Recently my fiance and I had the misfortune of losing our home. In our devastation we rented the first storage unit we could find, closest to the house we were losing. Unfortunately, this was a disaster. The woman running the San Pablo Dam Road Extra Space storage facility was a continuous nightmare from day one. The only way I can explain her constant presence and intrusion in our access to our unit was that she must watch the security camera every minute of the day sure that somebody is going to come on site and commit some offense that she can then go yell at them for. Without exception, every time we went through the gate there was an issue: somebody dropped a cigarette butt, somebody poured out a coffee, I had to walk my dog during a very hot day after he'd been in the car for 3 hours, this was a problem, and not because I didn't pick up after him, I absolutely did and she said nothing of the kind oh, it was just a problem. On a colder day pulling the door down a quarter of the way to block the blustering wind was also a problem, spending more than 3 hours in my unit trying to find anything or make sense of the chaos that had once been a three-bedroom home now occupying a 12 by 20 foot space, also a problem. Oh and by the way, coming back later that evening after my 3 hours in the afternoon, she made sure to inform me that I had already used up my entire three-hour quota for the day ( as my boyfriend had rented the unit I was unaware of this policy and this was my first time in violation of it). Therefore, she had no intention of allowing me to be there more than 15 minutes and she stood outside the unit looking at her watch while I went in and grabbed a bottle of wine and then left again. In short every time we went on site it was a constant problem and nuisance. If we were there more than 30 minutes we would see her more than once for sure. Make no mistake, these were unpleasant exchanges. She nearly always came bitching and chastising. Needless to say, I responded in kind and eventually did get banned from the facility. I know I am no angel, but I do expect to be treated courteously and professionally and respectfully when transacting in such a manner. Furthermore, I take zero issue with getting banned from the facility, because I did respond as I was treated, abhorrently. I get that. That's her prerogative. But it was a completely unprofessional way for her to treat her clients that I was responding to, and am still offended by. In short, our treatment at this facility was absolute harassment. Because she refused to stop pointing her finger while she was yelling at me, the last time I saw the site manager she actually hit my car window next to my face! I would not rent, or advise anyone else to rent, a unit from this site under any circumstances, ever. As soon as we could, we removed our items from storage at that site and found a unit $100 cheaper and twice the size within a 5 minute drive from there. It's completely secure and I've never seen the owner or manager. My take away: no matter how bad things get, just remember they can always get worse! Choose wisely, not desperately! read more

This place was clean, no critters on 6 legs or 4 legs which is a BIG plus. The on-site mgr. gives clear instructions and she definitely will greet you. She made it real easy for me when I was vacating my unit after being a tenant there for 3 yrs. I haven't used her name because I hate mis-spelling a name but it is pronounced Lisa (although not spelled that way). Sorry manager, blame my mind and not my intentions. All the supplies you need are in the office and hands down kudos for her pointing out the big locks with the combination and not the key. Life Saver!! Late in the afternoon on Saturday I rented an 8'x9' unit. The buildings are older and musty but that was okay. I was extremely tired and the office manager had an appointment so I tried to hurry on her behalf. She was nice and professional. Sunday I returned with my moving truck to move my things in. when I went up to the unit again, I noticed 2 things. One, the unit seemed a bit narrow for 8'. So, I decided to measure the unit. I did and found out it was 5 feet wide! I called the 800 number, and they said they could do nothing for me until tomorrow. I tried to get my sofa in there and couldn't no matter what way I tried. It wasn't wide enough. I explained I had rented a 72sq foot unit and they gave me a 45sq foot unit. They apologized and said they still couldn't help me until tomorrow. I didn't want to bother the manager on her day off, but I had no other choice. I knocked on her door and her reply to my situation was "I showed you the unit first" and also "I am not here today, you will have to come back tomorrow if you want to rent a different unit." I told her can you just open a 10x10 unit for me & we can do paperwork tomorrow, she said "No." read more

I have rented a storage space from two separate Extra Space facilities. The location in El Sobrante, I rented for only one month. I noticed that when I went to move out of the storage many boxes had been opened. The tape was removed and the edge of some boxes were broken open. I rented in Vallejo after that, and my unit was burglarized and many items were stolen. The manager said that the thieves came in after closing and used an instrument to pry open the security gates. I am starting to wonder about these people because I rented a second space and upon my return to the unit I noticed the same issue with my boxes. The tape was pulled back or the box edges had been disturbed. I believe the perpetrators are getting a peek of what's inside to see if it's worth stealing. The insurance group that is tied into the storage facility is unprofessional and hard to reach. I made several calls and left several messages before anyone got back to me. Finally, they took the report over the phone, emailed the paper work to me. I sent it back in December (my storage was broken into in November), it is now March and still have not received an insurance payment for my loss. I left several messages in February and finally, I received a voice message saying that my papers were received and that they were being investigated and that I would hear back from them by the end of the week. That was in February.???? Additionally, a family member rented a space there and due to a special, 50 dollars off for referring a friend. I received the discount of 50 dollars off my storage unit rent. The following month, my storage rent was raised to 12 dollars more per month. I spoke to the manager about the increase in rent and she replied that the rents can go up at any time. Yeah right, some discount. I wonder if this is some new thing, where the people that work for the facility set this crap up. It just doesn't make sense that out of all the storage units a random thief would hit my storage specifically. Things that make you go hmmm... read more

I would perhaps consider 2 stars because the girl that rented me the unit was very nice and helpful. However, she failed to fully explain this lock situation that goes on with this company which is wierd and as it turns out caused a big blowup with my relationship with ESS. When you rent the unit there is only one lock that you must purchase from ESS. It is some sort of a round cylinder lock .Anyway, there is nothing else you could use it for so when I vacated my unit after only needing it for a couple of months, I got my things out and left this lock assuming they had some master key to open the lock. Even though the unit was empty, I thought it appropriate to lock it back up. I mean there was nothing that I could do with the lock , why should I take it???? Well, that being said, I received a phone call the other day from ESS to inform me that my rent was 2 weeks past due. I told him that I had vacated the unit 4 days before my rent was even due and that I had written them an email stating the fact that I had left. Then he asked me " well how are we suppose to know this with your lock still on the unit?" I told him you're suppose to read your emails. Everything else there is done on line. And I said the office was closed, what was i suppose to do with that stupid lock . Anyway, the bottom line is that he was in fact calling to tell me I owed money for the 2 weeks that he thought it was past due. And I just said F**k you! The unit was left neat and cleaned and locked (like I assumed it was suppose to be and notice was given and still I get a call saying I owe them money. I HATE that kind of crap. And it will probably go against my credit for an"unpaid debt" as hard as it is to keep your credit rating good. So ESS , unless you change these kinds of flaws in the way you handle situations like this, I think you basically suck. read more

Rented a unit today. I had spoken to Brandon earlier in the week. Very nice man. Went in today and met with Lisa. She showed me a few units and we picked the appropriate one for my needs. Lisa is not only efficient but a kick to talk to. The unit was clean, actually the entire complex was clean. Nice big elevator with complimentary carts to haul your stuff. I was going to write a really long and detailed review about why no one should rent from them, but I will put it simply: there was a break-in to my unit and two others on 1/2/11 and I had several irreplaceable valuables stolen. I found out later that Extra Space DOES NOT lock their warehouses at night, thus giving would-be thieves a perfect opportunity to hop the fence and walk right in. STUPID! The locking mechanism on their inside unit doors is very easy to break, as I was able to see on mine and the two other units hit. STAY FAR AWAY! read more
