, I would! It's disgusting! Crap all over the floors, the table was gross, and I had to ask them to wipe it down again, and the food was overpriced and average at best. The waitress gave us a set of plasticware to eat brisket with. When asked for real silverware, she returns 20 minutes later with the silverware in her bare hands. The manager seemed to be ultimately over his head and running around like a chicken with his head cut off. What a complete waste of time and money! read more

Came here and the atmosphere was just really weird.. The interior was really outdated and the walls/seats were dirty. Our waitress was really nice but once we got the food that's where it went downhill. I got some cold ribs and squishy catfish that felt like jello. It was obvious the food wasn't fresh and everything was thrown in a microwave and so we had to leave early. I used to come here as a kid a lot so it's disappointing to see your favorite place turn into the last place you ever want to be at. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover. The decor is definitely outdated. The floor was sticky and there was carpet in the dining hall. These were the only turn offs for me. Service was excellent and the food was great, too. The onion strings were to die for. I had the pub burger, ordered medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. A simple burger that was delicious. If nothing else, come for the amazing service and draft beer! We were treated exceptionally well by Jason! We sat outside on the dog friendly patio where our pup was brought a bowl of water and offered a bone. It was a tiny bit chilly so our server set up the heater and brought it right next to our table. The draft list is awesome! I had an Allagash White which is hard to find and my date had the Citranation (maybe spelled that wrong). Both were delicious and poured perfectly! We found out they also fill kegs and growlers for reasonable prices. I walked through the front to let someone know we were on the patio and have to agree that this place could use a little TLC. Our food was plated well and the portion was HUGE. Thank god we split it. The fries however did come out cold but the mac and cheese was steaming hot so maybe a timing issue in the kitchen. If I could give a 1/2 star I would. We went here last Saturday night, I have driven by it almost everyday for 17 years and finally decided to try it. Well, I wish I didn't. I love, love BBQ and I'm from the heart of the midwest so my expectations are high. But, I thought I'd give it a shot. It was by far the worst BBQ I have ever eaten. The brisket had a slight grey color to it and was cooked way too long or maybe it was just bad beef. Billy, if you're reading this, brisket should not even need a knife to cut, it should be a beautiful brown/pink. The sauce was no better, I was thinking it might spruce it up. It was just yuck, to sweet and vinegary for a BBQ sauce. Now onto the sides. They ran out of cornbread, so couldn't try that. I did get a roll that was stale along with what appeared to be cole slaw but did not taste good at all. Oh and there was possibly maybe 5 other groups in there (should of been a tipoff) and the waiter was running all over the place, left the table once because my kid didn't order their drink quick enough for him. We ordered an appetizer (saugages...just ok) and 3 secs later wanted to know what our dinner was. He was a little rude and acted like we came in 5 mins to close. Lastly, the place looked like it needed a good scrubbing. The table had been wiped down, but I think there were decades of grease left, the paper menus were almost sticking to it. So we had not been to Extra Billy's in Midlothian for probably 10 to 12 years. We ordered a starter which was the barbecue nachos and they were extremely greasy (only ate a few of them) and the nachos chips were a little over cooked (slightly brown), We waited for for 50 minutes before we got our food. We think the waitress forgot to enter our order until later. She may have been a closet or bathroom text-er because we didn't see her that much. She would disappear for 20 minutes at a time. Order was not 100% correct (corn bread instead of rolls) and the food was just a 5 out of 10 (lack of flavor). Won't come back for another 10 - 12 years. Maybe they'll improve by then if they're still in business. Don't mean to imply that the food is the worst in the world, it's just the worst I've had in a long, long time. read more

