I've been with them for about 3 years. The current staff is very nice and are working hard to keep a good face and keep customers satisfied. The previous manager, was very mean and rude... I did have a unit break-in last year... I just had a another unannounced rent increase but called and they lowered my rate. Recently they shortened the hours for accessing your units to align with office hours, basically closing 3 hours earlier at 7pm, no longer 10pm! This def hurts! They say it cause they don't want people on the premises much longer after the staff leaves which is at 6pm. Sounds like I shouldn't be here anymore, But I continue to be here because it's close and convenient and the current staff is very nice If they extend the unit access hours I'll be much happier!!! read more

I received good service by all the folks I met in the Cedar Street location. Also, my 5x5 unit was fine and just as described. The building had an elevator and a cart, which was very helpful for moving my boxes to my unit. I'm giving a 2 star due to what I consider to be a deceptive billing practice. After 4 months the cost of my unit doubled. When the autopay hit my account I called the company because I actually though it was an error. Perhaps an odd billing cycle or something since it was exactly double. I was told it was not a mistake and that I was given the "internet rate" (even though I signed up in-person at the physical location) which typically expired "after a few months." Nobody told me at the time of sign up that the price I was quoted was temporary or an introductory rate. I feel like I as deceived about the true cost of the unit. read more

I absolutely would not recommend Extra Space Storage, mainly because of their "policy" of "reviewing and adjusting rates based on market conditions," which seems opportunistic at best, and frankly, bogus to me. Here is my experience: I secured a unit in February 2025. My online rate was $96.60. I recently received a notice that effective 12/03/2025, my rate will be 263.60 (rental and insurance). This represents a 174% increase from Feb 2025 to Dec 2025. That's right: one hundred seventy four percent increase in 10 months. Does that seem right to you?? I rented a second, smaller storage unit in April 2025. The rate for the unit and insurance was $56.20. As of October 2025, 6 months later, my rate is $104.20. This represents an 80% increase in 6 months. If I keep the unit, in another six months I anticipate another 80% increase, which is just flat unacceptable. Therefore, I am currently exploring other options. However, when I went to review my "contract," I got a message saying the the URL had expired. I tried calling Extra Space, but it was after 530pm, so no one picked up. I went online, but struck out there as well. So one lesson learned: download the contract as soon as they send it to you. A better lesson would be to question any storage facility about how often rate changes are anticipated. If they tell you they evaluate "market trends" monthly, I would thank them and move to the next facility. read more