We visited Extra Billy in Midlothian before going to see a movie at Carmike. Its great how close the Theatre and Extra Billys is. We had about 30 mins to grab some appetizers and a drink at the bar. I ordered hush puppies, fried pickles, fried mushrooms, and onion straws. Jesse has a triple overtime "beer" and I had a taste, it was good! The hush puppies and onion straws were excellent. Yummy fried goodness. The fried pickles did not have enough batter on them but still had a good pickled flavor. The server miss heard me and brought a shrimp boat instead of mushrooms. They were ok. I would have like to try the mushrooms but we were out of time since we had a movie to go to. The server Amanda was very helpful and friendly. We had an enjoyable experience and will go back. Based on other reviews, I cant say I'm surprised at my disappointment. The only reason I even tried this place was because of friends of mine who raved about it. So I thought maybe Yelp lacked reviews from those who enjoyed this place?? Wrong. First impression, the floor was so sticky. There is dingy old carpet in the dining area and you can literally feel all the crap that's spilled on it along the years. I was so turned off. We started with bbq nachos as an app. It was okay. Nothing was necessarily bad about it but I definitely wouldnt continue wasting calories on it. For my entree I ordered the pulled pork plate with a side of mac and cheese and green beans. As far as the meat goes, it was so fatty and flavorless. There is no possible way I could eat that meat without drenching it in sauce. I took a couple bites and that was all I could bring myself to eat. The green beans were straight from a can with nothing added. They werent simmered with onions or bacon. Just a can of beans. The mac and cheese was probably the only thing worth eating. It wasnt the most amazing thing but compared to everything else it seemed like a 5 star meal. We ended the dinner with peanut butter pie for dessert and that was quite delicious! It was creamy, rich and the perfect amount of sweetness. Some whipped cream would have definitely topped it off. I really liked our server. He was so nice and attentive. I feel terrible leaving this review but I hope this place learns from Yelp. My friends used to come here all the time years ago and said how amazing it is but the whole time at dinner they kept saying it went down hill. read more

We took some family members out for dinner. We felt comfortable with their COVID protocols and the staff was great! The food was amazing! The chicken was falling off the bone and had fantastic flavor!! The Mac N Cheese was the best I've ever had. The portions were big, everyone (including my 13 year old son) had leftovers. i told waitress 2 times i wanted unsweetened tea. She still brought me sweet tea. And when she came for refills I asked for unsweetened and again got sweetened tea. The onion straws were fried beyond having any taste. Not burnt yet all the flavor was cooked out of the onions, so it was just dry tasteless old grease crunchy bite. I got the 3 meat platter. The 3 ribs were good but not much meat there to eat. The pulled pork was horrible. The meat was so dry. My group sometimes cooked 50 pork butts and the meat coming off them is juicy. I have cooked pork butt slowly in the oven and had them come out moist. But this meat was soo dry. No amount of vinegar BBQ sauce brought it to eatable. My dogs enjoyed it when I came home. Now if we need to describe dryness, well the brisket was dryer than my lawn this summer. My dogs enjoyed this too. They have no taste. I decided to try the apple cobbler. I got a small crock with a few apples in it. Maybe half of an apple. But they put a thick crust on top of it and baked it in an over. My crust....guess what....was cooked so dark, hard and dry. I would call it burnt. And to find so little apple under it was horrible waste. I ditched the burnt crust and just ate the few pieces of apple. I use to eat here often. The burgers and onion straws were great. But there is not much good i can say about the food or the service that night. Ohhhhhh when the waitress brought my apple cobbler she was also carrying two slices of cake with a plastic spoon on each. When she gave me my cobbler (with a plastic spoon) she dropped a plastic spoon off one of the cake plates. I caught it in my lap and handed it back to her. I thought she would throw it away but she just put the spoon that had been in my lap and handled by me back on one of the cake plates and served it. Went here a while back and forgot to post the review, Took my family along with my mother-n-law for a ride and stumbled upon a classic car show, while looking at the cars someone pressured us to eat something. After a couple of refusals my mother -n-law caved in and we settled in for BBQ. BBQ was dry, no flavor and the restaurant seemed very unkept. Service was slow even though there were very few people seated. We were ask if everything was ok and when we mentioned to dry meat I was told " yea, it comes out that way sometimes, y'all have a good night" so I am taking there advice and having a good night somewhere else next time. We were here 2 years ago from out of town and I wasn't the biggest fan so I was surprised when my husband wanted to go back there on this visit. He and I both got the burnt ends with 2 sides. I had the baked beans and mac and cheese while he had the potato salad and baked beans. He wanted the smoked chicken but they were out at 6pm. His burnt ends were primarily fat but the waiter did make it right and brought him out some that were better quality. There really wasn't anything that we had that I thought was very good. Food: Pulled BBQ was very dry Pork ribs were again dry and not even warm Burnt Ends were great! French fries were well seasoned and tasted great but were cold. We went this week, and had the rib special 5 meaty ribs to a plate, too much food for me so my hubby had extra. I had the slaw - meh a little watery and no tang - and the fries - good. Hubby had the mac and cheese - also good. Service was fast and friendly, atmosphere was comfortable, beer was good but we are more into the Q than the beer. The BBQ sauce is good, a little tangy and a little sweet. If you like it hotter be sure to ask for the hot BBQ sauce, they have it but don't keep it on the table, my hubby ALWAYS asks for it. I'd love to give you a review of the food here. It reviewed well and it smelled good. 6pm on a Friday night sounds like a pretty busy time, so I expected to have to wait for a table. What I didn't expect was to stand at an empty host station for the better part of ten minutes to have three different people say "I'll be with you in a minute" and otherwise be ignored. I finally decided to just leave and go somewhere that I could at least be acknowledged when I got there. When a paying customer drives to your restaurant with the express intention of giving you money to eat your food, the absolute bare minimum of service that's expected is to be seated. I'm in Virginia for business. I feel bad for the server because she was great however the food was dry. they tried to make it right which I appreciate by bringing out more food. But I ended up taking it back to my hotel and throwing it away. The restaurant itself could use a major cleaning. I got the biggest platter they had and the only thing that was good was the ribs. I enjoyed the coleslaw and coleslaw better than I did anything else. I believe they have potential to be a great barbecue place but I am spoiled from Texas barbecue as well. read more