NEVER go here. TERRIBLE experience. They doubled the price without much notice, then they were very combative about it. I cancelled, wanted to make sure that I'd get pro rated / refunded. They were EXTREMELY rude and combative the whole time. They ended up charging me $20 extra at the time, saying I'd be refunded. They rushed me out the door, didn't mention anything, then the next day I was billed $94 AGAIN only one week after my previous $94 payment & the $20 I paid to prorate. I called about this unexpected charge, they were again EXTREMELY RUDE and combative. They forgot to tell me that I'd be charged again due to some mistake they made. They were not apologetic AT ALL. So I've paid $210 in the last 8 days just trying to cancel, my typical monthly rate was like $52. She was actually SUPER ANNOYED that I called to ask about the extra charge - rediculous. I'm assuming I will eventually get a refund but I have no receipt/email confirming it, only the emails with the extra payment confirmations. This place is the worst place I have ever seen or tried for storage. I paid for a month and have a credit with them (because they don't do ethical business) but I got all of my stored items out of that filthy place within a few weeks and moved it to a much much better storage facility. No one from the company has contacted me despite me giving very clear poor feedback to them about how lousy my experience with this company was. Save yourself $$$ in the long run and STAY AWAY! Almost have to believe it was an inside job since I was never notified the first time my unit was broken into. I later went inside and meet Vianney and she helped me out, we toured the unit, and I left with a lock and key on my hand, paperwork done and super happy in less than 1-hour!! This is a dream team! Unless you're okay with stolen items, avoid this place at all costs! Our storage unit was broken into, the thin metal strip that keeps the door closed was cut. The company does not have cameras, so they couldn't provide any video footage. On top of this, the employee and manager were unbelievably rude when we asked for this month to be refunded. We didn't get any apology, just "because we didn't purchase insurance" they will not reimburse us for stolen items or provide any compensation. The reaction was incredible. Even a simple "I'm so sorry about this," was would have at least been a human reaction. If you care whether your stored items are stolen, and if you care about being treated like a human rather than being belittled for not purchasing insurance, then please avoid this place at all costs. This place was a dream with Vianney as the manager. Since she has been on leave, the experience took a nosedive with the new interim manager. THey are like night and day. Vianney was always pleasant and super helpful and patient, the new manager is rude, impatient, and couldn't care less. I'm really sorry this is happening because I literally stayed on even though they raised my rent. I would have switched to another place if it had not been for Vianney. To top it all off, the new interim manager said they sent us a mail that they were going to switch all locks in March but I did not receive anything. Therefore when I went to my storage in June on a Sunday, I had a heart attack because my lock was no longer there and I thought my locker was broken into. Then I realized that all locks are now different so I thought maybe they changed the locks. Either way I wasted 3 hours round trip, gas, toll, and headache because I could not get into my storage. I wanted to drop off something I could not bring on the plane so since I couldn't get to my storage which is against my contract since I should be able to access it during the times the facility is open, I had to pay $40 to check a bag. I rarely go to my storage and need to be able to access it. They could have done a better job notifying me. They send me a text and voicemail EVERY MONTH thanking me for my payment, I think they could have also let me know about the locks. The interim manager showed no sympathy with the situation and said my $50 lock was stored inside the storage but that remains to be seen since I could not get in on that Sunday so have no idea what happened to my stuff. Also there is a new gate procedure. Before, we had to stop way before the gate and press a button to exit but now we have to drive to the gate and since I did not know, the gate ended up banging into my rental car. Basically, they owe me money because of not being able to access my storage (the time and gas and toll wasted that day + my need to check in the bag because I could not leave something in my storage + the failure to notify me + and potentially my lock if it's not there UNDAMAGED.) I wish Vianney was there because she always was professional and polite and always tried her very best to help. The interim manager showed now empathy and could not wait to get me off the phone. ANd yes, they do up the rates after 3-4 months so be prepared to leave or switch to a smaller unit. I'm ready to look for a new place unless Vianney comes back soon. I now have to follow up with this new lock situation and failure to live up to their side of the contract, particularly since I've been on autopay for a while now and have been a good customer. They are just money hungry as a company and don't respect the investment we make with them and the choice to be with that company. It's sad really. read more

UPDATE: I moved out on 7/29/21 exactly 2 months after I signed my contract. I was there ONE day past my billing date & this location is NOT going to refund me my money. I paid $244.20 for ONE DAY! They rented my space to someone else AND they are keeping my money for all AUGUST. So they're getting 2 months rent for one storage unit. Pretty SLEAZY TRICK Extra Space Storage in Berkeley! Reading other Yelp reviews, they also will JACK UP the rent soon after you move in. The manager at the Berkeley location is the WORST MANAGER I have ever come across! She will berate you and blame you for whatever goes wrong! She wrote in the report that SHE MOVED MY STUFF OUT of my space (see pic attached), I didn't have anything to move out!!! I used google reviews instead of Yelp and should have checked here. I store stuff before moving and had to find a place fast. It works, my stuff was fine but here is what you need to know: 1.) Prices in are insane- seriously, if you have more time, you'll find nice units fore less. 2.) People live in here. I was unpacking and a woman was living next door, getting ready leaving for the day. Random people will follow you in the gate when you enter your code. I tried to alert staff but no one was working each time I was there. 3.) Some have nice doors/lock and don't appear too open at the top. My unit however, was built with a flimsy door and could have been easily broken into with a crowbar. Luckily, I didn't need it for long. 4.) CANCEL BEFORE YOUR BILLING DATE and get confirmation of you move-out/cancellation (see below). No Pro-rating. 5.) Hound them for your emailed cancellation/move-out RECEIPT CONFIRMATION which is NOT the same as email confirmation of your notice to move out. I found that out the hard way when they kept charging me and then initially refused to refund the money because I didn't receive a call back to confirm that my unit was empty. (Even after I confirmed with staff on the phone and the app that I was out.) Someone has to walk over and confirm it and evidently, do more paperwork and if that does not happen, you aren't officially out. 6.) Good things: no apparent mice or rats seen and it's cold in the hallways so didn't feel the need to get a special unit to protect pictures, etc. Also, conveniently off the freeway. read more

The problem came that a few months after contracting their services while I was in another state unable to move my belongings they suddenly changed the price of the rental by increasing it 45%!!!! This place is problematic for many reasons. The first one is that there's no rent control on storage and they jack up the rent about every 4 to 6 months. It doesn't matter if you're a long term customer, they are greedy and keep jacking it up. It's a horrible experience to drive into this place, which is no-man's land (no-woman's land, no-one's-land). It's desolate and creepy. You have to enter your secret code # in the key pad, then this cranky gate slowly and creepily opens. You drive through, and there you are, in no man's-land, full of storage units with no one else around in sight. It's possible most storage places are like this. But this one is out on the edge, not downtown in a trafficked area, and so you're alone there. The light only goes on as you walk down the aisle, and at night it's way too dark to see. Once i couldn't get the light to go on at all so was in the dark with just some daylight coming in. THe big deal breaker here is this: MICE. I'm going to try to see how to upload the picture. They won't keep the doors closed, which would probably keep the mice out. They could be getting in holes in the wall somewhere, and climbing up tubing or electrical wires in the wall. But there they are, and yes, there are droppings in my unit. YUCK. If you have blankets, clothes, etc. watch out. Mice will chew them to pieces. They will chew up your books to shreds. This company is liable for any mouse damage, and they will lose in small claims court, BUT you will have lost your precious belongings, which may not be replaceable by a sum of money. Management i hope you're reading! You need to solve this problems. The traps aren't doing it. read more

I rented here because I needed it last minute. Sounds like most of us rented here for that reason. It's WAY OVER PRICED to begin with.... Moved in anyway... Needed it and it was in the middle of rioting and a pandemic. The door has never closed all of the way and debris and dirt... rocks and more have come in and constantly covered my items with dirt. I have placed plastic over my items to keep the massive amount of dust off of my stuff. Now after just a couple months they are raising my already high rent. I can afford it. That's not the point. The point is that we have one of the highest unemployment rates, there is a pandemic, this space is surrounded by homeless and they are raising everyone's rent: like clockwork. It's unethical and a bad business practice. I contacted them and they do not care. They don't care if I leave a review. They don't care how we feel about how wrong this is... All they care about is making money. I'm all for making money... I am a business owner. I am not about making this as hard on everyone around you when you have the power to give people a little space. greatly disappointed. Extremely dissatisfied: Their Berkeley unit foreclosed on our household possessions during the recent holidays, during which time we were first dealing with the critical illness, and then mourning the death of a very close family member. We never received any timely, mailed notice advising us of outstanding late charges, fees, etc; this may be actionable. And the fun part is that we had the funds available, just too distracted to focus on this. Clearly, we bear full responsibility for this oversight on our part, under what were exceptional circumstances. However, a little grace and redundancy in communication, a simple email sent- e.g. one received today that asked for my participation in their survey as an "exiting customer"- would have been both courteous and prompted immediate payment to avoid this unfortunate outcome. I wish them best with improving: 1. Their business model embedded with bait (upfront low rates) and the switch (raise later). We have another storage unit in Alameda that is twice the space, but at a lesser price. Extra Storage started much lower, but then increased over 6-8 months to exceed the other unit's monthly rate, which has remained unchanged. 2. Lack of redundant communications (1 or 2), e.g. email, call/text vs. non-certified mailed notices that that may not be received timely or at all. They lost both a customer and the value of our full cash payment that would have exceeded the return received at the sale of our old stuff. But maybe... rolling the dice to potentially profit from late/delayed payments is also part of their business model.