The food was hot fast and delicious. I got the 2 meat bbq plate. The sausage was delicious as I remember from years ago when I would eat there. The brisket on the other hand I've had better and it's sad, cause I've had better at extra Billy's. The brisket fell apart dry and I had to swim it in sauce to eat it. It tasted like it was pot roast sitting in a big crock pot in the back. I'll be back if I'm on the south side but I'll probably never order the brisket again. At one time I would have given Extra Billy's a 4 star review, but the past few times I've been I came away a little disappointed. This past time not so much for the food but the service and more specifically the time it took for them to take my payment at the end of the meal (15 minutes!). The waitress was very personable and friendly up until that point, but her tip went from 25% to 15% due to her failure at the end of the meal to provide good service. As for the food the BBQ pulled pork potato skins were outstanding and huge! Baked beans were solid. My wife said her pulled chicken sandwich was a little dry but the mac & cheese and homemade apple sauce were good as always. We both agreed the hushpuppies, which are usually outstanding, were a little off and more dense than usual. Great VA BBQ red sauce as always. read more

It smelled funny in there, there isn't proper ventilation in this joint, my husband and I left smelling like a dirty grease rag. The food isn't bad, not great, they upcharge for any small little extras, that are a given at most places... after 2 refills of soda - you get charged for another soda... All in all, it's a meh kind of eatery with freezer burned food in a worn out establishment. There really isn't any wonder to why they likely aren't getting a ton of new business. I usually get the pulled chicken sandwich or the catfish with steak fries and applesauce. The applesauce is which has nice chunks of apple in it. My husband gets the chopped pork. He reports the corn bread is more cake-like. There are two sauce options, one a more vinegar-based North Carolina style; both are good. There is a good beer selection as well. All of the food and sides we have had is great. I prefer the chicken here because it is not too smoky. read more
